- Watch me wear fine things well, as I spend a couple days making the infamous Birds of Paradise or "Break-Up" robe from Our Flag Means Death!
Next week I'll have a step-by-step tutorial on how to make one of your own, if you're looking for more detailed instructions and/or a helping hand in the construction process, but for now, just enjoy some jaunty nautical tunes, inside references to our favorite show, and a fun reveal!

Name ONE book that Stede FOR SURE has in his pirate library (and let's not bother with anachronisms... any book, any era)
"Beautiful Ducks" by Liz Wright
The entire wistful melancholy works of Hans Christian Andersen for sure.
Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne du Maurier
The Grimms Fairy tale in the original language
@OPAARTIST but can he read it, or does he just stare lovingly at it?
Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the depression robe, but I just want people making the 'you wear fine things well' purple suit, I mean that jacket with the gold embroidery 😩💕
oyyyy, that's an absolutely gorgeous suit (and also far beyond the scope of what I can get done anytime soon XD)
Shannon! Your robe is fabulous! Appreciate your attention to detail and the fearless way you dove right in.
Your robe fabric perfectly fit the mood of the original, as far as I'm concerned. It's fantastic!
Wow, what a great way to put it...that just brightened my day a bit! Thanks so much for watching and commenting
The hardwood floor to lay the large piece of fabric out on to cut is priceless. It's also something I struggled with. Realized the Cali king bed we have because the BF is super tall was my largest possible open space. Spreading fabric out over a sheets was a fail. Nothing moves well, and I sliced the fitted sheet. Further contemplating in the fabric dept at Walmart, I noticed their stand of cut to length plastic table cloth. I picked the thickest clear option available. Made a long cardboard tube held together by an entire role of packing tape. So when the bed is needed, I just roll everything up and lean it against the wall in a corner. Everything stays in place, just like I left it to continue later. Took some time, but it works.
VERY clever!!
You are very talented and your films are a joy to watch.
We finished watching the series just two days after the previous video, and good grief did it just get better and better... As did this project, as per usual, a marvellous result.
Aww, why thank you! And hooray for OFMD, let’s cross our fingers for season 2!
I LOVE this robe on you!❤
I need a house robe. The idea of coming home from work & shrugging off the uniform inside the door to immediate put on something pretty and comfortable...Yes. I absolutely need to do this. This is a gorgeous robe & I can't wait for your tutorial. 💜💜
oh yessss, this sounds amazing! I've only used mine in the morning so far (mainly because when I get home from work, it's after midnight and I just dive STRAIGHT into bed XD), but that sounds just so lovely, and having seen your fabric, I agree that it'd be PERFECT for this robe!!!
@@ShannonMakes It has been decided! I shall also wear fine things well. 😂
Beautiful, well done! And you juggle!!! Fantastique!
Yes, of course I juggle!! 🤣
I love how it turned out! It looks really comfortable. Gotta love the pockets & tassels too.
Thank you! Although full disclosure, the tassels get in the way for anything practical like washing dishes or working on the computer, so eventually I took mine off of the sleeves!
Oh Miss Shannon, I love love love that fabric! It's such a rich vibrant color and how wonderful to already have fabrics and trim in your stash that match it so perfectly. The robe turned out beautifully. It was nice of Cannell to help you with it, she is such a good girl. Looking forward to the more in depth video next week.
Thank you so much for the lovely words, I'm equally happy with the colors and how they turned out! Cannelle is the bestest Good Girl and gets extra head scritches ;-)
That robe is absolutely beautiful.
Girl, You are Awesome! Great minds think alike! Currently, real life sucks. I've been taking care of my Grandma, 97, and she finally lost that last marble. Now the hard part of cleaning out her house. My mom and uncle can't be bothered. They couldn't be bothered with their own mother, that's why I was there for her. Cleaning out her house is heartbreaking, but I can totally repurpose stuff I come across like linen table clothes and lace curtains. Found 2 blankets, actually not sure what they are because they are not comforters. Like maybe a top decorative blanket that you tuck pillows into. Anyways, I saw them dyed and made into cloaks, ones that would fit into Game of Throwns. My motto is recycle, repurpose, and reuse. So that's where I'm at. Survival might be hard after this, but I shall have productive projects that require no money spent. Or hardly any money spent. Also, salvaging all zippers and hardware from purses and such.
