  • It's the afternoon of Day Two of my Eastern Oregon Overland Adventure in the Subaru Forester, and it's time to drop down into the canyon and attempt the craziest water crossing I've ever faced, accompanied by an assortment of 4x4 rigs. After a pleasant night camped on the riverbank, we are faced with an unexpected complication the next morning.
In this episode, we'll meet up with fellow UA-camrs Coyote Works and SW Idaho Overlanding, as well as Iroh, possibly the cutest overlanding puppy you've ever seen.

Thanks Donald for exposure to your subscribers. It was great to finally meet up with you on the trails and I couldn't think of a better place to do it. Really pretty cool how it all worked out on Fathers Day even. Looks like you made it to that old corral and lava road. Hope we can do it again some time soon. George.

To me this spot is THE iconic SW Idaho Overlanding location, I'd been wanting to get here for so long...it's amazingly serendipitous that we were both headed there on the same weekend. Really glad we got to meet up and I look forward to future treks behind that old yellow Jeep!

11:40 WOW! 😮 It's amazing to see what a relatively stock Forester is capable of!
The OEM cold air intake snorkel also has a water drainage/separator under the airbox, as well as a small, secondary water catch box, inside the air pipe closest to throttle body.
Even the main computer is located inside the passengers footwell, totally protected from the elements. It's very well-designed, truly capable SUV.
How much total ground clearance does your Forester have with the tires and mild lift kit?
Fantastic video, your cinematography is breathtaking!! 😊

Nice trip. Something to consider when doing a deep crossing like that, especially with your intake where it is, would be to attach a tarp across the grill/front end (think COVID mask for your car). That can save a whole lot of potential trouble...
    Keep having fun.

Nice job on the crossing. A word of advice. I crossed the Mojave River on a trip two months ago in my Jeep. It was basically the same kind of issue. The water was about 2 inches below my air intake. The crossing went well, but as a precaution, I took the Jeep in to have the diffs looked at the following week. I’m glad I did. The mechanic found water in the rear differential. It was serviced, and I was able to avoid any future problems with it. Great video Donald. Looking forward to the next one.

Ok, we had to go back and watch this one. This is where we just were last weekend. We didn’t realize the spot we picked to camp is where you were after you crossed the river, but we tried coming down from that side. No way. Haha! Marshall’s like “I’m not giving up on this canyon” 🤣 So…I think next year after things dry out we will come down the other side and now we know to just drive across the river. 😂

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 роки тому

Could you see the gravel bar? (not sure how the view is from where you stopped). When Jason was there in January (he came down the far side), the river was a couple feet deeper than when I was there in June...it might not have even been possible to camp in that spot on the bar, and maybe also not possible to even cross the river. There are a number of campsites along that other side though, so it's still worth getting down in there. It really is a beautiful spot.

This was such a great video Donald! I think it’s my favorite one yet! As I watched this video there were a few things I wanted to comment on, so hopefully I remember everything.
-Holy B-roll!! You had a tremendous amount of it at the beginning of the video. I’m sure most viewers have no idea how much work it takes.
-The river crossing! It was a risk but a very calculated one. Great execution, minus the slightly aggressive entry 😃. Good display of Your driving skill!
-getting out of there was even better! BUT a did anyone else notice the kayaker going up stream? 🤣 he deserves a little recognition.
    Looking forward to part 4!

Great song choice! You have some really awesome places to off-road! Where I live the entire state is so built up there’s really only 1 decent place to go. Lucky for me that I live near it. That was a risky crossing, it you did it. The fact that your out over-landing with more dedicated 4WD vehicles and your able to keep up is a testament to Subaru’s durability.

Thanks for the informative videos Donald. Like the tires! Granted Subies aren’t that water-friendly, that crossing was about the average depth we negotiate in Mongolia (cue: scarcity of paved roads let alone bridges). The trick we found on the Forester is to remove the flat air duct just behind the grille so water doesn’t splash into the intake. The more difficult problem in our case with the JDM Foresters is the location of ECU under the passenger side floor mat - this does get into water unless reinstalled into the glove box. Anyway, enjoy the videos man keep em running!

Impressionnant comme passage à gué! Il y a de quoi ne pas être rassuré avec une telle profondeur! Je sais perso que je n'aurais pas eu le cran d'essayer, bravo! 👍

I recently got stuck on a water crossing that I’ve done several times, on this occasion I was alone and had to stack a ton of rocks to break free. It was a fun experience since I managed to break free after a couple attempts but a valuable lesson to always be prepared for unexpected turns of events in the backcountry.

Ever thought about using a snorkel? Get yourself some Keen water sandals they last forever and have much more traction then flip-flops. Another epic adventure. I had faith that your Subaru would come though as always, looked like your drivers side headlight was out.
    Very well done as always!

I started researching snorkels the moment I got home from this trip. I always thought it was kind of an over-the-top unnecessary thing for what I do, but I don't want to cut it that close ever again. :-)

softroadingthewest I look at it as better safe then sorry as a hiker river crossing is dangerous enough on foot, if you weren’t able to find a shallow place to cross you might of been stuck there.

Another amazing adventure and great cinematography! But dude, there has to be a better way to wash your rig... Ok, that was great tense filled moments there. Glad as you that you had some friends along. Thanks for sharing your amazing journey.

LOL, it's funny, I picked up so much mud getting to this spot that I did actually use my bucket at the river to wash my side windows, I couldn't see out! :-)

Haha, I was definitely nervous both times. I can't recommend fording a river this deep, but I'm nonetheless glad I did it. :-)

I love that your car has minimal mods I'm hoping to do something similar with my 2011 Kia Sportage LX AWD after putting a dobison lift on it with some bfg mud tires and black rhino boxers going to hopefully be taking a cross country softroading trip this summer to the grand canyon with one of my friends she's always wanted to go and I figured no time like the present if 2020 taught me anything it's that life's far to short to not experience everything humanly possible within my budget I'm looking forward to this trip as much as she is

I have yet to see anyone ask "Where in Eastern Oregon". I'm looking for challenging places to take my jeep and all I've found is logging roads.
