  • An excellent morning spent at Didcot Parkway on the Great Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from Great Western Railway, Cross Country and just the one freight train from Freightliner with the new liveried 66.
    Didcot Parkway was built and opened by the Great Western Railway in 1844. When First built the station was simpky known as Didcot. It wasn't until 1985 when British Rail renamed the station due to the then new bus link that was brought in. Thus making it a parkway station.
    The town of Didcot owes is growth and success to the coming of the railway, as the same year as the station being opened the line towards Oxford was also opened. This allowed greater ease of access for passengers and freight alike which meant the local economy was able to grow which meant more people could move out of the louder areas of the country and move to a relatively small community. But this eventually became a sprawling town with markets a plenty and houses popping up all over the place.
    There was another line that lived here before it closed. This was the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway. This line saw a connection from the Great Western Mainline down to Southampton via Newbury, Highclere, Winchester and Eastleigh. This line though finally saw the end of its life in 1962 just before the infamous Dr Beeching report saw the closure of hundreds of rural lines across the UK. Many of which are actually in the process of being brought back into working life.
    There used to a regular commuter service running to Swindon from Didcot Parkway that would call at Steventon, Wantage Road, Challow, Uffington, Shrivenham and Stratton Park. This was run up until 1964 when the service was terminated. Which then resulted in the closure of those stations.
    1985 saw the current station building opened along with a 600 space car park to make the station more accessible, it would also serve as an entrance for the Park and Ride buses to pull into which would also aim to take traffic off the city Centre roads. This has still worked to this day and is very successful, however A new multi story car park is currently being built to the West of the station.
    My next station is Cholsey

    Great video. Good to hear your heading to Cholsey, I regularly head down to there, good high-speed content, I recommend going on a Friday if possible, a lot more freight seems to move along the line that day. I also recommend Pangbourne station just down the road.

    Amazing video Tornado922. Cross Country has changed its diagrams. Now the Reading/Southampton Central diagrams runs right into Scotland and head via Leeds. Whilst the Penzance/Bristol/South West services are faster trains as they go via Doncaster. With those services terminating at Newcastle.

    Why is it, when the 387s are leaving for London Paddington, the station announcer always says it's bound for Ealing Broadway?

      I think it’s because they want to encourage Paddington passengers to use the Intercity services as they’re faster..........they do the same thing with the outbound services from Paddington, the say they’re terminating at Cholsey rather than Didcot.

    What's the rule for the 800 series units in whether they run using the electric mode (panto-graph) or in diesel mode? Trains headed away from Paddington going into non-electric territory obviously have to run in diesel mode but where do they switch on/off if not at Didcot? What about the 800 series trains that bypass Didcot station (whether going via the Oxford line or going non-stop through Didcot)?

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  6 років тому

      You'll have to forgive me for my lack of knowledge here but this is purely what I have seen whilst I was on my travels that day. As you say the trains going to the west of the country will run under diesel power because even though the catenary is up to Swindon the wires haven't been made 'live' yet. When trains top here heading to London they will switch to their pantograph and run off that for the rest of the route. However if an 800 is passing through the station towards London then the driver will shut off the diesel engine and raise the pantograph as the train is moving, this means that no time is lost during the journey. When they are heading on the line towards Oxford they will do the same thing but in reverse if you catch my meaning. So they will travel the length of the network under electric power and I believe just before they leave Cholsley which is about 4 miles up the line the driver will lower the pantograph down and turn on the diesel engine. I hope that helps

    • @70humdinger94
      @70humdinger94 6 років тому +1

      Yes, I do get it. I was wondering if the change could be done 'on the fly'. The trains that ran non-stop through Didcot station already (or still) had the pantographs down so they were lowered/raised outside your view. There was one train in the video headed toward London that had stopped at the station but was shown leaving with them still down. Guessing the driver either forgot or deliberately did it later. I guess the rule is that if the train is in electrified territory, it has to run on the overhead - no running into or out of Paddington on diesel only. Obvious exception are the HSTs or any 165/166 units. FYI, there's at least one video on UA-cam showing an 800 series making the changeover to from diesel to electric as it shuts down its diesel engine and raises its pantograph units. Thanks again for your great videos.

      It seems to be a bit random - whether they switch to Pantograph for the electric option or not. And how much longer will they have to continue the diesel shuttle to Oxford I wonder?

    • @Cactus732
      @Cactus732 6 років тому

      I’m sure I read somewhere that the 800 can switch from Diesel to Electric and vice versa while moving, but I don’t know whether they do it in practice.
