      I love my Forester, A vehicle isn't stuck if it gets itself unstuck by itself. A Vehicle is stuck when you have to use some form of recovery equipment. I don't mean to be technical. Subaru is the best choice, because you can buy, and install a dual range manual trans. I don't know of a all wheel drive car that you can do that. Subarus get decent gas mileage. They do pretty good off road, if you don't do really extreme off road and drive like a crazy person than you usually don't break stuff. I would love to off road a old Jeep Grand waggonier, or better yet a Ford High Boy 1970'S 4x4 truck. 78 and 79 because they have the best looking grill and square headlights. That looking cool on the trail comes with a price though. Keeping the tank full with gas without burning a hole in your pocket. I have always been a Ford guy ever since I started driving in 97. My first car was a 79 Ford Thunderbird Heratige, but I like the 75- 91 Ford Econoline vans, mainly the 87- 91 vans because of the multlport fuel injection, and over drive auto trans. So you get more modern technology in a old school Ford van. The 74 Lincoln Continental 4 door I had only got about 6 to 7 MPG in town. I think that I had a carb that was too big or something else was not right, because I should of got a little better mileage. I sold it, and did not keep it long. I did not learn my lesson, now I have a 75 Lincoln Continental Town Car that I have the engine, trans, and whole front clip off. I have a lot of new parts for it so I am stuck restoring it a little at a time. Even after I restore it l will have to buy a lot of gas for it. I checked on putting it on my insurance policy, and it will raise my insurance a lot, because the lady said that it was a big car that can do a lot of damage. Ever since I started driving I get the state minimum for insurance, so I won't have to pay a lot. I will have to see about putting it on it's own policy at a different insurance company maybe it will be cheaper than the insurance company I have now. As for the Japanese cars I always got them with a manual trans, I would never buy one with a auto trans. The first 93 Honda Accord I got in the early 2000'S. I would off road without telling anyone where I was going, did not have a cell phone back than, and no recovery equipment. I would get stuck just for the fun of it. I got the Honda's unstuck by myself, except the time I drove I think the 93 in the woods in a hole, my mom happened to drive by, and see me in the woods, so she stopped by and drove the car while I pushed, and we got it out. Than I had a 97 Honda Accord that I got stuck in the same woods in the mud while it was raining, and had to walk all the way to my mom's house in the rain which was kinda far. I got my van from my mom's house and drove it to get the Honda unstuck. Than I had to drive my van back to my mom's house and walk back to get the Honda. Another time I drove a Honda into a ditch thinking that I could cross it and go into the woods. I got stuck. Some guys came by and said that I better get out before the owner of the land finds out, so they helped me get the car out. I got my Thunderbird stuck 2 times. I got my van stuck at least 2 times. I got my mowers stuck so many times that I can't count. So I am really not that new to getting stuck. If you don't get stuck at least once than you are not in the right place. Getting stuck off road makes it more fun, and a challenge. Sorry for the long message, but I like to type a lot.

      Haha, I'm actually not too fond of being the leader, this whole thing was sort of an uplanned improvisation and I somehow ended up taking the lead. I felt bad that the area I had planned for snow camping was entirely without snow, LOL. I was out in this same area exactly a year ago and there was so much snow, it would've been impossible to drive up that ridgeline the group climbed, and plenty of snow at the bottom. Weird warm winter. :-)

      Check out my channel, I can off road with strangers, or alone. I already had my dream of flying a powered parachute, or paraglider stomped right into the ground. So I decided on off roading as a alternative to flying. Now that it's winter I need to get my Forester finished before winter ends. I will have to go to Colorado where it snows to off road in the snow.. If I find a off road group in Colorado than great, but if I can't then I am prepared to of road alone. Subi groups on Fakebook are not really that helpful. They are more about comedy, and what brand lift kit you have. One Subi group a girl told me that I can:t go to Colorado because of the virus, yet I saw plenty of red, blue, and green mountain tags on front and back of people's cars in my state of Florida. The girl also said that the locals are not that welcoming to outsiders, so I guess I have the right to go up to people from Colorado and say that they are not welcome in my state of Florida lol. I think that the girl watched too many movies. This is not the movies like Rambo where the Shariff tells Rambo that he can't eat in his town, and would have to go to the next town to eat. Every time I go on Fakebook it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I really don't want anything to do with this Colorado Subi group, and unfortunately I will probably judge all the Coloradians the same way. And if you break down on the trail and can't fix it there don't hold your breath that one of the group members will tow you all the way to the main road where your road side assistance will tow your car to a shop, or a better place where you can work on your car yourself. If you have cell phone reception than you can call different auto parts stores to see if they have the parts in stock that you need, or they usually can get the parts the next day. Then comes getting one of the members to take you to the auto parts store, usually a hand full of cash motivates them. Also the off road groups will take you on the trail a lot farther than you would go by yourself, so it will get even more expensive to recover your car. You are more apt to do stupid stuff off road with a group than if you are by yourself. The group members will usually be nice to you, but deep down they usually don't want you in the group, because you are a outsider from another state. People believe that if they go hundreds of miles on a trail off the main road they might see something different well I guess that they might see Bigfoot or something lol. I would definitely watch the Colorado off road groups, because the Coloradians are not that happy about all the people moving to their state, and the members might take it out on you. I am going prepared with a 12,000 pound winch, 2 come alongs in case one breaks, all kinds of recovery equipment. Plenty of food and water, and a lot of other stuff that I think that I might need. I will probably buy 4 tire chains, and keep them on the whole time, because in the snow in the woods they won't wear out. They will wear out on the bare road. I will have to make a video about this topic on my channel.

