A federal solution will not work because is does not allow both sides to have self determination. In fact a federal solution is a recipe for disaster. This isn't rocket science. The Australia and New Zealand model of equivalent citizenship is by far the most superior solution and it will work as proved by Australia and New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand are 2 separate sovereign countries so they are both self determined. A citizen of New Zealand can live and work in Australia with citizenship rights, and a citizen of Australia can live and work in New Zealand with citizenship rights. Both peoples can live freely in either country and may also adopt the citizenship of either country if they so choose, although this is not necessary as they share the same rights. Apply this to Cyrus and you would have two separate sovereign countries, North and South, where both sides are self governed, yet a citizen of either side can live anywhere on the island with equal citizenship rights. The South would recognize citizenship of the North, and the North would recognize citizenship of the South. I think most people do not understand the simplicity and the success of the Australia and New Zealand shared citizenship model. Self determination and simplicity are in this model. A federated solution will not provide self determination, one side will always oppress the other side, it would be a disaster. A two state solution as per the proven Australia and New Zealand model would be an absolute success, it would open up the island for everyone and would really improve trade and bonds between ALL countries involved especially Turkey and Greece. You cannot compare the separatist plight of the Turkish Kurds with what has happened in Cyprus because their history is totally different. Turkey was born as a state almost a 100 years ago for everyone regardless of ethnic origins. Cyprus on the other hand has yet to be properly established it terms of its sovereignty, that is what this is all about isn't it!

My opinion is that a federation would work as long as ALL Cypriots are treated as equals and that is enshrined in constitutional laws that cannot be undone by future leaders. If combined with an energy deal that the whole region can agree on - then a unified Cyprus potentially could experience an economic boom and become one of the wealthiest euro zone countries.

....just found your lecture, it,s very interesting but not completely true. First, i would like to state, and this is not your fault, but in your audience the origins of the students, or even their knowledge of middle east politics, or history, seems to be the same as that of someone who has only graduated from 3rd or 4th year of gymnasium. It was correct that you started from westphalia (Germany) and continued so as to give a chronological order of things, and when you reached the year 1878 you stated very clearly with a special accent on this period that the island was, and truly so rented to the British Empire untill 1914, you made no mention of annexation by Britain from 1914-1925, when Cyprus was declared a British Crown Colony, just after the signing of the treaty of Lossane, which you did mention, but rather gently changing the words to go like this....Cyprus became a British colony.... but you on purpose avoided mentioning the important and very specific clause either the third or fourth clause which CLEARLY said, and with Turkeys agreement that the Turkeys does not have any teritorial claims over Cyprus, and any matters which existed up to that point concerning any other treaty over Cyprus were null and void from that point, and the only agreement that was now in official recognition by the newly established state, of the Republic of Turkey was the treaty of Losanne. In 1923, by this treaty Turkey had nothing to do with Cyprus, and that was officiall. Then you continued, but i stopped following because i understood that this was going to be another well practised propaganda programme about 1963. We have heard this story so many times. Do you know that in 1950, when the referendum was carried out by the Church of Cyprus that 96 percent of the population voted to unite the Island with Greece, and that number was including the overwhelming majority of the turkish speaking Cypriots also ?. Do you know that during the 1931 october uprising against colonial rule that the turkish speaking Cypriots, did not get involved on the side of the British because the Mufti had said that it was the right of our greek speaking brothers to demand what they were demanding, and that they would always be cosistent with the greek speaking Cypriots ?. There was no hatred between any Cypriots, untill the late fifties when people like Denktash and Giorkatzis were in their hey days killing Cypriots, and the British taking advantage of this in order to create division and a civil war situation. We are all victims of foreign intervention, Ottoman, British, Greek, Turkish. We are not afraid to say it clearly. ALL CYPRIOTS SHOULD DEMAND IS ONE CLEAR AND SIMPLE THING..CYPRUS FOR CYPRIOTS, one government, free movement, free elections for all Cypriots to vote for whoever they wish, no limitations, Britain, Greece and Turkey to leave our country ALONE. All flags must come down, salute them, put them on ships and send them back to were they came from. ONE PEOPLE, ONE GOVERNMENT, ONE FLAG, ONE LAW. That,s DEMOCRACY.
