Having this problem with my 85 4wd. Hopefully I can fix the error using your trials, thank you very much for showing a nice detailed (and to the point) video on this issue
My '86 does this all the time. I've actually soldered the starter relay coil wire back together to fix it originally (which worked for many years). However, it's getting worse. Now, I think I'll have to do this! Great video! Thanks!
Yeah definitely try it out. I left enough wire near the plug end just in case I ever need to take it back to factory. Also hearing of a lot of people using a painless relay.
Just subbed after I’ve been binge watching your vids right now, very helpful! Keep showing more on the 4r please. Really want to hear if you think the sound deadening is worth the trouble. Bout to take my 85 on 2 week road trip and am considering doing it but only if it’s worth the effort cleaning as much as you had to lol thanks
Thanks for checking it out! The sound deadening is worth the trouble in my opinion. I drive my truck more than my 4runner (since I've been rebuilding the trans), and the difference is night and day, really.
Very thorough straight to the point and explained well with step to step procedures. Just sub’d AWESOME work will be watch if all your vids to brush up my skills on the 22re
amazing im having this exact issue and installed a new starter last weekend… sadly the issue persisted. i could throw a bunch of volts into the battery to get the car started, but this should be a reliable fix :)
Yesterday AAA came because of clicking on my 85 Toy pu. He took out a 3ft iron bar, gave the starter a few wacks and she started! I had a long VW bus that had the clicking issue due to so much resistance on the wire. Put a relay next to engine that was wired to battery and starter ….and…..clicking ended! Magic.
Great video and to the point. Not trying to be a d**k here but always stack your high current draw cables closest to the battery post. This ensures you won't burn your smaller ring terminals. Probably doesn't matter in this particular case; just best practice. I'll see myself out.
3 Month Update the Click is is No more,to really simplify this procedure all you are doing is a bypass right to the battery from the black wire with the white stripe with the added 30 amp in line fuse
Hello. Thank you so much for putting this together in a video and for sharing it. I've got the exact same rig but with the dried blood red interior. "Wait!...There's been a slaughter here......." ....Anyway so I just spent all of yesterday rehabilitating the wiper linkage and splicing into the harness at the starter relay connection as you did. Truck started right up like new immediately after. Boy was I stoked. And then....this morning as I gleefully got out to head to my studio.....NOTHING. Like I'd done absolutely nothing the day prior. I turn the key, I hear the rapid clicking of the starter for a brief moment, then all lights go off. Then I wait.....I hear another click somewhere in the engine bay I think.....and then I can try again. Something is opening up to prevent contact....it's staying open for a while.....then it closes...having, I assume, nothing to do with the voltage issue for these model years ('88). If you or anyone can help me understand wtf is going on I'd be grateful. Btw I replaced the starter and solenoid brand new in about 2016 myself and the truck sat parked from that time until Dec 2020. So the starter has seen very little wear....maybe seen 10k miles total. The starter relay I found to be in great condition and that is not where the secondary click is coming from. This is beyond upsetting. Edit: my multimeter proved the exact same current measurements you found on your truck in this video.
if lights are turning off right after you tryin to start, then its a battery issue. im having same problem as guy in this vid currently and my dash lights stay on when trying to crank and I get the click noise. also my truck aint got it but some have a security feature build in that malfunctions and prevents start. might be worth lookin into

