CV-6 Full Build

- This is the twenty fifth and last installment of my build of the CV-6 USS Enterprise. In this video I am going through the entire build process, adding the final detailing and showing the end product.
The build is based on the Trumpeter 03712 kit with detail up sets from Pontos and KA-models; trying to use the best of both sets.

My father was a TBM Avenger torpedo pilot on Enterprise late 1944- May 1945. He was a member of the very first squadron to fly low level attack missions from an aircraft carrier at night and in foul weather. He was a member of Night Torpedo Squadron 90. I have the Big E card in my wallet today as she had such a huge impact on my life. I followed my dad as pilot and flew for United Airlines for 29 years. All thanks to the USS Enterprise!
Wow! I have read about those missions. Real daredevils and heroes!
Heroes is such an overused word. I would say he was a great guy!
My dad, too, flew from the Big E as a fighter pilot in VF-10 in '43 and '44. Including raid on Truk Island. I built him several models of enterprise over the years. Nothing as incredible as this one. He would have absolutely loved seeing this as well.
@@sharpiesailor Thanks to your dad for his service! Thank you for the compliment!
Absolutely amazing. The figures pull it all together. The two sailors at the starboard stern give the full perspective of how enormous this ship was. All the crews around the parked aircraft is so balanced and well planned out. Simply stunning model Kenneth. We’ll done, sir.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I have tried to make it realistic with the different crew members doing their jobs around the different planes, so I am glad to hear that this is how you perceive it as well :-D
Truly amazing! Without a doubt the work of a true artist!
Thank you so much for those kind words! :-D
That was fascinating watching the build. Your mastery of PE is second to none. Can’t wait for BB63 and your next museum quality build.
Anytime I see you’ve posted a video it makes my day.
Thank you so much for the kind words! It makes me really happy to hear that :-D
Thanks for sharing your beautiful build with us! Very inspiring. I picked up several great tips to use on my projects. Congratulations and I’m already looking forward to your next series!
Thank you! Great to hear that I have been able to give some tips during the build 😀
Absolute work of art! Models are the closest we will ever get to seeing the Big E and builds like yours, I feel, definitely do justice to the real ship! Keep up the awesome work!
Oh thank you very much for those motivating words 😀
The grey ghost would be proud.
From start to finish is a work of art. Your attention to detail is very impressive. Don't stop the videos. Thank You.
Thank you! I’m not, just trying to figure out whats most appreciated;build logs, full build videos or both?
Congratulations on a fantastic build, absolutely beautiful
Thank you so much 😊
Absolutely masterpiece! Only one doubt: shouldn't be better adding more waves effects after the first one?
Thank you! You might be right… it’s a learning process for sure, so improving (I think) each time I make one.
Extremely impressive model …. The work you put into each individual aircraft, and each figure is well worth the effort . I have been working on USS Intrepid in her jet age modernization configuration for the last year and know how much work goes into a project like this . I can only hope she comes out half way as nice. I am jealous of your skill and patience. Thank you for sharing !
Thank you Tony! I love those final touches, and the phase where it all comes together. The hours are all worth it, and enjoyable. I bet you will get a great result as well. Good luck 👍 Thank you for the kind words!
Saw the original ship when I was a kid - at the Brooklyn NY Navy Yard - before she was scrapped. Your finished model really does her justice. Well done Kenneth.
Thank you so much for saying that Walter 😀 I am so pleased hearing that from someone that has actually seen her in real life 😊
congratulations ! this is a piece of art ! really I m not a pro diorama indeed but your weathering is just incredible ...... Characters give another dimension to the build. Bravo looking forward to sseeing your next project .
Thank you for the kind words 😀 Glad you liked it 👍
The model looks amazing! I really like watching your build from start to finish. Thank you very much for sharing your build, Kenneth
Thank you very much Loren! Great to hear that you like the build log installments as well :-)
Holy moly, that is some serious modelling skills you have on show! Incredible result after all that hard work! Bra jobbat!
Thank you so much 😀It has taken it's time, but all worth it. Takk!
@@NorwegianModellingBench thanks for the reply! I live in Stockholm, så tack så mycket och verkligen strålande resultat! Imponerande!
@@soppdrake Tusen takk 🙂
Hi I am Kevin and I am on the CV-8 Hornet I would like to know the size of the men and were you got them from I am from New Brunswick Canada. Thanks for help.
