The thing that I love about Jack's appearance in Utopia is that it's canonically right where series 1 of Torchwood leaves off. So if you think about how THAT ends, Jack's only just recovered from having his entire soul sucked out by the giant demon Abbadon and taking DAYS to come back to life rather than a few seconds. He's just reconciled with the entire team, forgiven Owen for deciding to open the Rift in the first place...and he just buggers off when he hears the TARDIS at the end of the episode and endures even more trauma!
Martha is easily by the far best of the Tennant era- once you get past the hype of Donna of series four. Beautifully underplayed by Freema who goes from puppy dog not Rose to action hero and not a Rey Palpatine in sight
In my opinion, that season is one of the crowning achievements of Doctor Who. There's just nothing much wrong with it. And Martha's up there with Ace, for me.
Loved her as well, shame they tried to shoehorn her in as a love interest which seemed unnatural or forced. Probably why donna works since she doesn't want the doctor romantically
Thanks for making another very entertaining as well as informative review and the Aunty Beryl joke. (Is it Auntie or Aunty?) I continue to be impressed by your knowledge of British popular culture (particularly the 1970s & 80s). I spotted "Blue Peter", "Doctor Who Magazine" and the "Television Licence Fee" in this review. That's why I was so impressed by the references to Mr Bronson in "Grange Hill" that you used to make. In your last reply we discussed one of the five times he played Adolf Hitler. He also played Heinrich Himmler three times. As I suspect that you are well aware, he frequently appeared in British sci-fi TV series and the ones that I know of are: - One of the five times he played Adolf Hitler was in "The Tomorrow People". - He played was a particularly nasty Federation Trooper in "Blake's 7". - He was one of the four people that were eaten alive and then had their steaming carcasses spat out by the creature in the "Space: 1999!" episode "Dragon's Domain". - I hope all of the above series are on your "to do" list. - He made several appearances in Dr Who. I don't remember you name checking him when you reviewed them, but I'm prepared to be proved wrong. - Finally, he was Admiral Ozzel in "The Empire Strikes Back". Once again, well done, keep it up!
IMO this is Tennant's best season as the Doctor and Martha is the best companion he's had. All that romance with 10 and Rose is so awkward and his character only benefits from Rose's departure. He finally gets to play his incarnation as a standard Doctor rather than one that's in love and he has some brilliant moments in S3. Martha is also a much more likeable companion than Rose who by S2 had become insufferable. Also the run of episodes from Lazarus Experiment to Sound of Drums is pretty awesome.
Shame we never got to see Sally Sparrow again on Who. Obviously, that would require Carey Mulligan's career to go into decline and I wouldn't wish that on her, but it would still be nice if she put in another appearance.
18:03 i haven't watched in years, but watched all of these episodes as american premieres. In fact , despite not seeing them since, I suddenly got the visceral sensation of "Martha was done wrong!". It reminded me of the very good days of this show, and where my life was then. This show, this series, and the preceding, and more than a few following, are really, really special to me. You did a great job covering them. Thanks!
Imagine the kid who won the Blue Peter contest watching the episode back and finding out your severed head would go on to be a psychotic murdering killing machine 😅
In an interview on an extra about blue peter on the TV Movie DVD, John Bell said he loved it, and was really proud that his character was also a doctor who monster.
Dear Stam, my wife and I really enjoy your reviews! We were wondering why you have - so far - gave no attention to a series that we enjoyed in the past: 'Farscape'!!! Please consider this for a future review (and please, keep up the funny comments). Also, is the series " China Beach " a possibility for a future video? From The Netherlands a sincere 'Thank you' and goodbye!!
Also cool that the Plasmavore in Smith and Jones is Anne Reid, the lady who played nurse Crane In the belter of a 7th Doctor story and personal favourite story of mine ‘The Curse of Fenric’
Spot on review Stam Fine. The RTD 'Doctor Who' machine was in high gear by this time. The combination of the daleks and 'Coldplay' has traumatised me even more than seeing the Autons in 'Spearhead From Space' as a four year-old. Fortunately, I can console myself by chanting my favourite Shakespearean mantra - "This is the shit!". Classic.
I totally turned a friend on to DW by showing him Blink. DW had a bad rep from the 80s. I figured my friend would respond to a Doctor-lite ep and he did. Once he saw how good the writing can be, he got into the show. But not the classic show. As a Who fan, you can only hope for so much.
Great review of Series 3! My favorite story out of Series 3 is Human Nature and Family and Blood and that is my favorite David Tennant story of all time.
