Mystery Wool Yarn Bundle PERFECT for Vintage Knits & Historybounding // ISO Patterns 🧶🐑

- Today's adventure begins with a mystery yarn bundle, where I knew the fiber content (100% wool) and the brand (Cascades 220), but I had NO idea what colors I'd be getting! I also got a magnificent deal on them, both because of the mystery factor, but also because they were mislabeled - originally labeled as a Superwash, they are NOT, in fact, machine washable. But that's ok, I don't mind hand-washing the occasional sweater!
So what colors did I get, and what will I do with them? Well you'll have to watch the videos to see what colors the skeins were, but regarding what I'll do with them, that is partly up to you! I'm open to all suggestions of patterns (mainly vintage, but I'll consider modern as well), so throw your favorite knitting patterns in the comments, so I can look them up, and use the.... interesting... color combinations included in this mystery yarn bundle to knit them up!

Hey, everyone - watch Shannon's Wartime Knitting video if you haven't already: it's amazing!
Yes! Do it.
It is filmed in such a beautiful place and the filming and editing are great! Very much worth watching even if you're not into knitting that much!
Seconded! It's an awesome video
I think you should make a vintage ski set ,sweater, hat,and mitts, with all the lovely purple 💜 the black and burgundy are perfect together ❤️
Oh man, I only wish I had MORE burgundy!!
that's the colour combination i was going to suggest too!
Engineering knits did a vintage ski ensemble and I think her red was a small accent so you might have enough? Don't know how complicated her pattern was though as beginner knitter myself. Wartime patterns will sort you out - all designed to use up different colours as you know! I have the victory sweater on my make list (free download from the V&A)
I honestly think all of the colours go well together! Especially in more intricate patterns (like Nordic/Icelandic style knits). Small amounts of skeins seem perfect for berets and gloves!
💚🧶🧶💙
I agree! I think all of them would look beautiful together in a fair isle sweater.
My favorite haul was going into the local Goodwill and finding 4 skeins of 220 for $2 a skein in a gorgeous wine color. I knit a Chuck sweater with it and lovingly call it my "8 Buck Chuck".
Oh, that's awesome, and I love the name!!
the warm brown/orange/burgundy are gorgeous together! I'm getting total hobbity vibes from them together
oooh, very true, very true!
So many options for colorwork!! Scandi sweaters are the way to go. Strange brew from Tin Can Knits is kind of a recipe for designing your own. And their Anthology pattern is a recipe for a hat or a cowl.
I think I do actually have one Scandi sweater pattern from fabelknits for a while ago... also love the Strange Brew recommendation!! Thank you!
I like the idea of using all the blues and purples together for an iris inspired springtime sweater
🌸💜💙
Yay, more knitting adjacent content!! Do you watch Retro Claude? Her reviews of vintage knits are so good and entertaining.
I know of Retro Claude and I've watched some of her videos, but not as many of her knitting videos!
@@ShannonMakesher stash busting updates are great. She does some really good multi colour projects to use up even the little bits.
A purple bicycle sweater gets my vote!
Was thinking the same but for the orange :)
Go for the brighter colors - Llamas , paint splatters & dark pink canvas - if you're going to be traveling so it will show up! It's so easy to have your hands full of stuff and leave something behind on a dark bus seat or bench, especially if you're tired or distracted!
Have a great tour!
Thank you!! And honestly, I'll probably use both, so we'll see which one I favor! 🤣
If it was me, I’d choose one colour way of fabric to make my big knitting bag and then use the other set of fabrics to make a few project bags (either the drawstring type or the “Japanese knot”/wristlet type). Project bags are an absolute win when knitting on the go. Can’t wait to see what you choose to do.
🦔💙💚💙💚🦔 (but also, 🦙🎉💕🎉🦙... aka, I'll probably do both!)
That was what I meant.
Black with walnut and the wine.
You could do a vintage vest and skirt, just a skirt would take 10 skeins easily. A vest could take 3. Hat could be one or two.
I am a vicarious knitter, in that I would like to knit one day and it’s fun to watch people who do knit 😅😂 thank you for sharing
lol vicarious knitting... that's so fun!
All of them together could make an outstanding Fair Isle sweater.
