The Jopadhola named the area of Kaberamaido. It means this place is good for groundnuts. Ka means this place in Padhola, ber means good, maido means groundnuts. Kaberamaido is Dhopadhola. The Jopadhola stayed there temporarily during their southward journey. The Jopadhola also gave the Basoga the name of maido which means groundnuts in Lusoga.
Kumam comes from the word Kumo. You "kumo" when you feel sorrow. In old Kenyan Luo, my grandpa's generation, we had a lot of Akumu names. Modern Luos have stuck to the Atieno, Anyango, Adhiambo. Amondi, Achieng and Awuor. The old Luo names are disappearing.
Kumam have a very complex history. I just finished doing a documentary on them. I'll possibly upload it tomorrow. Make sure you watch it. The history has several angles.
Kumam, jopokumu Okumu was the brother of Owiny, kadhirondi, Adhola,Olumi, Rukidi who went to bunyooro etc. So kumam is not even under Luo but they're real Luos because of their ancestor called Okumu.

I've always wanted to say your search about Luo origin will not be complete until you venture outside people who do not identify themselves as Luo, such as the Iteso. These people not only have common origins, but have also had on-and-off contact, continuing to influence each other until at some point it is not easy to tell who has influenced each other more, and which aspect is from, or a vestige of the shared origins, or as a result of the said contact.
I would conclude that the Kumam are an offshoot of the Lang'i whose interactions with the Iteso had an influence in their luo language so much so that they added iteso vocabulary into their language.
I am a Lango! our history tells us that We are Ateker, actually Lango, Karamojong and itesots left Ethiopian Highlands and splitted from karamoja region. How ever we started to adopt much of Luo Culture including some Words because we settled near Acholi.
The thing is luos have very distinct physical features. If one looks like luo, and talk like luo he or she is a luo. This guy is luo. Langos are luo. Suba in kenya are luo today as they look more luo than bantu. If a people overwhelmingly inter marry with luos they become luos and look like luo. There are suba people who look even more luo than your average luo.

I appreciate your works. I believe that we the langi assimilated but i think this whole assimilation started before we even settled in present day northern Uganda. If we really assimilated then some of the langi would be using the Acholi dialect 😂😂. But all langi everywhere speak one language called leb Lango regardless of the geographically locations. The other thing also that I've seen is that the Acholi, Alur , japadhola , and jaluo are similar but the dialects are still different in one way or the other. Have you heard of the Shilluk theory? Some people believe the Lango broke off from them before mixing with Ateker people. This could be a plausible explanation for your confused history. Some might stem from Ateker while others could be Luo, your clans have Ateker names as far as I know.
@@kr3539 The Shilluk theory is a lie. During Obote there was a huge campaign to recruit people in the army therefore they had to drum the message that Langi are Lwo a lot of Lwo language was used. They ended up recruiting more army from the Acoli ethnic group followed by Langi and other ethnic groups. Acoli comprised the most number and they died the most also.
I don't think the Kumam are Lou, but they do speak luo, just like the lango. I actually think these 3 groups, Acholi, Lango and Kumam have some sort of assimilation, like intermarriages.

And one Acoli man would mary many women but within Luo/Lwo clans. There are so many clans in Acoli, you need to do your search properly by going among the people and talk to people.

Am skeptical about this story. I disagree with that retired gentleman. The Kumam ariginated from Lalle, at the Kyoga lake shores. It's from there the the luo and Iteso intermarried to form Kumam. Ku is luo and mam is Teso language. It's from Lalle that the Kumam made an expansion towards lango areas through fights. The Kumams have much linings to Iteso than the Luo, given that almost all the kumam clans are from Iteso, meaning we share the same culture with Iteso. Patrick Oluka.
The Lango and Kumam are assimilated Ateker groups into Luo similar to the Suba . These groups were assimilated Linguistically, Culturally and through intermarriages with the Luo . History of the luo is deep. I would really want to know why luo is so spread out. If they had strong ability to organise themselves and form Kingdoms, I expected them to exist as one big kingdom and not spread out in small groups.

The biggest question is whether you yourself are Luo my friend. Kenyan Luos are no different than the Kumam, the only difference is that our elders lied to us. Why do the Ateso, at least of Kenya, have similar names to Luo?
In Ethiopia we have Anywaa who speak a Luo dialect and their brother also came downwards.Kumam could be their brother.

From the way they count 1 to 10, it seems they were originally Iteso then assimilated by the Lango

Bhar El Gazel is in modern day Chad. I just searched on Google maps. Maybe that's why there are people in Chad who say they are Luo.

Am skeptical about this story. I disagree with that retired gentleman. The Kumam ariginated from Lalle, at the Kyoga lake shores. It's from there the the luo and Iteso intermarried to form Kumam. Ku is luo and mam is Teso language. It's from Lalle that the Kumam made an expansion towards lango areas through fights. The Kumams have much linings to Iteso than the Luo, given that almost all the kumam clans are from Iteso, meaning we share the same culture with Iteso. Patrick Oluka.

The Lango and Kumam are assimilated Ateker groups into Luo similar to the Suba . These groups were assimilated Linguistically, Culturally and through intermarriages with the Luo . The Luo-Babito Kingdom lasted 400-500 years and was ended by Uganda government in 1967 and officially 1971 after Idi Amin coup against Milton Obote .

History of the luo is deep. I would really want to know why luo is so spread out. If they had strong ability to organise themselves and form Kingdoms, I expected them to exist as one big kingdom and not spread out in small groups.

Some present day Lango still claim their original identity while others prefer their present day assimilated Luo identity . Similar to the Suba and other assimilated Luo groups .
Present day DNA reveal admixtures similar to the Banyarwanda who have predominant Niger-Congo Bantu DNA associated with the Banyarwanda hutu and variations of Nilotic/Nilo-Saharan/Nilo-Cushitic DNA associated with Banyarwanda tutsi .
The biggest question is whether you yourself are Luo my friend. Kenyan Luos are no different than the Kumam, the only difference is that our elders lied to us. Impossible, like any tribe there is admixture through intermarriage/assimilation but to say that the whole community is assimilated would mean that we're all of Bantu/Cushitic descent. I personally don't look like a Luo, I'm brown skinned and taller than the average Luo in Kenya (6'1"). There's been times where people have mistaken me for a Rwandan, Ethiopian or Somali but I just assumed it was due to admixture. Turns out I'm not even descended from a Nilotic man + carry very little Nilotic ancestry.

None of these people have their clans among the Luo/Lwo groups. All clans of Lango, Kumam and Teso are none of these are in Lwo/Luo nor lwo language. I'm already waiting on my own results lol, need to make sure I'm not descended from a jamua. You never know with Kenyan Luos, we're all mixed. Since I came back from Gulu I've noticed that a lot of Joluo look more like bantus. I've been told I look Rwandan because my skin is light and I'm tall.

Kumam, jopokumu Okumu was the brother of Owiny, kadhirondi, Adhola,Olumi, Rukidi who went to bunyooro etc.
So kumam is not even under Luo but they're real Luos because of their ancestor called Okumu.
