My 11 year old daughter is being granted a trip from Make-A-Wish after beating brain cancer. She chose Florida for a sea shell hunting adventure! We wanted to stay on Sanibel but were guided to Marco Island because of hurricane repairs. Anywho, after she decided where our adventure would be, we found your channel and have watched every week! We love all the information! We can't wait to find beach treasure and put our toes in the sand. Headed south on Saturday from WA state!
Dearest Beach Friend. You and I have a lot more in common than you know. My daughter was also a Make-A-Wish recipient and she chose to go on a Disney Cruise! That was well before I knew how amazing seashells are, but as luck would have it we did get to go snorkeling with sea turtles. My daughter was 7 when diagnosed and 10 when she finished her treatment. She is now 22 and she is awesome! I can only imagine the relief you must be feeling!!!! Marco Island is fabulous and I'm sure you'll have a great time. A lot of Marco has high rise buildings right on the beach, so if you want more of that "wild Florida" feeling, go to the North end of Marco Island and visit Tigertail. It's beautiful! Please tell your little warrior that I personally am sending you both the best seashell finding luck ever!!! 💪🏻🐚❤️
@SWFBeachLife well, I was not expecting that response! You know exactly how I'm feeling. I can't wait for my little family to just *be* for a whole week. No appointments, no therapies. I'm happy to hear your daughter is doing well after treatment. ❤️ We are staying south on the island but plan to venture to Tigertail and Sanibel.
I came all the way from central Tx to Ft Meyers for a week and was not disappointed Came away with 14lbs of treasures and picked up some garbage. Fl fight conch’s were everywhere and collected four containers of tinies. I can’t help myself once I started just creeping along although I’m 68 with copd and fractured my back twice; I felt no pain. My head was clear and happy and on a mission. Thank you Ft Meyers
And that beach friend is why I go every week. When I am there in my element, there is no place I'd rather be! I'm thrilled you had a good time while you were here and found so many goodies!
11? you found 11 Wentletraps? whaaaaaaa? well you for sure found the honey hole for them. and so many lace murexs, amazing, you really had a ball didnt you? LOL❤
Hello, Beach Angel! So good to hear your sweet voice! I don't remember ever hearing you talk about this park, but I can hardly wait! Wentletraps!? Yay! So many tinies! They're so beautiful in their miniscule perfection! I should have named you Hawkeye, my dear friend! I'll brt you'd be great at washing gravel to find gemstones! I'll take you to North Carolina one day and let you try that! Quid pro quo! That's a gorgeous lace murex! It will clean up nicely, I hope! That little dove snail is so wonderful! That the Lord of the sea should create an infinitesimal shell like the dove shell just because He wanted to make us happy is so wonderful! I'm sure He is laughing for joy at your delighted voice! Enter the wentletraps! What a great thing they are! Ooh, that is such a pretty flyspeck cerith! I think I could watch you pick up tinies all day! Is it the underwater topography and the currents that make one end of the island so different from the other? Wow, that pier stretched way out there! It's going to take a lot of time and money to repair that, for sure! Ian really did a good job of tearing the place up. Even our local newspapers have run stories about the damage you all recorded. They're calling it the hurricane of the century. I hope you folks never see another one that powerful and as destructive! We (Jimmy Buffett and all of us devoted Parrotheads) will always call those sharp little pieces of metal pop tops! I remember when my kid sister stepped on some broken glass one night when we were walking in the moonlight on Pensacola Beach. I carried her piggyback all the long way back to my little cottage! God bless you for picking up so much broken glass! You've saved someone a really bad beach experience! Love to all of my beachy friends and to you, my dearest Beach Angel, from Rebecca, the Lost Mermaid. 🧜♀️ ❤
Like crowned conchs, it seems the wentletraps prefer a "bay-like" environment so I tend to find them in the shadows on the "points" of the islands. And I'm with you - if I never have to evacuate a hurricane again that would be super! My sister cut her foot too once year as a kid when we were on vacation in Ocean City, NJ. I never knew such wonderful seashells could be found at the beach. For me it's like discovering a whole new world that I never knew existed. And boy does that world make me happy!!! Thank you for coming along with me!!!! 🙏🏼
My mom had baskets of shells, when she passed my daughter took them and glued some onto a mirror. She turned her apartment into a visit to the beach, so happy she did that. Special way to honor my mom.

