This motivated me to try this plant again. I thought when the plant melted, it died. I've also done the floating, and it's never worked. Good points for us beginner folks new to aquarium plants. The struggle is real.
“Hold onto the rhizome to plant.” Noted! 😉 Great tips. Really looking forward to the upcoming crypt video too, mine could use a bit more oomph! Thx Joanna you’re awesome! 😊 🌱 🤗
I started out with Crypt Wendtii and I love them, they do so well in my tank. 😊 I haven't been so fortunate with Crypt Petchii, though.. 🤔 I had to move some Crypts the other day and I expected them to sulk, but they haven't been too bad. I was really surprised at hard you cut it back! 😳 😂
Great information, I’m planning on getting a new crypt (most likely Parva) after watching several of your videos highlighting different variants.. To back up your point on never give up on them… I bought a pot of Cryptocoryne Albida locally, I was able to split it into 6 plantlet’s. I placed 2 in a 5 gallon, without trimming back the leaves and the other 4 in a 20 gallon cube, trimming back the leaves like you mentioned. The plants in the 5 gallon did so well I was able to propagate 2 new plantlet’s for a no tech bowl I started, they acclimated perfectly to the transfer, the ones in my 20 gallon were unfortunately bulldozed by a mystery snail. Almost 5 months later and me forgetting they existed I have 3 of them sending up new leaves.
@@thesmallscape Hello Joanna! Be careful with the snow heading our way. 1-3 inches predicted for Chicago. I will try again to go on chat on your next premier for Jason and you. Enjoy a warming cup of tea tonight.
crypts are my all time favorite plant with val a close second. I recommend buying some aqua soil and planting them into net pots if you have inert substrate.
You've given me confidence. I'm hearing I shouldn't bury the crown but you had told me that you like to bury it. Can you explain a little why? Also, I think I'm going to take your advice and cut off all the leaves and start fresh. I already have a beautiful crypt in my 15g, but this new red one is going in my 55g in the gravel. The other one came already attached to driftwood, and beautiful
My fav plants are anubias, buces, crypt parva, and weirdly, according to other people the soft, fluffy kind of hornwort. Never knew there were 2 kinds of hornwort until I got some of the sharper drop all it's needles all the time kind. People have told me to trim the leaves off new crypts before planting, but I was always so scared I'd just kill them quicker, lol. But I did finally try it and it really does help with them rebounding faster and healthier. 👍❤️👍
What can I use as a retaining wall for aquascaping? What exactly is aqua safe Plastic or glass to use in the 55 gallon tank? My objective; I’m trying to build a spot in the back two corners for my two large aquarium co-op bubblers. Hide them, so it’s got to be tall and then like an Aztec pyramid I’ll then have more retaining walls of other heights to create different underwater garden beds for my planted 55 community tank to hide the whole shape. Hope this makes sense. Create if there was a plastic of sorts I can cut to the different sizes then silicone them together and to the tank so the sand doesn’t leak. Any helps will be great! Love your channel such fast videos with so much info.
Thanks for vid! Crypts, annubias I have great success with. Java fern I had mixed success with (I buried some of the plants with rhiozomes? and they died). Other plants nah...the leaves are melted or they are stem plants and then after awhile, they float up.
For me, crypts take patience; it's taken two years for my crypts to really start growing and looking great. I have a low light cold water tank, so that may have something to do with the slow growth; but they look amazing now. Thanks for the video. Take care, be well
The place where the roots stop, and the stem begins is the crown. I get annoyed at myself when I can't retrieve a word!😅 If you have the patience, tissue cultures are a great way to get lots of plants for future projects. I've had a lot of success with crypts from tissue cultures. It takes about a year to get useable sized small plants. I have some Cryptocoryne undulata that I got from a Petco tissue culture that look great. They have a deep burgundy color even under medium light.
@@thesmallscape I've actually had some success treating them as epiphytes! They do still melt and go through a period of weird transition but they do quite well in tank that has adequate nutrients in the water column. Similar to hygrophila piinnatifida which is also technically not an epiphyte but can grow as such ☺️ you should try a small one wedged between wood or rocks close to substrate in a high nutrient tank and see how it does for you.
@@thesmallscape I would avoid attaching them to things with super glue or super glue gel but soft cotton thread, or just gently wedged between structure they do well ☺️ I'll have to take some photos of the crypts I have that have grown this way
@@thesmallscape I was also surprised to learn that crypts will grow happily attached to hardscape. George Farmer filmed the Tropica plant greenhouses, and crypts on lava rock is a big seller.
@@AussieAquatic yes! I'd forgotten about that video! I first saw crypts grown similarly to epiphytes watching an MD video, but didn't really think much of it bc I'd wedged them between rocks and wood in my tanks years ago bc I didn't know they weren't anubias at first 😅. They grew like weeds!
Getting more into cryptys . The only way I can keep them in the substrate is to plant them in a planter of some type because my super reds seem want to fight for territory over them and rip them out. Great news I got a second walk-in greenhouse. Putting up beginning of March. Yes Farmer Jo it’s that time of year ❤!
I love crypts, but I have terrible luck with C. balansae. Any tips? I don't know if you've tried C. pontederiifolia, but it's super cute. I thought mine had died because the wendtii bounced back and that one didn't, but a few months later it started growing.
I LOVE Crypts. Yes, they melt with the least provocation, but they rebound well and quickly in a well-lit tank (more slowly in a low-light tank). I've had them melt when moving from one tank to another, then others not melt at all when moved. I've also had them melt when I changed the light on a tank (dimmer to brighter). And sometimes they just melt for no apparent reason - happened a few months ago in one of my 29g tanks with no changes at all to the tank. Those rebound quickly, like nothing happened without me doing anything. NO idea what that was about?! I hope to eventually get more varieties of crypts.
So really you're saying they melt easily. I have 1 in my 15g and I'm planting a red one in my 55g next week, but so far the one in my 15g is doing great and hasn't melted. I just got it a few days ago though. It looks very healthy. Green leaves, no brown. So if it does melt, I just remove the leaves and stem and it will re-grow?
Mistakes is how we learn. Always great to learn new things from your videos.
Thank you Joanna for your wonderful presentations. The tips have helped me grow excellent plants in every freshwater tank I start.
Wonderful to hear! 🌱🌱🌱