Hi. The crew came from KA and ION. Since they are in 1/200 scale that should be around 9 mm.
What a phenomenal build Kenneth! It looks like the Big E out on Patrol in the Pacific in a 1/200 scale. I can't wait until the next build. I hope it is either the Billy Mitchell Bomber or that Joyard USS Montana. Have a great Sunday my friend!
Thank you Jeremy! I’m sorry but it will be BB-63 😉 Have an awesome Sunday my friend!
@@NorwegianModellingBench No problem Kenneth. The Missouri will be a great build as well. Who is the manufacturer and what scale is the kit. I am working as I type on the F4U Corsair. I will send you pictures. Have a great day!
@@jeremymishefske1754 It is the Hobbyboss 1/350 kit with a Pontos detail up set.
Beautifully done!!
The younger sister to my all-time favourite ship, USS Yorktown CV-5!
Got her in 1/350 and 1/200 and USS Yorktown CV-10 1/350!
Tempted to do her (CV-5) in a camouflage, the way that she might have looked like, had she not been sunk at Midway....
Thank you! Sounds like you have a couple of great projects at hand. Not sure which measure she wore at Midway though...
You did a nice job building the model, the paint job looks nice as well as the weathering, and your water work is really good. However, a carrier even at its slowest speed would still be moving too fast for a captain's gig to catch up with it. And a carrier would not be underway for a captain's gig to pull up next to it. The ship would come to a full stop and lower the gangway for a whale boat, a captain's gig or admirals barge, or even a motor launch to come alongside and come aboard. Transfers at sea we're usually handled by attaching a line between the two ships while they're underway, the same way un-reps is done ,and a bosun's chair attached to them, and then hoisted across to the other ship.
Thank you, glad you think so 😊 I am well aware that it isn’t realistic, but I allowed myself a bit of artistic freedom on that one to make it a bit more interesting. But thanks for the thorough explanation 👍
I am respecting you that you are building this model kit of best american Aircraft carier
Thanls 😊
You have done an absolutely amazing job on this. I will definitely be rewatching this series when I get around to building mine. Did you 3D print your own figures, or are they the Trumpeter ones?
Thank you so much! The figures are from ION-model and KA. I don't have a 3D printer yet, can't afford the model that I would like.
@@NorwegianModellingBench thanks I will check them out.
I am honestly blown away at the level of detail you achieved. She looks like she’s underway & prepping for flight ops! Outstanding workmanship.
If I could nitpick one thing, and it’s the ONLY thing I’ve noticed… at the stern, where the ships name is painted. From memory the letters are painted darker than the hull, almost - if not black. Because it has to be highlighted in order to be visible.
Fantastic job celebrating the great CV-6 USS Enterprise. The ‘Big E’. Wonderful work! 🫡
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Regarding the ships name; I actually tried to find pictures of how it looked, but in all the pictures I saw the letters had the same color as the hull. You might be right that it was highlighted, but I found no proof of it. Maybe it should not be that visible for the enemy. I don't know.
Thank you for your input! :)
My problem is cost. How much is the overall price of kit and extras?
All in all I have used around USD 2000 on it. If you divide that with the number of hours spent, it is actually quite a cheap hobby per hour ;-)
Absolutely beautiful work ! Thanks for making all of your videos. My hull is sitting in my Andrew 3D stand waiting for me to start.
Thank you, hope they will help you in your build 😊 Good luck!
Great job love the finish and the water to I have just got this kit what a big build it is going to be when I am going to start my one if I need to ask you a question when i am building it if I get stuck if that is ok I have just subscribed to you to
Thank you and welcome to my channel! I will certainly try to give you answers if I am able to. Please take a look at all the build installments, and enjoy your build!
Fantastic job Kenneth so inspiring it's a pleasure to watch you build
Thank you so much David for the kind words 😁
I don't normally comment on youtube videos but had to say that this build is absolutely stunning, very admirable work, thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for the kind words 😊
Kenneth this build turned out absolutely amazing. I just hope I can do at least half as well as you did on yours. When I do start my big E, I'll be using your build as reference and inspiration. Well done.
Thank you so much Robert 😊 I bet you can! Great to hear that it can be a reference and an inspiration 😁 Good luck with your build!
Hi, This is a fantastic build, thank you for showing.
Thank you! Glad you liked it :-D
The very aft of a ship is called the fantail. The bow is called focal.
Okay, thanks for the clarification :-)