Thank you!!
I highly recommend the seamless yoke sweater by Elizabeth Zimmerman; if you don't have a copy of it, her Knitting Workshop is a classic and incredibly informative. Well, any of her books are really. You get the flexibility of working whatever pattern you want in the yoke as long as the math maths.
Seconding getting all the books by Elizabeth Zimmerman you can get your hands on. They teach you critical thinking and problem solving in knitting and are a fun read as well.
Excellent, I shall look into it, and maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas!! Thank you both @curlysammm6387 and @pimmieschoorl !!
Thirded! I just wrote a whole comment on EZ!
Omgosh! What a wonderful yarn haul, Shannon! You could knit up a cute pair of mittens, a scarf and hat set. I didn't hear you mention the yardage on your yarn balls but, with the "hand wash only" nature of said yarn, small makes are easier to keep laundered.
I'm sure anything you make will be gorgeous.
💜✌️🧶
Thank you! And great ideas!
Loved the WW2 videos. I’m very big into knitting. Vintage-wise there are too many options on fun colored knits. Heck you could make the cuffs and collar a different color and then add some accent stitches or mini pompoms in others.
I do love the contrast cuffs and collar option, for sure!
I wish I knew how to knit because I watch so many fun projects being made by people on youtube. Retro Claude made a video recently where she made the cutest vintage winter hat. The hat was adorable and some of your colors would look really cute as one.
Thanks, I'll definitely check that out! Also, it's never to late to learn how to knit - my roommate just taught herself both crochet and knitting in the past year, and she loves it! Heck, I taught myself how to crochet during the pandemic because I wanted to make a beret (and then promptly never crocheted again after that because I don't like the way it looks as much as knitwear)!
Ooh I loved Claude's hat!
I would maybe check out the "stitches in time" series on knitty. Also, sure, you can't make a sweater out of two skeins or yarn, but you can make some lovely mittens or a hat or a cowl. Or, out of three skeins, you won't get a human sweater, but, hey, Cannelle is a very fashionable corgi who needs something classy to wear for the holidays.
omg, a corgi sweater... she'd HATE it (she loves cold and snow and winter), but I think it's amazing! 🤣
Green and blue is my jam for the knitting bag.
It IS a great color combo, to be sure!!
The browns look like nice yarn for doll hair😘
With a few strands of the orange mixed in!😊❤
Surely you'd be looking at a twinset! And i think the walnut and blues/lavender are lovely together.
Love that splatter fabric!
I had to look up what a twinset was, but I don't think I have nearly enough yarn for that 😢
I"m super picky about colours, so I like mystery things when I know what colour scheme it'll be in (purples, blues, winters, autumns etc) but love surprise materials that force me to really think about how I'm going to use them
omg, so the exactly opposite of this bundle... that's so interesting. But also, I would totally buy a mystery bundle like that too!
That yarn is gorgeous; love love love the wine color, so deep and rich (you know, you could always buy more yarn, there's never too much yarn). I vote you make both knitting bags, I have four crochet bags, different projects, the different bags help keep me organized, and I can just grab a bag and go. Oh, I think surprise packages can be a good way to kick us out of our ruts, and get us thinking creatively. Have fun, and thanks for sharing.
That's true, maybe I'll see if they have more of the red wine available... I am generally trying to restrain myself from buying more yarn, but it's true that the wine was my favorite of the package, so maybe I'll just have a little peek back at the website ;-)
About the knitting bags: I'd make both. Soon you discover that we tend a have some (or several) knitting projects going at the same time. And fabric bags get dirty and have to be washed, so it's always useful to have more than one.
True enough, true enough (although, because of UA-cam, I don't have to many projects going at once, because the footage gets too hard to manage)! But fully agree you can never have too many 🤣
Ohh that sweater is so pretty! I’d love to see it in that copper yarn! Also, I love surprise bundles as long as I know that they were selected with care, like yours 😊 The “lavender” and West Point are my favorite colors of the mystery skeins, but I’m a sucker for cool tones. 😅
Ooooh, fun packages! I actually love the poop brown, I'm very much a brown/green kinda person, and it actually works pretty well with some of your other colours. I'm not great at building colourways, but a top tip is to take a black and white pic of your yarns together - you need some variation in the shades of grey if you want your colours to stand out. If they all look the same shade of grey in the pic, they'll lookmore subtle worked together, sometimes even a bit muddy. For vintage knitting patterns, I highly recommend Retro Claude's channel. She's been doing a lot of stash busting for the past year with monthly updates, which has meant lots of interesting multicoloured projects, so perhaps perfect for your haul!
