Vans how do you remember this shit Grosso? Between drugs and life I don't remember shit! And you'd probably win in a drug/life competition. You also still rip hard and fast, whilst giving ZERO fucks.... you win Jeff. Sorry. Mr.Grosso....
I've been home watching Loveletters every day because my knee is all blown up. So glad that this got posted today. Grosso looks so damn happy in the opening. That's tight.
Hey kids, I'm 41 now. Started skating in 87'. It really bit me hard in 88'. No matter what has hapend in my life, I've never been able to stop! Roll Forever! Skate and Destroy!!!!
That was so cool, the best part was bringing to life the sequence photos. Thx for that. These mags were the Bible of skating and even to this day they still give me the stoke to look thru them.
Skateboarding can really be anything you want it to. It took me nearly 30 years to figure that out. I bet the late 70s and early 80s was a really special time period, though.
I bought that first issue with Weaver on the cover after seeing Bahne ads in Surfer -- from that point on I could think of nothing else. And those shots of Jay at the Dogbowl by Sharp-- I love Friedman but Sharp also captured the hardcore Dogtown vibe too.
Yeah - I grew up waiting for Skateboarder to arrive each month at my local shop... Strople, Wally, Pineapple,Tony, and Jay - all my favs... Haven't skated with Wally yet. Maybe one day.
Thank you Vans and Jeff Grosso for continuing to put out Love Letters!!I think this is the best skateboarding show there is.If U guys had a donate option for this show,I would bequest.!!
I love picturing Jeff and his buddies looking through this archive. I hope that you guys put together an episode of that.... O wait. You did. never mind.
I was lucky enough to be in the last generation of the skate mags in the early 90s when I finally got 411vm #1 it was my first time seeing other people actually skating in motion
I remember those mags times and ads. I agree 1979 great year..you wanted to be that guy in the pool hitting the tile..i had a shop kugo model with graphics on top with clear pizza grip tape ,red kryptonite and Lazer trucks,I was a freshman in high school...life was good because I skated.
This one is sick! I kept pausing it over & over just to see all the cool '70s pics & old magazine covers. Brad Bowman does look cool af. I've never seen alot of these photos they're rad. "The only mf's that cool are in hollywood"!!😂😂
That was unexpected, watching for my love of skateboarding and suddenly there's an old Amiga computer on screen 02:13 that I still use to this day to do quirky artwork on!
Bobby Piercy won the Catalina Classic and Lucero is right about everything: Lazer trucks were the best trucks and 1979 was the best year in skateboarding ; ) Grosso, Lucero, and Lance were all ams with Variflex which was the team that wore half-shirts.
Hey Vans and Grosso I have an idea for a love letters...survey all the pros you can and ask them about the best ramp they skated. Or do one on the mini ramp or about launch ramps as we called them here in St. Louis. Thanks for all of it skateboarding!!!
Hard rock beat, confident feet; The feeling is real, a magic unique; Life in the fast lane, Or laid back with grace; Win lose, or draw, It’s a dance, not a race.
In the late 70s,I got a sub for Skateboarder mag. 3 issues into my subscription I received Action Now mag. I was so pissed off. Action Now mag was not all about Skateboarding. So pissed!! Soon later insurance companies forced Skateboard parks to close in N Texas. So Bumed! Too young to go too far to find a place to skate other than some street stuff near my house. Thank the Gods skateboarding came back. Found sum friends in High School who skated. I was Saved by the Skate Gods!!
SkateBoarder mag was the coolest thing in the world to this 13 yr. old in Columbus, Ohio. Our skate park was a drainage ditch called Arcadia because that was the closest street. Ironically I think thats where Jeff was from, Arcadia, Ca. Like a dumbass I threw a huge stack of SkateBoarder mags away a long time ago. Still kicking myself.....
its hard to tell if there is a style now and we just cant see it cause were still in it, or if we've just been in a gradual culture decline since the 60s.
That's the most ignorant thing to say. Skateboarding became more diverse and global within this era, it is pretty easy to find skateboarders who are pleasing to the eye.
we wanted the archive to come out when this episode did but we ran into a little snag (it wasn't perfect) so we delayed it until the release of part 2 (July 20th)--- go to skateboardermag.com
Grosso digs deep in the past to bring the best ads and articles in all the old skate mags. What do you remember from them?
Good Memory!
Vans I'm 30. So 2/3's of it. No. 1/3 cause I don't remember being 4.
Vans how do you remember this shit Grosso? Between drugs and life I don't remember shit! And you'd probably win in a drug/life competition. You also still rip hard and fast, whilst giving ZERO fucks.... you win Jeff.
Sorry. Mr.Grosso....
that was the best. thank you.... rip mike weed
where is his pool?
Just let em play. Jeff's voice is so soothing. RIP big brother
The music in this video is everything.
I've been home watching Loveletters every day because my knee is all blown up. So glad that this got posted today. Grosso looks so damn happy in the opening. That's tight.

The 70's were amazing. Surf style everywhere. I skate like that nowadays. This is one of the best episodes for sure. Thank you Grosso and Vans
The animation of the photo sequences were awesome! Please do more of them!
That was so cool, the best part was bringing to life the sequence photos. Thx for that. These mags were the Bible of skating and even to this day they still give me the stoke to look thru them.

Bobby Piercy won the Catalina Classic and Lucero is right about everything: Lazer trucks were the best trucks and 1979 was the best year in skateboarding ; ) Grosso, Lucero, and Lance were all ams with Variflex which was the team that wore half-shirts.
Jeff you hit the truth on skateboarding every time.
The man speaks the truth. For more Grosso check out this link: bit.ly/2tcdikz

Rad letters. Bowman, Strople, Olson, Alva, Weaver. Classic cool guys.

Hey Vans and Grosso I have an idea for a love letters...survey all the pros you can and ask them about the best ramp they skated. Or do one on the mini ramp or about launch ramps as we called them here in St. Louis. Thanks for all of it skateboarding!!!

Man i wish Zorlac..G&S..pre Dorfman Sims..Schmitt Stix..even fukin Vision itself would come back.
from a photographers point of view it would be great to do a special on the kit they were all using back then to take these shots....
I had a Puma half shirt that I didnt cut. They actually used to sell half shirts.
Good one
You got me out of the pool for that? Kook. ! LoL no just kidding, I got all those mag's