I'm surprised how long it takes to clean up a place after a storm like that. Some places look new again and others look like they haven't been touched. I was so happy to find a new wentletrap location!

I was a little surprised that more hadn't been done at Bowditch yet. I suppose they'll get Lynn Park all cleaned up first. At least we can still park and enjoy the beach there 😃
You did such a great job explaining how to find Wental Traps (spelling?) that when I was in Florida in February I found some when I saw the “coffee grounds” in the water. I never would have even looked for them, but when I saw the conditions I remembered your video and got excited to look. Sure enough I found some! I was at about the same spot. Parked at Bowstitch, too. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. It was like having an instructor in my head as I combed the beaches for the first time in southwest Florida.

at 2:00 it's beautiful over there. Nice quiet spot. I think on a day like that, you could come home with 50 wentletraps if you stick with the black patches. Seems to be Epitonium angulatum (Say, 1830), the Angulate Wentletrap.
I am so glad I finally went up there to make a video and found a brand new spots to look for those tinies. I think you are right. Next time, now that I know they are there, I will see how many of those little white beauties I can find. I do not see the difference between the Epitonium angulatum and Epitonium humphreysii - so those are the ones I'd like to learn first.
Our Ventel Trap ( Dresden) are mutch bigger about 2 cm long. That is not available alot on our beaches. But my wife found a few on the beach's over our country. And every time she found one she is so excited like you are when you found one. The biggest one she got are 3 cm.

Thank you, Sharmon, for sharing this delightful experience with us. The 2 highlights for me were all those wentletraps and the beach bowl! I must say I wish wentletraps came in a larger size. Don't you think that would be fun? But even though they are small they are a piece of art. They remind me of a wedding cake for some reason. Anyway, have yourself a great week!
They call the imperial venus clams "wedding cake" shells! And the wentletraps do get bigger in other parts of the world. The ones we get are just teeny tiny 🥰
Oh my gosh Sharmon!! Wentletrap heaven!! So fun. I love teenie's and tinies!! I could look for them all day. That bright colored true, so pretty!! Yep I could have me a good time there. Will have to check it out next time down. Thanks for another awesome Sunday "beach time" . Just makes a great start for the week. 😊🤗
WOW!!! That was a thrilling outing!! A lot of different shells, Shar. All those Murex reminded me of a TV show I saw this past week about Solomon's mines and how they made the purple dye called Tyrian. It was made just for royalty and the wealthy because they were the only ones who could afford it. Have you heard of it, Shar? They make it from the gland of the Murex sea snail.from the Mediterranean Sea. It takes 100 pounds of Murex snails to create 1 gram of the Tyrian dye. These snails are edible so nothing goes to waste. It hurt my heart to watch them make it but I also found it very fascinating. Ohhh,.. and I think the Cockle beach bowls look like huge Owl eyes. Is that weird or can you see it too? Thank you again for taking me along on another intriguing adventure. It was fun trying out a new beach! Congratulations again on lifting 50 POUNDS of garbage from the beach!! You're my heroine...(Not the druggy kind..hehehee)! Take care, beautiful beach friend. ❤🏖
LOL Heroine!!! Yes, I did know about the purple dye and murex shells. There are some other creatures that have that purple dye color too - I wonder they they only used the murex shells 🤔 The oceans are truly the most fascinating place on Earth!
@@SWFBeachLife I thought you might have known about the dye. The oceans ARE truly the most fascinating place on Earth!....AND you are sharing all that you know on that subject by doing what you do right down to being a .Marine conservationist. I admire you. What a blast! I really love tiny shells. It's another whole world. Can't believe you found all those wentletraps that close to home! Makes me want to look for them tomorrow except it slows me down too much!😂 Thanks Sharmon! xxoo
It's a totally different type of shelling! It's great on that section of beach since there really isn't much else up there. I honestly can't wait to go back and see if I can find them again!
