I agree about the importance of the Yorktown class carriers. The Enterprise definitely should have been preserved as a museum ship, not not have ended up in a scrap yard.

Thanks for the great review. I stumbled upon the tamiya yorktown today at my local hobbystore for just $11.00!!! I got flashbacks from watching the old "battle of midway" movie as a kid with Charleston Heston. So i grabbed her and made her mine. I still cant believe i got this kit so cheap. I cant wait to build her.

Love the Yorktown Class, especially USS Yorktown CV-5 herself....a bit USS Yorktown CV-5 (and CV-10) and USS Coral Sea CV-43 obsessed! 😉
I've got the Merit 1/350 version and eagerly waiting for the one in 1/200!
    Great video! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻

I just finished with the Tamiya Yorktown model. I finished the Trumpeter Lexington last week and I must say the Yorktown was way easier to put together, in fact I'll probably need to to Lexington again. That said it's been 20 years since I put together a model and I'm more of a casual modeler as opposed to a real hobby for me. I've had an interest in WWII all my life and I recently met a man who was a gunner on the Enterprise in the Doolittle and Midway fights, and I believe Guadalcanal but I'm not sure. So meeting him sparked my interest in doing these carriers. I have the Trumpeter Hornet in the box ready to start and a Tamiya Enterprise hopefully on the way, hard to find that one. Despite your pet peeve about the Enterprise being morphed, I'm glad it's the CV-6 and in the right era, other Enterprise's I find are the CVN-65, so happy I get pretty much the original. Great video, sir. Hope to see a posted video of the finished products!

Yorktown class carriers are the best! My favorite one was the USS Hornet CV-8.

Would the Yorktown kit make a better Enterprise than the Enterprise given it has been updated?

The DML 1/700 CVN-65 probably ran into issues like proper length and width. Can't understand why it's been cancelled/delayed since it's announcement over five years ago. Trumpeter released their CVN-68, but it has severe scaling issues with their details, mainly the deck tie downs scaling to manholes.

You think Tamiya planes are bad - you should try wrestling with one of the old Aoshima 1/700 kits. Those planes are worse than useless! (To say nothing of the Aoshima kits in general). But back in the 70s the different companies seemingly divvied up the fleets and what you saw was what you got. Nobody even THOUGHT about releasing a Katori, for example, because Aoshima already had. No matter how bad it was.

you've got a lot of knowledge about the finer details of these carriers . I gather the US Navy had to borrow a RN carrier before the Essex carriers were ready . After that the US navy became unstoppable .

For some odd reason the USA enterprise is the most popular in in Melbourne Australia

Yes, the Enterprise is the best seller of the three... The Enterprise received a PUC her sisters didn't. Never-the-less I prefer a Essex class carrier...