Bravo Zulu on an excellent build and presentation. Looking forward to more of your builds. I hope you enjoyed the build because that is the purpose of the model.
Thank you! I have thoroughly enjoyed it 😁 As you say, that is the purpose, and I do. As for the channel I am not sure if it is worth the extra hours. I do like to share, and hopefully I will inspire and motivate others.
Enterprise CV6 had 23 battle stars.
Okay :-)
She's a beauty Ken!! You must be so proud!! Can I take some screenshots and give you a shout out?
Thank you so much Nigel! I am happy with the results, but as always, I could have done better ;-) Always learning. Please do, I would appreciate that Nigel.
I absolutely love the shadows in "Vultures Row". The Sailor pushing on the wing of the aircraft on the elevator. The staging of all the personnel on the flight deck The weathering of the ship made your creation...visceral. As a former Navy Quartermaster of the US Navy in the Cold War....I salute your interpretation of the freedom that all people of the world should have.
Thank you very much for the kind words, and I love that you have observed what I have tried to depict. Stay safe!
If getting one pe set which one is better pontos or KA
Pontos for sure.
Gees Kenneth amazing work on the CV-6 Enterprise built, l've started my build now & all going good so far, l'm using your videos for reference material, and your tips & tricks along the way😊 you have mention. I also visited (Bunker Studio) site to purchase the guns you mention to add to my build. Thanks again for all your great work you put into your model build videos and sharing with your subscribers. Can't wait to see what you pick out for your next build. Happy Modelling Kenneth 👍😊 cheers Daryl
Thanks Daryl :-) Great to hear that my videos are helpful during your build! Thanks for the kind words, and I have started my BB-63 1/350 build. I guess the first video will be up in a couple of weeks. Have a great one!
from start to finish, i have anticipated each new segment. Kenneth you are a master at shipbuilding and I can't wait to see what is next on your build list. By the way, congrats, you are ever closer to that 2 thousand subscribers and you deserve many more
Thank you Ralph, and again thank you for the support! Getting close for sure, but not gaining the traction I want. Not sure what I do wrong 🤷♂️ Next up will be the BB-63 1/350 😀
@@NorwegianModellingBench It takes time Kenneth, your channel has gained a lot of support this past year and your reputation is one of the best.Your name comes up constantly by some of the best builders on you tube. I remember you saying this when the channel first started. Look forward to theBB63 as i am doing the New Jersey and as sister ships your input will be much appreciated
@@ralphford4302 You are right, it takes time, but just wondering how I can improve or what I do wrong. Well well, let’s see how it pans out. Do you think I should continue with build “log” videos or just “full builds”? Thank you for the support 😊
@@NorwegianModellingBench Kenneth, I think full builds could never show what it really takes to build such a complicated kit, maybe a quick out of the box build, but never with the all the photo-etch. (why would i want to miss the beautiful photo-etch work on the port, starboard sides, bow and stern) So logs are my choice. I have however, recently seen builders at the end of the project going back and creating an edited full build for those who prefer that format
@@ralphford4302 I totally agree, that’s why I have made them. I have tried to make a channel that I want to follow. Well, I tried to make a full build with this one, but maybe I cut it too short.
I started building models circa 1952, so I've seen a few. Yours of Enterprise makes me think you must have made a Faustian pact to be given that level of skills! (Plus extraordinary patience and commitment.) So, thanks for showing us what's achievable.
😂 I have not made a Faustian pact, but thank you so much for the very kind words 😁 Great to hear that my builds can be of inspiration 😊 I am humbled!
Wow wow wow...I bow to your talents...🚣🚣🚣🚤🚤
Thank you very much :-D
Absolutely magnificent work, gorgeous execution. I’ve been building large scratch-built ships going on fifty years, and I’ll tell you-I am humbled. This made me subscribe because now I want to see all that you’ve done.
Please keep building and post all the details. My abilities are much less than they were, so I’ll never build this vessel. I’m getting older and sick, but watching this is almost as good as making one of my own.
I consider you a master model maker, and I hope I have time enough to see more of your beautiful work.
Vær så snill og hold deg frisk, og takk!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I must say you touched me. I am glad to hear that watching my builds is almost as good as making one yourself, but sad to hear that you are not feeling well and that your abilities are diminishing. Tusen takk! Stay safe and healthy!
Zbudowałem kiedyś taki lotniskowiec z papieru. Nie wyglądał tak spektakularnie jak ten. Ilość szczegółów jest niesamowita.