I'm so sorry for your loss, and wish you strength and energy to wrap up her affairs. Glad that you're able to save some of her things to reuse them and repurpose them
@ShannonMakes thank you for the well wishes. And for your time reading my comments. I will totally be watching all of your videos to learn more about sewing form you! Thank you for being you and being here to share it with us! ❤️
you're very welcome!@@MarieWest-tbic
Oh my goodness that eye cutting shot 😂
LOL I'm glad somebody liked it! Filmed on a (silly) whim ;-)
I love the look you dog gave when on its fanting couch.(when can we play?)
That is *exactly* the look she’s giving me!! 🤣🤣
This is gorgeous. The costumes are one of my fave things about the show, and Rhys Darby in particular gets to wear some pretty snazzy numbers (I really want the sky blue outfit he wears when he first goes to sea, and the fancy frock coat he wears to the party).
Thank you! And yes, he has some amazing outfits - I, too, love the whole blue/teal outfit, and would love to make myself a frock coat one day, so maybe season 2 will have one I can dupe!!
I honestly do not know the show but the robe is marvelous! And I just had to giggle over the Cordi-socks. So cute, too.
Thank you!!
Thanks for the tutorial, I haven’t been able find a good one that’s screen accurate and this is perfect! Just bought my fabric and I’m so excited to get sewing!
So glad I could help! I was striving for Screen Accurate construction (as much as could be gleaned from the show and the internet, anyways), and was a bit worried that people would be put off by the lack of SA fabric... so I'm glad that you found it useful
LMAO when I heard it called the "breakup robe". That's precisely why I should make one of these. Since my former partner and I ended our intimacy, and became amicable roommates, dealing with the heat by wandering around the apt nude, or nearly nude, just doesn't feel quite right. Yup. A light cotton, or linen... oooooh... linen... Robe might be the solution!
A quick and easy project with an apt name! 😂
Such a lovely robe! and the inside color is a perfect match.
oh thank you! I was SO happy to find it and actually be able to use it, because I distinctly remember almost NOT grabbing it because I don't usually wear that shade of purple... but I figured it could be used as a mock-up fabric, worst case, and I'd say this is definitely BEST case!
oh this has turned out so well! And yay for making it out of the cotton, kinda means you will get months of wear out of it now instead of a heavier weight meaning its not used much until its colder again. And as always love the #corgicontent
To be fair, I usually winter in Minnesota or Montreal, so that’s a solid 5 months of cold a$$ winter weather, but it was so nice to work with the cotton, and it filled a nice hole in my wardrobe!
@@ShannonMakes yeah but hobbit robe!
This robe is beautiful! Love your choice of fabric. The blue piping is absolutely perfect. I would have skipped the white ruffle lace at the cuff but that’s a personal preference. I love that much of your stash is salvaged from dumpsters, curbside and thrift stores.
Thanks! The white ruffle is actually part of the shirt underneath, and it’s specifically to match the cosplay of the character who wears this robe (because agreed, I also wouldn’t normally go for white ruffled lace )
That looks amazing! I have not-yet-watched the show. I’m a busy lady okay, and I don’t watch much tv, but even with limited context I think you did a wonderful job. You make the whole thing both adorably nerdy and perfectly approachable. Wishing you many days with your fine things, thank you for sharing ❤
I totally understand, I'm generally quite behind on anything pop culture, especially really good shows, because those are the ones that I want to sit down and actually WATCH instead of having on in the background while I make stuff 😭🤣 But I made an exception for this one, because I heard such marvelous things about it, and it was well worth it!!
New subscriber - enjoying watching your videos. You have a really engaging personality. The presser foot clip brings to mind a ship sailing. I love making tassels and you just showed me a wonderful way to do one. The overhead of the robe on the floor - just realized it’s a lounge kimono (not formal)
Thank you!
YES IVE BEEN SO EXCITED FOR THIS VID!!!
I’M SO EXCITED THAT YOU HAVE IT!
You’ve done a beautiful job.
Thank you! 😊
I needed more dramatic pirate themed sewing montages in my life so thank you
You are oh so very welcome (and hey, let's just call it a warm up for 1890s Dread Pirate Roberts ;-) )
I love this project so much! You are an inspiration! 😍🦜🏴☠️
And you are so incredibly supportive, you're amazing! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Oh that looks lovely! You did an amazing job!! I love it and will have to add it to the list of things to make!
Thanks so much! 😊 And it's such a quick make, it could easily be whipped up in a day or two for a Quick Win!!