And I'm intrigued by the knitting bag! I'd absolutely go the green route, those hedgies are 😍 and I would love to know which pattern you're going to use because I'm still ruminating over the perfect (for me) knitting project bag.
I admit, the poo brown is actually growing on me more, and there are some lovely combinations that can be made with it, especially in some autumn tones with the reds and oranges! Thanks for the grayscale photo tip, that's quite clever!!
My suggestion for the red wine colour is a French beret. For any of the browns is a men's woollen hat with/without matching scarf. Also very timeless. For the black: you could always make the cuffs or the ribbing of a sweater in black. My mother always liked to use a darker colour for cuffs as they didn't show up the dirt as much. My mother was knitting for her children, obviously. 😁😁😁
I taught myself how to crochet during the pandemic for the sole purpose of making a burgundy beret (and then never crocheted a single thing afterwards)!! Maybe I try my hand at a knit one next ;-)
I love the blue and green colour scheme for your project bag.
🦔💙💚💙💚🦔 !!
Go with your color pallet with what's left, make an afgan -couch throw for cold Canadian nights.😊
Cascade 220 felts beautifully, and if you knit stripes in strongly contrasting colors, they would soften and blend. You could knit, then felt things like bags, mittens, slippers, coasters. There are 15 pages of felted/fulled projects in Ravelry's Cascade 220 page. The process of fulling is magical. I've done it both by machine and hand.
Thank you 🥰🥰
I am totally into the pink llama variation. Just too cute.
I find hats, fingerless gloves, and socks are my go-to patterns for single skeins. You can also search for patterns that use specific yardage on ravelry!
I have Renaud's so I definitely need fingers on my gloves, but the hats and the socks are great ideas! Or I'll just combine skeins for larger projects, and make fun color combinations!
With all that purple you could make a matching scarf and hat and mittens for a sweater! Also - if you added some purple into the orange and black halloween sweater idea it would be super fun.
Glad someone else thinks of purple as a Halloween color... my roommate thought I was nuts for considering purple fabric as part of my Halloween dress 🤣
Anoka, Minnesota, considers the city as the Halloween Capital of the world. Black, orange, purple, silver or white spider webs, gold or brass accents. Design has a Lot to do with spooky vibes. Also, adding aging to the fabrics. I just thought of a zombie in a three piece pinstripe suit with an attaché case with miscellaneous body fragments hanging out of it. Still Halloween!
I am only a year into knitting myself, a crocheter for years and the past few years have loved loom knitting too. Fibre arts are so wonderful and so rewarding. Your Wartime videos did help push me to focus and really work to add to my skillset so thank you :). That said, for those beautiful single skeins the pattern I am working on now is a knit-convertible 4 way wrap (Yarnspirations), and could work great for blending those. It may not be a vintage pattern, but it could work well with your vintage pieces. Happy Knitting and travels! Looking forward to the upcoming videos!
Thank you so much both for your suggestions and for your lovely bit about how my videos influcence your own crafting... it's rare that I get to see that perspective (it can sometimes feel like I'm putting videos out into a void), so thank you!
The reddish with the llamas my granddaughter would die for.
🦙💖🎉💖🦙
Personal I would need 2 knitting bags! 😅 The ADHD and constant project inspo hits hard! I can't tell you how many WIPs and UFOs I have laying around for crochet, weaving, and sewing!
I prefer to keep my UFOs quite limited, both for my sanity and for the fact that I have one room in a shared apartment that is both my bedroom and craft room, so I can't really let projects pile up... that being said, I can always use more bags, so I think for sure I'll end up making both!
For a Halloween knit, that orange & black would make a fabulous Arachne sweater by Andi Satterlund. I’m knitting it right now. Like you, I’ve usually just knit projects like scarves. This is my first adult sweater & since it’s knit top-down, it’s quite easy.
