I'm so happy someone is talking about this game! Very underrated game and I hope it gets more recognition! Even though it's still in development there is basically a complete game to play through.
This game seems cool. Also thankyou Splatty for listening to your viewers and studying the games beforehand! I never said anything but I've noticed you make the change in response to feedback and that's always great to see.
Wouldn't it be more accurate to class these more like board games than card games? Board games often have cards to facilitate game mechanics but, to me, a card game is doesn't have tiles or tokens to move around.
This still relies on cards as the only way to perform your actions. Its not just same added on bonus. Just because it decides to add a hex board into the mix doesnt mean its not a card game. In fact I would say this is an improved card game because it takes into consideration spacing and location and has a story.
@Nícolas Mallmann That's an irrelevant distinction though, as most board games use plenty of cards for everything too. I'd say anything that has a map of sorts for movement (and actual characters to move around) is probably more so a board game than a card game. It doesn't have to be a 'level map' or 'world map', it can be a purely tactical map too. And in fact, Trials of Fire does have a world map aside from the tactical hex board levels you move through. Anything that has nothing more but a 'hand of cards' is probably 'just' a card game (think Hearthstone, Magic the Gathering, etc.). Something like Hand of Fate wouldn't be a 'card game' in my book at all, but rather a boardgame too. Honestly, I think the OP has a point. Trials of Fire is a boardgame. It has tactical RPG elements, deckbuilder mechanics and roguelike mechanics. It's like a slick combination of Slay the Spire and Thea: the Awakening. Also keep in mind how certain labels make little to no sense to describe a game's actual genre, like for example 'deckbuilder'. Pretty much all the deckbuilder games still have a random draw of cards, not unlike more common boardgames. And not every deckbuilder will be an RPG of sorts, which is a genre more associated with tabletop games anyway.
I kinda like the mechanics in this. The free spells being a thing you can use or throw out for mana to maybe effectively make mana 1 things 'free' is a neat little dynamic.
i had an Extended Stasis deck in the mid 90's i invested so much money and energy into, left it on the table to heat up a hot pocket at the massive gaming center here. Returned, and it was yoinked. Feels bad man, I know.
nice find! the devs seem to have done a great job translating card-based skills into diegetic entities - in other words very chunky hits and colorful VFX
Looks good. Really like the mixture of grid based combat and open world travel. Card burning element is something I haven't seen in a game before. I like it.

Lane based attack is really hard to make a card game when it's like. "But we flavored the units as cards!" Cool flavor but you can flavor them as dices or little figures that sit in a box that you pick up and put on the field. In fact that would be really cool. Yet it doesn't really make it a card game because you can replace the cards with anything.
Am I the only one that noticed the similarities between Fallout 1’s and this games’ beginning? Water stone - Water chip Dying village - Dying vault *??*
You have to be slightly tipsy, tired, and have one eye closed to see Shandalar in this... That comparison alone diminished my enjoyment of this game but if I forget about that heretical suggestion it looked like a cool little game. Man I miss Shandalar. If they released an updated version of that game I'd be on that with a quickness.
Nah dude, you're not splitting hairs. Card game is overused trope right now, just because it's popular (it is? I don't know actually I feel there are designer fads that rule a lot of the game design atm). In fact, you can transform many entinties into 'cards' - it's just a matter of a form of presentation. Nowdays it makes me skeptical If I hear something is a 'card game' - because it means one of 2 things - designers just wanted to make something that's popular, or tought card game is an original idea. Saying all that, I LOVED Shandalar. That's why I'm here, with a spark of hope brightening my old, hollow heart.
Right there with you on the cards being stolen. I didn't have any Moxes but did have a couple copies of Lich, Juzam Djinn, and a bunch of others. I wasn't playing at the time it happened but sad regardless.

What? How is this like Shandalar? Has anyone who said that even played Shandalar? This is just a Slay the Spire clone with some RPG elements! Compared with Shandalar, in this game you don't collect cards (you level up and get them); you don't fight enemies who use collectible cards; you don't build different decks with different cards instead you have characters with class specific cards. There are no towns or cities where you can buy cards and equipment like in Shandalar as well. All locations are just random encounters or events, like in most Slay the Spire clones. Not to be a duck, but you DO build a deck in this game and you DO gain equipment that changes your decks. Also, there are various classes that each have a unique deck to start off with. Collectable? No. Adaptive? Yes.
