  • I have wanted to do a video exclusively about Freja for some time, and here it is! She was due for a tune-up, and I was due a reminder of all the spots she needs oil. She runs so much smoother now. I definitely had forgotten a spot or two the last couple of times I applied oil.
I hope you enjoy this little adventure into the care and maintenance of hand-turned sewing machines. :)

I just saw a note about someone who purchased a machine like this one. And subsequently discovered this UA-cam site. Thank you for sharing how absolutely beautiful this machine is , how it works, how to clean, simply everything about it! Such a pleasure to see a beautiful sewing machine being used and loved.

I just bought a Singer 99 hand turned machine and oh! I love her so much! I have always hated sewing, but I thought for some reason that a hand turned machine would make me enjoy it. And I was right!
I made sure to buy one that was already in working condition (it also came with the manual and all but one of the original attachments). She sews soooo smoothly (and even more smoothly when I finally put the bobbin thread in correctly, lol) and all day long at work I'm thinking of what I want to sew next.
And winding the bobbin is so much fun that I hardly mind when it runs out!

Oh, I’m so happy to hear that! I really do love a beautiful, well-made machine. I don’t find I need more than the straight stitch, and it is such a joy to work with. 🥰

Beautiful machine. Love the flowers on the decoration.
And yes, they drink oil more than even I drink beer.
My transverse shuttle machine loves a light oiling every time I sit down to sew and a full oil at the start of every project. It sews whisper quiet and needs hardly a touch to get it moving. Over 100 years old and she sews better than any modern machine I've ever met.
Thanks for sharing your treasure with us.

Very oil thirsty, indeed! How fun to hear that yours is the same way.
And I must agree again. Her stitches are so even and tight. And she doesn’t drop a stitch either. Unless I’ve installed the needle wrong. 😅

I was searching for a video where I could see how to put in the needle in my Köhler Saxonia, and I am so greatful for your video, as your Freja has the exactly same needle holder as my Saxonia. The search has end!

I bought a 1915 hand-crank Singer 99K during the second lockdown. I didn't trust that any vintage electric machine I found would work (plus I don't trust the Grandparents wiring) so I went backwards in technology when I started looking. At that point the sewing repair shops were closed. I got lucky in her, feels like playing a Stradivarius. Then I fell down the rabbit-hole that is attachments. You're machine is such an amazing find and is simply beautiful. I read somewhere that you clean the machine every time you finish a project. Grease, if you use it, gets done every two projects. Not sure if it's true, but it sounds like a decent guideline?
I also recently brought home a 1949 Singer Featherweight. The Godkids have finally reached the point where they're interested in learning how to sew. So I got something that's "portable" so I can work beside them in their apartments.
I was severely tempted by the facebook Marketplace to bring home a hand crank children's sewing machine (chain stitch) that came in its own case. I've kind of been regretting not buying it... But I don't want to become a machine collector.

By-the-by - There's a foot attachment that Singer came out with in the 50's for zigzag stitch. It uses round metal cams to create basic decorative stitches. Including zigzag. I'm determined to sew knit fabric. Husqvarna must have come up with an equivalent?

This is the part of new technology I LOVE! I’m at an event this week and found a Freja (foot only version) who needs a lil bit of oil and care. Im set on getting it going this week. It’s not mine but I find it satisfying to fix stuff. Also turns out my mom has an old sewing machine I can take over 🤓 I’m ecstatic!! Not sure what model or brand, only that it’s one of those you have to flip up from the table.

Found your fantastic video today. I went to your website but could not find det picture of where to oil the machine. I have a Freja with pedale, but that seems to be the only difference. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for this. I just inherited a Husqvarna CB 15 treadle. 1910-1930. She still works but I cannot figure out the bobbin situation. This model is VERY similar (hand crank instead of treadle) so I'm going to see what I can manage. THANK YOU for such detailed information!

That makes me so happy! They are very resilient machines in my experience, so I hope and think you’ll get her back up in tip top shape. 🥰

These are Prym round shank 287/690 needles no. 100. I get them from my local habedashery, but I don’t think they’re particularly rare or difficult to find.
