There's this great progression of The Doctor throughout the season. He starts out angry, guilty, and bitter which truly reveals itself in "Dalek". Then in "The Doctor Dances" is where I think he truly becomes THE DOCTOR again in his own mind. He'd seen and caused so much death, he needed a solid win. As a long time fan of the original, "Everybody Lives" is my favorite moment in all of Who. When we get to the finale, he's finally done with the idea of mass killing "for the greater good". Eccleston was indeed, "FANTASTIC".
14:27 Actually "Canonically", the Cyberman's head was intended to be from the Troughton story "The Invasion" which was definitely NOT set in the future. They simply used the wrong prop in the scene.
Paul McGann would have really been a fantastic Doctor. We got a glimpse of just how great he could have been in that little special leading up to the 50th anniversary special.
The thing I love the most about the Christmas invasion, was the Doctor saves the day in a typically English sounding way, with an orange, its almost like Douglas Adams style of writing
I think it was a blessing in disguise that Christopher eccelston left at the end of the first series. Because new audiences that were too young or not born when the original series aired, got to see all the hallmarks of the show. Like the Tardis, Darleks, but because they had to change the actor the new audiences got to see the Doctor regenerate at the end of the 1st series. So audiences worldwide fully understood the premise and the uniqueness of the show by the end of the first season. Then followed by Tennent arguably one of the best ever. Also If i was the DR ,i would have taken Jackie up on her offer, LOL. I wouldn't have in 2005 when this first aired, but 17 years later.
Eccleston was wonderful. Showed range depth and a light touch that tenants “shouty” doctor eventually got to grips with as well. Never got on with the Matt smith iteration and had given up on it by the time that Jodie W picked it up but I’m sure she’s ok. She was good in Attack The Block after all … Anyway…it seems a shame that Eccleston was treated so badly or one of his peers was. I get the impression (this is me inferring rather a lot) that a member or members of the crew were sh@t on by RTD & co in the production office and the technical people had the temerity to resist this bullying from the show runners. Eccles ton stuck up for them and left and then the bbc compounded the error by releasing that cock and bull press release about a “mutual” decision etc. I think Chris (rightly) is still waiting for an apology for that. He’s the sort of person who you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of but seems loyal to a tee. I’ve had bosses like that and they are the best people to work for. They back you to the hilt. Others seem nice superficially but then stab you front back sideways at 1st opp. Rant over. Great clip.
@@briananthony4044 he toned down the portrayal but the stories were anything but toned-down. However I did like Capaldi's final season, since most of Moffat's excesses were put to the side in favour of setting-up the new status quo for that season. And Bill was great.
I remember the first time I stumbled across the "reboot". Dad raised me on Tom Baker, so I knew Who, but this was just incredible. It was the one with the monster bird thing, the one with Rose's dad. I was immediately hooked, and while I don't watch anymore, I'll always have "my doctor" (I was also a huge "Coupling" fan, so Moffat does little wrong in my book)
I’ve seen a number of your bond videos and now doctor who? Wonderful! I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your humour and warmth. This is by far the best review channel ever. Where else can I learn all the details and piss myself at the same time. Sir I salute you
Like most U.S versions of British TV series, many alterations were made such as "half human" did not go well. A shift, already mentioned, was toward the companion and extended family. This began with Ace. 3 of 4 stories in season 26 were centered on Ace and continues forward, creating stronger stories.
Eccleston was great as the Doctor. Dalek was just sublime, and for all of the following years I still think it was the best episode of new Who. Yes there have been more action packed episodes if that's what you like, but for sheer emotion and passion Dalek has never been surpassed imho. Eccleston was superb. I will always feel that we have been robbed of what could have been had he stayed in the role longer, but now that the full story of his reasons for leaving are out in the public domain I can understand why he did leave.
One of the better relaunches of a TV show ever. Struck just the right balance between appealing to a new audience and completely respecting everything that came before. Eccleston's Doctor was beguiling and mysterious and despite the 'Oop Narrrrth accent completely and utterly alien. Billie Piper was engaging, vulnerable, and relatable as Rose. It had the odd mis-step (what doesn't?) but that first season for my money could be the strongest most consistently perfect in New Who's entire run. They nailed it right out of the gate. And they were *fantastic*.
