2004 EB 5.4L 2WD. Was driving and suddenly the truck began to stutter and putt putt. researched and was very afraid it was gonna be a bad plug. Bought a OBDII scanner and that code eventually lead me to this video. I found that there was a break in the larger of the two hoses in this video. Replaced it and now the truck is running great. Mileage is back to normal also. This is the second time I have found a broken hose guys. Always check your hoses first. Many thanks to the poster.

Bought my sensor from auto zone. check engine light went out for a little while, then came back on. Same code. Went to ford and bought the oem part, not much more expensive. Light went out and has ran for years. The egr valve and hoses all looked good and clean at the time as well. Cheap part. Go with the oem when getting this sensor.

The downstream hose is connected to the DPFE sensor. There will be two hoses that go into the two small connections to the EGR Tube. You will want to buy these hoses from the dealership due to the fact that they are reinforced and will not collapse as with any other rubber hose. Measure these hoses, but they will sell them by the foot at the dealership. They are 2 different sizes. Replace both at this time. They tend to break around the sensor and allow too much air in cusing your error code

The 2 hoses connect to the DPFE sensor and the 2 "limbs that come off the EGR Tube. If the rubber hoses are not connected to the DPFE sensor that would be a problem throwing the code.

You should smell the coolant if you have a leak. Also the coolant should leave a small puddle trail from the leak. Water will evaporate, so if you are not using the correct mixture of coolant, it may just not leave any residue. You should check near the thermostat, the lower part of the housing should sit above a small trough that may collect some of the coolant. You may just have a bad thermostat which will cause it too overheat, thus burning off the coolant.

Had this issue also, what i found was the hoses hooked up to the DPFE were in the wrong positions. I changed around so far so good.

My Story......Have a Eddie Bauer 2004 Expedition got the dreaded P0401 changed the DPFE Sensor, EGR Valve and cleaned throttle body without removing it with throttle cleaner. Code went away but came back a couple days later. Decided to check the EGR Solenoid with multimeter before diving in to remove throttle from engine for deep clean. Solenoid read good so decided to start taking things apart...AN THERE IT WAS not the two hooded green hose with one going to the EGR valve but the other one had that crappy spongy rubber like material Ford used as an elbow to connect the hose from the EGR solenoid had fallen apart an had holes in it....Problem solved FYI people don't waste time like me check all hoses in the EMS system not just the unit throwing a code.

he air intake manifold must be taken off completely. There are 2 small ports that will be clogged with carbon buildup. Anytime your car runs to lean, or too rich carbon buildup is a byproduct. It is going to either clog the ports, valves. When a hole is present in the EGR hose, the intake valve is the first to clog and the most time consuming to clean. Just use a small wire bristle brush will clean this out with a good cleaner. Spray alone will not work on this.

  • @FordEnthusiasts
    @FordEnthusiasts  12 років тому +2

It may be the air vacuum. It will sit back behind the manifold....in the video it has a green line that comes out of it...try here first.

.just curious. I work on my wife's 1999 4.6 liter model..It has an intermittent subtle loss of power.
We took to an auto part store called and it has a P401 code..
DPFE code. I've never cleaned the manifold but we've had the car for about 10 years. I would imagine that there is some carbon build up at the very least. I used to take the Idle air control out and clean it..I think I finally replaced it I'm was a electronic tech for about 20 or so years. TVs VCRs .. Garage door openers, Sat.Systems. I've seen a lot of things replaced and often it was a transistor or IC. It goes grain to just throw money ( Scarce commodity,) at something. My problem is intermitent, carbon might due that. I think I'll look into cleaning that.

May I ask what was the size of the inner diameter of the egr hose? I got wrong one today ...the inner diam was 4mm too small.

I have a 2001 Ford Expedition and I just did a tuneup and now the check engine light is on. As I was driving it felt smooth until 20 minutes into driving and now it's stalling as I'm driving.

Hello. I have a 2004 Ford expedition 5.4L V8. My truck is burning excessive fuel. I have changed my fuel filter & EGR unit. But I am still going through fuel super quick.

please tell me what that green vacuum hose that is connected to the egr valve is called because mine snaps off and i need to replace it but i cant find it anywhere because i dont know what it is called

  • @FordEnthusiasts

What engine codes are you receiving?
It sounds like the intake manifold may be clogged......If you are running rich or lean, carbon is a byproduct that will clog the two small holes in the air intake manifold. This will need to be cleaned, but I would also check the vacuum gauge pump as it would be prone to fail.

Q: What part of that tube do you blow out.. or how do you get to it?... Do yo blow it out from on end or are you removing it completely?

    2004 ford expedition 5.4 l Triton V8
Replaced TPS, MAS, Crank post sensor, air filter, fuel filter, throttle body gasket, PCV valve and I still getting a too lean code. It idles fine when cold but idles rough when car warms up. It acts like it wants to die bit runs fine driving. Any help please it has 140,000 miles on it. Also replaced plugs and coils.

On my 03 navigator it turned out to be the air hose it will keep coming off when driving so I replace the air hose and problem fix. The air hose expanded with the time and became to large for it to hold on to the lines but the new ones had a strong fit so no more sliding off.

Could this happen to a v10 excursion? I have had intermiten no start/minimal to no crank and I kept thinking it's the fuel pump. It typically hapens after I've driven for a while and if I let it cool down, it may or may not start back up. No codes made it very difficult to pinpoint the problem...When I looked up on the OBD, it has a p04..code stored. Nothing specific, just P04...

I have a 2003 Ford Windstar SE and the codes that were on the diagnostic machine that was listed on it were P0171 and P0174 Bank 1 and Bank 2 were listed. Can you recommend where to get the sensors and what kind and how many? Amazon has some universal types, but can you help me choose the best ones at the lowest price? Thank you.

Where exactly was the air intake manifold clogged and what was it clogged with? I have the same code, P4001, I've changed the same part you have, and while I haven't done it yet, about every 30,000 I'll disconnect the air intake and spray down the throttle body flap with carb cleaner because there is carbon and dirt buildup on that flap....

Carbon is a byproduct, it will become hard and build up on the manifold. Think of it like plaque on a tooth.....over time, it will build up and then cause problems.

I have a 2000 ford expo. with a 5.4, runs ok in town but when I hit 60 or more it seems to cut out and lose power. I took it to get a code read but the parts guy said there is nothing as if the port has no power, what does this mean......

I just read somewhere that a bad egr sensor might not read a p0401 & that it could actually trigger the p0171 & p0174 codes (too lean). Is this true?

I purchased a '01 Expedition 5.4 cheaper then expected, because it was doing the same thing. Sluggish during acceleration and would not pick up speed. The owner could not figure it out so he sold it to me for cheap. After multiple approaches, it finally fixed when I changed all 8 spark plugs myself. I didn't trust the mechanic to get the ones in the back. That did the trick! I couldn't change the boots at the time (funds), but changing the plugs seemed to fix my higher speed issue. Good Luck!
