- Using a vintage WW2 Coveralls pattern as a base, I sew myself 3 different pieces that can be mixed and matched to make 4 different, super cute outfits. What a great way to maximize on a capsule wardrobe and save space in your closet! All four iterations are really cute - you have the original, full jumpsuit with the 1940s style blouse front, joined to the original pants pattern that has GIANT pockets. Then you can switch out the blouse for a pair of more modernly styled overalls BUT that use a straps pattern that was patented in the 1890s for use on athletic corsets. The pants and the original blouse can also be worn separately, as part of normal wardrobe... I suppose technically you could say the same thing about the overalls top, but it might look a bit silly!

Wow! Love this make so much! You get the full cover/overall aesthetic without the annoyance of having to completely disrobe when you really need to pee! 😜 Also, may I just say how much I appreciate that you take the time to prepare your fabric and pattern appropriately before cutting. I am gobsmacked at how many sewists I see on UA-cam trying to craft wearables with unwashed, extremely wrinkled fabric and crumpled up pattern pieces. This approach is so counterintuitive to achieving a decent final product and drives me absolutely bonkers!
Thank you! Yes, I always wash and at least quickly press my fabric - while I'm very much a fan of people sewing in whatever way suits them and brings them joy, it feels wasteful to me to sew clothing with unwashed fabric, as it will inevitably shrink in the wash and most likely become unwearable... it's one of the few sewing rules that I do encourage sticking to in almost every circumstance!
Thank you! Drives me crazy too.
Got to say, I don’t even mind the traffic noise, it just feels more “real” ☺️ and I love this whole make!!
LOL I love that opinion! Makes my life easier… should leave in the wicked screaming match that happened earlier today between a cyclist and an auto!
The fabric not responding well to ironing doesn't mean it's not 100% cotton! Cotton fabrics made from yarn with higher ply can be a damn pain to iron, but they're also far less likely to wrinkle throughout the day. Cotton can actually be very resistant to ironing depending on the yarn type and weave. Canvas fabrics are typically made with 2 or 3-ply yarn (sometimes more!) which often makes them very resistant to ironing (but also to wrinkling, pros and cons). Steam usually isn't enough for well-made canvas, in my experience you typically need to spray the fabric with water and let it soak in for a few moments before ironing on the hottest setting. A damp dish towel (as in soaked and wrung out) over the top of the fabric also works.
Hmm, very interesting and good to know. I don't care enough to do a burn test to confirm fiber content, but if I run into this problem with another canvas, I'll try the dish towel method! Thank you
All of this, plus the environmental heat & humidity situation. Back when I lived in London, Ontario (30C + and 80%+ humidity all summer), I used to get up before 6am to do my ironing, because if I waited until later in the day, the iron wouldn't do anything, because the clothing was already hot and steamy.
@@gadgetgirl02 Oooh that's so interesting! I lived in Melbourne, Australia most of my life and whilst it gets plenty hot it rarely gets humid there, so I've never considered that!
Late to the party (sorry), but as someone who lives in overalls for my work, I would 100% suggest a zipper pocket on the overalls bib attachment! That's been a life changer!
💯🥰
I love how you're all, "Let's do a simpler video than usual," and then you go on to explain every step, include great b-roll, show your thought process, and all the options you've made. I can't wait until you say, "I decided to do a really complicated video for you all," because it will be a Steven Spielberg-level production about making every outfit ever designed in the 1940s or something. 🤣🤣
LOL omg, yea, I was editing this and thinking to myself, "wow, you really didn't actually make this any easier on yourself in the end, did you?!" ....feeling called out (but also appreciate that you noticed, so that makes me feel a bit better)!!!
This video was exactly the motivation I need to finally get cracking on my own coveralls project I've been procrastinating lol. Yours turned out gorgeous! And those POCKETS. Love your vids as always :)
You got this!! 💪💪💪 Thank you!