Thank you very much 😊 It must have been a challenge to build it in paper.
Hi, I am building a 1/72 RC scratch-build of the Enterprise(after 1943 mods). I would like to communicate with you. I have completed the hull and internals, hangar deck and the base of the flight deck. i like that you have actually painted the Enterprise the correct USN colours. Most of the Enterprise models I see are grey and unfortunately incorrect. Yours is a brilliant model.
Thanks! There is a lot of debate about the measure it was painted in, but I took a choice and what I believed in, and this is my result. Which I am happy about :-) How can I be of help?
I just stumbled across your channel , I like the work / videos you are putting out. Very informative & educational. Where did you get your ship holder/stand.
The 1 I have is very cheaply made. I'd like to get a different 1 but I haven't found the rite 1 , yet anyways.
Thanks for the videos
Thank you and welcome to my channel 😊 The ship stands are bought from Andrew3D.net, say that you subscribe to my channel and you will get a discount 😉
Absolutely stunning work, so much detail going on. The Pontos PE set looks amazing and you did it justice. I hope you don't mind I linked one of your earlier videos about the E6000 glue in my latest video as I used it for the first time after seeing your use. Sorry, I referred to you as the Norwegian Modelling Bench guy as didn't realised your name is Kenneth until now😐
Thank you 😊 Great to hear that I did it justice 😁 Of course, no problem at all, I love that tips and tricks are shared, and no worries that you didn’t know my name 😉
I think your build is magnificent. While all that brass PE was spectacular, I REALLY like how your flight deck turned out. It really sets off the entire model.
Thank you Mark, great to hear that you like it 😊 I am very happy with the flight deck as well 😀
Outstanding work Kenneth , Thank You for sharing your building journey. what's next on the building docks?
Hope you have a great week, Cheers, Tony
Thank you very much Tony 😊 Cleaning the bench atm; next up is BB-63 1/350 😁
Dear Kenneth,
I am not sure that I can add anything to the previously added comments which say everything.
Well done!
Regards,
Z
Thanks Z, all the comments are highly appreciated 😀
That’s just an unbelievable build! Congratulations. Since perfection seems to be your goal, could I dare to make a suggestion? The water looked very realistic. But the ONE bow wave that emanated from the ship is not realistic. Several waves of varying intensity occur. But the way you presented the water seemed very realistic. Absolutely incredible.
Thank you very much Paul for those kind words 😊 I would agree with you in general on that one, but l used a reference photo from the CV-6, and it had only one bow wave.
This kit can’t be built out of the box. The ultra expensive Mk.1 photo-etch has to be apart of the build. With that said, no fucking way will I ever dish-out $1000.00 to build a plastic model. How low has this hobby gone too?
The good thing, it is always your choice. You can make a good OOB with the Trumpeter kit, but if you want to take it up a level, well then in this case you have to do extra aftermarket kit investments. If you buy kits like those from Joy-yard, everything is in the kit, but yes it is expensive if you look at the total investment. BUT then again it is not if you look at the number of hours of fun work. Like me for the CV-6, I probably spent like $1500 in extra sets etc, but that comes down to like $1 per hour of build, so in my head it is totally fine.
Amazing work, especially on the photo-etch and aircraft. Just some input from an old Sailor (Senior Chief Ret), you need some more figures on the fantail with brooms acting like they are actually working.
Thank you very much! :-) Maybe I should have, but then again, I felt like I had painted enough figures ;-)
CV-6, The Luck E, The Gray Ghost and the Big E. A major player in destroying the IJN.
As we say in Norwegian "A loved child has many names" :-)
Beautiful build! Thanks for the show, well worth the time to watch. I have 2 comments from a historian for future builds. 1: All aircraft were armed, fueled and the engines warmed up and tested in the hanger. Loose bombs and torpedoes were forbidden on the flight deck. 2: Spare aircraft were hung from the ceiling in the hanger to replace aircraft too damaged to be repaired.
I hope you don't think I'm being too critical, I'm just imparting knowledge for future reference.
Thank you Robert! I am aware of your points, but how interesting would that be to look at? So I used my artistic license, and tried to make something that would be interesting to look at. Thanks for your insight!
Just found your channel via Paul over at Plastic Monkey. I have now subscribed. Great channel and I think you have elements that I get inspiration from to add into my own channel. Your model building is amazing! I plan to go back and watch all of your videos on at least this build.