Cool 😃
Beautiful
Thank you!! 🏴☠️
Amazing!!
Thank you! Cheers!
My fabric will be here soon! Thank you so much!
Oooooh, that's so exciting!! Did you get the pink velvet, or another alternative? (and you are so welcome, thanks for watching
All hail the sacrificial towel 🙌
Excellent. 👌💕
Thank you! Cheers!
I think I need a new robe!!! 😍 Love the colours you used!
And getting up at 4.30 to do the reveal was so worth it! 🤩
Yes, definitely this is a great addition to any wardrobe! And SO worth the early morning wake-up! Thank you
I love the pirate music!
thank you, it was so much fun to edit to!
pirate-y * rrrugh *
Haha, thank you for the awesome captions :)
With extreme pleasure!
❤ it ... Even though I have no idea what the show was. 🤷♀️😄
Definitely worth a watch, at least try out the first episode!
I'm just really happy that we all know that robe as the depression robe XDD I do wanna try making it !!!!!!
you absolutely should!! It's a great beginner garment if you're new to sewing, and if you're already comfortable with sewing then it'll go together fast for a quick win!
omg bless youtube for reccomending this to me!! I love it!! And honestly my memory is not good enough to remember the exact color of the robe, I would not have noticed the difference!
You are very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And even better if you didn't notice the color difference XD
This is so satisfying, I’m so excited for my fabric to come in so I can make mine!
Thank you! I'm excited for your fabric to come in too!! Did you get the pink velvet, or an alternative?
@@ShannonMakes I got the OG pink velvet from India (at least I hope it is lmaooo)!
ooooh so fun! A part of me definitely wishes I liked/looked good in pink velvet so that I could the OG version!
Enjoying watching the show now it's finally out in the UK. I love the collar and sleeve details - did not notice them when watching. This might have to go on my project list - my current summer dressing gown is falling apart.
Oooh, glad to hear it finally is available in the UK! And definitely this is a very simple make that could easily be done in a weekend if you have a few chunks of time to dedicate to it!
The pink original looks good but I've really come to prefer the red. The robe ending up looking amazing
I freaking love the red (even though it's not normally my color) and I really think it's in part because I adore the deep blue and purple of the design on it, and I like how the piping and lining was able to pick up on that
I love your fabric, even if it is red...or perhaps because it is pink. Well and your video series certainly made me start my own, even if I have not watched the series yet. You are convincing!
Miko sends a woof to Canelle.
I'm so glad you did it... this way, if you ever have the opportunity to watch the show, you'll already be outfitted for it!! (and WOOF back :-D )
Wow Shannon! Is there anything you CAN'T do? This looks amazing and I want to make one now. 😱
Thank you 😊😊 I absolutely recommend you make one! They're a pretty quick make, if you're ever in the mood for a short project, plus it's SUPER COMFY!!
Have not seen the show but the robe looks awesome and the video was so well shot and edited as always! I saw a person cycling with their corgi in a basket today and immediately had to think of you and your cute friend :)
Thank you!! Aww, we used to have a basket on the front handlebars for Cannelle (because I wanted to be able to keep an eye on her), but only when she was a little 🥜, and now she's FAR too big for that, so definitely have to stick to the backpack (which works really well, and she loves it)!!
I just got an add for a courier called "PirateShip" , all is right in the world. 😂
Amazing!! 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
So cute ❤
So funny you commented on this today, I literally just pulled it out and wore it for the first time this season (unusually cold/long spring this year 🥲)
I heart these videos!
Any tips for those patch pockets I spy in your lining?
Glad you’re enjoying them! Please stick around and check out some of my other ones too!
For the pockets, I just measured out a rectangle big enough to comfortably fit my phone/some snacks, and cut 2 out of the red, 2 out of the purple, sewed them together right sides together, leaving a little hole to turn them right-side-out through, then top stitched them on through the purple layer only!
I just finished your video and now im stressed but i appreciate all your help
oh no... that was literally the opposite intention of the video!
What a great robe!
Thank you!! I was just joking the other day that I could change my channel name to Shannon Makes Robe and it wouldn't even be wrong 🤣
@@ShannonMakes Maybe 😄. But what’s stuck in my mind, from the videos I’ve seen, is the scenes of Montreal as you went on the hunt for pieces for the work the sewing cabinet. I’d like to see more of Montreal or wherever you happen to be. It establishes a wonderful context. Also the making of the fainting couch. You working out before a performance in the theater was really interesting. Also, I was wondering if you might make shorter videos, 5, 10, 15 minutes. I love the longer videos, but shorter ones would be great too. That way we get to see more of what you do more often.
