    🎉 Congratulations! For many sea glass collectors, finding a sea marble like that would be the equivalent of finding a junonia, as it’s considered a highly desirable find that is rare on most beaches, especially if it’s a vintage, heavily frosted marble. 😊 You can put a tiny touch of mineral oil on the marble if you prefer more transparency in the glass, although some people prefer the natural frostiness.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  13 днів тому +1

      Thank you!! Someone else asked why I got so excited - I couldn't exactly tell why other than it's a "glass collecting thing." I knew it was a cool find but I didn't know how cool - thank you for that! I did put it in my special shell box even though it wasn't a shell 😊

    Loved our wonderful walk tonight!! All the shells are beautiful! The first thing I said when you came up the the rocks that line that wall was , well thank goodness it's super low tide cause I remembered that was where you fell. Ft Myers is so lovely. I really enjoyed the adventure. Can't wait till next week's surprise walk. Have a great week!😊😊

    Stunning sea marble, perfectly beach kissed. After 20 years of living at the beach, the only time I keep broken shells are if they are huge or something I don't have like you until I find an upgrade. I have used so many throughout the years to make wreaths, pictures, jewelry, Christmas trees and ornaments that I probably have half what I have picked up and still have LOTS, so why pick up broken ones? Thanks Sharmon!

      Thank you so much for that input. It must be frustrating to watch someone leave so much behind, but the struggle to keep shells, pieces of shells and everything else organized can be overwhelming. I feel like I need to justify why I don't keep everything 😅 Thank you for taking the time to let me know your thoughts! ❤️

      As of last Thursday we had gotten 19" of rain in 4 days. We were quite soggy and I couldn't get out to the beach! That being said, I'm going to hit the 10K islands today, so that's where we'll be going this Sunday (sorry if you don't like spoilers). The rain storms hopefully churned things up a bit. I haven't been to Kice Island in a quite a while so I'm excited to see what's going to be there!

    Most of the olive shells I find on Hobe Sound beach are creamy white with light tan bands. I found one very large dark one that is my prize. I only have 5 or 6 jewel boxes. I have a whole jar of rose petals thou mine are rounder than yours and very hot pink. It is so fun to see the difference in shells. We find scotch bonnets on ocassion and silt shells, sea hearts and sea pearls. I have a large jar of shark eyes. I found a couple as big as my hand. Sand Dollars are always in pieces. My favorite collection is my Lion Paws. I wish we could trade places for a day. King conchs are rare.

    I love seeing the pelicans and other birds (are they cormorants?) at the pier when you walk by.
    That hinged really spiny jewel box at the beginning was great, and I loved the one you found later that had so much pink color on it.
    And the marble!! Cat's eyes (like you found) were always my favorites when I was a kid!
    I'm really not trying to be critical with the following, just trying to share my knowledge the way you share yours about the beach.
    Traverse is a noun = Travel across. (Like a traverse rod for draperies...drapes travel across it.)
    Transverse is an adjective = Extending or lying across; in a crosswise direction; at right angles to the long axis. (I'm thinking there must be something about this that relates to the transverse ark shells, but I haven't been able to find out where their name came from.)
    So, traverse moves across; transverse doesn't move, it lies across.
    And the tide was at -.11, (minus point one one) not actually at "minus eleven" when you mentioned it at the end of the video. It would've been waaaaaay 🫨 out there of it had been -11.
    This was a great day on the beach, Sharmon. I was out of town visiting in another part of the state and didn't get to beachcomb with you until today (Saturday), but THAT means I get to see another of your videos tomorrow!!!

    At 8:00 received a 159 mm Sunray recently. It is from the USA, but not known where exactly. Most seem to be from Florida. Finding a marble on the beach means good luck ahead... You had good luck with the Florida Cones. I would consider them one of the most desireable, because they are hard to find in top quality: mint lip, minimal scarring (healed breaks), good colour for the species and super large size. That combination is hard, therefore very desirable.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  13 днів тому

      That sounds like a very impressive Sunray clam. I just measured one of mine and it's about half that size.
      That's a very good point about the condition of the FL cones. They really are rare to find in good condition. Do you have any idea whey they always have that scarring?