Surely the psychic paper was just as overused as the sonic screwdriver? It's not proper Doctor Who without him being thrown in a cell, escaping, getting caught, being put back in the cell, escaping, getting caught, being put in a different cell, doing the old "Get Help," escaping, realising he left something important in his cell, surrendering, being put back in the cell, before finally being dragged out of his cell and presented to another know all know nothing leader-type, so that he can be condemned to death but only after a short stint in a conveniently nearby cell. That's what modern Who gets wrong: not enough time spent getting nowhere fast, week in, week out. All this fast paced, action packed, humourous, emotional pay-off heavy, good natured fun... too much thriller, not enough filler, by half. You don't need psychic Anaglypta paper to see the writing is on the wall for this so called, "New Who." It'll never catch on. Mark my words, after this first season right here, Doctor Who will be Locum Hiatus for good this time. And it's the last we'll ever hear of this "RTD" bloke an' all!
Great Show. It was a hoot. Why do people even bother saying: "My favourite Doctor is...". We all know that there is only one Doctor. There has only ever been one Doctor. And there will only ever be one Doctor. OK, sometimes there are several Doctors, like when they make a Doctor Who Special... OK, there are other Doctors like Doctor Zhivago, Doctor Jones, Doctor Finlay, Doctor Kildare... Even so, there is only ONE Doctor. Wait! I think people are referring to the Actor who plays Doctor Who. Ah, now that makes sense. Sorry to waste your time. Move along...
My understanding is Eccleston was frustrated with people not knowing what they were doing or should be doing considering it was the first series. He felt one the directors he had a close relationship with did not get enough support from RTD, and lost the opportunity to direct further episodes unfairly. He went to the BBC top brass to protest and they told him where to go. So he left. The way the BBC treated him was appalling. Lying about him being too tired to cope with the schedule. It pretty much destroyed his career. No wonder he was bitter.
I was 4-5 years old. It was cool having my dad show me old Tom baker episodes and then seeing this and eventually filling in the gaps as a teenager to now in my 20s
I'm an American fan of Doctor Who. I worked at a NATO post in Europe and when the new series aired my UK friends invited my wife and I and a bunch of others to their place to watch it. My wife isn't a big fan of Doctor Who and knew almost nothing about the show so it was kind of funny how she didn't understand why we all cheered when the theme music started.
Nice bit near the end comparing the old show to the new one, and fine handling of why he was only in this one year. I do still wonder for more but y'know...
Thanks once again for an awesome, insightful perspective on Doctor Who! My heart goes out to the cast and crew that had to put up with so many sexual creep-a-zoids as co-workers - those crappy actions made for an unsafe workplace, that's for sure -- and *nobody* wants that in their Day Job... ....and too bad Eccleston is forever haunted by this experience (he did recently perform as the Doctor in a Big Finnish audio play, so he's slowly coming around...!). It would've been great to see him fight off the alternate-reality Cybermen or Weeping Angels! I always find it really strange to see former Doctors sorta complaining about how the show still follows them around - did they really think they could shake it - like it shouldn't matter, "because it's Television"?! Regardless, I tip my hat to Eccleston for staying pro and giving a great performance despite what was happening behind the scenes. I find actors who come into sci-fi with a pro attitude and strong work ethic are always the best at their craft and great to watch. He should easily make top 3 of anyone's list of favourite Doctors (mine are: 1) Tennant, 2) Baker and 3) Eccleston in case you were wondering... you probably weren't tho... 😉 )
How come you only reference the old explaination of why he left the show? Two years ago Eccleston talked about the real reason he left the show; he was battling severe anorexia at the time & check himself into rehab "the day after filming ended"
Eccleston never quite gelled with me, but I was happy to see Who back on TV. Although seeing your retrospective reminds me that I still haven't watch all the episodes in S1.
