  • Welcome to our Intro Free Motion Quilting series! We are so excited about this course so we can help give you the confidence to finish your quilts yourself on your home sewing machine or longarm.
The series officially starts February 1, but today we're sharing a video on how to use Full Line Stencils and Pounce Pads.
These stencils and marking tools have the ability to change your quilting forever. The clear lines to follow will help you build the muscle memory you need to get a stitch down, so you can customize it when you move onto freehand quilting.
And for hard to create patterns, like feathers, you can just follow the stencil forever and always, get great results, and no one has to know you used a stencil because the chalk lines go away and stay away.
We have created four reorderable quilt kits using solid fabrics from Northcott Colorworks. The richly colored fabrics are fabulous to work with, and it will make it very easy to see your stitches and make your stitching the star or the show.
Make sure you grab a stencil kit, which contains the four stencils and pounce pad we are using to learn the four basic stitches. And grab the quilt pattern, which is FREE with the purchase of any Free Motion Quilting Kit.

I’m having trouble with the chalk going through the stencils. I changed to dark color but couldn’t get it right. I remembered what you said about speed. I slowed my machine down to low and that was the key. I had to use the old stencil and pen method but the speed was the key!

Hey, thank you for a great video series, so far! I have a question about the direction of the batting. I've looked it up in the past, and it always says to put the bumps toward the bottom. I've listened to yours twice and you said to put them against the top. Am I confused? Help!

So apparently there is a heated debate about this in the quilting world. I have always been taught to put the bumpy side up. I just checked out what Quilter’s Dream says and their batting can go either way, but many quilters prefer to have the batting lumpy side down like you were taught. But apparently it doesn’t matter.

I've bought these from you and tried several times to use them to quilt but the chalk wipes off the quilt top and I can't see it not even doing one pattern then quilting then marking etc. Not sure why. Now I will say quilting one block at a time they work well fir me. Plus pin basting really doesn't work for me with these. I need the iron batting or basting spray. I'm sure it's user error. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Full Line Stencil recommends spraying it with Best Press and waiting for it to dry before starting. We cover it in the video.

I spray lightly with aerosol hairspray after stenciling.
