    Have you or would you ever keep a storage unit temporarily? Why or why not?

      Just while moving, if there's a gap between moving out of one place and into the new one.

      Yes, currently sharing storage with son for yarn storage for charity blankets. Using it up weekly and sharing the extra and keeping out of house. I am setting a time for using it up so it does not sit too long. I am kind of okay with it...

      I would say no, but since we have a home that's too big for us and way too much stuff, I guess the real answer is yes. I am working on it though, albeit without too much support from my bride. Struggling to envision what life will be like when I get closer to having only what I need and actually use than my/our current state.

      No. Promised myself I couldn't pay to not be around my things even when we move out of state and back again. Things that would not be used for a year or two just needs to go to someone who will use it.

      Yes, just last year we rented a storage container for about a month when we had to move everything out of our house during a remodel.

    This is yet another example of the integrity, respect and kindness that rises when non essentials are out of the way of having authentic, loving relationships. I enjoyed seeing the caring dynamic between you two.

    Minimalism is about flow and progress toward lifestyle of simplicity. Not about numbers of items. That will always change in stages of life, hobbies.

    HAAH! Joshua getting caught at a storage locker! I love it. Sounds like a Seinfeld episode or something absurd…. Like when Homer was “forced” to each his pet lobster Pinchy. Point well taken though. Minimalism isn’t the prescription. It’s a mindset of intent. Getting rid of the stuff (whatever that may be) getting in the way of the stuff that matters. Additionally, Understanding the value of things is not only what we take from them but also measured against the time required to also care for them. I’m a minimalist and I still probably have 299,999 items in my house but every new one has much better intention and overall moving towards peace from letting go. Thanks as always for sharing! I missed being able to see you guys when you were in NY last Jan due to “Covid exposure” while not getting sick. I hope to share my thanks again in person some day! But for now these additional videos are nice clarity!!!

      Absolutely! I rid of things and simplify by ridding of things not using therefore making space for food storage. I do not consider this a "bad" just in case, but a "good" one. But would be interested to see what others do.

    Letting go is the hardest thing to do. Let me just say once you do it you will be like that is surprisingly easy. What I like is if you minimalize and you will do it logically you will pair down the right things and keep the best for you.

    I love your videos! I've been influenced by you finally change the path of my life, even though it's hard and I am afraid of disappointing my dear ones. I will be recording some of this path. Don't have the proper tools to record it yet, but i'm going to do it and post it anyways. Have a blessed week!

    Yeah my spouse says as a minimalist I have more stuff BUT I remind him this includes our kicthen items, bending, toiletries, cleaning supplies, our printer🤣 SO is it really "MY Stuff". I downsized the 9 coffee mugs "I" had to just two, and it took a whole day of holding each one up for him and trying to get him to just keep his two favorites since he's the only one who drinks coffee😂 But these are MY things.

    I would definitely use a storage unit temporarily, for example if I sold my house and traveled for a while. I only own what I consider to be essential at this point, and am extremely selective, so I’d want to set up a future minimalist home with what I already own. I will never keep storage for “just in case items” though, if it’s not in my home and used often, it’s outta here!

    So, just thinking about the 300k items. If you pair it down to 30k you still have 30k items and have gotten rid of 90% of your stuff. If you are the statistically average household.

    • @Phi.21
      @Phi.21 Рік тому

      I thought about the 100 items thing too... I don't want to live in a home that looks barren. More like, you go on a two week holiday to an air b and b with a suitcase full of stuff, and that's enough and will continue to be after you've washed your clothes
      My flat is fairly minimally furnished (storage wise), but has curtains and rugs and art and cushions etc. Should those count as the hundred things or just the stuff in my 'suitcase'?
      I think the point where someone only has things that adds value to their life differs for everybody.

  • @pinkroses135

    I'm just rolling with whatever sparks joy. Having an expectation for a mates number of possessions seems a bit much. If their stuff causes trouble there's probably a deeper root issue.

    TNR (trap-neuter-return) is a really good method, it really is effective at reducing feral cat populations without harming the cats in any way, though it can be a lot of work

    • @yarnprepper
      @yarnprepper 2 роки тому +3

      Yes! We just trapped 5 feral cats in 48 hours. The Tomcat will be fixed and released back to us. It’s better to have an established male. He will drive out all the breeder males. The mom will also be TNR. The three kittens will be fixed and adopted.

    Naturally lady would have more items even as a minimalist: for example bras, jewellery, hair care items, hygiene products, high heels, handbags, night wear- slips, night dresses etc. not to mention sexy underwear - stockings and suspenders and etc. It is natural for a woman to have more than a man 😊

    • @jainthorne4136
      @jainthorne4136 2 роки тому

      I depends on the woman. I own three pairs of shoes. I have no make up and stopped wearing jewelry years ago. Hygiene products? One shampoo, one conditioner, one lotion and one soap. I stopped carrying a handbag in high school over 4 decades ago. Now is this to pat myself on the back? Not at all. It's taken me years to figure out what suits me and I don't expect it to suit other people. But having said all that, I have a male friend who is a minimalist and he has more shoes, clothes and hygiene products. I guess my point is that it's individual not gender specific.

    • @Phi.21
      @Phi.21 Рік тому

      I've recently started dating again and am reevaluating my underwear situation 😂. But I'm with the other person who replied to your comment. I only ever own one shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, face serum and body moisturizer that I also use on my face. One if each makeup item.
      There are other beauty maintenance things but for me they take up less space than a medium sized handbag.
      And talking of handbags, I have a backpack and a smaller bag. Some clunky shoes and some worky shoes.
      I'm with Jeff on the jackets though, I have four, just because that's all people notice when it's cold outside.

    We have found storage units super helpful in our multiple moves in the 20 years my husband and I have been together. We always used them temporarily, storing packed boxes for home sale staging for example. We are currently building our next home. We were in a rental that held our items we wanted to keep packed. The owner sold the house out from under us and in a pinch had to find another rental. We had to get a storage unit for packed items since we ended up downsizing in the current rental. We do no want to get rid of our items just yet until we are in the new house and can see what will work in the new space. We are trying to avoid "buying new things/furniture" until we know that what we have will work perfectly or not! In the end, we will not have the unit. Josh and Rebecca together crack me up and I hope to see her more in the future on The Minimalists Podcast. :)
