      @@BritanyBinges Bernard Cribbins was part of UK TV all my life until his passing. He was never anything less than delightful in everything he did. New Who was not his first foray with the Doctor. He starred in the 1966 movie 'Dalek Invasion Earth 2150AD which transfixed me as a child at the cinema, obsessed as I was (like all kids back then) with all things 'Dalek'. This was the second of two movies that starred Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars) as The Doctor.

    "I can still die. If I'm killed before regeneration, then I'm dead. Even then, even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead."
    I think that each Doctor has their own view and opinion about regeneration. Some accept it, some don't, and some are in between with it.
    Here, I feel like we see how the 10th Doctor views regeneration. He clearly doesn't accept it and doesn't want to. He still considers it dying, and when he does change, that version of him will be over. 😥😥
    Such an amazing and emotional scene. David and Bernard did an incredible job. I love scenes with The Doctor and Wilf.

    Tennant's run has two of the best "To. Be. Continued"s in the show for me (this is 10's second best i'd say, after the end of "The Stolen Earth", where even in our behind-the-scenes filled internet age I genuinely wondered if they'd somehow snuck a surprise regeneration past everyone).
    Plus, Timothy Dalton ! And John Simm on fine, utterly bonkers form. And Wilfred... ah, words don't suffice. Such a wonderful character. Kind of a spare grandad for any Who fan that needs one :).

    I remember back in 2009/2010, the cafe scene was quite divisive. Like you had:
    some classic era fans weren't a fan of the Doctor describing regeneration as "some new man goes sauntering away" considering he's regenerated many times + how in Tennant said in Christmas Invasion "I'm him, literally I'm him; same man, new face, well new everything",
    other fans saw the scene as giving the next Doctor & next production crew an even steeper challenge than they would've had anyway, before they started.
    Then there were some fans who liked it, saying its Doctor being completely honest about regeneration to Wilf.
    With the Vinvocci, originally they were just gonna have green hands & spikes but actor's faces. Then RTD changed his mind & then the Vinvocci had the actors faces cgi'd green later.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 Місяць тому +2

      I liked it personally because they always have been the same _and_ different (each Doctor has had their own style, even in Classic Who). Even with Tennant in "The Christmas Invasion" he's very clearly on a journey of self-discovery post-regeneration, has the speech about "What sort of man am I ?" etc. so to me the idea that "some new man goes sauntering away" is perfectly justified in the show. He _is_ the "same man" _and_ he has "new everything".
      (i've long seen it as a take on the nature/nurture idea in that it's the same person in a different body which means different genes, hormones etc. and so different responses to events - some of how we react to things is just body chemistry and each Doctor's is different, which in practical terms gives each actor room to make the role their own)

      @@anonymes2884 yeah and tbf many Doctors (classic and Revival) have alluded to it being death before regenerating as well. But also that rebirth (geniunally think Whittaker Doctor worded it best getting that balance of regeneration=death & rebirth).
      Like guess the best equivalent to what regeneration would hypothetically feel like, would be that feeling you get after holding your breath for as long as you can and then breathing again. But like that analogy doesn't exactly match and is bit of a weird one in the first place.
      Back in December 2009/January 2010, I'd have been 8 & been watching since 2005, but like had been introduced to classic who as well, so think I was more in the steep hurdle & Tennant Doctor wearing his feelings on his sleeve rather than hiding them, because it's Wilf camps.
      And even then future context has added to it e.g confirming the Meta-crisis counted meaning the next time the Doctor regenerated would've/by all probabilities should've been the last. Plus this Doctor, didn't have much time compared to the others. And then even less time especially if you count it as two incarnations:
      TennantA(Bad Wolf/Parting Of The Ways- Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journey's End(specifically Turn Left/The Stolen Earth))
      TennantB (Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journey's End (specifically Journeys End)-The End Of Time)

    • @dylancole1910
      @dylancole1910 Місяць тому +1

      I see it as both. A death and a beginning. Rebirth, reincarnation. He literally is the same man at his core and although some personality traits may change and his appearance also it’s still him, with the same memories and experiences. Ten said that despite being the same man it felt like dying, he didn’t say it WAS death. He also said that everything he was dies, of course we know that’s not true by now but he was talking about core personality traits. I think it’s valid for someone who changes as often as he does to feel that way even though ultimately his values will still remain the same, or very similar across every incarnation.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 Місяць тому +1

      @@elliottnoad1270 I think it's reasonably explicit that it's two regenerations but only _one_ incarnation (10 just uses a regeneration to heal himself _as_ 10) so personally I don't see a split as very meaningful. But yeah, assuming you mean it as "in-universe life lived" then true, 10 is almost certainly the youngest by a wide margin which might explain his feelings about death if that's what you're driving at (though of course somewhat ironically, in terms of _episodes_ 10 is the longest running nuWho Doctor).
      And I agree about Whittaker too BTW - her run isn't top of my list by any means (mostly nothing to do with her, I thought she was good and _could_ have been great with better writing) but 13's _end scene_ might be my favourite of all. She struck exactly the right balance of wistful melancholy and forward looking optimism. Lovely moment.