I have said the exact same thing about the wentletrap and sharks teeth!! I went to Sanibel once when I first started collecting shells. It was during summer and I was so disappointed that I didn't find all those spectacular shells you see people posting they find. I then found your channel and I have learned SO MUCH I wish I had known before I went. I have found so many shells in what I brought home and now know that I have more awesome shells than I thought I did, like the wentletrap!! I can't wait to go back at the right time of year and take a tour now that I know what I am look at!!!
SAME HERE! First time I went to Sanibel I went to Bowman's and found one fighting conch and it was alive so I left it. I thought you go to the beach and you pick up shells. How hard can it be right? Well...four years later and many, many trips to the beach under my belt has taught me! But believe me I'm still learning and happy to share what I'm learning so we can all enjoy the beach better! ❤️
All those wentletraps! Maybe some day I'll find some on my own (there aren't many up here in MD).Just know that I am cheering along with you every time you find one.
OMG….. I love all those wentletraps! I’m moving to Bonita Springs (part time) so I will definitely have to check out that area. Thanks for another new beach and fun shelling time!
This end when I visited Ft. Myers is so heartbreaking, seeing it still suffering! I am very excited for you that you found wentletraps! An your lille lighthouse jar will be happy for the new additions!
Loved this - I am a big fan of tiny shells!! Thank you for sharing - I miss Florida beaches. Might get to check out some Carolina beaches later this year.
Can you find tiny shells in the Carolinas? I'd like to check out one or maybe 2 beaches up that way this summer and I'm not sure which beach/s I should try.
Hi!!!! I LOVE YOUr videos. Oil went to do some shelling next weekend. I live in ORLANDO. Where did b Recommend me. Juno Beach or Clearwater for or Dunedin AREA
It took me a REALLY long time before I found my first one. I feel like it's a completely different type of shelling when you're looking for those little ones!
You're amazing...50 lbs. of garbage taken care of. Hooray for you!! I'm really impressed with the wentletraps (and the fact that you said coffee "grounds" Twice, even 😊.) I have a question about them, though: are they always white? I'm presuming that, but do you know? Thanks you for another treat at the end of the weekend!!
There is a brown banded wentletrap that has brown stripes, but most of them are a white or a creamy white color. Was that you that kept corrupting me with the grinds/grounds? I think I might have FINALLY retrained myself to say it correctly 🤣
@@SWFBeachLife Thank you for the color info about wentletraps. I found a couple of white ones in France a couple of years ago. But "corrupting" you with the grinds/ grounds?😂😂😂Well, yes, it was me "correcting" you. You got it right both times in the video!! I truly don't intend to be critical. I'm just very much a "word person." Hugs!
Good day! I have a couple questions, if you could help me with some info. When is it safe to travel to SWF, what time of year? Also, what city or town (location) would you stay in, if you are coming for a quick holiday? Thanks and happy shelling.
I try to wear long sleeves and even pants if I think they will be bad, but I always carry some no seeum spray from Sea Anchored Secrets: seaanchoredsecrets.com/ Use code SWF for $5 off!
Strange, that beach is almost always covered with fighting conch shells but this trip, I'm not seeing any. Is this a seasonal thing or is there something else going on?
In my experience the Northern end of the island doesn't usually have all that much. The southern end of the island is where I find the majority of the good stuff.
I have hunted for shark teeth on the West Coast (this video is from quite a while ago): ua-cam.com/video/p4x7GyKyBjg/v-deo.html And on the East Coast (this one is more recent): ua-cam.com/video/pDYjjYpGwSo/v-deo.html The technique to find the teeth depends on where you are hunting!
Sorry! I've never shelled there. I did shell a little north of there at Honeymoon Island and I loved it! Try going at low tide to help you find those goodies!
I wish I knew what that stuff is! It's an organic material that kind of reminds me of tree bark. For whatever reason, I was told that those conditions are when you should look for wentletraps and sure enough sometimes I find them!
