This old guy still knows his way around a carburetor, but you've got me outclassed with all this new electronic stuff. Enjoyed this blast from the past.
I have had 4 Toyotas with the 20R/22R engine. Really good, reliable engine. One of them [a Corona] I drove around for about a year with it blowing out excess blue smoke, until I figured out the carb. The exact same diaphragm pump inside the carb had a tear in it and it made me run rich all of the time. Cost me 8 bucks to fix it then it ran like new.
I saw the title to this video and thought someone was looking over my shoulder. I have a 91 22RE that I let sit too long (10 years) the whole fuel system got lacquered I took this one to a mechanic I trust and they fixed it. Now it's time to clean her up and make her look new again. Thanks Peter for the great videos
That laugh after the cold start at 12:41 :) Man had never worked on carbureted engines before but with good old debugging skills and never say no attitude he pulled it off.
Nice logical diagnosis! As someone who has spent many hours inside the Aisin carburetor I would recommend the GP Sorensen rebuild kits as they have period correct kits by year and come with lots of extras. The Walker kits didn't have the correct O-rings for the venturis and the GP Sorensen kits come with extra air horn gaskets when you screw up the throttle linkage the first time and have to go back and redo it correctly. Twice! Lol...I used kit #96-615B on my 1986 Toyota 22R.
I had the exact issue today. 1989 Pickup, difficult cold start. Replaced the acceleration pump diaphragm and blew out the passages. Fired up with one or two pumps. Thanks for pointing me down the right path!
My 83 has this EXACT problem. I'll be checking the sight glass and blowing out the jets like he did in short order! Fingers crossed the fuel is not leaking back past the mechanical pump! Excellent video.
Man, I love how clean your shop is. Thanks so much for posting so many great videos. I enjoy learning while watching you treat these old trucks with respect.
I daily my 1980 Toyota 4x4. It looks completely stock on the outside, but hiding under the hood is big a American V8 that puts a smile on my face when it's time to Go!
Peter, a couple of things the owner should. Clean the body of the carb, replace the vacuum lines and install a inline glass fuel filter, and lastly keep more fuel in the tank. I noticed that level was extremely low pulling all the trash in the tank. Good diagnosis so there's no need to tear down carb...
Thank you so much my brother! You helped me fix my truck and finally got it starting good without having to take off the air cleaner to pour gas into the carb!
Ohw man carburetors....I had my fair share of "fun" with them. All the adjusting screws, springs, needles, listening to the engine, smelling the exhaust for rich mixture...I am not sad cars lost these :)
Great video for all those Toyota carb vehicle owners like me. My 88 corolla has the same type of carb and you must pump it once to start. I haven't had this issue yet due to my yearly carb cleaning maintenance but it's good to know where to look should it ever come up. I want that truck. Wish I could clean it up and give it some Tlc.
I had to subscribe just because of the beautiful manner in which you explained the exact problem my 87 Toyota pick up is having…I look forward to getting in there and doing this tomorrow. I’m positive this is what the issue is. Thank you in advance! And by the way, I am smiling while watching… Very good positive energy you have sir 👍🏽
I think the 22r engine from Toyota is one of the best engines produced by Toyota. I currently own a Lj 78 Toyota landcruiser with a 2LTE engine and it’s ok.
Wow, my 85 4wd looks exactly the same color (and even the passenger door has the same dent!). Same starting problem, that I have always worked around (even after a month of sitting), by repetitively pumping pedal to floor 5 times, then only 2 seconds of starter motor (don't wear it out). If no firing, then do again, until firing and starting, sometimes after 6-8 series of the above. I never wanted to do a carb rebuild, but now I have the simpler solution. Thanks Peter, your are the Greatest!
Thank you, this video was incredibly helpful. My '85 pickup was having this exact problem as well and I was able to resolve the starting problem with your help. Many thanks!
Hello Peter, nice video, just in case,,if your costumer came back to you with the same problem that I hope not ,you have to take out that carburetor and braking in pieces all apart, found some carburetor acid and leave it 24h soaked to remove all the gas gunk that was accumulate for so many years and make a deep inspection inside the gas cup with the glass,,is very common to crack in the bottom but they're so small that it could take a few hours to start leaking..ps..my add is an old school mechanic and he said is a very common symptom on those models
Thanks for doing this vid. I have the same 22r 1990 Toyota. I changed the fuel pump cleaned the tank cleaned the lines. Still doesn't start. But if I spray carb it starts right away. Will keep checking. Also I think it needs to build pressure but I'll check that diaphragm also.
I have a 1987/22R that has this exact problem. My field filter seems to be a weak link in the field system. However this gives me a lot of other things to do also. Thanks for the education, should be pretty easy to follow your bideo!
i think you just solved my problems thank you very much for this video and all your others man you have saved me a lot of time many many times so I just wanted to say thank you!!