I am feeling the sudden and overwhelming urge to make some of these two-parts coverall for myself! I almost never wear trousers because modern ones just look miserable and the fabrics they're made of usually feels atrocious but this! Giant pocket, great movment range, pretty vintage style; it has everything I love.
yesss! I have not used this specific pattern as pure pants before, but I have a similar pair that I made with these same features - wide legs, higher waist, vintage look - and I love them!
Unbelievably cute! The bib top is definitely serving Land Girl and I love it!
oh, so true!! love me a good Land Girl outfit...one day I'll make a proper one, but for now, I'm here for the vibes!
I'm slowly coming around to jumpsuits, and this design and make is making me fall for them, even more. 😍 I love that they can be worn as separates.
I find them SO comfy, but agreed that the versatility is a huge bonus!
I think that I would make 3 blouses with different sleeve lengths, long, short, and sleeveless. I'm not sure that I would make the overall conversion, but it looks super cute on you. My major objection to wearing anything jumpsuit-esque has been the need to completely undress to use the bathroom. This concept fixes that for me.
Fun idea! Although it’d take a LOT of the same fabric… I think a long sleeved version would actually be a super fun addition though! Too bad I don’t have more fabric 😭
I love the method of the sports corset as a button closure on overalls, it looks adorable!
Love this!! The corset straps, the versatility, the color - such a cool project 😍 I’m working on a dress with separate bodice and skirt, and now you’re tempting me to start planning a second bodice for it too 😅
Thank you!! And heck, why not a second bodice!? 🤣
This is a superb pair of overalls. I love how you made the tops and bottom seperate - so clever
Thank you! 💙💚
This pattern has been in my etsy favourites for so long. I just want a drop seat in my jumpsuits.
This pattern has a drop seat! (I just don't want it, so I always eliminate it)
I wonder if you could do this with heavy duty snaps, and fold the pants waistband down to hide them when worn on their own. I’ve done removable overall bibs for a pair of shorts, with snaps on the inside of the waist and the outside of the bib, since it wouldn’t be on its own, but the shirt part looks great! I just always question jumpsuits and having to get nekkid to go to the bathroom 😆
If you have a wider waist than I do, maybe you could get away with it... I have just barely an inch of space, so any folding down of the waistband would just look messy and cause the pants to not fit.
Oh my gosh, this turned out amazing! I love versatility in a wardrobe and that color is top notch. 👌
Thank you so much 🤗
I agree, you really hit the sweet spot between versatility and style! The garments look great individually and worn together and it's very practical. Great project!
Thanks so much! 😊
This is really one of your best makes and videos. So chill and versatile it really does how your skills have grown.
Thank you! Although I'm not sure it's that the skills themselves have grown, just maybe that I've gotten better at making videos and communicating what I'm doing 🤣
One of my favorite cover all features is a tool loop. A simple angled loop for a hammer or, usually for me, measuring tape
You’re the second person to suggest this, and I whole-heartedly agree!!
seriously the cutest thing you've made in recent memory! corgi butt is also a winner!
Aww thank you! Glad you enjoyed it... and yes, it IS heckin' cute! So is corgi butt tho 😍
Love it! I recently made a jumpsuit, an outfit I never thought I'd want in my wardrobe, and it's quite fun. I went for a somewhat less practical and more whimsical route, giving it rainbow cuffs and collar. I did add a gusset to the pants part for better movement.
I love the sound of your whimsical cuffs and collar! Sounds fantastic!
I wish all my everyday clothes could be this functional AND cool. That color is absolutely stunning on you too!
Thank you so much!!!
What a fun project! The green looks wonderful on you! You are so right about the blouse needing top stitching. It made all the difference in the finished product. Those straps are fantastic. Both in fit and function. Wish I had a project to use that design. Each wardrobe piece looks and fits wonderfully. Another job well done
Yes! Thank you!
I really like that pattern. It’s literally what Rosie the Riveter wore to build the planes tanks and ships of WW II.
I was looking at the overall version at Folkwear patterns, but the pockets on this won me over. You can fit a big wrench in one and lunch in the other front pants pocket.
Yes, the pattern was drafted from a rare extant garment from the 1940s and named after the seller's relative who was a factory war worker during WWII! The pockets are definitely a key selling point on this pattern, to be sure!
