    This man knows his stuff. One of his other videos taught me how to control my algae . After many years of buying "better and better" algaecide I learn it only weakens the cell walls of the algae and a double or triple dose of shock added one hour later does the rest. Then follow up with normal doses of shock each week after adding algaecide. Bingo, a beautiful pool this summer. Thank you very much. Sorry, I'm not in the Atlanta area, I'm in northern Ohio.

    I watch the Flow rate of the return. I use Filter balls and I skim my pool at least 6 times a day and I use a hose bag system so the bottom stays real clean then the Bag with the Hose. It seems to be working very well.

    I put a plug where the gauge was. Pressure from the port is what I've learned is the best test. Now if I could just get my heater to come on,,,

    I feel like I have to backwash every other day. Water during backwash is dirty (more cloudy than Brown) for about 20 seconds. After about 24-48 hours I will have to do it again as the return has very low pressure coming out. New sand put in this year to filter so all media is less than 2 months old. Any ideas on why I have to backwash so often?

    Just wondering how often do I need to change the sand filter?

    So an opinion on if the return is strong or not is what you gauge it on to backwash or not? Not very accurate I would say.

  • @kabayannoypi
    @kabayannoypi 5 років тому +1

    The water return is strong after the backwash and then after about 15-30mins the water gets really weak. The pump skimmer basket shows small bubbles of air at top. At start,the PSI would be at 15 then when it is weak it is at 21. So I would backwash for a minute and release the air release knob at the top of filter (usually, there is no air and just water coming out) then when I start pump again it would be strong again (15-17psi) What could be wrong with my DE filter? I have Hayward Power Flo Matrix 1HP, 1SF for 28gallon above ground pool. Do I have the right pump and filter (Hayward EC50) DE system for the volume of the pool?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  5 років тому

      It sounds like either the grids of your filter or becoming clogged up and need to be cleaned or you might have some sort of air leak coming into the pump. If you see a lot of air in your pump basket than air to your pump would be the reason if not it sounds to me like you need to clean your grids of your DE filter.

    I feel like this isn’t the best advice because slightly dirty sand filters better than completely clean sand, best to watch for a rise in filter pressure, but 10 psi is too broad and generalized. 125% if clean pressure is a better recommendation

    Why does my sand filter have low pressure? We tried backwashing but it is still very low pressure.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  5 років тому

      Sounds to me that either your water level in the pool is too low and your pump is sucking air or it's time for a sand changing air filter.

  • @Michaelzeiss

    Hi Chad, great video! Tell me if this idea works. For the past 5 years I've been backwashing once per week just like you said. In the city that I live in, the government has imposed extra taxes and charges for wastewater and also the "Stormwater" tax on all home owners. My water bill is now $700 extra from April - October each year. My idea is catching ALL the backwashed water in a very large clean drum. As the backwash water enters the drum, I have a filter to catch all the debris and algae. I let the water stand for 8 hours and let all the remaining impurities either settle to the bottom or float to the top and then have a hose introduce the "clean" backwashed water into the pool. Do you think this is feasible? As the pool starts up again in filtration mode, the cycle starts over again. Will this cause any problems to the filter and pump? Obviously I would monitor my chemistry very carefully and adjust accordingly. Let me know what you think? Thank you very much.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 років тому +2

      +Michael Zeiss that seems like it should work fine if you are filtering the water with a filter that picks up a finer particle than a sand filter and letting it sit for awhile. Another option is getting rid if the sand filter and getting a cartridge that doesn't need backwashing.

    i have a doughboy 20 ' round and have it installed about 3' in the ground. i have a sand filter that has great pressure at the discharge and great suction, but when i attach the creepy crawler it barely moves and gets caught on the hose. what causes this

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  9 років тому

      paul corda That's tricky to say without seeing it. Maybe the Kreepy Krawly is sucking air and breaking the suction. You could tell this by air pockets in the strainer pot of the pump. Or maybe the KK is clogged and preventing water flow or the rubber diaphram in the unit is going bad. You could check these things. If the filter system has good suction and discharge, then the cleaner should be working well. If not, it must fall on the cleaner.

    How do you know what size backwash tube to get? I have read if you get a 2 inch tube it will only fit on a 1 1/2 pvc is this true?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  4 роки тому

      It is true. Just measure the port on your sand filter to see what size it is but if it's an above-ground it's probably 1 and 1/2 in

    I seem to have a odd problem. My pool is filling on it's own. I have a in ground pool and for 4 years never had this problem. Water Bill is low. I dont see no water connection to the pool. What could it be. I have to drain it every day. Like 3 inches

    33’ round. Saw green algae on steps. So I put 5 bags of 1lb shock! Now it’s cloudy, steps are still green, but I see all the shock on the bottom of the pool! Should I go in an kick this up? Filter is green, I wash an when I put back in, it’s spits algae right back in the return! Should I vacuum an bypass filter an turn knob to waste an put hose in pool an fill at the same time?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  6 років тому

      Yes vacuum to your waste setting or what may be called filter to waste while you're filling the pool with water.

  • @noeltorres5239

    I have a question if my water is crystal clear and chemistry is perfect why I have this green stuff sitting at the bottom and after I vacuum and backwash it goes back to the pool the sand is 4 years old?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  7 років тому

      +Noel Torres potentially because this time of the year when the temperature is very hot even if your chemicals are right and your chlorine is normal the pool can still get green algae. Either your phosphate level can be high or it may be better to keep your chlorine level on the high side until we get back to normal temperatures.

    I have a pump that trips the gfi no matter what...i plug a light or any other load into this gfi and it doesnt trip. I change over to a regular breaker away from the gfi breaker and it works fine...wiring tests ok. I think the pump is causing the fault. Should I try another pump?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 років тому

      Pumps pull a lot more amperage than a light, so its not a good comparison. A skill saw or heavy power tool would be a better comparison. It seems to me that the issue is not pump related but breaker related. Could just be a bad outlet. I would call an electrician before I got a new pump.

    • @TheShadowartist11
      @TheShadowartist11 8 років тому +1

      +Above Ground Pros I found the issue, after megging out the motor found it to be faulty replaced it and no more problem. I just wanted to see if a pool person had any incite before I went ahead and replaced it. I am a licensed Electrician, this is just my first go round ever with a pool, my own.

    Hi do you have a video about metals in your pool? I have ALOT of metal in my water and I do not know how to get rid of it. What can I do?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 років тому

      +Jessica Vega At present I do not. Best thing is to take a sample of water to a pool company and tell them to test for metals (because they may not if you don't tell them). Usually a metal remover is all you need and it gets them out in a couple days.

    how long do you run your backwash in 12 inch pump (50 lbs of silica #20 sand) that is connected to approx 2K gallons pool?

  • @gizmocaca956
    @gizmocaca956 10 років тому +1

    i have and underground pool and my pump is running at 20 psi i backwash it and it keeps going at 20psi it that normal

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  10 років тому

      if its 20psi, then the water pressure blowing into the pool should be weak. Feel the pressure back into the pool and then backwash. The pressure should feel stronger after you backwash. If it does not, then it may be time to change your filter sand. If it does, then your gauge may be broken.

    • @abovegroundpros
