  • Radio played a key role in the propaganda campaigns of Nazi Germany. The most notorious personality in this radio war was William Joyce, or 'Lord Haw-Haw' - who came to be known as the English voice of Nazi Germany. But he wasn't alone in this effort.
Professor Jo Fox of Durham University discovers the lost transcripts of Radio Caledonia, a 'secret station' designed to disseminate defeatist propaganda to the people of Scotland and sow seeds of dissent among its listeners. Set up by the German Propaganda Ministry in 1940, the presenter was Scottish national Donald Grant.
Jo Fox examines the Nazis' attempts to appeal to Scottish nationalist feeling through these broadcasts and asks why, unlike Joyce, Donald Grant was spared execution.

So are these transcripts or also some recordings? Would have been possible to record with magnetic tapes. The germans already used this technology.

Seems he was well positioned to have a verified opinion, given the facts about Germany of the period it was a veritable paradise and no mistake. Well done him, glad he survived.

Well done. As a professional historian I'm a little sheepish to admit I had never heard of this.

It sounded to me like he wanted peace, at least from the clips played. Churchill had German civilians bombed the day he came to power and for four more months before they retaliated.

There's the theory the Soviets demanded Joyce be executed...for various reasons.
    www.counter-currents.com/2018/06/lord-haw-haw-of-mi5/#more-83493
Pétain was a great hero of the French, but he got a death sentence, barely commuted by de Gaulle. This condemnation wasn’t a ‘French’ decision, any more than the hanging of Joyce was a ‘British’ decision. The British Government was so thoroughly permeated by Soviet interests that if you argued in favor of Joyce you were going to be branded a ‘Nazi’ yourself. The Soviets did not want their collaboration with the Germans 1939-41 to be on the table.
The British services were in at the foundation of fascism; MI5 paid Mussolini £100 a week in 1917 to fight leftists opposed to Italian participation with the Allies in the First War. MI5 was a pro-fascist service till the latter 30s. The Soviets had excellent intelligence and were perfectly aware of this.

Excellent research on a largely forgotten character. These stories make WWII come to life, especially to me as I was once a shortwave hobbyist and presently a WWII history fanatic!

Wow, I'm genuinely shocked that this woman finds it so hard to comprehend that someone who preferred peace to the worst war in human history, resulting in the deaths of 50 million people, might not necessarily have been a Nazi.

Recognised Haw Haw by his voice ? That scar running from his mouth to his right ear must have helped too.
By the way, there is good radio play on youtube about another broadcaster, John Amery ( whose family had links to Churchilll and the Government Government ) who WAS tried and executed after the war.