Good info, mine occasionally does the same but has no factory relay that I can find. Will have to look into maybe my disconnected neutral safety switch which I believe goes thru the same plug
Got an A/T 1990 3.0L and I'm hoping to add a starter relay on my trip home this weekend and then take it back for work, would love to not have to hotwire the starter contacts in parking lots anymore lol.
Hey I love your video and it was working for my truck for a while now. Just only recently has it gone out again, still getting a click to my starter relay but nothing happens after. Tried to reconnect the main connection to harness and it worked for 1 drive around the block, parked it and didn’t wanna start up again. Was thinking about by passing the relay with another one. What would you suggest?
I'd love to do this on my 2.4L 2wd Toyota Pickup, but I have no idea where to wire into. My starter relay is near the fuse box in the driver side kick panel of the cab, so I'm guessing I need to do it there? I also heard others talking about wiring the crank wire, but I don't know where that is either.
I have a 1991 4Runner with a v6 but I have my starter relay on my interior fuse box by the driver side left foot. I have the same intermitten start issues after replacing starter and battery and relay, how can I do this with my set up?
I have this same issue but it starts after I smack it with a hammer. I assume the starter is faulty in my case, at least I hope so because I’m about to throw a new one in. Guess I’ll find out soon.
When it was having this issue, we're you still getting 12v to the starter signal wire? I'm having the same issue.. and I'm getting 12v at the wire. And I even jumped a 12v from the battery directly to the starter signal. And it just clicks the same
Great video! I literally just did mine over the weekend. I went with the ford bronco relay. Next issue I’m trying to figure out is the bogging during acceleration
@@Oni64 thats wild but awesome you got it! i was suspecting starter also...but got it tested and everything passed flyin colors. sometimes it starters flawlessly. but more times than not...i get click more often.
Hi...I have a 1985 Toyota Celica GTS Convertible that has the same issue. It's been driving me crazy for years. It always happens at the most inopportune times!!! I'm going to try the tests that you've shown with your truck. I'm not that handy with the electrical systems. My question is...where do I find the wire with the 30amp fuse? Did you make that yourself or were you able to purchase that? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
So Im having the one click no crank issue on my 1987 2wd truck. Did all the tests in the vid and also did the wiring from wire straight to positive cable. Still no crank. What would u suggest I chase down next?
When you turn it over could you hear your starter spinning at all? I think I’m having this same issue but was told the relay is working if the starter is spinning. Either this or I got a faulty new starter that’s not fully engaging
Awesome dude! I have an issue but only when it's below 25 degrees. Anything above and it's fine. I'm not a wiring guy and don't know if that would affect the relay or not. It happened this morning before work. Usually I wiggle the starter wiring around but this time i tapped the fuse box, starter relay and the heat sinked box to the left it and it started right up.. maybe this issue?
i would like to know why my 1994 toyota heater will not work after i replaced the thermostat and did a flush on the heater core. still does not work. i checked the control valve and it works fine.

Hello, i hope you can answer my question . my 86 4runner starts right away when the engine is cold. After I run it for about 20 30 min and turn it off for about 20 minutes it will crank 2 or 3 times before it actually starts. Any ideas? Thank you.

Need help!!! I am wondering if someone happened to know where the power wire to the starter leads up to, I have mistaken it for a ground and can not find a video anywhere on it
I have an automatic 1985 Toyota Pickup 22re with turbo that is having a click no crank issue intermittently. I put a new reman starter from O'reilly, new alternator, and new battery. Does anybody know if the 85 pickups have this same wiring issue? I do not see that mine has a starter relay like this 88. Would mine be in a different location or did it not come at all with it?
Has anyone done this on a 1994 dlx? The relay is inside the junction box above the wheel well, so not sure how to approach adding a wire like this. Thanks!
@@lindsey1537 I ended up swapping the starter with a re-manufactured one. Wasn't too difficult of a job and works perfectly now. I believe it was probably just the solenoid that was bad but to save time I just replaced the entire unit. I got a rebate for turning my old starter in as well...
Same with my 94. Just clicks added a old ford solenoid and keeps doing it every 1-2 weeks, give it a quick jump and and engine has issues starting. Nothing to do with the battery seems like it needs a lil more juice To start
i was having the same problem , i removed the ignition switch (not the ignition cylinder) in the back of the ignition switch a screw holding a cable was lose, this is the cable that sends the signal to the ignition rely when you turn the key, and problem solved

Is the same for a 90 v6?
@@joey0077d might be, not sure.
@@RM_Garage ok thank you
Wish my relay was up there. Looks like mines in the starter 1990 Toyota 4x4 22RE
Cable to the starter. Mine did it. Rust corroded it at the starter.
Has anyone done this with a 91 3vze? I’m curious to see how it’s done
Has anyone done this on a 1994 dlx? The relay is inside the junction box above the wheel well, so not sure how to approach adding a wire like this. Thanks!
I don’t think this fix applies to later models
@@RM_Garage Having the exact same issue on my 94 - if anyone out there has a fix let me know!
Also having the same issue with my 94
@@lindsey1537 I ended up swapping the starter with a re-manufactured one.
Wrap splice with rubber electric tape, then cover with heat tubing. Cleaner appearance.
My truck won’t start either. Weird
Because your engine is blown up 😂
Same
i was having the same problem , i removed the ignition switch (not the ignition cylinder) in the back of the ignition switch a screw holding a cable was lose, this is the cable that sends the signal to the ignition rely when you turn the key, and problem solved