Me again 🙂 this is simply the best video on UA-cam a nostalgiac trip to a fantastic time in Dr Who history and a karaoke Dalek so to surmise it has everything needed in the best video on UA-cam
Subway once gave me chunky coffee. I have subsequently gone back for sandwiches and cookies with slight flavours of sandwich, but I’ve never again trusted them with fluids.
Love your reviews, especially your classic who vids, you’re a witty fella so brings a bit more fun to these reviews which is sorely lacking from other channels. You should give a stab at the first 2 doctors aswell for some fun. Big love from the big snax
Given what is now understood to be the reason Eccleston left I think characterising him as just having a chip on his shoulder is a little low, especially as you raise the alleged on-set behaviour of Barrowman yourself toward the end of the video. Eccleston stood up for the members of the production staff who were being upset but who were also being ignored by the people in charge. That is also the reason Eccleston said he would only come back if a certain person was directing - that particular director was the only one who would not put up with Barrowman's behaviour.
I love your vids and reviewd I have laughed every time and every vid always gives me a chuckle and a laugh this really cheers me up after a 12 hour shift you obviously have loads of talent and put lots of effort in your comdic writing keep up the good work and keep at it!!!! ❤️ your channel will grow I have no doubt about it
This was an outstanding series reboot/revival, and I think RTD did about as well as he possibly could. We have character arcs! Real special effects! Sets that aren't made out of styrofoam! Doctor Who actually gets to smooch his sidekick! Okay, that last one probably dated a bit, but I do remember feeling annoyed and frustrated at the lack of any sexual chemistry on Classic Who, especially when most people I tried showing episodes to were making wisecracks about all the Doctor's "girlfriends" (very much like Bond Girls). Just let him kiss someone for once! I don't care if it's a Muppet at this point. I do like Eccleston's take on the character and it probably works best that he's only around for a single season. He has a very nice character arc that reaches a proper climax by the end. At the time, I had assumed that RTD crafted this series on the assumption that there wouldn't be any more seasons, and so wanted to leave all threads tied up nicely. Fortunately, the show was a big hit and we've been blessed with many more seasons. Although I get the impression that everybody hates Doctor Who again. Sigh. Oh, and expect smug Trekkies to point at the Father's Day episode and make those coughing sounds. "Cough, ripoff, ahem."
Cheers Stam Fine yet another great review 👍 Imo Christopher Ecclestone did a great job of reviving the Doctor Who series and I really liked the harder edge of this series. Billie Piper turned out to be a much better actress than many thought as at the time she was seen as a teen pop star so people thought she wouldn’t be able to act her way out of a paper bag. Personally I think the more recent series of Doctor Who have lost their way with some awful writing and an over emphasis on PC elements. I look forward to your reviews of later series and your take on them. I look forward to the next damn fine Stam Fine review of a tv series I and no doubt many remember from the past. Thanks from a UK subscriber 👍
A great historical look back of the rebirth of Dr. WHO…it was….brilliant! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊👍👍 I fell in love with Billy Piper….again 😄 I so agree that the beginning, middle and end stories in one episode were sooo refreshing…that almost all scriptwriter have forgotten how to do. Moffat was a genial writer…you are sooo right. I found the fart episode funny in a childish way…lets face it…we all revisit our childhood now and again 😄😉 I think the BBC ruined the series…not because if Jodie Foster…but mainly the scriptwriter…Chris Chibnall 😒 The peak were David Tennant and Matt Smith…were…like..opium to me…I sure…miss…those times😔
A good Doctor, shame he only got one season. Overall, it was a decent enough season to kick-start the new series. The intimidating new Daleks almost make up for the ridiculous Slitheen. And even they would've been good if their CG look was a bit better and they didn't fart every two seconds.
RTD did exactly what was needed to turn a half remembered Sci fi series into must see viewing! And Eccleston totally redefined who The Doctor could be!
half-remembered? I mean, come on who didn't watch Tom Baker after school as the Doctor? Or read the novels at the breakfast table? We were gagging for new Doctor Who. Of course when it did come out it was "new crap" and I haven't bothered with any of the new series. But then you just can't beat Tom Baker. Everything after 9/11 sucks, and none of the young people know any better.
the helmet from "Dalek" was from 1975's "Revenge of the Cybermen", which at the time was a refurbished helmet from the 60s and had knurled hoses added. that story did take place in Earth's future, when the space traffic beacon had just finished construction and newly in use. probably used as nostalgia bait, and how Van Stratten got it isn't interesting. just that he had it is. Maybe Fenric sent it back through time.
