"Understanding the Unique Conflictual Cooperation between Russia and Turkey"(Liubchak & Sözen).

This is a presentation of the ISA 2023 paper by Vera Liubchak and Ahmet Sözen. Russian-Turkish relations have experienced several strong fluctuations from very close cooperation to sharp confrontations. Russia and Turkey have serious disagreements on some issues, but they manage to maintain close interaction. This article tries to answer the question of how the transformation of the international system and the vision of Russia and Turkey of their roles in this system affect their relations. The article offers a new perspective relying on a combination of theories of power transition and the theory of hegemony to analyse Russian-Turkish relations. The purpose of this study is to analyse the changes in Russian-Turkish relations through the prism of dissatisfaction with the existing order, and efforts to limit the position of the hegemon and take its place in the multi-polar world.