FYI for who nerds - "Human Nature/Family of Blood" was a story that originally appeared as one of the Doctor Who Adventure novels that continued the 7th Doctor Adventure after the classic series stopped & until the new series started. A lot of the writers of these novels became writers for new Who, including Paul Cornell, who re-wrote his novel for the TV. The original novel version of this story was 7th Doctor & Bernice Summerfield (the next companion after Ace). .. and yeah, a lot of this series guest cast had a early acting appearance in these episodes & went very quickly onto very successful & prolific careers.
What made "Blink" so great with the concept is that even the AUDIENCE never sees the Angels move, which brings their quantum lock into the audience's reality. Even if WE are looking at them, they can't move. And that's why every subsequent Angel episode ruined them.
The episode we always used to introduce people to the show wasn't "Blink" but Moffat's earlier "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", which does have a lot of the Ninth Doctor in it and also introduces Jack Harkness.
The masters reintroduction was great and utopia was one of the best episodes of this season, but I can’t help after watching some classic who and a lot of the Roger Delgado master episodes I would’ve loved when we find out that Harold Saxon is the master as the Prime Minister you just get that classic 70s musical sting
Doctor Who Series 3 is my favourite. 2007 was the perfect time. The 3 perfect stories, "Family of Blood", "Blink" and "Utopia", is a showrunner and writer, RTD, on a roll. Each one showcases Doctor Who's magic. "Last of the Timelords" is an argument for MORE episodes. IMAGINE The BBC give the budget of Doctor Who an increase to enable 3 episodes to be added onto the series'. The purpose? Showing Martha's fight to survive as she travels the world spreading the word of the Doctor. Meanwhile, it would show us struggle of Jack and the Doctor to regain control from the Master. The overall idea would be to explore and expand on the events on the carrier and Earth. Hell, Martha's year could've been an entire mini series. I always loved Martha because she was someone you'd want to travel with. Rose seemed almost obsessed with the Doctor. She was meant to be a strong empowered woman yet here she is acting like she's overly dependant on him. Martha's exit is similar to Tegan in the sense she's her own person. A great series showing how brilliant Doctor Who can be when you utilize the concepts with care and passion. Thank you Stan Fine for a Allonsy! video, David
16:54 Actually, the Chameleon Arch was first introduced in the 1996 movie, the Master used it to try and steal the Doctor's regenerations. Plus, it was implied in one of the books that the whole "half human" concept the Doctor talked about in the movie was because the Doctor used a malfunctioning Chameleon Arch to turn him half human, so no, the Chameleon Arch wasn't in created in this episode. Another thing to point out is that the fob watch isn't the Chameleon Arch, it's a Time Lord fob watch that is compatible with the Chameleon Arch. The Arch itself is the metal Crown of Thorns the Doctor puts in himself before turning human.
Martha is a good companion, however I'm inclined to be with Rose, even for the reason why she left the Doctor: she didn't do that of her own free will, she was trapped in a parallel dimension
Martha rules! And, thank you for proving I'm not the only one who loathes Russell T. Davies' horrible patchwork arc plots. Bad Wolf refuses to make sense no matter how I try. Anyway... this is PEAK WHO.
Ya know, I really would've liked to see some character at some point come up with the (should-be) obvious idea of blinking one eye at a time(!) when they need to stare down a Weeping Angel. Yes, it takes a little concentration, but not that much. Not when your life in on the line if you don't do it. We have two eyes, people.
Spot on, Mate! I gave up on the New Adventures after Malcom Tucker but this season does stand out for excellent ideas. Too bad they ran out of them at the end...
Excellent review as always, Im glad you talked up Human Nature/ Family of Blood as Ive run into people who thin those episodes are awful (they are very wrong)............. Last of the Time Lords was a shockingly bad episode and one of the early examples of the "Doctor as a messiah figure" tangent that became more annoyingly prevalent as time went on
The main thing I dislike about this series is that basically, from "42" onwards, the Doctor isn't really in it. He's either possessed, or chameleon arched, or Doctor-lited, or aged into Gollum. There's only "Utopia" where the Doctor is the Doctor for the whole episode.
*Actually* : the Doctor and Shakespeare met in person and were in the same corridor, when Black... ehm, the Doctor hit him rightously for torturing school children for a few hundred years. He also invented the ball pen!
Well so many comments here are the polar opposite of my feelings about this series. It's the one that almost made me give up on new Who (that honour would later go to series 10), there are so many lower than par stories (DIM, TSC and of course the last 2 eps) and Martha starts off well enough but proves to be weak as dishwater. (Not Freema's fault, she's just not used or written well.) She really only comes into her own in Stolen Earth/Journey's End. A deeply forgettable series
Not a fan of series 3 and the Martha character, it's fairly grim as a rewatch. I remember watching the end credits roll on the "End of Time" car crash and being so happy that this era was over, you have remined me of this joy 👍 😂
You're the first channel I've seen on here to finally call out what a bad starting point Blink is. You might as well throw on a Buffy episode to sell the show.