    Better late than never, though! I'll have to run down the beach to catch up with y'all! 😅
    Now that spiny jewelbox is why I won't go barefoot on the beach, though I might wear my barefoot shoes, my new favorite shoes!
    Beautiful sand dollar, girl! That's one shell I really want to find, a crown conch! Along with a bunch of calico scallops and a nautica or two. Maybe even a honkin' big horse conch! I know, I know, it's an addiction!
    I'd have kept that flame-kissed fighting conch! I'd stick it down in sand so the chewed up part wouldn't show! It was gorgeous!
    Nice lace murex, honey! It should clean up great!

      I have never been shelling in HI, however I know I would want a sunrise scallop. And a cowrie and some cones 😃I would definitely like to go there one day.

    What a beautiful low tide today! And all those FL cones and nutmegs! I just saw someone on fb post a pic asking for an ID on a tiger moon snail/wedding shell this past week! Wonder if it was from the same wedding, ha!

      LOL it might have been the same wedding! The shell was pretty and we do have fancy moon snails - just not quite THAT fancy 😂

    When are you going to use a giant comb to comb the beach?

      I don't plan on getting a comb, however I have some pretty good scoops that come in handy!

    I have a little theory about the “wedding shells” because I have noticed a lot more of them showing up after the hurricane… I know that a lot of the tourist shops sold shells from other parts of the world and some of those same shops were destroyed or at the very least had water rushing in and out of them… I think those tourist shop shells have ended up being washed out by the hurricane and are making their way back up onto shore. Besides the tourist shops, I think there were also a lot of private collections that were lost in homes that were damaged or destroyed, and I would suspect avid shellers with big collections may have shelled other places on vacation and had them in the collections that were lost. So even though they are not native, it’s kinda cool to find them. They were introduced into the area in an unusual way and it’s a bit of a treasure hunt to find out what they are and where they came from. I’m so glad that you kept the perfectly broken tops of the lightning whelks. They are really pretty and so intriguing. I always think they would make beautiful jewelry. I can imagine the big one as a hair barrette. I think I would feel like a mermaid wearing that in my hair.

      What a pretty vision...the lighting whelk barrette.
      I have met the ladies that lost their collections to the hurricane, so it is possible that their shells are indeed washing back up. I was still glad to find a wedding shell and explain to everyone what it was. I've found wedding shells before a very long time ago and was surprised to learn how that all works.

    Constricted marcoma? That's a new one for me! Is it in the tellin family? Kinda looks tellin-y.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  13 днів тому

      Good eye! It is a member of the Tellinidae family! They look a little like a smaller version of the "potato chip" shell - the Atlantic fat tellin 😅 The Atlantic fat tellin I had to go to Honeymoon Island to find!

    I want to come to Florida. Living on the end of the United States, I do not have these advantages to find these shells let alone any shells.

    What do you do with all your shells? I think they are pretty,but after you get lots of the same shell what do you do with them? Do you decorate with them . Interesting to see what different kinds you can find. CindyM.

    How do you know the cone shells are OK to pick up/

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  13 днів тому

      We don't have cones here that will kill you, so our cones aren't as dangerous. They will sting you like the other cones, but their venom is more like a bee sting. Also, it is very unusual to find a live cone (I've only found a few live ones) so it's really not all that dangerous to pick up a cone.

    Are sharks eye and a false shark eye the same kind of snail, and the only difference is the hole in the back of the shell, or are they two different types of snail that live in similar shells

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  9 днів тому +1

      The shark eye and the false shark eye are like really, really close cousins. They have different names, so technically, they are different species. They look almost identical though, except for that scoop on the back of the shell.

      I consider Jan-March to be winter. If we're talking good shells, I will say best time is Dec-April.

      Yay on the bug spray! And there is no good parking down at the South end of Fort Myers Beach. I have a special pass or I walk a few miles.

      Ok thanks. I have had a knee replacement and looking for close parking. My friend and I are planning a road trip down the west coast of Florida and up the east coast! We are coming in January. My bucket list trip ! I’m from Gulf Shores Alabama. The shelling here can’t compare to farther south.

      @@PeggyMcClain-ku5wf Closest parking to good shelling is Lighhouse Beach on Sanibel. The beach is RIGHT THERE!