❤. Absolutely adorable! And so many wearing options❣️. If you have any fabric left, you could make a pair of shorts or a skirt to expand the options even further.
It really looks great on you and those 40s vibes are strong but not overpowering
Thank you!!! 💙💜💙
I work on a farm and am constantly wearing out coveralls and have considering making my own, a lot of modern patterns for jumpsuit patterns I've seen look great if all I did was stand in them but don't pass the much needed (for my job anyways) squat test, I wonder if these would work...and the versatility in pieces looks, *chiefs kiss*
They absolutely do pass the squat test, at least in my case - the original pair I made for myself (see my Recycled Rosie the Riveter video: ua-cam.com/video/MAhN9ObJ_5U/v-deo.html ) were so that I could use them as a warm-up suit backstage as a professional acrobat. So not only can I squat, but do the splits, do handstands... you name it. That was a must for me.
I like the way you mark notches. Well done project as usual!
Thank you very much!!
Absolutely LOVE your coverall multi-piece!
Thank you so much!
Yeah, what you just said. I don't have a decent pattern, but asked myself why not add a bib and straps to a good pants pattern.
I love the garments! And I am SO HERE for spooktacular content 🦇👻
Yay! Thank you!! I hope to be able to do more than one Halloween video, but alas, family emergency might prevent that from happening this year 😥
I hope everything will be okay, but remember to take care of yourself first and foremost. Good luck.
We Stan blouse patterns that don't strain on the traps ❤
Yes we do!
I love how you marked, on your body, lol The outfit is adorable in all its forms. Take care, be well
Thank you, you too!
Omg you should make a skirt to go with it too! That set would be perfect for traveling.
I personally wouldn't wear it that much, but I think that if it would be a great idea for someone else's capsule wardrobe!! Maybe you should tackle it?!
@@ShannonMakes unfortunately I don't sew, I just live vicariously through UA-camrs who do lol
Fair enough!!
Once again huge props for extra versatility ideas!!! And I agree, I love the look of the corset straps, such an interesting detail!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it! :-D
If anybody's interested in making this for yourself the book, 'A History of the Paper Pattern Industry ' has a vintage grided siren suit pattern that separates via buttons along the waist. You could definitely customize this pattern to your liking it you don't mind drawing it out and possibly needing to grade it.
I feel like taking the (commercially available in multiple formats and already graded to multiple sizes) pattern I used and just cutting it in two at the waist sounds a bit simpler and faster than drawing it from the book and grading it… but hey, to each their own! It’s great to know that a similar garment is already out there!
@@ShannonMakes I agree that it would definitely be easier to alter the commercially available pattern then draft the gridded pattern. But....I already have more than half of the book pattern drafted and I am too cheap and stubborn to buy another pattern. 😅
LOL 🤣 in that case, completely makes sense!
I am a sucker for multi-way clothing and this just has me so excited to sew :D I haven't seen multi-way overalls done before and I'm a new level of excited over it! they turned out so great!
Thank you!!! Glad to get people excited for sewing! Hope you make a pair of your own
@@ShannonMakes you're welcome and thank you! :D I'm certainly contemplating it - i feel motivated to tackle existing projects again too
You need to do a pair of shorts with the pattern. And I mean keeping the volume of the pockets. A jumpsuit with trousers, shorts, short sleeves, and overalls as an option would be very fun and useful. I have the overall pattern that Rachel has used and my plan is to make it shorts and a long pair. It’s never going to be chilly here in central Florida so 😅
I don't really wear shorts, though, is the thing. I never have liked them much, even as a kid, although as an adult, the chub rub drives me off the walls!! So I think instead that YOU should make the shorts version, since it sounds like it'd get much more use over in Florida than here in Montreal!
@@ShannonMakes you could do a pedal-pusher version (off screen) ? Those pockets are The Best!
I love these pieces. They are so versatile and neutral without being boring. Thanks so much for your video.
Glad you like them! You are so welcome!
