- Day 417 - Today we're exploring the Omaha Beach landing site here in Normandy! In WWII, this was one of many beaches in the d-day operation and visiting it has been a bucket list item for us for a long time. Such a surreal experience!

My great grandfather was in the 2nd infantry in the dog green sector in Omaha beach on D-Day he was in the first wave and survived.
(Lt Micheal Campbell)
Nate Campbell G you mean 2nd division right?
There is an old guy down the road from me you'd swear was some ancient gardener hippy guru but he was there too.
That's amazing! Have you been able to go? They have the signs right there indicating the sectors - and I believe Dog Green was the same one portrayed (according to the dialogue) in Saving Private Ryan as well.
Merci a ton grand grand père !
I chocked up during this video. So many young men died for my freedom. My parents were young kids when they were liberated in the Netherlands. I so realise what they did for us. I am forever grateful for what they did😥
You get it! Absolutely! On the monument there it talks about how the soldiers who fought that day were not fighting to gain anything for themselves, but rather just to restore to normal what it was before a man with an idea surrounded by those who enabled him decided to act. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
This video reminds me that we are so fortunate and that our good fortune was inherited. It was paid for by others blood, sweat and tears. June 6th, 1945. Never forget.
1944, but echo your sentiments.
1944
1944, but yeah.
Indeed! And the memorial there reminds people that the soldiers there were not trying to GAIN anything but rather to restore back to normal what was lost when one man, surrounded by those who enabled him, decided to take action. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy"
That downbeat coffee shop music is really annoying. Otherwise, you guys do great vids.. keep up the good work.
It's a powerful place, isn't it? I visit it regularly.....just to remember my granddad, who landed at Sword beach.....
That bridge is genuine. I've got the chance to walk over it when they were doing maintenance in 2007.
That's awesome you get to see these beaches regularly. Omaha really was beautiful!
Good evening Adventures
When I was stationed in Germany, my unit which was part of the Big Red 1, we followed the war path from Omaha Beach to Berlin. This too like many over your travels have brought back so many memories. Thank for what you do!!!
That beach looks so peaceful and nice today, completely surreal! The first thing that comes to my mind hearing "Omaha Beach" is that old movie "The Longest Day" and a whole bunch of D-Day documentaries. Can hardly wrap my mind around the fact that the picture perfect beach had been soaked in blood and guts only 70-odd years ago.
That was literally my first thought: What a beautiful beach! One cannot imagine now what happened there back then!
Have a safe trip up north 😊
Yeah, such a surreal place!
You guys have a really nice way about you. Really enjoyed this video about the Omaha Beach, thanks.
Must visit those beaches someday.
The music kinda takes away from the intensity of the location
That beach is now a place to vibe not to fight? Ok?
The best war museum to visit is in Caen. Also you should have visited the cemetary at Colleville-sur-Mer (or maybe you did). If you like the coastline, you should also try and visit Brittany. It's basically the peninsula West of Rennes. So from Mont Saint Michel, just head West, and from Saint Malo onwards it's just gorgeous. Rocky colorful coast, pretty islands. Even the inland is nice with the menhirs and dolmens from thousands of years ago. Mont Saint Michel is super touristy, it must be in the top5 of the most visited places in France, with the Louvre, Eiffel Tower or Versailles. You were lucky to see it without too many people.
Little fact, there used to be a real road leading to the island, so that it wasn't an island anymore. The long bridge you walked on is all new, and before there were giant carparks at the foot of the island. It was thought to be ugly, so now you can't drive there anymore. They destroyed the road and causeway, returning Mont Saint Michel to its real island state, as the water goes under the bridge you guys walked on. All this to make it more authentic, as from 2000 to 2010, the site lost like 30% visitors because it was thought to be a tourist trap, too expensive, crowded, with just cheap souvenirs and overpriced bad food shops.
The Somme battlefields and war memorials are a sight to see also. The Thiepval memorial, Ypres and the Newfoundland Memorial Park give you a sense of the scale and vast amounts of wasted lives...
The "Museum" in Caen is garbage, it's an exibition about peace, not about the actual artifacts and battles. The best museum is in Bayeux "Battle of Normandy Museum" next to the British/Commonwealth cemetery.