When I got home I put water into my tiny container and I let them sit. Just soaking took care of most of the gunk. If there was still some "Stuff" in there I would probably try a bleach soak to see if that would take care of it. 24 hours should do it.
I do not carry anything other than my camera. My shell bag is slung over my shoulder so I normally put the trash in my shell bag and separate it out when I get home. Unless it's a very bag garbage day, then I have a separate garbage bag and I weigh the garbage before I throw it out.
I hope it's not weird to say but I found your voice aesthetically pleasing to listen to while you hunt for shells it's just so calming 🐚🐚🌊👋
Awe - thank you so much!

I have also found wentletraps in the high tide line on the bay side of Bowditch.
Before the hurricane I found them over there too! I looked but didn't find any this time 😃
Oh my gosh Sharmon!! 😊🤗
Thanks Sharmon, I love tiny shells, especially wentle traps. I would not have been able to walk away from that area. I hope you have an awesome week!
I can't wait to go back and see if those tinies are there all the time!
You are an incredible human being. Until next time Beach Friend! ❤🏖
(P.S.... You really ARE my drug of choice. 🤣 )
Thank you for another shell adventure. Hugs from Johannesburg south Africa
Thank you for watching once again!! 🙏🏼
I love the wee shells! Great video, Sharmon!
Absolutely Love the wentletraps. :)
Love the tinies! ❤❤❤
I love tiny shell clean up!!! 🤣
@@SWFBeachLife 😂
They eluded me for a while but now I just can't get enough of them! They're so fun to find!
Oh so love the tinies ❤
OMG….. I love all those wentletraps! I’m moving to Bonita Springs (part time) so I will definitely have to check out that area. Thanks for another new beach and fun shelling time!
Happy to share a place on Fort Myers Beach that HAS parking!!!
I love the tinies😊
So quite little tiny stuff and soo many winteltraps, so excited to see them. Thank you for your wonderful trips at the beach. I love it ❤
Thank you so much for coming along with me!
Wow! Wish I was there!
Ahhhhh love that you found the wentletraps! ❤😊
Me too! I love that I found a new location to look for them!
I Loved the Wentletraps at the beginning of the vid! Let's Go to the Beach...🎶 🎵 🐚 😎 ⛱️
I will never tire of them. They are so beautiful!
Tinies are my favorite! Awesome video! 🩷
Thank you!
So excited!! Am in Marco today getting ready to meet up with Ali for a shelling trip!,,
That's awesome!!! Good shelling luck to you!!!
I love all the tiny 🐚
They're so cute!!!
@ time 19:08 on your ring finger is that a tiny angel wing connected? Little shells are great finds! ❤
That's a little hinged coquina. Good eye!!
This end when I visited Ft. Myers is so heartbreaking, seeing it still suffering! I am very excited for you that you found wentletraps! An your lille lighthouse jar will be happy for the new additions!
I have barely filled the bottom! I am going to need to make many more trips to this part of the beach!
Thank you beach girl.
You are so welcome beach friend!
Love the tinies!!
I love all the tinys…..
I'm so glad I saw this! I'll be down there tonight...I'm going to have to check out this spot!
Good luck!!!
All so very pretty!!
The brittle star guy was so cute
So much fun!!! Thank you for letting us tag a long! Have a great week. See you Sunday!! XOXO
I hope you have good week too!!!
Love the small ones❤❤
Love it all🐚
10:03 there was a 3rd Wentletrap below your hand at the bottom of the screen
I think you are right! I went back and I think there was a 3rd one there. I was hoping I didn't leave too many behind 🤣
Thank you for the fabulous video. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you for watching!
Hi, I want to come down and go shelling with you! You find the coolest treasures!
I'm quite lucky to live where I do!
Thank you so much for your videos 🤗
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for the new beach ! Awesome finds ! Maybe Hope to also find my 1st Wentletrap !!
It's a totally different type of shelling looking for those itty bitty treasures!
Hi!!!! I LOVE YOUr videos. Oil went to do some shelling next weekend. I live in ORLANDO. Where did b
Recommend me. Juno Beach or Clearwater for or Dunedin AREA
I loved Honeymoon Island on the West Coast and I do really like Jupiter or Juno Beach for the West Coast.
