I Built a Silver Sky KILLER for £700 - Sire S3, AWESOME Toltec Pickups!

- My previous videos on the Sire S3 and the PRS Core Silver Sky got me thinking about whether I could modify my S3 into something of a Silver Sky style guitar.. The S3 lends itself well as a platform for a modified Stratocaster with its great base spec and great build quality. With some help from Lee over at Toltec Pickups, I think I've managed to build a guitar that would give even the Core PRS Silver Sky a run for its money!

could you give me the complete part list (part numbers) for this build? I want to do this exactly. love the sound
Great insight. Thanks for sharing this!
BTW, for a novice guitar player, do you recommend modifying oneself? Is it safe to add these mods without breaking your guitar with basic internet guidance?
This is exactly what I do with all my guitars - I buy a cheap, well made guitar for the bones and add in the pickups and hardware to upgrade. I have a Squier Cv Jazzmaster which I put Toltec pickups in and rewired, put in a new bridge and that is the most phenomenal guitar I have. Lee is amazing and builds quality pickups.
Cool video. Great sounding guitar. I have a modded t7 love it. Nice playing.
Toltec hit it out of the park. Was watching the Intro and was thinking "man..he nailed the sound". And I only have heard/know a few of his tunes. So yeah, good job Toltec!
I’m really pleased with how the pickups sound! Thanks for the kind words! 👍
Lee Laverack is the Man, great luthier and his Toltec pickups are ace. 🎶🎶🎶👌😜
This is exactly what Sire should have done from the beginning, the guitar looks amazing! Great playing dude!
Thank you! Appreciate it!!
Those pickups sound sick! 🔥
We can make you some..or anything you want for all
your pickup needs. Best
@@toltecpickups Outstanding job. I'm rarely impressed by single coil sounds but those sound great!
Great video! I’ve got a sonic mustang in red and I’m looking at slapping strat pickups in it to get that strat sound and I’ve seen these pickups online and am so tempted
Love it! thank you for sharing :)
Thank you!
Hey man, would you mind sharing the name/model of the pickguard you added?
i own a s7 and it’s my favorite guitar
They’re awesome guitars
Dig the mods, and playing. Who needs Custom Shop.
Thanks!!
@@DomHawthornhave you thought of the Sire T3?
for modification? Did your mods get the S3 under 8lbs.
@@jazzsounds8159 I'd love to try the T3, or the T7. I've got 3 teles at the moment though, so unless Sire want to send me one I won't be buying one for a while 😂
The mods didn't really save any weight, it still sits at about 8lbs. I imagine a lot of the weight comes from the steel sustain block. Perhaps swapping this to an aluminium block may save some weight?
Hey Dom, thanks for that, I'm thinking about doing something similar. Sounds brilliant. I see the modded S3 has sprouted a third knob, did you get a prewired pick guard or just drill another hole? Great content, keep up the good work - Mark
Thanks, Mark! I had the SSS pickguard made by a guy on eBay called earlpilanz - so it’s exactly the same size as the original pickguard, but routed for single coils and 3 knobs. The original pickguard was HSS layout with 2 knobs.
I wired up the pickguard from scratch as per a Silver Sky wiring diagram.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks again, Dom
i have both of them PRS Core Silver Sky and Sire s7 Gen 2
for me the sire got better Nick, they both sounds Good and different
and i`m thinking to change the Sire pickups and the Saddle for more sustain
That’s interesting to here! I’m more of a fan of the Sire neck too.
I am thinking of getting the s7 and putting a dimarzio illuminater bridge and Duncan YGM neck and turning off the middle pickup lol
Forgot to ask.. Do you also have the model number of the Gotoh staggered tuners?
Very nice straightforward explanations of your mods.
Thanks! The tuners were the GOTOH SG381 staggered locking tuners
Where can i get pickguards for thr s3 ?
Just curious, if replacing the saddles, is there specific dimensions I should be looking for? I don't have the S3 yet
Hi, just checking in... Now that you have had the S3 for a while, do you notice a difference in the sound/resonance from say an S7 vs S3 since the S3 has a mahogany body and the S7 has an alder body?
Also, I recently purchased an S3. Do you still recommend changing out to the Gotoh locking tuners?
I don’t notice a difference in resonance. And definitely recommended upgrading to staggered locking tuners.
Dom, I am neither as adventurous nor as skilled as yourself. Do you think a set of say Fender American Performer or Seymour Duncan HSS pups would fit without any pick guard, Pot or routing issues? BTW, your Mod sounds fantastic!
Hey, thanks! Any set of HSS pickups should fit without any problems! :)
@@DomHawthorn Thanks
04:19 another reason is there are no lefty silver sky's, so lefties could follow your lead
That’s a good point!
Nice video and upgrade. I understand the dcrew hole pickguard IS the same as a f. Could you confirme me ?
I wanna Say the screw hole pickguard are the same as a fender ?
The Sire pickguard is a slightly different shape to the Fender pickguard. This SSS pickguard was custom made to fit the S3.
@@DomHawthorn the shape is différent but are the holes screws différent ?
The S3 does not come with locking tuners. So where did you buy the staggered height tuners? I wondered about the bridge because I could not tell a visual difference and yes we can by the better saddles. Fender steel saddles are only 30 bucks. That and locking tuners and I'm happey.
The tuners are Gotoh SG381 staggered locking tuners. And the saddles are Gotoh S108 vintage bent steel saddles. The bridge plate and sustain block are standard as these are already high quality items.
Where did you get the scratch plate @domhawthorn , thanks
@@DomHawthorn Great information, thank you. I personally prefer the rosewood fingerboard.
heey this can also be converted to HH right from the looks of it? thanksss!
Yes 👍
@@DomHawthorn nice thank you!
I bought a sire s3. The E and B string sounds really weird in a bad way. Is it because there is no strings trees ?
Yes, most likely. Is it like a weird vibration/buzzy weak kind of sound on the open B and E strings? If so you’ll want to add a string tree or staggered tuners to fix this. Common issue on the S3 due to the shallow headstock angle and lack of string tree.
@@DomHawthorn yes it is more on open string on E and B string . Thanks for the answer. 👍
Do you have the model number of the Gotoh saddles?
GOTOH S108 Bent Steel Saddles
Try BKP Mother's milk.
I use BKP 63 veneer boards in my Fender Strat, they’re awesome pickups. The Mother’s Milk set looks great too.