Very special video guys...amazing...and the background music was fine. Thank you...
very surprised you guys have only 9k subscribers. the content and video quality is top notch. I predict you hit a 100k in 4 months. good luck dudes. from Salida,Ca
Wow, thanks a lot! Really appreciate the confidence :D
michelle perry I completely agree!
Kayla's Korna going to Omaha because it's famous it's in movies. My eyes roll
77,000 now- just over a year later!
Heading to Normandy next week for a couple of days taking the car really looking forward to it
Great video.. But tone the background music volume down a touch?..
maybe ask for your money back?
I loved the edit Eric! And what an impressive place to see! Cheers guys!
Very excited to see what you guys do in Oslo! I am going to Europe for this first time in my life this summer and we are landing in Oslo! We will only be there for a few days but I hope we are able to see the fjords! and some viking ships! Congratulations on 10,000 subscribers! You two make amazing videos and I am sure there are plenty more subscribers to come!
+Aaron Stiles thanks so much! There's actually a Viking ship museum in Oslo, definitely a must see 👌
a little known factoid is there is still the last piece of the mulberry harbour that was never delivered to Normandy is still in the sound / river at Ullapool in north west Scotland , the weather was so bad they couldn't deliver it on time , i'm off there next year on the outer Hebrides bike tour :)
wow! That's really neat!
I wish I did it the way you guys did. I was on a tour and didn’t spend nearly as much time at Omaha Beach as I wanted. But we did get to go to Pont du Hoc and the American Cemetery in Colesville su Mer. Those places were a must to see.
I like that you appreciate history and want to visit places of historical significance. A really beautiful beach, but such a painful history. Good vlog.
We totally agree! Standing in the footsteps of history and picturing the scene adds such gravitas to your experience. We've gone to Normandy for a month for the past 4 years and learn so much every time. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
It’s Anzac Day here in Australia 🇦🇺- lest we forget
God bless all who lost their lives on that day.
Why not everyone in ww2
@@MairusPleilinen I agree but this was a comment concerning the video. My grandfather fought in japan so I bless all the men and women who served in that war and all the wars and conflicts throughout the world.
france has loads of bunkers all along the coast, lots are over grown and boarded up but some are still pretty intact and open to go in.
Yes! It's so powerful to see that the past never really goes away. It stays there as a reminder of what happened there. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
sorry but the music on this one is distracting n a pain
but great subjects 😃
Hats off for visiting this location, must have been an emotional experience, kind of different from how I imagined, I thought there was a beach with a kind of cliff face from which the enemy fired at the landing craft, but the raised bluff from which the German soldiers were firing is actually quite a bit away, which makes it all the more dangerous as the allied soldiers had further to run up the beach before they reached any kind of safety.Actually we have never been to France, looks good. Glad to see all eating in France is not of the cordon bleu variety--yeah--you can pop into a little bakery shop and get a cheese and onion pasty--keeping it real as always--another good one guys.
Thanks for dropping by Billy! Yeah it was definitely a somber place. And yeah, it was much larger than I thought it would be! It must have been damn near impossible to cross that beach.
You guys and Way Away are the two most under subscribed vlogs, keep up the great work.
hah, thanks a lot!
Tip for driving in France, ensure one has an up to date Road Atlas or Sat. Nav. so one can avoid the Toll Roads, it will take longer to reach destination but one gets to see more of rural France than from the Autoroute.
I got addicted to watching your channel because we've been to so many of the same places. I lived near Helvellyn and used to hike and bike up there, you've been to Omaha Beach in NZ near where I now live and also Omaha in Normandy. Also you flew over Ladybower Reservoir where I regularly mountain biked. Mont St Michel.
Congrats on 10k subscribers guys! Keep up the good work :)
Thanks so much!
Looking forward to an epic 10k celebration vid now ;)
Cool Video guys! Thanks for posting it. My wife and I will be there on Saturday and Maybe Monday if we don't see it all. We will be following in your foot steps :)
Hey! How was your trip to Normandy?? Were you able to see these sites? If you ever go back let us know! We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
Thank you for making us travel during this dark times :)
I would like to suggest you to go to vaucluses in south of France, that's a place with yellow and red gravel and small villages on top of rocks separated by fields of lavender, this villages are gordes, ansouis, cucuron, and others.