      @@anonymes2884 yeah meant in universe, like Eccleston Doctor said he's 900 (whether Vampire Science or Time War or simply forgetting/lying) in Aliens Of London/World War Three & the show sticks with it, then by Voyage Of The Damned, he's 904 & by this point 906. meaning all of the TV, all the expanded universe & expanded universe stuff yet to come, took place in the better part of 6 years (nearly 7 based on Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone).
      With the RTD1 Tennant Doctor being 1 incarnation or 2
      I remember reading a Tennant Doctor Titan comic, I got in a Humble Bundle & it was The Fountain Of Forever (or The Forever Fountain?) which had Tennant degenerate/retro-regenerate to Eccleston by having his time rewound (and later wonder, when he'd gone back to Tennant, about his amount of regenerations). And with Smith Doctor being the out of regenerations and saying, thinking, Tennant defo counts twice then.
      But then I guess, the flaw with that is that Tennant plays the role (during RTD1) the same and any personality changes (e.g Time Lord Victorious), can just as easily be chalked up to being a result of his adventures anyway.
      e.g the Masters Death, leaving him the last Timelord (outside the Timelock) in Utopia/The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Timelords + saving Caecillius' family in Fires Of Pompeii working out for him + Jackson Lake getting London thanking him for stopping the Cyber King destroying London, in The Next Doctor = end of Waters Of Mars and Time Lord Victorious. Rather than the Meta-Crisis regeneration slightly rewiring the brain, which then equals Time Lord Victorious anyway).

    The foreshadowing is great. Torchwood well it's gone. These two episodes present the Donna moments well yet the latest episodes barely do and that annoyed me so much. Part 1 is something alright of the Billionaire, the Master return with the leftover to summon him. Lucy. Wilfred gets a good continuation. The Time Lords it's all so good. Part 2 the one scene is so great the tension. The ones surrounded by the Doctor or the radiation booth. The many Masters is so funny. You will find out even if many episodes ahead now but yep for your past self yep you will find out.
    The Slyvia moment is so funny. Why wouldn't Wilfred go with him.

    It's a great episode but my only nitpick was the scene at the cafe between the Doctor and Wilfred explaining to him about "regeneration" and saying to him "even when i change it feels like dying, everything i am dies, some new man goes sauntering away, and i'm dead" that dialogue didn't really sit well with me and felt abit off-putting because i feel that was abit self loathing on Tennant's part and talks as if he's not the same person as all the other Doctors all the NuWho fans including the people who wrote this don't really fully understand regeneration it's not a "death" it's a "healing process" he's close to dying then changes into a new person with a new personality but it's still technically the same man plus he's been through it nine times before so it makes zero sense why it would bother The Doctor so much now but other than that that's the only scene in the episode that bothers me.
    The Master's skeleton kind of gives me "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" Skeletor vibes although i'm not the biggest fan of Joker, Crazy insane Master John Simm did perform it very well and made it very intense.
    The Master never dies he always has a back-up plan the reason why he wanted the whole of planet earth looking like him is because he's a complete narcissist.
    I also love the one-off joke scene with The Doctor locking the TARDIS like a modern car it's silly but it's funny.
    The narrator and Time Lord at the end of the episode was Timothy Dalton who is best known as the fourth actor for James Bond 007.

      (and it's hard for me to fully recommend 'Torchwood' - series 1 especially has some truly terrible episodes IMO - but series 3, "Children of Earth", is genuinely great TV and well worth checking out I think)

      Yes, I watched Planet of the Dead. Unfortunately, UA-cam blocked it for copyright issues after SEVERAL rounds of edits and BBC Studios denied my appeal.

    The Doctor is pretty crude about Queen Elizabeth I here.

    I remember watching this convoluted mediocre fake-bombastic plot to unfold and thinking to myself, "yep, RTD needs some rest". It's saved only by actor performances.

      I can definitely see that. He's not my favorite by any means, but he's also not my least favorite (I've seen all the version in Nuwho and the first Master in Classic Who so far).

    The theme of the Doctor as a messiah, which emerged in the finale of the third series with the Apostle Martha, is finally unbearably obvious and vulgar in these specials. And how melodramatic the Tenth in it... it made me don't like him.
    I hope that RTD will not repeat these themes in his new seasons! Love DW every time anyway.
    And great reaction as always.

      i liked it tbh, which means the doctor is not perfect and this doctor was full of emotions and more human than even 8.

      @@Philmaster07 I can completely agree but it's more about how it written for me. 12 Doctor preferred to die rather than change ever again. But RTD as a Coronation St. fan made it feel like soap opera too. I can't appreciate so obvious manipulation but it's just me.

      It's certainly not my favorite final story for a doctor, but I liked this Master story a lot more than the series three one (which was the only other Master story I had seen at the time).

      @@joshuajoshua2732 Honestly, same. I was more than ready to see both Tennant and RTD move on by this point - and the final 20 or so minutes were very indulgent, as you say. I just meant that I think that the Tenth Doctor deserved a better final story.

      Is it necessary? No. But, I've reacted to all of Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures at this point and it's definitely enhanced my Doctor Who viewing experience. When lines like the one in this episode episode come up, I understand and feel the significance of them because I know what they're referring to.