14:31 - A good way to finish the shoulder seams but not have to join that dart fullness into a French seam is to use a yoke across the back shoulders. Hope this helps.
Adding a yoke (beside requiring me to do further pattern alterations) would have meant taking out one of the vital design elements in the bodice however - the vertical gather. It that runs from shoulder to waist, and is essential in allowing for a full range of movement in the arms while keeping a fitted look, and while yes, it could be accommodated in other ways, that would require yet more reworking of a pattern that I love, so my preference would be either just do the French seam (as I did), or to use a difference finishing method and keep the pattern as-is. Just my preference though!
This turned out extremely pretty and sooo versatile! Well done 😊
Thank you!! 🥰🥰 please feel free to stick around and check out some of the other projects on the channel… there are some fun ones here!
THOSE STRAPS ARE SOOOOOO FREAKIN CUTE! If you make an in depth video about them I would 100% watch. I have an overalls pattern I’ve been wanting to make but can’t find the hardware for the life of me 😅
I do have a video on them, as I mentioned. It's linked in the description!
@@ShannonMakes haha go figure! I definitely missed that bit when I was completely enamoured by the straps and your sewing!
Wow, I can't believe it! I just made a wrap skirt and and wrap top to put together and have it look like a wrap dress as well as wear them separately! I love what you did and i might try making the pants too!
That is awesome!! Hope you give the pants a go!
Girl, that is a good bruise! It could fit right in to my collection 😂
I... I was legitimately not even aware there was a bruise in the video 🤣
@@ShannonMakes Oops!
I absolutely love them, the aesthetic and practicality are god tier! Xx
Thank you so much!!
Future aditions: inside tight pockets in the big pockets for your phone/small objects. Speaking as someone who lives in onesies/overalls, my phone is always taking a dive when I go to the bathroom or sit down weird.
I was actually out all day with my phone in one pocket, and my camera in the other, and there were no problems! I don’t think the pockets are quite big enough to have proper access to inside pockets (although I love them in bags/purses/backpacks!)
@@ShannonMakes That's a glowing review of this pattern, then! I'll have to try it.
Merci!
Merci à toi! 🫶🫶
This turned out super cute and as you say versatile! I am awfully tempted to make the overall version with the corset inspired straps!
IT'S SUPER HECKING CUTE... I highly recommend it! The pattern is taken off of an extant garment (so only in one size), but you can get the pattern in bust 30"-42"... not the most inclusive for sure, but at least better than the vintage repros that come in only the one, original size.
The videos explaining how you do your sewing plus recording make me respect your craftsmanship even more!!! you are a certified badie my dude!
Wow, thank you!
lovely stuff, have an appreciation for that strap design, think there are many ways to use it
Absolutely!
Jump suits/coveralls are some of my favorite pieces to wear 💜 excited to watch the video!
Ooooh, I hope you enjoy it... I do just ADORE this pattern!
Love it!
Thanks!!
All of the options for this are so cute!!!! I especially love the brilliant combination of the straps on an overall top!
Thank you so much!!
CUTE!!! Beautiful green.

I love the green. I wonder what the top would look like without the pockets...those back pleats are wonderful.
Super cute! ❤

Another cute outfit!
Thank you! 🤗🫶
Excellently done love it.
Glad you enjoyed it
That's a fantastic pattern!
Thank you! 😊
You could wear the overall top like a vest on its own to make a 5th outfit
You cooould… it’s still has the belt part on though, so it looks a little funny 😆 It felt a bit too much of a stretch for most people’s wardrobes to claim it as a 5th for the title/thumbnail, but it definitely is an option!!
Love it!!!! 😍😍😍 It’s a really cute outfit(s) and I love the versatility! 💯 chefs kiss!!
Thank you! 🤗
Bravo ! The result is super cute ! I might steal the idea of the shoulder straps for the jumpsuit I'm currently making, if you don't mind 😅
Absolutely, please do!
I love your tailor's ham!
Thank you, I sell them as kits on my KoFi store... comes with a ham, sausage, and pineapple pin cushion!