Omg wentlentraps are adorable I haven’t found any yet but I’m really looking 👀 ❤❤
It's a totally different type of shelling. They're so tiny!
P.S. I have developed a new appreciation for the Cantherus Shells; they are beautiful. That red one was a real beauty 😊
Right?! When they have their bumps and just that little bit of yellow they are "so pretty" 😅
I think those are Lamellose and Humphreys Wentletraps
Love the tinies. I have only found 2 of them: one at Keewaydin and one at Lighthouse.
2 wentletraps
But "corrupting" you with the grinds/
grounds?😂😂😂Well, yes, it was me "correcting" you. You got it right both times in the video!! I truly don't intend to be critical. I'm just very much a "word person." Hugs!
@@jantaylor2034 I appreciate you correcting me! 🥰
Good day! I have a couple questions, if you could help me with some info. When is it safe to travel to SWF, what time of year? Also, what city or town (location) would you stay in, if you are coming for a quick holiday? Thanks and happy shelling.
My website FAQ answers all sorts of questions like this - I hope this helps! www.swfbeachlife.com/faq
The last couple of weeks I’ve been thinking about you finding wentletraps. It has been a while. 😊
I'm so excited to find a new spot to get them!!
How do you deal with the Noseum bugs what spray do you recommend?
I try to wear long sleeves and even pants if I think they will be bad, but I always carry some no seeum spray from Sea Anchored Secrets:
seaanchoredsecrets.com/
Use code SWF for $5 off!
Strange, that beach is almost always covered with fighting conch shells but this trip, I'm not seeing any. Is this a seasonal thing or is there something else going on?
In my experience the Northern end of the island doesn't usually have all that much. The southern end of the island is where I find the majority of the good stuff.
Do you hunt shark teeth? If so plz show how to find them.
I have hunted for shark teeth on the West Coast (this video is from quite a while ago): ua-cam.com/video/p4x7GyKyBjg/v-deo.html
And on the East Coast (this one is more recent): ua-cam.com/video/pDYjjYpGwSo/v-deo.html
The technique to find the teeth depends on where you are hunting!
Thank you
Have you ever shelled at Indian rock beach? If so how is it
Sorry! I've never shelled there. I did shell a little north of there at Honeymoon Island and I loved it! Try going at low tide to help you find those goodies!
Great finds! I saw the black stuff washing up on the beach in my area. Why causes it bring in certain shells and what is it called?
I wish I knew what that stuff is! It's an organic material that kind of reminds me of tree bark. For whatever reason, I was told that those conditions are when you should look for wentletraps and sure enough sometimes I find them!
@@SWFBeachLife Very interesting. Thank you. I guess I'll be on the hunt for tree bark material on the beach now lol
@@hoppas77 And bubbles! “They” say that black stuff and bubbles = wentletraps 😃
@@SWFBeachLife 😃
How do you get that dark sand and junk out of the tiny wenteltrap? I'm trying to clean out some spiral land snails and i can't get to the center!!! 😭😮
When I got home I put water into my tiny container and I let them sit. Just soaking took care of most of the gunk. If there was still some "Stuff" in there I would probably try a bleach soak to see if that would take care of it. 24 hours should do it.
Best wishes to your daughter.Hope she stays cancer free forever. Enjoy your stay at Marco Island.😅
Will be at Marco next Saturday where can I find sand dollars
I never leave Tigertail without a few!
What is those coffee grounds
I don't know! They look like pieces of wood.
Wentletraps!!😀
Do you ever take a bucket gather up debris and wash it out at home?
I do not carry anything other than my camera. My shell bag is slung over my shoulder so I normally put the trash in my shell bag and separate it out when I get home. Unless it's a very bag garbage day, then I have a separate garbage bag and I weigh the garbage before I throw it out.
I want a Noble wentaltrap really bad!!
I had to look that up. Holy cow - I need one of those too!!!
@@SWFBeachLife Ha, ha! LOL! :)