That's the place which amazed me the most in France, I discovered it only 6 years ago, whereas I live in France since my birth, 39 years ago.
What to see in Bayeux? Let me think. Surely there was a tapestry of some sort?
the original comic book!
Really enjoy watching your videos - so jealous of all the great food you get to eat and all the places you travel too! :-)
AWESOME video
Completely unrelated to travel:
When you're looking for your next Netflix show to binge watch, I would *highly* recommend the CNN series' _The 60s,_ and _The 70s_
Both are excellent and really do a great job of not only showing what happen during those decades but representing it in a way that allows you to feel why it was important.
+Jacob Carlson (Check Out Jacob) we'll check it out!
Love this !
That was really cool going up on the hill overlooking the beach and exploring those bunkers. I think next time we go out there, a car is definitely the way to do it. Have fun in Oslo. We really enjoyed exploring that town (although we didn't enjoy how expensive it is!). -Brian
Yeah, cars make such a difference especially in the countryside! Yeah Oslo is pretty outrageously priced 😬 Can only stay there a few days and no drinking for us 😂
Did you not visit the cemetery overlooking Omaha ? The one in Saving Pte Ryan ? Can't believe you didn't see the Bayeux Tapestry. Go also to Arromanches and Pegasus Bridge.
HELLOOOOOOO you crazy travelers!🤓🤘🏻❤️ Its just amazing and must be full of emotion to walk where something so historic and tragic happened. I have never seen it like this before and appreciate the invite. Take care you guys and stay safe. You guys KICK ASS!
+Kerrie Wheeler thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Amazing video, thanks so much. Touching.
So gald you enjoyed it! It was quite a powerful place to visit.
Ah yes one can't help but wonder how such cruel things could happen at such a beautiful place!
Nice video guys & you got some really really nice shots in this. Love it!
Thanks so much!
i visited here as a child with school, too young to take it in, i want to go back here
+Adventure With Mike definitely hope you do!
I totally recommend visiting the Bayeux Tapestry. It’s amazing. Best to visit off season though as the queues can be crazy.
Totally agree! We usually go in February or March and it's a wonderful time to visit these places.
Note: The music blows!
The Brits offered the States the technology of "Hobarts Funnies" these were armored vehicles with flails which destroyed Mine fields and barbed wire fortifications and many other unusual vehicles that could dump logs in ditches etc to allow infantry to pass (Google it). The US declined the offer as " American air power would destroy the German resistance prior to the invasion". I'm pretty sure if the arrogant idiot General that made that decision had been on those beeches he would have been shot by his own brave troops who suffered much more than they need have! Very brave men, such a criminal waste.
Hi guys, started watching your channel cos I typed in Americans trying English food and your Lonsdale video popped up, I have no interest in travel but I cant stop watching your channel its fascinating, great content well made videos that's why you've got so many subscribers so quickly. great job cant wait to see what you get up to in Norway.
+Colin Holbrook (cmdr *ONIONHEAD*) wow, thanks so much! Curious, is it mostly just the food videos you like watching or do you find our travel content interesting too?
All of it, I'm hooked. kudos for the sheeps head dude, I couldn't have!
The music is popping my ears. Who decided on THAT?? Unwatchable, sorry.
loved it.
Oh man, you went to Bayeux but didn't go see the tapestry? That seems like such a missed opportunity. Omaha Beach looked like it was worth visiting though.
Yeah, sadly we didn't really know about it before going! Hopefully we'll have another opportunity some day 👍
I was thinking that too. But since all the restaurants were closed, I figured the museum might have been closed too.
It's a shame you were in Bayeux on a Sunday. You could have gone to see the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts the last time that England was invaded in 1066 by the Normans (French) led by William the Conqueror.
Loving your videos! Keep it up. I wish you had more views tho.
Thanks! More video views you mean?
The iron jack type thing was on the beach as an obstacle for the Americans trying to move onto the beach.
Yeah, tanks cannot move past them -engineers would have to set demolition charges to destroy them so the tanks could move up the beach. Unfortunately a bunch ended up in the channel or just sank in the mud.
