  • In this video I take a close look at the Sire Larry Carlton S3, the more affordable S-Type in the lineup. I talk about the features, demo the sounds, play it in a mix, and give my impressions.
    I've reviewed 2 others in the Sire Larry Carlton series, and here are links to those videos.

    Sire seems to keep putting out really nice products for the price point. I used to think the Yamaha Pacifica series had some of the best affordable S type guitars but Sire sure is in the conversation. Great demo sir!

    Hey Leonard, nice video! I absolutely agree with you about the S3 vs the S7. I think that we can all get caught up with getting the highest specification guitar and spend the extra dollar only to find that we didn’t really need them. I haven’t tried an S3 or an S7, but for me, my money is on the Sonic Blue S3. Absolutely loving your work, keep it up! Regards J

    Your playing is terrific. The spacing of the middle pickup is a little odd.

      @leonardgriffieblues5845  4 місяці тому

      Thanks so much. Yeah, I think it looks a little more odd than it is because of the use of the zebra humbucker. I think it’d look a lot better if the humbucker coil colors were switched. I imagine it’s designed to put the outer coil of the humbucker about where a regular Strat bridge pickup would be.

    I have an S7, which a fine guitar that beats its competitors at the same price point. However, I would have preferred a rosewood fingerboard rather than the heavily lacquered roasted maple neck of the S7. Given the opportunity to do it all over again, I would have chosen the S3.

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, the 3 series versions have a more conventional, familiar feel, and the quality seems about the same. Both are nice but I slightly prefer the feel of the S3 and definitely prefer the price! Thanks for watching.

    They are either having supply chain issues with limited options for the 7 series guitars or they are selling like hot cakes... Was lucky to find a mint S7 vintage for $400, and I think that's an even better value proposition.

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Рік тому +1

      You know, I’m pretty sure the dealer did a minor setup (ie: same stuff I do when necessary. Truss rod, action, intonation) so it was right at my preferred 1.5 mm treble and 1.75 mm bass. So long as the fretwork is good, setting the action where you want it shouldn’t be a problem. That’s the key and the fret leveling and crowning was quite good here. Exceptionally so for such an inexpensive model.

    It is easily the best Strat type guitar I have come across. I used to have an American Standard and a Made in Mexico Strat and I still have a Roland Ready Strat. The S3 is easily my favourite. I don't get all the fuss about " oh it must have stainless steel frets and a roasted maple neck" nonsense. That's a relatively recent trend which guitars managed to do without for 70+ years.

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  7 місяців тому

      I completely agree about the stainless steel frets and roasted necks. Many, many long time pros don’t like stainless steel. I’ve reviewed some guitars with them and personally can take em or leave em. They’re fine, but after playing regular nickel frets for about 60 years I’m probably most comfortable with them. Consider this. The Josh Smith model is virtually the only Ibanez from the AZ line without stainless steel. Why do you suppose that is?
      The S3 is indeed a very nice S-type, especially for that kind of money.

      Interesting. That review was a year ago and I haven’t had the guitar for about that long, but I can’t imagine stating that without having checked. No way to know if the one I had was an anomaly but you can clearly hear I’m not getting the full humbucker in position 2. Thanks for watching.

    • @user-zn6gz4ub7w

      @@leonardgriffieblues5845 It's easy to test. In the 2nd position lightly tap one of the magnet on each coil, You can hear it through the amp. I was not trying to be mean.

    • @leonardgriffieblues5845
      @leonardgriffieblues5845  Місяць тому

      @@user-zn6gz4ub7w Yes, I’ve been doing that for decades. It’s possible it’s a tap, not a split, which would still give a signal but it’d be weaker. Again, I no longer have the guitar so I’m in no position to take another look. It’s also possible I read the specs and it sounded that way so I didn’t feel the need to test it. Still, it does not sound like a full humbucker in position 2. I suppose a phase reversal could account for it as well. I’m not saying yours isn’t wired as you say, but I won’t be getting another in my hands to test and see if yours is the anomaly or the one I reviewed.
