    Thanks to this video I managed to load the bobbin/shuttle and thread up my vintage Naumann machine - and it sews beautifully!

    I recently got a German (Naumann) sewing machine that's pretty similar to yours. I didn't know how to thread it, because a treadle machine I learned on in the 1960s had a bobbin and was different. So I found your video and discovered where the shuttle was located and especially how to thread it! I had NO IDEA. haha Thank you. I have the original product manual but it's in German without illustrations. These German machines are da bomb!

    Thank you. This shuttle is the same as the one in my recently acquired 1930s Frister & Rossmann machine. You have solved my dilemma.

    Beautiful machine. My Bernhard Stoewer has the same kind measure tape ornamentals on the wooden desk as your Opel has. Very beautiful and practical German design.

    On the opposite side of the pointed nose of the bobbin there is a slot where you can slide the thread so you don't have to manually put it through up and under, hope that helps

    The shuttle is similar to the one in my serpentine jones hand machine. There is a notch in the shuttle at the end of the rod to help you get the thread around the rod. I can see yours has the same notch.

    Hi do you think you could please show me a close up of your bobbin with the hole ..I have a pin in mine. I found a bobbin and shuttle but my bobbin doesn't have the hole so I think I think I need to find a different one.

    Hi, Thank you for the instructive video, I have a Stoewer Princess which is very similar to the Opel in the video, do you have any idea what kind of needles will take your Opel and probably my Stoewer? many thanks

      For the German TS machines, try a modern DBx1 first. If that doesn't work look for a SYS 339 (difficult to find in the U.S.) or Boye 23 (12x1). Best of luck!

    That was really clear. I have a 1901 Frister Rossmann (my Precioussss) & it seems that I've been threading the bobbin a little incorrectly :"-) Also the bobbin winder, which seems a little loose on mine. Would you go over the upper tension, at some point?

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  7 років тому

      These lovely old machines are often very flexible in some aspects, especially regarding winding the bobbin. I have a couple of machines that I just guide the thread with my finger while it winds. Which upper tension are you referring to? Both bobbin winder assembly and machine use two tension discs that you pass the thread thru. The bobbin winder one just keeps the thread taught and straight, the machine tension discs are adjusted by the thumb screw at the top of the faceplate.

    can I ask where you get needles? I can use singers in mine,but I have to set them lower.

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  2 роки тому

      Hi P Heart. Depending on the needle clamp I can sometimes use the modern DBx1 needles in these machines. The best are the SYS339 needles, but they are very difficult to find. Best of luck!

    I have a Universal Agency not sure what year. It has a transverse shuttle like the Opel, I would say it is identical to the Opel in design. I need some spools for my machine. Where can I get some?

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  6 років тому

      Matthew, you might inquire in a local sewing machine shop. Oftentimes they have old machine parts. Otherwise check with some auction sites for parts. Best of luck!

    I have a question for you. I have a German machine like yours and I would like to know if all of your face plates move ? The silver plates around the feed dogs. I am missing the long one in front of the feed dogs I think it is just a seam guide. Have you any links to spare parts? The only plate that opens on my machine is the shuttle plate. Does all of the other plates come off? I don't want to break anything while I am trying to clean and oil the machine.Thank you for any info.

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  6 років тому +1

      Yes, generally the slide plates on both sides of the needleplate can move. Often they are stuck shut from many years of gunky oil. Depending on the machine, I won't force the right side plate to open if I can clean it adequately without removing, as once they are loose, they can slide open when stitching and be a nuisance. Having it loose also can cause it to go missing. Best of luck!

    Hello ... I have what I believe is a German transverse machine though I can’t find markings. What needle do they use?

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  4 роки тому

      I usually start with trying a DBx1 modern needle. If that doesn't work, the most often used needle was a SYS 339 needle but they are difficult to find. I find that sometimes the Boye 23 (12x1) needles will work.

    Hi , I have an Ossa German Transverse Sewing Machine and would like to know how to fix the tension?

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  3 роки тому

      Hi Susie. Besides a thorough cleaning, there are other adjustments that can be made to fix the tension. I would recommend checking out the face book group, Vintage Sewing Machine for Beginners, to get help on how to fix. Best of luck!

      There is a slider beneath the winder system, on the flat bottom. Loosen the screw and slide left/right

  • @edster3994

    Hi I think you missed a bit. In the first pass through the shuttle, after you come off the spool, you can use the round slot in the flat end to loop it over the bar. If you look at 2:37 its the bit almost on the corner. Bring the thread out to the end, loop it through and bring it back, and you're done.

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  6 років тому

      Ah yes, you are correct. Some of the German shuttles do have that little slot to make it quicker to pass the thread around the bar. Thank you for pointing it out. I often forget to look for them.

    Hi, what size of needle for this machine please?

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  4 роки тому +2

      I recommend starting with a modern DBx1 needle. If it doesn't fit, then a SYS 339 needle (hard to find), or a Boye 23 (12x1) needle. Best of luck!

    My needle won’t grab the bobbin thread any help

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  4 роки тому

      If your machine is like this one, check that there isn't too much oil in the needle path and that you are using the correct needle. There are numerous groups on face book that you can post in for help. Good luck!

  • @onamissionize
    @onamissionize 6 років тому +1

    Also do you have a source for the needles?

    • @SewMachines
      @SewMachines  6 років тому +1

      I would recommend starting with modern Organ brand DBx1 needles. These often fit a number of transverse shuttle machines. The Boye 23 needles sometimes fits as well.

    I have a shuttle like yours, but with a little trap door and I can't figure out how to thread it. Could I email you a photo of it or post it on my instagram where you could see it? Thanks bunches! All was going well until my bobbin ran out of thread.
