Richard Rohr - Living in Deep Time (On Being Podcast)
    Credits: On Being Podcast onbeing.org
Richard Rohr is founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His many books include Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, and most recently, Divine Dance.
Men of all ages say Richard Rohr has given them a new way into spiritual depth and religious thought - through his writing and retreats. This conversation with the Franciscan spiritual teacher delves into the expansive scope of his ideas: male formation and what he calls “father hunger”; why contemplation is as magnetic to people now, including millennials, as it’s ever been; and how to set about taking the first half of life - the drive to “successful survival” - all the way to meaning.

I am always so moved and inspired by the teachings of Richard Rohr. I would like to comment, however, that the catchphrase “Follow your bliss” never came across to me as a fleeting and trivial type of bliss. I always took that to mean the deepest part within us where God lives, our God-given passions, the part of us that we came here to express and share with the world.

I agree with you. "Follow your bliss" for me interweaves with allowing God to reveal to me the desires of my heart. Fyb can certainly be a surface, pleasure-seeking, ego-serving mantra, but bliss also comes from leaning into God and allowing God to show me who I really am.

I started catholic without knowledge, became Christian, I have since been asking questions and possible growing. I have open eyes to all wisdom in many religions and have found compassion to be a common denominator. Richard Rohr books and teaching on UA-cam have been so good to my soul. Thanks for posting.

Blue Magic hi...I can really relate to your comment...I was raised Christian but it had no life in it...so i chased the America separation thing
This day was great that day sucks...the pendulum of life swinging in duality...by the grace of the uni-verse I was awakened 10 years ago and drawn to Hinduism, non duality and Gurus....but as I followed my heart, traveled sat with gurus and teachers, and most of all became quite and turned my attention in wards..it was not long that the gospel became alive for me and Jesus not a god on a throne but a living friend pointing the way home which is actually right here and now a mystery...unknowable and yet being....verb ing....thank you for your comment🕉☯️❤️🙏🏼

Great to find him On being. He echoes much of my training yet growing up Roman Catholic has been a real issue. I prefer mysticism and Richard provides this. A ray of hope for me. I will be 72 soon. A woman alone. Plenty to give. How might I receive? I know disorder well. I am ready to share the grace I know. Amen to the incoherence of our culture. The Merton is gorgeous. I know as many wives have known devotion. As a former Buddhist practitioner I knew Christinans who came and sat with us

Finding Self = Finding God; Atman = Brahman. But, I am beginning to think the most valuable thing in life is to join a noble purpose or mission. Serving others and caring for others is not only its own reward but it is also carrying on a mission that was launched in the mists of time and was most famously championed in The West by Jesus.

Some Christians claim that suffering can only end when everyone is a Christian. This then would be the greatest glory that God could pay to Jesus. Of course, this makes everything seem like Rich Man, Poor Man -- with the Devil the king of this world and Jesus the up and coming successor.

Things that bothered us when we were 20 or even 40 or 50 don't mean anything to us anymore. They were ways of directing us towards deep time...
It's very hard for people to heal in an unhealthy society...
We have to succeed at clear headed non-fuzzy thinking. Seek true logic; true wisdom.

It's good - all Father Rohr's teaching is beautifully non-dual and clear. However, Crista spoke as much as he did - if not more. I would prefer the interviewer to be just that rather than actually over-speaking the interviewee.

I just subscribed to this channel because this interview was beautifully done, and Krista (sp?) you are amazing. But Jesus "Exclusive" Savior goes against everything Richard Rohr teaches. The uttermost essence of Christ was inclusivity. He welcomed, tolerated, comforted, healed any and all who came to him. There is no consistency in his teachings and the belief that he would have rejected any person who came to him as a Muslim, or a Buddhist, or a person of any different faith. People find different paths to God, and I say this as a Christian. Please think about that.

I was listening to an explanation of Maslow's psychological ideas. He seemed to recommend that people follow their bliss, but he also said that if we don't, we may find ourselves in crisis, but that could lead to a spiritual rebirth.

@@johnstewart7025 I am surprised that Maslow's theory has not been more widely critiqued. His universal hierarchy of needs idea is very culturally defined and confined. Watch this for an alternative conception. ua-cam.com/video/jJTvd0Yg2hk/v-deo.html

Like Watts, Campbell always was a Monist. Contempletives may have been attracted to Campbell, but ultimately his Monism diverges from Christian contemplation. Like Watts, a long-winded egoist.

God of Heaven and Earth. God is both in deep time and linear time. All and in all. The world is transitioning from the last
vestiges of the Roman Empire and into the kingdom of the ten toes. as in the vision of the gold image in the book of Daniel.
Order and the law are part of cosmic creation of God. The law is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. Christ Jesus is Savior Healer and Deliverer. Suffering comes from sin transgression and the mystery of iniquity and human frailty. The fusion of the incarnation burns these up by the power of Christ on the cross. We do not die to self, we die the death He died which is Life. The church focuses on the cross and the resurrection but leaves out the burial which is the sabbath rest. Death and suffering is swallowed up into victory. Bring Christ into linear time. While being anchored to deep time. The kingdoms of this world are now become the kingdoms of our God and of His Christ.
True about the young being old souls.

Questions: Death is nothingness to me. Death to the ego, for me, feels like nothing true or valuable to believe in. There is nothing left in the world to which I can attach myself and is like my beliefs are senseless and useless. The best I can tell real faith moves beyond any of my beliefs or even trying to convince myself certain beliefs are true. This faith appears to be like the sun, beliefs no longer matter, nor does it matter if I believe in the sun. You appear to have this real faith and this unshakable confidence in the Sun. You appear to have faith in the ego death and death itself. This death to me cannot be defined in the abstract and possibly contemplation is a living faith. Is your faith and a sense of wonder for you, a glowing enchantment, therefore contemplative? What makes the kingdom heaven alive for you? Are you a mystic?