I did end up just integrating the ribbed neckband into the top (pattern says to pickup knit it at the end.) I also had to draw my own chart of the spiderweb pattern because my brain couldn’t keep track of the color work, lol.
omg, I just Googled it, and that is stinking CUUUTE!!! Wow, love that! 😍
@@ShannonMakes Sadly the pattern is no longer available. Andi closed her shop some time ago (last fall maybe? I don't remember for sure). Engineering Knits here on UA-cam found a similar looking vintage pattern and has a video about it, worth a look.
I think, hands down, knitting bag 2 is the option I would choose! Although, I might actually switch the green plain fabric for the dark pink... Would have to look at it a bit closer though tbf. I do love foresty greens and I'm also not so much into pink, but darker shades like wine tones are gorgeous!
You have some lovely colors to work with. Colorwork sweaters always need a color pop. Hat, cowl and mitten set would help use up the 1 and 2 skein colors. Have you heard of Ravelry? It's an online source of all kinds of knitting and crochet patterns and it can really help you narrow down your options by yarn weight, multi color, type of garment and whether it's free or paid. It's a huge library and will give you ideas you didn't even think about. You can also search by what other folks have knit with Cascade 220. And that yarn is fabulous for beginners. Have fun choosing!
Yes, I have definitely heard of Ravelry, and have looked it over, but I also find that there are SO many choices that sometimes its a bit overwhelming, and I love personal recommendations!
I haven't ever ordered from Little Knits, but I remember looking at the website when they all these Cascade yarns on sale! You should find a beautiful vintage color work sweater to use these.
Thank you, and yes, colorwork would be lovely!
One of the ways I incorporate small bits of different colored yarn in larger projects, is I will use them as an accent stripe, or contrasting trim. I think the black and red would be dramatic together, maybe as a vest? Argyle is another interesting way to use a variety of colors.
Yea, I think I'll definitely have to do something like that - collars and cuffs maybe also as an accent in a different color!
Knitting bag - I prefer the blue/green option... but think you should definitely make both! I always have more than one craft project on the go so find lots of bags to be very handy.
Definitely both!! Can never have too many bags :-D
I love surprise bundles! It's like Christmas every day!
such a good way to describe it!
Hi Shannon, wow what a beautiful wool you have there! You could make beautiful Icelandic sweaters with them!! Maybe not your usual style, but it will be very warm in your cold winters and fun to make.
I'll look those up!
I'd use the "odd guy out" colors and make hats, earwarmer headbands, or scarves - great way to learn new stitches!! There are some great scarf patterns that use multiple kinds of stitches... Love both sets of fabric, but I would go with the William Morris print!
oooh the Morris print for the bag WOULD be a stunning project bag, to be sure!! ...oh the ideas!
Ooooo that orange, wine, spicy brown combo is my favorite!
it IS very cozy hobbitsy!!
I love surprises and am always up for a challenge to figure out what to do with stuff I wasn't expecting, even if it takes me a few years (or decades) to get there sometimes.
A great attitude!
I am so jealous. Cascade 220 is my favorite yarn as well and I’m currently knitting a cabled vest out of the wine heather color. Try a two color colorwork project with some of them. It’s not too difficult really. Anyway, hurray for you. Great catch.😊
Yea, I'll definitely have to dive into colorwork sometime soon here... looks so pretty!!