Nigel has really been nice to me, I have to say. Great to hear that you loved them, thank you so much!
I almost picked up this size scale model of the USS Enterprise CV-6, and I would have really loved to try to put it together. But I also realize that my skills are not up to par and I really couldn't do this justice like you have

You created a beautiful model I just subscribed to your channel and plan to watch your whole build of this kit! I was in the navy and my first ship stopped in Arendal for a week Norway is a beautiful country. I live only 40 miles from th
Thank you and welcome to my channel :-) Arendal is a nice city, but Bergen is nicer ;-) Hope you will enjoy!
Generally a good build as far as it goes. However, why do I see an enlisted sailor saluting another enlisted sailor at the stern starboard side? Also the Captain's gig would NEVER attempt to catch up to the boarding ladder while the ship is underway. The bulkheads inside the hanger appear to need more detail, such as equipment, piping, etc.
Sorry that it wasn’t to your liking…
Very nicely done!
Thank you 😊
Nice but Devestators were withdrawn from service before the first 40mm Bofors were fitted to any US navy ship
Thanks, do you have a source?
Very nice. A work of a true master modeler. Such detail. Outstanding!

Beautiful work. Amazingly realistic.

Absolutely love your build. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Steve 😊
Awesome job I wish I had 1/10th the skill you have. I'm working on it
Thank you very much 😊 It is a continuous learning process, so keep at it, and good luck 👍
Great summary of an outstanding build. The indexes to relevant videos are very nice.

Sir how did you get the lights for the hanger deck i would love to do this the next time i make this kit what are the materials you used ?
Hi. I covered some of that work in the Hangar Deck installment. It is just a regular LED strip that I cut and soldered wires to. I hope it helps you.
Looks amazing same as your other builds, it has been along time in the making but all your work has definitely paid off, looking forward to you next build LPD-2 USS Essex 😉 try and find a in depth build of a Wasp class LPD on you tube
Thanks Craig 😁 I hate to disappoint, but it will be the BB-63 1/350. Waiting for some extra parts I want to use for the Essex.
@NorwegianModellingBench the Missouri the hobby boss kit you reviewed months ago ? i can live with that 🙂
@@craigmorrice6032 Correct, good to hear 😉
Very impressive . How long did it take you to build ?
Thank you! In calendar time, a year. I have used somewhere around 1000-1200 hours on it I would guess.
Stunning, not much more to say then absolutely stunning 🤩
Thank you very much 😁
What a fantastic model ...i will never get close to achieving that level of detail .
Enjoyed watching the entire build series .
Would love to see you build a mordern carrier...
Again absolutely awsome
👍👍😊
Thank you very much, I am glad to hear that you did😀 A modern carrier is on my plan to build next year 😉
@NorwegianModellingBench
Just wondering have you a favourite kit manufacturer and if so why.
My go to is Trumperter because of the pure number of ships they produce ...tho tooling and quality for me has been tamiya, but I have to say I've just started collecting TAKOM and their mordern warship series they have only produced two i believe but I'm really liking the quailty..
I would like to hear your opinions please.
Now that is a difficult question. As you say there are different pros and cons to each vendor; packaging, fit, selection, instructions, plastic quality, level of detail etc etc. I have usually found an object that I would like to build, then looked at the possible vendors and aftermarket options.
That is exceptional work!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely amazing, wow
Thank you 😊
Wow!! Just wow!!!! I am absolutely speechless on how beautiful of a job you did.... Absolutely museum quality amazing!! 🇺🇸👍
Thank you so much for the kind words, I highly appreciate it 😊
Love your work mate. I am currently working on the 1/200 Hornet CV-8 and your series on this build has really helped and inspired me. Keep up the great work. Look forward to your next build.
Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate hearing that the work has been an inspiration and helpful in your build. That is my goal and purpose of the channel. Good luck with your build!
I agree with other comments regarding the addition of crew members, it makes such a huge difference to the way the finished ship is appreciated by viewers. BRAVO !! Great skills and great English, 😉 thank you.
Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind words 😊
probably been said already...but unbelievable

WOW!!! Beautiful work. Adding the base and figures really gives it a sense of realism. Great job! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! That was my thinking, trying to get the model to "live".
great build thanks for sharing!

Awesome work my friend keep up the good work 👍

Simply amazing build! Hard to believe that this ship , which arguably could be considered one of, if not the most important ship in world history for what it accomplished, was scrapped.
Thank you 😊 Yes it is a shame 😔
My dad served on the Big "E" during the war. He saw all the action and shared a few. He retired from the Navy after 33 years of service. Thank you for building the symbol of the past with so much reverence.
Thanks to your father for his service! We owe so much to so few. It was a pleasure and honor.