You know... while I think the "Human Nature" two-parter is a very good story, it's always bugged me that this feels like it's supposed to be a reflection or a comparison on who the Doctor could be if he was a normal human but it kind of fails at that if you watch it by itself -- it doesn't really show enough of The Doctor as The Doctor for the ideas to really sink in unless you're watching it back-to-back with the rest of the season. But even then it still ends up being something of a problem since the two episodes immediately before it aren't nearly as strong, and the very next story still doesn't have much of The Doctor in it. So it winds up feeling to me like a very strong story that's unfortunately made weaker by the structure it's forced into and the way it ultimately has to be told. It's always a little bit frustrating to me when I see a good story done dirty by something that's outside of it. I'll admit I haven't read the novel that it was based on but my gut feeling at least is that the story might not have to compromise as much in that medium.
My problem with New Who is that they nearly always go big with the last episode of the season and it usually falls flat. Doctor Who doesn’t work as a big budget sci-fi. It’s always better as a Sherlock Holmes in space, where the cleaver ideas outshine any big action set piece. The Last of the Timelords is such cringe, with both Gollum Doctor and Jesus Doctor. It had such a great cast and basic premise, but spoiled it all by going overboard.
I never liked the stories that portrayed The Doctor as some kind of Messiah. Some good stories in this series though. Next series was much better as a whole though
25:48 THAT's what turns me off NuWho and I've only ever seen it in clips so far. The guy who was a backworld nobody for 26 seasons is suddenly the second coming of... Christ, who came up with that idea? It's like the writers confused the reverence they have for the character with how the world he inhabits should feel about him. 26:57 I was being facetious about the Christ line!
Of every episode featuring Martha, I can only handle rewatching two of them -- Gridlock and Blink. I just find here and her family so intolerably uninteresting and often extremely annoying. Gridlock succeeds despite Martha because it's just so much fun. Blink succeeds because she's only in the episode about 15 seconds, and the rest of the episode is fantastic.
RTD gave us a new era of the show in 2005 (and arguably the best new Who Doctor), although I dread to think what his 2023 return will bring. I stopped watching when Peter Capaldi was ditched for the useless Jodie Whittaker, and it looks like current day RTD will continue Chibnall's destruction of a once loved show.
@@Tolstoy111 Because 2023 BBC isn't the same as it was in 2005. They have a diversity policy in place that means the show won't go back to its family friendly roots, and Chibnall completely smashed the shows origin with his "small child tortured by scientist to discover regeneration" BS. And based on who has been cast as The Doctor I think RTD will continue on the path started by Chibnall.
@@dragonmac1234 Doctor Who has always dispensed with Canon that it didn't find useful anymore- the Doctor being half-human etc. RTD will either ignore it or retcon it. Not sure what you mean by "family friendly" there was a gay character in Series 1 so...
@@Tolstoy111 I'm talking about the show as it was when I grew up, I remember my family watching Tom Baker on a Saturday night. Chibnall completely broke the canon with the timeless child story, William Hartnell was no longer the first Doctor and the character lost the mystery that surrounded him for decades. If people like the "woke" show that's fine, my Doctor Who died when the Karen brigade came along.
@@dragonmac1234 The Canon was even more broken by the '96 movie that claimed the Doctor was half human. That's been ignored. The 2nd Doctor said that Time Lords could "live forever", that's been ignored. The Timeless Child business will likely be ignored.
“Donna would be back again. And again.”

Martha is so underrated as a companion, and so damn beautiful.

I agree. A real beauty.

Um dude wait til you find out about the Cartmel Masterplan and what they were very unsubtly trying to do with the Seventh Doctor
Of every episode featuring Martha, I can only handle rewatching two of them -- Gridlock and Blink. I just find here and her family so intolerably uninteresting and often extremely annoying. Gridlock succeeds despite Martha because it's just so much fun. Blink succeeds because she's only in the episode about 15 seconds, and the rest of the episode is fantastic.
human nature/family of blood is worth a re-watch
RTD gave us a new era of the show in 2005 (and arguably the best new Who Doctor), although I dread to think what his 2023 return will bring. I stopped watching when Peter Capaldi was ditched for the useless Jodie Whittaker, and it looks like current day RTD will continue Chibnall's destruction of a once loved show.
Why do you think RTD will not improve it?
Please no more singing Daleks.
Couldn't stand Donna and her big mouth.
Awesome. As usual.