Fantastique !!! Bravo 👍🏻
Merciii! 🫶🫶
I love the versatility of this make. It looks amazing!
Thank you! 🥰🥰
It turned out awesome! I’m glad you’re happy with what you turned out considering the indecision before starting. I used to wear overalls constantly as a kid, brings a lot of nostalgia. Thank you for sharing ❤
Ahh yes, the constant tug of war between wanting to make the most complicated, cool, unique and custom thing ever, and the need for it to also look *good* LOL... a constant balancing act over here 🤣🤣
These outfits look great! I love your creative approach to sewing.
Thank you so much!!
This is so undeniably cute! I love how the bib turned out in the overall portion. Especially adding the corset straps. I am now officially hooked on them and want to try them for other projects. Now that the weather is finally coming down to a more manageable comfort level, it's time to get back into the sewing room. Clean it up and make the space usable again. I just recently bought the coquelicot skirt pattern and really want to try it out. I want to try the secret skirt extension for maming a longer skirt for the cooler weather and have the option for a shorter skirt for the summer. I think this video just gave me the inspiration to do so. I want a skirt that can go from history bounding to causal park play date with the other homeschool kids. To date night without having six different garments to deal with. One skirt to rule them all, lol 😜😁
ONE SKIRT TO RULE THEM ALL!!! yes, definitely!!
I love this! The traffic noise I think is the allure of a major city in Canada lol
lol 🤣🤣🤣🚗🚙🚓🚧🚜 if you really wanna see the allure of Montreal in all it's glory, planes, trains, automobiles and construction noise, highly recommend the first of my "how I make my sewing videos" BTS videos... it's pretty hilarious
realize with horror that I missed the other video...😶🌫 But this ovewrall inspires me to finally sew a bathrobe from all my old towels💪 maybe even in the style of your Hobbit bathrobe.... 🤔
Well, if it's any consolation, the UA-cam notification system is NOTORIOUSLY hit-or-miss! But such a good video, do highly recommend you give it a watch at some point! Towels make great bathrobes!
I have a pair of overalls in a thinner fabric, where you can easily just hide the upper part of it inside of the pants, so they are basically just pants. Don't think it would work in canvas though 😁 But then, there is always the option to just have it hanging down on the outside, for a 'cool' look!
But yeah, if you want this many options, you probably need it all detachable 👌
How cute!! It looks amazing. And the video itself was great too. Not underproduced at all. A full on tutorial is not what I'm here for. I'm here for entertainment, inspiration and relaxation. All my needs were fully met. So dont worry too much about production value. People are here for you and your ideas. Thats often enough.
Thank you 😍 Unfortunately I still ended up falling into old habits and way over-doing it when it came to filming the process... I still fussed and faffed with the camera for about 5x longer than I should have, and definitely missed my original deadline for finishing this garment 😭😭😭 I would love to believe that people are here for me and my ideas, but the analytics show that that is very much not the case, although I LOVE that *you* are, that's very kind and I appreciate your words of encouragement!
I am so sorry to hear that analytics don't back me up here. Stupid reality.
I did have a sneaky suspicion that you spent more time on the filming than planned because it looked that good. Would it help to figure out a few standard configurations that look good and stick to those? I know nothing about filming, but a little about streamlining processes. And standardising where possible might help.
I hope that at least you always have fun in making your videos and that it will not start to stress you out. Good luck and thank you!🍀❤️
Thank you! ❤️💚🧡 I do have several angles that I tend to come back to again and again, which yes, streamlines the process, but then also takes the creativity out of it, and the videos start to feel like the same, canned approach 😥
I do generally have fun making the videos, and I love making THINGS, I just wish the videos did better... I'm very tired of videos bombing for no apparent reason!!
Understandable. I do think that being authentic and doing what you love is the best approach. If you can keep at that long enough, hopefully you'll keep growing. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you🤞and keep enjoying your content and try to engage a bit more. I've heard that helps ;)
oh, I do generally have very good engagement rates! That is fortunately not one of the problems :-D As for the longevity of my channel, it might be coming to an end soon here, but we'll see! Ya never know!
