The dubious consent is such an issue in so many dark romances and it’s getting to the point where i’m concerned about the real life consequences. like so many people (women) are thirsting over the haunting Adeline books where she’s literally crying during sex acts and saying no? like dark romance is one thing and r*pe is another thing
I really worry about the young girls reading all the bully romances, etc. I feel like this type thing could really warp their perception of what is actually acceptable treatment from a romantic interest.

100% agree with you and other reviewers who have noted that authors seem to be getting sucked into feeling like their spice has to be OFF THE CHARTS in order for their books to ping the Book ToK radar, and generate buzz.
And yes, relationship development is getting lost in the process. I’ve even been going back and revisiting a lot of old reads just to get my angst/pining/romance fix.
I’ll be glad when the pendulum swings back again, because I’m not a prude about spice/smut/kink, but without the relationship development, it just leaves me cold.
Okay, but when you analyse the practicalities of why this isn't realistic at book 1, you're my girl. I'm doing it all the time, to the detriment of my enjoyment. like, when did she pack her clothes, why was it for a month, why am I creating a mental timeline for something i read for fun??

I noticed that if a book is really well written and captures me with its angst/tension etc, I can suspend my disbelief way easier and not be bothered by these little details. If the book fails to capture me that well, I will notice all the little inconsistencies and all the little absurdities that the author neglects to polish out of the story. The power of writing, I guess 😅

I totally agree about the fact that it seems like romance books right now care more about having as many sex scenes as possible in place of building strong characters and romantic connections/tension. It's really disappointing and makes all of the tropes like rivals-to-lovers/enemies-to-lovers/friends-to-lovers/etc pointless because they all start banging 10% into the book. It's almost like authors/editors don't think that romantic and character development add to sex scenes. Which is bonkers to me.
My fave hockey romance is an m/m romance by Tal Bauer, Gravity. It‘s very emotional and the hockey plot is also interesting (I usually don‘t care about the sports in sports romances but this one I was really rooting for the team). It‘s also on KU!

Loved your review of Meet Your Match and what you say about having more plausible or clear reasons for the close proximity set up? Why is she living with him? How's that her job? LOL, when the reasons for moving madly gets lost, for "romance reasons," it takes away from the experience and build up. I too like more intimacy and being invested in the character through thought and sem-slow burns. Thx.

I feel like Focused by Karla Sorensen does the “social media/documentary to bring hero and heroine together” very well. If you haven’t read that one, it’s a great football romance that maybe sounds more your speed than Meet Your Match.

Meet Your Match definitely felt very contrived, like very fanfiction in the way that everything was just a set up for a sexy scene or to progress the relationship. But I picked this up on KU and to me I kinda expect that of KU books, they’re just focused on the romance and not necessarily the details surrounding it. Like I don’t expect to give a 5 to a KU book but most of them get a 4. Like when you said you don’t see how these two are puzzle piece and will last forever, I just don’t expect that from. KU book, I just want it be fun and entertaining.

I paused Meet Your Match. I love Kandi's other books especially "Blind Side and "Hail Mary" but I just couldn't vibe with Maven. I felt she was too harsh and judgemental. I couldn't get into Behind the Net either. Shutout by Avery Keelan has been my favourite hockey romance this month. Especially the audio book playing in the car scene ❤. Secret Obsession was too much for me. Maybe I'll revisit it.

Secret Obsession - couldn’t get past 30-ish%. The problem with this series for me is like you said, it’s not a good ROMANCE though it’s kind of billed as one. The other two books at the end, I was left just kinda feeling icky and not with a warm heart like I usually do. Miles killing that dude before even 10% was over the top psycho and it was just hard to believe. Not sure I will continue with this series on future releases.
The second book in S. Massery's serie , Devious Obsession, in my mind is the best one in 3. The hero is the most awful but he has his reasons and they change over course of the story.

I really liked Brutal Obsession, but Miles is a full fledged r*pist and I genuinely hope people do not continue to support that book by purchasing it. I regret buying a physical edition because I am so appalled and disgusted by the contents in that story. Lord knows I'm a dark romance girlie, but ever since "dark romance" became a buzzword, I feel like it's opened the doors for authors and readers/reviewers to glorify SA and domestic violence and it's really fucked up.
This is not towards Chandler but in MYM this is what happens when an author tries to force a “woke” vibes. If you have to create something that feel so unrealistic to convey it, it isn’t genuine. I’m tired of this in books. I think a book should portray the world you see around you and the characters should form organically from that view, if it’s not fantasy that is. Authors please stop forcing it.