crazy....but I could listen to you talk about anything. I assume your having a little fun with your accent.....but it makes the story even more interesting. You had me at diaphragm. I had an option to buy an old corrolla wagon recently w 22R.....for $3500....I passed...but would love to have it for a toy.
Bought a new 1980 Pontiac Firebird TransAm, 42 years ago with a V8 4 barrel carburetor. I know all about these cold starts! Seems pre-historic when I think about it now. Love my 2022 RAV4 Xle.
hey man, i just inherited an ‘84 from my uncle, i’ve rebuilt the carb and it ran well for a little bit but now it’s won’t even idle. i checked the jet using the trick you showed and it sprays, im not a carb expert either but would love to get this thing running.
Great info following same procedure my 1984 22r 5speed stays on extreme high idle only kicks down slightly but not enough help!!! What to look for and possibly do diy.
Wow, another great video Peter! With a bit of cleaning and compressed air you have that 1986 Toyota purring again. 35 years and that little truck is still going. Congratulations in advance as you will soon be at 100K subscribers!👌
Thank you Peter. That truck brought back memories that a friend and I were just chatting about. When we both bought our first Brand New vehicles, they were both '87 4x4 pickups Awesome trucks!
I am glad you reminded us how to start a car with a carburetor. It has been nearly 30+ yyears since I had to do that. I thought I had forgotten. I remember my ‘71 Volare needing lots of attention on the carburetor.
Even before alcohol was in the gasoline, the carburetors would slowly built up gunk and lacquers in the float bowl. Eventually the chunks of it will start plugging up passages and metering jets. What you did was blow the chunk back into the float bowl and it will again find a place to clog up.
I may have found the pesky Asian carb float bowl draining over nite problem....I removed carb, filled float bowl through the vent hose to proper level and worked both accel pumps...the next morning I found fuel leaking out the vacuum hook up for the auxiliary accel pump. Seems there is a pin hole or defect in my new pump diaphragm....Ive been chasing this problem for years and hope Ive found it....at least the fuel is not going down the manifold but is getting in the vacuum line and sucked into the motor. If it still drains I will have to go back to filling the float bowl through the vent line every morning to avoid long cranking when cold.....
Thank you for your content very helpful. I'd like to ask you if you may be able to help me out with what problem I'm having With my Toyota 1982 . I'm not getting any spark I've replaced battery new distributor new cap and rotor new coil and getting nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.
My 22r just got an idle issue, won’t idle on its own, I suspect a clogged port. Very hard to keep a constant idle below 1000rpm with pedal but anything above it runs greats and can easily start and keep it on with pedal.
If you could please help me. I have this same truck just 2WD. I think I may have crossed the Inlet side of the pump line with the return center line. I need a picture of how it's supposed to be installrd. Thank you!!
I owned an 81 4x4, think it had a 20R? 4 speed tranny. White/beige interior TOO! LOVED how high it sat up but a gas hog w/no 5th speed or OD. Give me fuel injectors ANYTIME. ALOT less aggravation. By the way, I THOUGHT the choke wasnt closing enough letting too much air in.🤔
Hey good evening from Jamaica 🇯🇲 New subscriber after watching this video for sure ! I have a 87 giving the same problem started like two months ago , each and every morning it takes like a minute to start even if I give the gas pedal the two are three tap ! As I saw this video I went and took off my carburetor and check the pump thing that’s suppose to release alittle fuel , mine isn’t letting out any So my question really right now is when you get that pump thing off I don’t know the name of it that’s why I call it “pump thing” When I pull it off how do I clean it as you did to that one ? If you don’t mind me asking how you did it so I could follow the steps
I have this same cold start problem with my 86 pickup. In my case I don’t see fuel in the carburetor sightglass, but I do get fuel spray in the carburetor when I push the throttle. Any suggestions on next step for me?
The problem is the check valves in the accelerator pump get stuck and the fuel siphons in to the manifold over nite...You got lucky they are not that easy to fix on really old carbs....if his way doesn't work try compressed air from inside the float bowl to hopefully free the check valve balls....
I'm about to rebuild my carb on an 87 22r. Real uneven idle, gunk all on the butterflies and in the venturi. Lack of power in the power band rpms pretty sure a squeaky clean carb should fix it.
I have the same Toyota Engine 22R it won't start/cranks slowly after I replaced the timing chain and the head gasket. I've set the timing at TDC and the distributor at 11/10. I have tried to adjust the valves per the manual and it cranks really slow. I'm not quite sure what's the issue, it's been a month now.
@Hot Toolsja Yeah the problem was my worn wiring from the distributor to the ignition coil and also I had to replace the starter because it broke during the this entire process....
I own a Toyota Hilux with the 22R engine amd every time l go to start the Hilux a couple of pumps on the accelerater and it starts l learnt this method from another you tuber were he was starting an old VW beetle because l did have a few problems starting my Hilux but now l don't

