Thanks for all of your reviews and videos. Much appreciated.
As a new subscriber to your channel I want to let you know that I really enjoy your straight forward videos.
Hey Phil I know this is a old video but I just got a Fender 65 drri & am looking for a ts style pedal. Anyways would you recommend the overrated special or something else? Thanks in advance Phil!
Jimmy
I think the green rhino sounds better, at least on the video. Real life may be different? Who else is totally over drive pedals at this point? There must be 10,000 drive pedals on the market. I find my amps usually sound way better on their own, unless you're trying to "tighten" it up with a tube screamer type circuit for lead sounds or whatever. Most drive pedals that I try are way weak compared to my amp's natural drive. Not that any of my amps are anything special, but most of the drive pedals I've tried just seem to suck tone rather than add to it. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
On this end (to my ear), they sound identical.
On a previous video you mentioned that you will be posting a video on tuners or tuner pedals since you left it off your four pedals you must have. I can;t find the tuner video on your channel. Would you please post a link if I have over looked it.
Thanks, Kelly
+Kelly Kimberly I messed up. I did it but named it something else. Here is that video. I will most likely do another when I do the Pedal board essentials video. ua-cam.com/video/QIQcglSK8d4/v-deo.html
This is part question, part suggestion. Those of us not intimate with the green rhino already might like to hear the unaffected signal. Also I'm curious what amp are you running through?
+Matthew Hale That was a Mesa Rectoverb 25. Thank you for the suggestion. You are right it is nice to haw clean the amp is. If it helps the amp was super clean not dirt at all. Thank you for posting, good tips.
Phill, You mentioned in a video that the Carl Martin PlexiTone is your favorite pedal. So I bought one, and now it's my goto favorite. But how does it compare to the Way Huge Green Rhino Mk 4? Not to be confused with the older model in this video.
It is different. The Rhino MK4 is a low gain kinda Zen Drive pedal. So they are just to different. like Fender vs Marshall
Good video, interesting backstory to it. Seems as if there's a small boost more to the OS Way Huge but both sound good.
So a little off topic, i'm looking for a solid SG or similar guitar that sounds really good for not too much money. For some reason i cant really find a lot of info on SG's. I already have an epiphone and i love the feel but the tone could use a little work. I guess what i'm asking is should i replace the pickups in the epiphone or should i maybe go for a gibson model and if so which one. For pickups i was thinking about maybe some Seymore alnico 2 pros for that GNR kind of vibe. Whats your opinion? Cool videos by the way.
+The Llama God Pick ups will definitely improve your Epi's tone. If you like the guitar I say upgrade. Get some used pick ups or new ones. Just keep the old ones because if you get ride of the guitar you still will have the new pick ups to put in something else. If you are not in love with the guitar then it is time to sell it and take that pick up money and the cash from the Epi and get the guitar you want. On the Gibson SG front I like the faded finish ones you see at Guitar Center. Used you can find them for $400 to $700. If it was me I would want to spend about $500.00 Here are some www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-SG-Special-Faded-Electric-Guitar-2008-with-Case-/252283686867?hash=item3abd478fd3:g:LyYAAOSwWTRWvCfo and www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Gibson-SG-Special-Faded-with-Hardshell-Case-/131707260508?hash=item1eaa5d4e5c:g:r7gAAOSwfZ1WXxr3
ok thanks. that helps a lot
The difference is so subtle here it is possible that youtube compression completely squashed any audible changes. I didn't hear any difference, or very, very little at the most. Listening through decent active monitors too.
Nice sounding pedal. Me want. Somewhere out there, Alexander Dumble is blowing a fuse.
This makes me want a GR now! I've got a Swollen Pickle, and Havalina, I love them both!
so is it supposed to be "Dumble Overdrive Special-in a box" type of pedal?
+TheZooropaBaby No not really. Dunlop reps said they were just fooling around. It is misleading though. I thought the same when I first saw the pedal. It's just a tweaked version of the Green Rhino.
my pick tin is 1,880 of 2,000, second run?
So the difference is 'a bit more' and the ability to boost 500 kHz instead of 100 kHz?
Christian 500khz?, 100khz?
I think it's cool that they were honest with the name although if not for you comparing the two most of us wouldn't know they were comparable. The difference I heard wasn't enough to spend more on the new one. Thanks man for helping us all out with the truth about gear and maybe not getting taken advantage of just because we don't know.
seems like it punches a different frequency
So similar, the 100hz boost is real useful
It seems like the overated had a little more Umph to it. The chords sounded clode
but I could tell a difference in the sols. Thanks!
+jim leiss I know it sounds crazy, But they both sounded good and I could be happy either way, But I just felt a bond to the Overrated Special.
What good is this demo if you're not adjusting the mid control?
I do love way huge products tho. They all sound great to me
Overated Special: that's a great name!
I have had the GR Mk11 for about a year and love it to bits, will never part with it
I want to thank you for your review. I was going to buy an Overrated until I watched this. I bought a used Rhino and I love it, and way cheaper.