I am surprised you went to Bayaux and didn't see the tapestry but you did see the cathedral. 😀
It`s beauty today momentarily suspends belief in the amount of blood spilled on those sandy stretches only 73 years ago. Clearly the beaches shallow slope towards the abutting cliffs made it ideal for the flat bottomed LCT-202 boats which carried the men to the shore; the principle is ancient because the Viking Long Boats (which is apposite given this is Normandy: `land of the North-men`) were similar in that they were navigable in shallow waters of the strand: stretch of sandy beach. Still it is easy to see how much you were all moved by the experience - which is to your credit as adventurers and explorers of our quirky little planet.
Kian2002 my father said blood ran red in that water and they had to wade through it.
Kian2002, thank you for all the information! It definitely makes sense that they'd pick that beach after seeing it in person. But you're right that it's current beauty and tranquility makes it almost impossible to imagine what that beach and day was like all those years ago.
awsome videos keep up the great work top
+Darren Collins thanks!
That was quite surreal, wow!
It kinda sucks that as you travel so much, that both of you get car sick. Fortunately I don't have that problem, but I do tend to get seasick pretty easily, lol.
Don't forget Utah.
O my God that tank there is a M4 Sherman
As for the tiny cars, voiturettes, they are popular with a certain part of the population as they don't need a full driving licence and can be driven from age 14. They can be driven by adults who have lost their licence. They are low power, under 50cc (cubic centimetres), with a max speed of 45km/hr, so a right pain when outside towns on winding roads with speed limits of 90km/hr.
Wow, that's super interesting! Thanks for the info :D
I love this video and history that beach was very flat on d-day because the bombers missed the beach to make holes and the navy shells fell short. most of the special tanks sunk. so the men were on their own. as there would say it was a cluster fcuk or fubar. great videos keep them coming.
+Phill Brocklehurst thanks for the info!
thé Mulberry ports were British designed and engineered, they weren't American... its incredible Américains perception of History différés from actual historical fact.. i am from Normandy and American ignorance from visitors nevers fail to astound me..
+John Daniel by "they" I was referring to the allies 👍 things aren't always as they appear ✌️
John Daniel, without the financial, logistical and manpower support of the US the British would never have got as far as D-day, no the US didn't win the war on their own, neither did the western allies, it took a push from all over, with the Soviet Union also playing a major major part, that aside, Eric and Alison are far from ignorant, I think they are 2 of the nicest people on youtube.
Eric and Alison f ever you are back in the UK, try and see if you can get a trip to the Maunsell sea forts in the Thames estuary, they are amazing.
Oh mate, take it easy why don't you.
I visited the Normandy beaches a few years ago, along with some museums and the Pegasus bridge which was very moving. I find it sad when people get into a ‘who won the war’ argument, it was a true group effort, no one country could have won without the others and it belittles the sacrifices that brave soldiers made. It’s important to remember.
You got a thumbs-up for the bit about "they are 2 of the nicest people on youtube." They are completely out of my demographic, me being an old, grumpy fart, and them being who they are. I introduced my daughter to them and she loves them too.
This video is just a series of wow. How lucky of you guys to get to experience these things!😄😊 Hope you can also visit my country soon, Phiippines and show its own share of wonders☺ Good content as always!
Thanks Erica! We're actually trying to figure out a way to get to the Philippines within the next year...so hopefully we'll be headed your way soon 😄
Erica Morales p
You know, unless you've been a direct witness of the D-Day, no one can find out how it was especially when you walk on the beaches these days. I'd like to go back there and having a moment at the military cemetary(ies ?) but on the other side, i wouldn't. Because it would get too emotional for my part. I'm getting emotional by thinking about it... By the way, i'm french.
I would highly recommend it -yes it's emotional, but our emotion is the least we can offer as a testament to their sacrifice. Each headstone being an average 20 year old with 60 years of life they never lived. Multiplying that by every headstone you see really paints the true picture of the magnitude of sacrifice it took to restore peace after one man, surrounded by those who enabled him, decided to take action. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
yes a lot of young brave Americans died on that beach.
The gravity you feel visting this place is unreal. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy"
If you guys go back to the UK try and visit the Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset.