Hooray for topstitching! It makes such a difference.
So true, especially on stubborn faux cotton fabric, lol
Oh man. I just started the apron. Now I want this! 😆 (And I hand sew...) 🤤
Hahaha oh noooo!! Thé To-Make list grows ever longer (I know that feeling)!!
Love the modularity!! Would love to see more of this type of project.
Thank you! Have you seen my video about the skirt with the 12-ish" hem extension that can be removed?! That's along the same lines
@@ShannonMakes I have! It was awesome and I’m here for all of it.
Along the same lines of Butterick Lifestyle or Vogue's Coordinates patterns. Also as a back bone of a capsule wardrobe. It's cool seeing what others come up with when it comes to coordinates and how it can be mix and match. You might see if there is a room for a skirt, vest or jacket. I like what you did with this project.
My wardrobe is mostly black but I have a few colors in it. If I make something that isn't solid black it's something that pairs well with it. I don't have much of a clothing budget. Most of my clothes are 7-11 years old and still in good shape with weekly wearing and washing. Though I am really itching to get a all new wardrobe.
My clothes can be dressed up or down and range from professional to business casual to punk while exuding LAZY Goth. So my wardrobe isn't very big though most think it's huge.
I have more ideas for my next batch of coordinates to make. Thanks.
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it and that it maybe gave you some ideas for your own capsule wardrobe!!
10 Thomas up. Really great
I am going to assume you meant "thumbs" up! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Oooh, all those pockets. Men just dont understand womens love affair with pockets, lol. The pup gets it, she totally approved the big pockets, more treats.
Men don't understand because they are given giant pockets in their ready-to-wear clothing, whereas we are lucky to be able to fit a quarter in most of our pockets, and that's if they're real ones and not faux pockets 😭😭
I love the fake jumpsuit. All of the aesthetics of a jumpsuit, none of the acrobatics when going to the bathroom.
thank you! :-D
This video is so very you! It's me sometimes too. Trying to fit too much together. Every look turned out wonderfully! Though I do have to ask where did you get the t-shirt it's perfect with the pants!
It's partly me, partly the curse of UA-cam - always feeling like you have to do something amazing or impressive or unique or else it won't get any views 🥴😭 But I do love to make super custom things, that's part of the reason I got so hooked on sewing. So it's not all to blame on the algorithm! The t-shirt came from iloveoldhouses.com
@@ShannonMakes yeah makes sense. I still think you should be getting way more views. Your content is great you do a wide range of things that are so very amazing! Just the dream table build was epic. The things you managed to find always amazes me.
Thanks for the info on the shirt I will tell a kid cause they are better at online shopping. Besides they are always bugging me to think of things I want and I rarely can. Or it’s too expensive at least in my mind.
Aww, thank you 🫶 Glad you found something for the gift list - remember, it's OK to treat yourself sometimes (even if that's in the form of letting someone ELSE buy you something nice)!!

I made .tops pants ..shorts and matching jackets. For my kids and me... i used to lo e to sew.. my machine doesnt like to work all the time soooooo .its a hassle to sew im 70.. 😅dont know how to use a serger ..to many threads
I usually don't notice background sounds until a maker asks forgiveness for it.
That's because we often spend an inordinate amount of time either waiting to film when there isn't any, or we carefully and painstakingly edit it out... plz see the second of my two BTS/"how I make my videos" videos for more details, lol
Oooh, i like the straps too. How could you use that for a front closure on jackets and pants? I miss button up pants. Possible thrift flip?
I mean, you certainly could - the technique was patented not only for the straps of the sports corset, but of the front closure as well (the corset didn't have a busk, but rather buttons)... highly recommend watching that video for more info. ua-cam.com/video/Pr0KlQ-hxSs/v-deo.html
@@ShannonMakes thanks! I want to make pants but never liked zippers. I used to have some jeans with no pockets and they laced up the front, best pair i ever had.
Wait - can we talk about that BED STORAGE? Wow. Is that also something you made?
