Car review in a few | Mazda 3 2018 - brilliant to drive; mind-numbing to own

  • Mazda knows how to make a car that drives properly - see the MX-5 for details. The Mazda 3 has the same dynamic spirit. It's just a shame it's otherwise so very bland.

I don't agree at all about being mundane. Exterior is one of the best looking cars in its class. Interior is simple, elegant and good looking especially with leather upholstery, maybe not as nice as an Audi S3 but most definitely nicer than a Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Kia Ceed and most others in its class. And drives great and is reliable. I like it very much.

Hey. Thanks for having your say - and disagreeing with the review without resorting to name-calling. You're our internet star of the week. :-D

At least it's more interesting on the outside than the likes of a Golf, Less common than a Focus and more reliable than all of them. I like it a lot, I do agree that the inside might be a bit lacking, but I think Mazda have gone with that age old adage of 'KISS' (Keep it Simple Stupid), Perhaps though less is not always more considering the competitive nature of the industry and the offerings from the competition. As an experienced Mazda owner, I would sum the 3 up as a good looking, affordable and reliable drivers car. I would also like to add, this fellow mentions that it hasn't changed for some time aside for an early on face lift of the current model, I am probably wrong here but has the Volkswagen Golf not looked exactly the same for about 20 years now? *SHRUG* Hate me Golf drivers, I don't care, well maybe I do a little. Actually, I am not 100% sure you can compare a Golf to a Mazda 3 anyway.

When do you think is the best time to buy this now it's been replaced by new model. Also will it be a similar feel to a 2009 focus zetec s 2.0 petrol? Driving a mk3 focus ST but fancy a discreet fun to drive non turbo car...

How does the Mazda 3 match up to the ford focus & the ford focus titanium ?

Hi Mark, great content, you make car reviews interesting without forcing the humour! 😍 I'm thinking of swapping my focus ST mk3.5 for a mazda3 2.0, will it be a good swap (especially if I go to BBR 😉)? Cheers George

I wouldn't make that swap personally, but to each his own like... :-D

Its 'average' in performance terms because Mazda didn't bring the 2.5 (N/A 4cyl) petrol (185hp) to the UK for any of their cars, unlike in the US, Canada and Down Under, where they also get the very nice auto version across the range (they dropped the auto in the UK from the fastback).
Not sure whether this was due to Mazda being concerned about getting an EU fine for exceeding corporate CO2 limits on their new car sales, but the 3 is actually quite low on that front anyway, far more than the CX-3 with the same 2.0 petrol engine.
A real shame, as the 2.5 petrol in the 3 and CX-5 is very well regarded and a good alternative to the 1.4/1.5/1.6 turbo petrols in rivals like the Focus, Golf, i30 and the like.
They also seem to want to only flog the hard riding (18in rims) Sport models to the detriment of the much nice riding (on 16in rims) SE-L Navs which have more than enough kit and are very good value, as unless you get the 2.0 165 (one sub-model only) you get the same engine and power in the Sport (no quicker) and barely any difference in handling ability.

The worst thing about the Mazda 3 is that the sweet 2.5l NA engine which is available elsewhere in the 3 is not available in Europe.

I know what mark means - something sadly missing from this car. Can’t put my finger on what exactly it is though? Looks nice enough, drives well, good quality 🤔

I like the 3 and it is great to drive. I think this whole sector is a bit dull these days due to the SUV takeover! VW Golf is great car but PAINFULLY dull unless going for GTi. Ford Focus now looking bit dull! There are so many that look identical apart from the front!

Much prefer the look of the previous Mazda 3 from about 2012 especially the sport model. It looked fantastic compared to this newer style.