@@ShannonMakesif you get into colour work, I'd suggest trying to learn to knit continental, I did that when starting stranded projects and was able to use my right hand for one colour & left for another, really helped speed up my knitting but also really helped with the tension issues I would always get doing stranded work
Wow I typed up a huge comment and it didn't seem to post? Whoops. I love knitting though! And I almost bought this same deal but my stash is so huge I couldn't justify it. For the knitting bag, I would make both. I tend to have multiple projects going at once that I alternate by my mood and focus level, so they would certainly come in handy. For the knitting itself, I have several people's patterns for you to check out. My go-to, especially for smaller quantities of worsted weight yarn, is Andi Satterlund patterns. Sadly, I don't know if you can get a lot of the patterns anymore because she closed her shop. Her designs are 50s style, so cropped to the natural waist and fitted, and I've made some with 650 yards before, which is crazy. Her patterns are very well written and great for beginners. I also highly recommend Squid's School of Vintage Knitting on Patreon. All of her designs are from vintage patterns but she has developed a system to make them completely size inclusive. They take a bit of up front measuring and math, but they are great and you can even adjust them for the type of yarn you are using since the patterns are based off your own gauge. I also recommend The Long Haired Flapper on UA-cam (she is PurlsofthePast on Ravelry) because she has a knack for finding true vintage patterns that use limited amounts of thicker yarn (most vintage sweaters are for sock weight yarn) and she posts the links to get the patterns free online in her Ravelry. Ravelry itself is also a great place to hunt. I also love Susan Crawford's designs, but she sells most of them together in books and they are quite pricey. Beautiful vintage designs converted to multiple sizes though. Anyway, I love knitting, lol. The trick for using the mystery bundle will just be having that Make Do mindset and adding stripes or color blocking where the pattern doesn't clearly tell you to. I find things with lacy stripes are good for this because you can do the lace sections in one color and the solid sections in another. Hopefully this helps!
Wow, so many good ideas and resources to add to my list, thank you!! And fully agree about the Make Do mindset and being flexible with the pattern (which is something I feel pretty comfortable doing)!
Greens and blues for sure for the knitting bag, really looking forward to seeing you making that. You could make a fairisle tank top (sweater vest) with lots of the different colours of the lovely yarn, they are quite vintage 😊
I'm excited about this knitting bag make. I love a knitting bag with good pockets! I'm on team llama.
TEAM LLAMA!! 🦙💖🎉
What a fabulous and fun yarn haul! I loved your WW2 knitting videos and have just completed my own cabled sweater vest of the same pattern. Your video helped tons. You got some gorgeous colors here and I am so excited for more knitting on the channel. I sew as well but I find myself knitting more these days because it is more portable and easy to do anywhere like you said. Have fun!
Thank you! I'm so glad you made one of your own, that's fantastic!! And definitely more portable!
The "poo brown" yarn would go pretty well with the oranges and reds for an autumnal palette. My go-to for lonely skeins of yarn is hats or handwarmers (fingerless mittens.)
The Delancey Cardigan by Alexis Winslow might be a good option for incorporating smaller amounts with stripes.
I recently found the Cobweb Sweater by Megan-Anne Llama and I think I need it for next Halloween.
The Flax sweater by Tin Can Knits is a wonderful, easy-knit pullover with plenty of opportunity for customization. I've made it and I highly recommend it! Tin Can Knits is known for good, solid designs.
I prefer the blue colour scheme.
Yea, the autumnal colorway could be gorgeous, lots of people are a fan of that! I'll definitely look up those patterns (I think someone else mentioned Tin Can Knits)!
i love mystery/surprise packages! in the past i have subscribed to a few monthly mystery boxes and i loved them! they're so much fun in my opinion! also, FYI, Little Knits still has mystery packs of this yarn for sale on their site...i just bought one 😁
So fun, such an adventurous knitter! And yes, I saw that they have the mystery packs still, although it looks like they're the REAL superwash, and the price point is a bit higher than what I paid... still a fun bundle though!
I am making art cloth dolls with horns. Those colors are perfect for hair.
Hedgehogs all the way! So excited for more knitting content, your knitting history video was my favorite thing!
🦔🦔🦔 Thank you!
I say make both knitting bags, one can never have too many bags! For pattern suggestions if you do want an oversize sweater that will use most if not all of the purple I'd go for Cassis by Baby Cocktails (Thea Colman). It's a long cushy cardigan with a huge collar, an absolutely perfect choice for wrapping up in during a cold and damp Montreal winter. I second the recommendation for Fortesse by Tasha Moss if you are looking for something more vintage inspired. It uses less yarn than you might expect and Tasha's instructions are really clear! I very much enjoyed this unboxing, but I don't think I'd go for this type of Mystery Box as I'm picky about colour.
Definitely will make both bags, they're too cute not to, and you're right, one can never have too many!!
I think you'll be surprised how many sweaters you could make with these. You're small enough, that 4 skeins might be exactly enough depending on how fitted you make it.