Toyota # 1
I had the exact issue today. 1989 Pickup, difficult cold start. Replaced the acceleration pump diaphragm and blew out the passages. Fired up with one or two pumps. Thanks for pointing me down the right path!
Peter, Like this truck, I was at my peak in 1986. It looks like the truck is holding up better than I am. :-(
Sorry to hear that, Mr. Hog. But, as you can see, Petr still won't respond.
My 83 has this EXACT problem. I'll be checking the sight glass and blowing out the jets like he did in short order! Fingers crossed the fuel is not leaking back past the mechanical pump! Excellent video.
I started working on Toyota vehicles in the early 1980s. Seeing this old Toyota truck is a real treat. And how wonderful for you to keep it going.
I have a 1987 (original owner) and was having this issue for the first time....stumbled onto your video and fixed it....THANKS!
check valve on the fuel line helped my extended crank issue on my 87 22R! thanks for all your videos !
I worked on carbureted cars with my dad and his friends during my childhood. Thanks for the great video. Love me those carbureted engines.

Thank you for this excellent explanation of why it is so hard to get my little Toyota truck started after it's been sitting for a couple weeks.
Thank you so much my brother! You helped me fix my truck and finally got it starting good without having to take off the air cleaner to pour gas into the carb!
Good old carburetor accelerator pump, that was in my day
great job peter , you show what been a mechanic is all about
nice to see those old trucks still being used
Ohw man carburetors....I had my fair share of "fun" with them. All the adjusting screws, springs, needles, listening to the engine, smelling the exhaust for rich mixture...I am not sad cars lost these :)
My blood pressure rises at the mention of the word carburetor.

Such a simple, beautiful truck.
Simple - yes, but beautiful?! I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all.

Great job sir. You r a genius. These days mechanics don’t mess with carbs.
This is the "PERFECT" truck,ABSOLUTELY SIMPLE,,long bed,4x4,manual,and manual everything inside
Thank you, this video was incredibly helpful. My '85 pickup was having this exact problem as well and I was able to resolve the starting problem with your help. Many thanks!

Excellent.... I have a 91 truck. 22RE. No carb but trying to fix a low power issue.

We used to stock those aadp diaphragms. Simple test was pull off vacuum hose and look for fuel.
That is the same issue my 1983 Toyota pick up seems to have. I will check that out. Thanks for the great tip..
Thank you Peter. Good stuff. Saurkraut time !!!

Thanks for sharing this video, great information provided.
Awesome video Peter! BTW, if no one else below hasn't already stated, it's just pronounced "dia-fram". LOL! Keep up the good work!
Great job, very helpful. many thanks. graham Qld Australia.
Soon, you will hit 100,000 subscribers!! Woohoo!! Great Job on your channel!!👌

Thanks Peter , for sharing this video, old school. , interesting video.
Thanks. I have the same problem with my '83 Toyota pickup.

I love these old Toyotas!
I had an 87 -- I think that was the last year for carburetors on this model.
This is correct for 4WD trucks. But 2WD could be found with carbs all the way up to `95.
I took the carb off mine to rebuild it...that was a couple years ago. Guess I should get it back on. lol😎🇨🇦
Perfect!! My issue-exactly.
Thank you.
I have an 1984 fj60 that’s does this, I had to replace the carburetor and works fine now. It nasty inside and out of adjustment.
Good work Peter!! Diaphragm is pronounced: dia.fram my friend

Nice diagnosis! I loved seeing the dash/instrument cluster! Reminded me of my 1st Taco....an 84. Loved that truck for 275k miles.

This was amazing video.thank you!
Thats the accelerator pump it works to start and to quickly accelerate before the main jets take over when vacumm pulls from lower butterfly
If you could please help me. I have this same truck just 2WD. I think I may have crossed the Inlet side of the pump line with the return center line. I need a picture of how it's supposed to be installrd. Thank you!!

Where can I get one?
Excellent video very interesting blessings
WOW very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
Mine leaks dry overnite. Where does the fuel go? How do I fix it? Thanks for the video.
I have this same cold start problem with my 86 pickup. In my case I don’t see fuel in the carburetor sightglass, but I do get fuel spray in the carburetor when I push the throttle.
Any suggestions on next step for me?
yes, I have the same problem ..... thanks heaps !!!!!
Old skool, 👍😎🇦🇺
Great job my friend
Been rebuilding this type of carbs for 5 yrs now..only 22r and corona carbs.do mods to increase power and improve fuel economy.

Would a pipe cleaner work to clear it. I don't have air.
My carburetor choke remains open even when is cold, can this be the cause for backfire??
Very helpful! Thanks!
I'm about to rebuild my carb on an 87 22r. Real uneven idle, gunk all on the butterflies and in the venturi. Lack of power in the power band rpms pretty sure a squeaky clean carb should fix it.

@Hot Toolsja Yeah the problem was my worn wiring from the distributor to the ignition coil and also I had to replace the starter because it broke during the this entire process....
It takes a few moments to fill the bowl if it sits for days.
👍👍👍
My car stops going down hill and on a sharp turn what do you think?
Peter, I am confused. My 1985 Toyota 4X4 (purchased 10/30/84) came with the 22RE engine with EFI. How does this 1986 truck have a carb?
Because EFI was an option for pickups at that time. 4Runners got EFI standard starting in`85.
I own a Toyota Hilux with the 22R engine amd every time l go to start the Hilux a couple of pumps on the accelerater and it starts l learnt this method from another you tuber were he was starting an old VW beetle because l did have a few problems starting my Hilux but now l don't
What’s you’re thoughts on where to start on a no spark on the same engine
thanks for this video!
Awesome 👍🏽👌🏽