Great video!!! I crop the leaves off the crypts anytime I get new ones or even anytime I move them!! Speeds up the process a lot!
Nice! Chop chop!
Thank you. Relly clear and pretty concise.

Well said! Yes, BUT what you don’t have is algae - so there’s that. ☺️
I love crypts. And the way they look. They're some of my favorites.
What if I just let the melt happen without removing? Does that hinder the regeneration process?
Hey dude! I personally think it slows it down a bit, probably not that big of a deal though. Not like years. Lol. It also looks …yucky 😜 that’s all.
Playing catch up today! I have been guilty for sure of just chucking them in!! oops! Thanks for the info!

Yes they are! ☺️☺️☺️
Great crypt video! I'd add that they do well attached to driftwood and rocks like anubias do

I have the same problem with crypt melt when I move them from tank to tank. I love them! But really hate the transition time... LOL
Yes, the transition time is a bummer. ☺️
Plants can and likely will go through a shock phase. I think dosing with some phosphate free aquatic plant fertilizer helps get it through that phase.
Looking to get some crypts so this should be super useful for me!
Good luck!🌱🌱🌱
i took down my tank and floated my crypts and now I they don't look great but they will stand back up right?

Is there any crypts you can't cut the leaves off before you plant them. Like the flatter growth vs the more vertical growth.
Yes, I briefly mentioned it, the little guy - Crypt parva can’t be cut back like that. ☺️
Somehow I never thought about crypts having rhizomes! I always think “don’t plant the rhizome!” as a rule from Anubias. But OK to bury here? Hmmm
😊
Didn't mean to hit the thumb down dog nudged my hand lol
Lol. Either way, I wouldn’t blame you 🤭

Crypts don't like me, and I don't like crypts!
😂😂 fair enough.