I think if you go with the halloween option, you could throw one of those purples in it too!! You literally could use any basic sweater pattern and work in stripes. Also I love the idea of using that pumpkin spice just for the collar, hem, and cuffs of the orange sweater. There are just so many options!!!!
Yes, people have been giving some great Halloween sweater pattern ideas, and I love them all!!!! ....now I want it to be Halloween again 🤣
For the yarn, girl , stripes with fingerless gloves. Have great fun and always make memories!!
Thank you! The only problem is that I have Reynaud's syndrome, so I definitely need fingers on my gloves! They can still have stripes tho ;-)
ah, the magic of colours and subjectivity. it's fun seeing you excited about colourways I wouldn't know what to do with and mildly disappointed with the colours I'd definitely go for. 😄
HAHAH omg, that's so true... colors are so subjective 🤣🤣
I applaud all knitters. I learned to knit as a kid in the 50's-60's, but still I cannot knit without dropping stitches, and when I pick them up it looks horrible. Too much anxiety, so nope. On the flip side, I do love watching the knitting feats of ARNE & CARLOS.
Thank you! I do a lot of recycling, upcycling, pulling junk off the street and using it in my projects - so much so that I have an entire playlist on it that I'd really recommend if you like that aspect of this project!
For the knitting bag: you really can't go wrong! You set yourself up for a great success either way!
Me personally, I like the cats and the hedgehog combo, but I think the llamas and pink are probably too cute to pass up and you should do that!
Yea, I will probably end up doing both 🤣
I'm totally into hedgehog print/bag. Colors I like + won't show dirt! Ciao.
Knitting bag - I like the llamas 🦙, but I'm ❤ loving ❤ the blue and green with cats 🐈 and hedgehogs🦔.
They’re both excellent choices, right?! 🦔🦙
What an amazing find of yarn!! Very nice!!
I would definitely sew both set of bags. They always come in handy!! Greetings from Belgium
Thank you! And 100% agree on the bags, I will probably do both and enjoy them equally!
Crochet or knit yourself a beautiful blanket (in many colors. Both are nice; but, I like the first choice the best.
Oooh rust hood & scarf combo with pockets on the ends.
Do love the hood-and-scarf combos, although I've never found The Perfect Pattern™
@@ShannonMakes hmmmm mix and match to make your own? I do that with sewing patterns but don’t knit sooooo…
I'd make 2 knitting bags. I have it on good authority that
Funfetti by Sylvia Watts-Cherry is an easy slip-stich sweater that uses more than one color.
I'll love to see your knitting episodes!
Yes, I almost definitely WILL make a couple knitting bags - they're so fun!! And wow, Funfetti is aptly named (having just looked it up)!!
I think the combination of the wine, jet and West point would be nice together. Simple, maybe even basic, but still lovely.
Also, I would probably make both knitting bags. After all, a bag is a bag, and if you don't have a knitting project in it, you still have a useful bag for clothes, groceries or whatever else you may need a bag for.
Well, it'd be a fairly specific bag, but it's SO true that one can never have too many project bags, right?!?
I’m very strongly drawn to the foresty knitting tote. i love the theme and colors. BTW i was glued (for the second time) to your previous dive into wartime knitting. great work, Shannon!
Aww, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it (for a second time)!!
I absolutely loved the wartime video ! ❤
Thank you so much!!!
If you have any vintage scandi patterns, the smaller quantities would do well in those.
The red wine one would probably work with the West Point blue. Not a combination that instantly springs to mind, but it can work well.
Thank you! And I did pair the red one with the West Point blue for one of my options!
So pretty! Your gonna love working with those 😍
I sure hope so!
I personally like knowing what I'm buying, just gives me more planning ability. That being said, with the amount of leftovers I have, it tends to become like a mystery pack when i make a leftover project lol
LOL I kinda love that description of what is, I suspect, the reality for most of us!
I like the forest option. Cant wait to see what pattern you are going to use for the bag.
🦔💙💚💙🦔 Oh, I'll just make something up for sure - the design is pretty simple!