That piping really upped the ante!
Thank you!!
Oh this is great! At least now I know I didn't need to do some of the steps with my mock-up so complicated when I could have made is easier like you :D My biggest worry is getting the piping to that perfect 1/8th thickness!
🥰🥰 If you measure and sew carefully, it’s really easy - keep a consistent seam allowance and iron your piping before, and then it’ll be a beautiful and clean 1/8”!!
Can't wait for next week's video! I have my fabric cut out and ready to go!
Oh goodness, that's so exciting!! Did you get the pink velvet?
@@ShannonMakes I did!
oooh amazing!! It's gonna be SO PURTY!
Aaah it looks great! Love the red vs the pink, too, but I'm biased. Smart to make it out of cotton. My fear wearing silk robes is I'm gonna end up spilling something on it and ruin it!
so I had it made, but the reveal wasn't filmed, and I ~wisely~ wouldn't allow myself to wear it until it WAS, because sure enough, the first morning when I did wear it, I spilled on it (fortunately just hot water, but that water was about to become coffee, and that woulda been unfortunate)!!
@@ShannonMakes HAH! 🤣 This is me and every new item of clothing. Carry a Tide pen in my purse specifically to remove errant coffee. Wise decision!
I don’t see, but I love your videos.
This is neat, and your presentation is very informative.
And, I love your colors.
I have a question: did you say the fabric is a cotton voile?
Thank you! And... well, you've seen this video much more recently than me. I made it, threw it on the internet, and yeeted it out of my brain to make room for the next video, so you tell me: did I say it was cotton voile?
@@ShannonMakes You did. While it appeared lightweight it didn't seem as light as a voile - but I love voile and it got me thinking about making this with a very light fabric. Anyway, I thought this was just great. Thank you.
I actually don't know the show but I really enjoyed your video :)
Thank you! I think that’s a good sign that it can stand on its own as entertainment even if you aren’t familiar with the inspiration!
❤
Love it. Where can i get a copy of the pattern.?
the other two videos on my channel about it!
The cat flag of death in the background
Yessss! (and the teacup too ;-) )
I saw on Etsy the fabric you bought. How do you know how many yards one needs?
6:27 ;-)
6:22 best scene
Nope. I lied. 13:26 is best scene
Goofy eyeballs or silly corg-o… let’s put it to a vote!!
I haven't seen the show. I think thr robe has a Japanese flair.
Binge watching your videos at the moment 😉
And what I was wondering... do you have a video of you Llama-Blouse which just had an appearence in this video? Or maybe at least a pattern to start from? The fit looks like it could be something for me, too. If you find the time to answer, it would be highly appreciated!
Anyhow: love watching you channel.
Glad you're enjoying the videos 🥰
I don't *really* have a video on the blouse, but it's my all-time favorite blouse pattern, and I'm happy to share it with you. The only unfortunate thing is that it's not a stand-alone pattern, so it's a bit more expensive because it came *with* the dress pattern that was in the video "Vintage Holiday Sewing" ( ua-cam.com/video/Fm7r-bL8Cqk/v-deo.html ). The pattern should be linked in that description. You get some glimpses of me making up that blouse - but the long sleeved version-- at the end of that video!
@@ShannonMakes Thank you so much! I'll check it out.
Have a wonderful day and greetings from Germany.
And I already saw the holiday dress (which is awesome again 😉) but did not realize the link to the blouse...
So thanks again.

😂😂😂😂 I don't remember the whole bit I sang when you said The Line™, but please enjoy the part I do remember.
Oh yes, I definitely enjoyed it... it's not very often I wake up to verse in my comments section!
@@ShannonMakes glad you got a kick out of it 😂
I have not seen the show
It’s good, I recommend (clearly 🤣)
I love it...but I see a kimono ...
well if you watch the first video in the series, where I break down the OG robe based on the screen version and the comments from the costumers, they have literally stated that the robe was based on a kimono pattern that was then modified. Everyone's calling it a banyan b/c of the time period of the show, but... it's a kimono.
@@ShannonMakes will definitely watch it. I love the tutorial and somehow i believed i wouldn't be able to make it...it's until I saw the final look i got the "aha" feeling
You could *definitely* make it!! Got a step by step tutorial coming out next week that should help you even more!!