And the Fleet Air Arm museum at Yeovilton, 40 miles up the road, with the second Concorde prototype.
The music is so inappropriate for the subject matter.
Little bit shocked that you guys didn't go to the huge US cemetery above the beach. Now that is a spectacular place to visit. Nice vlogs though good work.
+Penfold Smith we didn't have time, but we'll definitely check it out next time!
Ok I had to quit the video after Omaha beach because the music was just driving my wife and I crazy. Loud & repetitively monotonous. Ahhhhh!!!! find some new music guys or at least change it up and turn the volume down a little. Despite the music loved the video and content, but didn't give it a thumbs up because of the music. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
You guys should have seen the Bayeux Tapestry while you were there. Otherwise...very nice channel, keep up the good work.
+Danny Lake-Giguère sad we missed it!
Where are the gwrman bunkers now?
I believe D Day was the largest maritime event.
How great was the memorial?
It looks so great in the vlog, wondering how amazing is it in real....
It was pretty epic and quite ominous! Pretty fitting in our opinions though.
Why is your music so loud? Please adjust your levels. Trying to listen to what you're saying and then get blasted.
In America we drink cold tea in bottles
That´s great, but man, buy a steadycam
"A quaint little town we think is called 'bayou"..." For fucks sake.
I can’t believe those bunkers aren’t blocked off to be preserved.
right! That's what we thought too! In America, a small piece of the bunker would be behind bullet proof class and a red velvet rope. There, you can walk into it exactly where it was and look up to see the wood lining the ceiling of the bunker turn dark and charred and determine that this must have been where the infantry here decided to use a flame thrower to clear out the rest of the bunker.
We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
You'll love Scandinavia, it's one of the most friendliest places to visit, I found the people so nice, and the women are stunning, everyone is good looking, lol
Didn't you go to wn62 and the 1st infantry division memorial
you missed the american military cemetery
And the German cemetery down the road a bit. We just made a video about it on our channel if you're interested. "5 Tips for Visiting Normandy" :)
That wasn't a battle. it was a massacre !!
Pink floyd 😊
i would like to be a guide for you and US tourists, i know many things about this period !!!
Do you know if a credit card is needed to rent a car or could I do it with a debit card?
I remember D-Day like it was a week ago. It was a good movie.
the tiny car is for people with no driving licence.
Saving private Ryan 😍💯
For real. We actually watched it a few days prior!
10k!!!!!!!!
What is up with the music?
where is the Polish flag in front of the museum memorial D-Day ......(it wasn't worth it)
You guys get motion sick a lot. I get motion sick too in cars. How do you deal with that on a regular basis?
+Jessica Shook Dramamine 😄
The Endless Adventure so much Dramamine! Lol 😂
☝️ exactly! Except that one time I didn't have any in Costa Rica, and then I just threw up over the side of the boat 😷 😂 -A
pop was there first wave and he said it was horrendous and would hardly speak about it.
We can't even imagine. Even with seeing so many pictures, artifacts and videos, it's still impossible to understand what that day was really like..
Yes he would rarely speak about it he's in a lot of clips and he did the checking for the hidden mines..A few buddies passed in his arms and he tried to save his friend blown to bits and was wounded himself..His legs and mentally. A 19 year old boy a man in no time may he rest in peace now. Thank you again for this.
Not much to show for the vid time. You missed the American Cemetary at Omaha.

Notifications are just plain annoying. They tell me about videos when I'm not able to watch them. Subscriptions work fine, I can catch up when convenient.
True! We only have notifications for some select channels, the rest we always find from home page or just by browsing to their channel.
Should have Been there when it happened Boy would you have Been really excited !!
The fact you're a grown man that says Sammiches doesn't give Americans a good look.
the two of them are a credit to the USA, lovely people and brilliant (British superlative there!) videos
@@ufewl I'm glad you explained the word brilliant to me.
@@Gulliedoutbigup americans say awesome
@@ufewl Thank you again for explaining that to me. I honestly had no idea what either of those words meant. I am 4 years old and haven't started school yet. What are words?
@@Gulliedoutbigup No problem, I am sure you will learn a lot more words when you start school. A word is whatever you want it to mean.
travel vloggers that get motion sickness hmmm
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
very sad.