I used up my leftover Cascade by making hats & scarves in 1-2-3 stripe combinations, so 1 stripe of what I had the least of, 2 of the mid, etc. It worked out really well & led to being able to combine colours in an interesting way, 1 stripe of the harder to use colours helps to make them work
Nice, that's a great idea for once I have leftovers!!
I would go with the blue green knit bag.
For the yarn - leg warmers - dogo sweater - fingerless gloves - socks - Christmas stocking
Thank you!
Try not to get too bogged down with sweaters. I love buying mystery packs because I can knit a tuque in three days if I'm determined- not to mention a headband in a day- and I constantly forget about birthdays. Tin Can Knit's Barley and the CC Beanie are two of my favourites. They're always a hit for gifts because even if someone isn't a big knit hat person there's at least one cold day where you become their absolute saviour.
I actually prefer larger projects that I’ll use over smaller projects that I won’t use as much, or that I’ll give away… it’s like reading books - I’d rather start a long series because then I don’t have to worry about making decisions about the next book to read for a long time! 🤣🤣 if I start a big sweater, it’ll keep me busy for longer and I don’t have to constantly search for a new pattern!!
Mystery, yes
The hedgehogs are everything! ❤❤❤❤
🦔🦔🦔!!
Llamas and wool yarn go great together.
very, very true!
Shannon - firstly, LOVE all of your videos!! With regard to the "choice" for your knitting bag project ... why choose?!?! Make BOTH!! LOL
Do you crochet, as well as knit? If not, why not?!?! One bag for knitting - one bag for crochet!! PERFECT.
As to suggestions for the various colour-ways. If you want to go stripey, then you could knit, or crochet, one (or more) striped ponchos ... one in "autumn" tones, one in "sky" tones.
For me, the best way to utilise "single skein" finds (or should I say "small # of skein" finds), is to make crocheted Granny Squares, and then make the into whatever you like - blankets, vests, slippers ... with Granny Squares, the possibilities are endless!!!
Yes, I will almost certainly make both!! I do technically crochet, as in I taught myself how by making a beret, but I don't like the look of crochet-wear as compared to knit-wear, so I made the beret and then never crocheted again 🤣
Hi, @@ShannonMakes, if you want to try a knitted Poncho, I can probably work-up a basic pattern for you!! Let me know if you want me to do that - I'm talking a "Mexican" style square poncho (NOT a 70's style "triangular" one!! LOL).
That's very sweet, but I don't think I'd get much use out of a poncho... I greatly appreciate the offer though 🫶 🥰
The red yarn is my favourite from the bunch. I wouldn't worry too much right now about what to knit with those single balls. I would save them in a "colourwork" library. Since you love vintage knitting, you definitely will do colourwork at some point. Then you have the right colours for when you find the perfect pattern.
That’s such a good point (although I might do color work next)… I don’t have much space (in a modest apartment shared with 3 other ppl) to start a big collection, but you’re right that I shouldn’t feel like I need to use all of them immediately! ☺️☺️
I'm a crocheter and very much not a monogamous one. So my opinion on project bags is always: All of them! Large ones with all the pockets for storage at home and larger projects, small ones for on-the-go, medium ones for your average sweater... It's almost impossible to have too many project bags, but I have yet to have enough of them. And when you find cute fabrics in perfect combinations, you should definitely make use of them.
I think you're absolutely right, and I probably WILL end up making both of them!!
Cascade 220, it's an incredibly enjoyable experience to knit with.
Yes, fully agree!!
Greens and blues for the knitting bag. Love that combo.
I want to make a wheelchair bag(s) now. Have several bags that are supposed to be for knitting but make good wheelchair bags. But they are not quite right. Need something big enough for the 12 inch laptop, gloves, meds, purse, phone etc. Small enough to not rub on the wheels and that I can hang from the armrests. I feel some designing coming on.
When I looked at the yarn I was thinking of the different ways to weave it. Love the copper, purple, pumpkin spice and wine red colours. So many ideas. I'm going to go through my yarn stash and see what I can find :)
Oh, that wheelchair bag sounds like a fantastic design puzzle.... I love those kind of super specific creative challenges (it's why I started sewing in the first place, and why I hyper-over-customize so many of my things)! I hope you enjoy your design process and the final results of it!