Ive got both and i actually much prefer the Green Rhino to the os. The os seems to rob the natural tone and is too midrange for my liking, especially when using a strat or a tele. It sounds better with a Les Paul possibly but my preference is definitely with the Green Rhino (MkII)
Btw. How do I get one. ?
any Way Huge dealer has them. my shop also has them.
That's the old Green Rhino. The NEW Green Rhino is the same as the Overrated Special but with two extra features. The NEW Green Rhino has an additional active EQ around the 500kHz range as well as a "classic" switch if you wanted the original design of the previous model of Green Rhino. Wish you had compared the NEW GR instead of the old one.
Also the MKIV is smaller to about the same size as the OS. Just picked up the MKIV and it is amazing!
is dimed, full on o full off?
+adsfaedaer My understanding is... "ON 10"
You always seem so down to earth . If ever was anyone on u tube demonstrating gear I could have a cup a coffee with and talk guitars + gear think it be Phil. No big head im a u tube star bullshit ,just honest opinion and knowledge .
Struggling between Jhs moonshine ,the steel string dumble- analog- Always 4 get the companys name, also a Dumble made in Japan with abalone top that I cant pronounce and pricey at $200+ shipping . The Way Huge is a No brainer at $135 with a special 6 months interesting free payment at a local shop.
Was excited to see Phillip got a copy of the Overrated Special to demo! But while the pedal sounds cool, my initial interest in it waned when I found out the price tag and it came out that it's virtually indistinguishable from the Green Rhino, which is a $129 pedal. Pretty cynical of Dunlop to charge $70 more for the following items: (1) A D-Style livery; (2) the exclusivity of a 1,000-pedal "limited run" edition; and (3) "endorsement" by Joe Bonamassa. It's almost like Dunlop is clowning their customers to see how much more they can sell the same pedal for just by screwing with marketing. If anything, though, this pedal made me more interested in the Green Rhino!
+StormJH1 Yes, they did the same thing with the FET drive. They painted them black and called it Joe's sig overdrive. So I got the white one, same thing as Joe's black FET and cheaper
I wouldn't go as far as calling it shady when it's announced to market by the builder at NAMM as being the same. It's a collectors thing being a limited sig model that will be worth more when they are gone.
Just turn the volume up on your amp up a couple notches with the green rhino and save yourself 70 bucks. They sound the same. Just the overrated special is a bit louder. No ?
the OS over all volume out put is less than the green Rino. but it has more gain than the Green Rino. it is just a tweeted Green Rino. but I like it.
I thought your first Impression was the Way Huge pedal was over rated. I got to stop reading the titles of videos incorrectly. With headphones on the differences weren't very noticeable. Either of those get the job done.
Every Way Huge Pedal should be called the Overrated Special, I've had around 5, the Fat sandwich, Pickle, Echopuss, Green Rhino, a few more. They were all decent for sure, but I replaced them all or just outright sold them pretty quickly. They're really nothing special, the only one I still have is a clone of the Piercing Moose. That one is a very unique take on a Foxx Tone Machine, I'll never sell that one. NEVER
Still relevant 8 years later. Just picked up an overrated special for a very good price
is there any difference between the 1 in 1000 and the mass production run that was recently released
they are both Tube Scremers
They're making 2,000. According to Sweetwater
hey i typed these messages to you and will.ill send you a priv. message with pics of the guitar i have have question and it would mean alot if you could just give me you best answer because i looked everywhere for a legit answer. i paid 5$ for a junk guitar to try a project. the guitar was so cheap i decided to have some fun and just see what happens so here's the question (if you rather me PM you i will) I bought a classical guitar "junk" i want to cut it and make it a little thinner than say a hollow body Gibson around about... and add my own bracing and back piece and pickup/wiring to make it closest i can to a semi hollow because im going to put a 2x4 to cover sound hole and a 1/4 inch back of pine for the back BUT.... its a classical guitar SO... the real question is with your knowledge of years of building other than just saying its not worth it lol even though that be prob correct what stings will a classic guitar neck hold up the longest being no trust rod that are not nylon so the pickups with work (just 1 single coil strat like pickup) its just something i want to try for fun ill take some pick of the guitar just to give u an idea and send to you are just post a slide show on this ch.
+Psycho Unicorn The big issue is the neck. With out a truss rod even if you just use.009 gauge strings that is going to have more tension than the classical style guitar neck can take. That being said I have seen classical guitars come in the shop with steel strings and the action gets super high. To the point they are unplayable. You can do it, But you are going to need to keep the string gauge on the lighter side. Sounds to me it is just your time at risk. So I say if you got the time, do it.
+Phillip McKnight thanks man yea I'm going to just do it little at a time when I get bored but hey you never know thanks for reply
They do sound very similar but I think the Overrated Special sounds a little better in this video.
Have to listen with headphones. I think I’d go the overrated special.