    I live in northern Vermont, and I've been driving for 46 years. This is snow country! If I may make a suggestion, your tires should NOT be aired down in snow. Your engine works harder, and your traction (as you found out) is less than nominal. I have never gotten stuck in snow, driving in some very serious conditions--in both RWD, and FWD vehicles. If I don't get struck at least once every trip than off roading is boring to me. I like the challenge of getting stuck and being able to get myself unstuck by myself. In early 2000 I bought a 93 Honda Accord and I would go by myself without telling anyone where I was going. I had no cell phone, no recovery equipment I would drive in the woods and get stuck for the fun of it. I only needed help 2 times all the rest of the times I was able to get myself unstuck by myself. Getting stuck is what makes off roading a lot more fun.

    Canola oil smells amazing on a chainsaw. It's like maple syrup. This looks like the slushy messes I'm used to in PA. I always wondered what I was doing wrong watching UA-cam videos of snow driving. Once I start to hear people complain about slush and heavy snow, I usually get a chuckle. All said, the only limiting factors of your Subaru is ground clearance, lockable axles and that transmission. This looks like my old Pocono mountain days.

    For those using veggie oil for bar oil, be aware that it will oxidize and harden if it sits awhile, smells terrible. I think peanut oil was less prone to hardening and going rancid, but froze to butter consistency at a relatively high temperature. Don't hold me to that, been awhile since testing.

      * shrug * For me, it's fun to see how far I can get with the car as-is, but if I have to mess around with chains, it just becomes work instead of fun. There was no critical need to get up this road. I've been up there before, and with the weather, we weren't going to camp up there anyway. I prefer to just go elsewhere and keep having fun rather than muck around with chains. :-)

    One thing about driving in snow like that, it sure cleans off your undercarriage. Do your tires have the snowflake in mountain symbol on the sidewall or are they simply AT's? I'm in Canada and we use summer wheels/winter wheels. My winter wheels have tires with the snowflake symbol and are considerably narrower than my summer ones. Feels like you are in a tank up in our mountains where we get similar snow. Because they are not used for road trips cheap steelies and cheap made in Thailand tires do the trick. Cost me $1,200 CAN to do all four, be way cheaper in the US.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 роки тому

      Yes, the KO2 is three-peak snowflake rated tire. It doesn't compare to a dedicated snow tire I'm sure but these are by far the best tires I've ever driven in snow. When the snow is fresh and cold, I don't even spin my wheels, they're quite grippy. This warm wet slush is a whole other thing though, it's just not sticky like cold snow is. I don't get into enough snow to justify a second set of tires. Most years in my city we get either no snow at all, or one little snowstorm with a few inches that melts away in a day or two. Snow-rated AT tires fit my needs nicely.

      I don't really do enough of this to warrant an entire second set of tires. My city gets no snow either, maybe a couple of inches every other year. And the 3-peak-snowflake rated KO2s coupled with Subaru's AWD perform fabulously in normal snow...very grippy, and my underpowered Subaru struggles to even spin the tires when the snow is fresh and cold. This was warm heavy slush. Honestly it was kinda fun to struggle through it...snow is normally a little too easy.

      I had never heard of this before and thought it was clever; a few other commenters expressed concern about the oil turning rancid and gummy. I don't know if that would be a problem if you emptied the oil reservoir each time (which is the point of running food oil, to be able to drain it on the ground after use). Personally I will just keep using regular petroleum bar oil in my saw and keeping something underneath it to deal with the inevitable oozing. :-)

      @@softroadingthewest Appreciate the response. Those are good points. If I went that route, I'd only use the cooking/olive oil when adventuring.

      Yeah, like the other replies mention, it is pretty effortless in the west. More than 60% of Oregon is national forest or BLM land, and it's all crisscrossed with dirt roads; other western states are similar. You just pick an area and go. Similar to what billy mentioned, I can drive about 25 minutes in any direction and be on dirt roads through public lands. I typically drive a couple hours on the highway though to get into deeper wilderness and into different ecosystems.