Definitely try some fair isle knitting. It doesn’t have to be massively complicated and then all the colours would look great together. Some patterns you only use 2 colours per row but it can end up looking amazing as those colours change over the course of the pattern 😊
Great idea! Thank you!! ♥️💙
Wow. lots of beautiful color, My favorite is the orange and spicy brown. Have fun.
Thank you 🤗
I would knit a bear plushie with the brown skeins! 🤩🐻
Awww, that'd be cute!! Not quite what I enjoy knitting, but I can see it being adorable!
Love the greens.
I'm SO EXCITED! I've been following your sewing, but I was drawn to your channel by the WWII knitting videos!
Since you are Canadian, maybe you would be interested in exploring some Cowichan knitting history and motifs? The colors you have wouldn't be traditional for Cowichan knitting, but I think you could use the motifs to make some beautiful pieces.
On the opposite side of your country, the knitting traditions in Newfoundland could be very interesting as well. In particular, there's a very unique emphasis on colorwork mittens and gloves. I've heard good things about the Saltwater books, and Fruity Knitting put out some great content about the history.
If you're leaning towards more modern pieces, I'd suggest looking into some of the mosaic colorwork sweater options. In my opinion, that's the easiest colorwork to start with since you won't have to hold 2 or more strands at the same time. Andrea Mowry uses mosaic colorwork in quite a few of her design lines.
Edit: I forgot to suggest Engineering Knits and Retro Claude as some other UA-camrs to check out! They seem very willing to help each other out and maybe could help you out if you're searching for vintage patterns in particular.
Very helpful tips, thanks so much!!
I like the burgundy and walnut together!
Yea, it is kinda nice... only 3 balls of it, so a smaller combo like hat and mittens or something!
I've never been able to get the hang of knitting, so I find it odd that you call yourself a beginner! You made sweater with cables! Not my estimation of a beginner! And even through I'm not a knitter, I loved both of your WWII knitting videos. And I'm looking forward to seeing what you make with those lovely yarns!
I mean, I've futzed around with the knitting stitch before, but never made anything out of it really, except a hat and then that WWII vest! I guess, like most "levels" it's subjective! And thank you!
I recommend searching for the Fairywoods sweater by Tania Barley. Has some lovely colorwork even if it's not a vintage knit.
Thank you, I'll look it up for sure!
I’m thinking fair isle sweater and hat set with the three shades of purple. Also, greens and hedgehogs for the win!
A nice ombre sweater would be fun, for sure! 🦔💚💙💚🦔
Fun! Looking forward to seeing what you end up making with these. The vintage-inspired Betty & Judy Lodge Sweater by Poison Grrls uses worsted weight yarn like Cascade 220 and although the original pattern is Christmas themed, it’s infinitely customizable. I could see a pumpkin-colour version with little bats in place of the holly motif in the original!
Thank you, I'll definitely check it out! Would love some cute little bats!
I like the pink, but prefer the cats and hedgehogs to the llamas. It'll be easier to keep the darker clean, so that makes up my mind. I am sure either will look geat.
I'm not a knitter, but with fewer skiens, maybe look at things like a knit corset, or t-shirt, or cowl or vest. Something for layering
Hate pink, 😹😹won’t wear it or use it, but the second fabric choice yummy, those colours and fabric choices I can really get into.
I love all of the wool colours specially as you have bulk of two major colours, the others could be used in “Fair Isle” design rather than strips (yuck) but doing flowers or something along those lines using the two major colours as the flowers would work well. Unfortunately have no idea of patterns to use as not knitted in over 20 years now. I have CTS in both wrists, I can do crotchet and/or Tunisian crochet/knitting both are not stressful on my hands. But Tunisian takes more yarn than either plain knitting or crotchet does so that option would be off the table with the amounts of yarn that you do have. Tunisian is fantastic for making winter items because it comes out thicker than the normal knitting/crotchet hence the reason that it uses almost double the amount of yarn. Plus I’m still trying to find any patterns for outfits. The ones I have made are my own designs in the end.
Looking forward to seeing what others come up with for you🤗🤗🤗
Burgandy/Orange/Pumpkin spice. The Westpoint probably would go well with the ashy brown. Both are cooler-toned.