Given all the series' penchant for horrifying deaths and disturbing themes, I'm still trying to figure out why it's called a kid's show after all these years :P No sex? Is that it? Or no blood? Most of the time? I think in the beginning it seemed as if it were aimed in that direction but it seems like it's a method of distancing, somehow
I think I started watching this season in 2015 or so. As a kid, i remember barely watching the series. So for me, this was the beginning. i hated Tennant for many episodes but the stories were good enough to keep watching. I stopped watching after Matt Smith left the show.
i would have to go to a subway to confirm. It seemed like it would possibly. if they did have vegan cheese, it couldn't be any less cheese-like than subway's actual cheese.
Stam, that was a good video and I enjoyed it BUT I thought you were a UA-camr who looked at less mainstream stuff? Nothing wrong with going a bit modern sometimes but please don't forget things like the recent Man from UNCLE (1963) you did. Then again, maybe other subscribers want some newer stuff? Whatever, just thought I would add my two cents worth. Will watch whatever you do. Thanks.
UA-camrs are a victim of the algorithm, unfortunately. The fact is there are more searches for Doctor Who than many of the other series he's reviewed, so it can draw more people to channel. I do love his classic reviews. Many have brought back childhood memories I'd nearly forgotten. Others have been shows I'd never heard of that I look forward to finding and watching some day.
The idea is to cover a mix of modern and classic stuff. If someone doesn't like the subject of a vid one week, no problem, there'll be something totally different the next week.
@@StamFine Fair enough good sir, thanks for taking the time to respond! I am looking very much looking to the Baker and McCoy years, whenever they do arrive :)
Hi Stam, It's Shawn. I feel like this video is like hanging out with Frodo in the shire at the start of the Lord of the Rings. I know you're going to Mordor and it's going to be bad, like really, really bad. But it's about the journey right. Thankfully we've got a few more episodes before we reach Mount Doom
A good fart joke can be funny. There are plenty of times they work. It's all about tone and context. Shrek? Great movie. Funny fart jokes. Dr. Who? Probably shouldn't have them.
The key is timing and knowing when enough's enough. I don't think the Slitheen episode succeeded there. It also wasn't helped by the Slitheen laughing about it. Laughing at your own joke is a comedy killer.
"Fairly low rated story from the 80's". You take that back about Remembrance now!! That's my favourite and McCoy was MY Doctor. Thin ice, my friend. Thin ice 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 🤣
remembrance is a great story, easily the best late 80s story, but in terms of viewing figures/ratings, it didn't pull in the numbers compared to earlier eras or the new show
@@StamFine There, you have a point. But it was up against Coronation Street, if memory serves. Which didn't help. And yes, definitely one of the best of the late 80's 👍
Probably my fav doctor in the relaunched show. Tennant was good too, but Eccleston just had a bit more warmth and humour. I'd probably like Capaldi too, but I'd stopped watching by that point, the writing isn't much good I expect.
I finally watched Capaldis run at the start of this year and I was pleasantly surprised by series 10 especially (which is his final series). The end of his run felt like a return to basics which was really needed. Im starting to put series 10 up there with the first five series of the revived show. Writing is surpringly competent
@@geesefeeders1 Yeah, his writing wasn't too great initially but it did get there in the end. And, honestly, it's probably worth watching through at least his second season just to get context and get to that penultimate episode. The one after it may fail to stick the landing but... there's a point where something is so good that whatever happens next can't really touch it.
The problem with the first season of the new Doctor Who was that they were trying to forget the past. It looked like they were trying to do a complete reboot the series. And than the Aliens that they showed were mostly humans that evolved.
Yeah, never really found the Eastenders Who palatable, the whole "I love you" garbage that came later was like spewing in your mouth and had less genuine emotion than a rock, but I'll give my respect to RTD for getting it back into production and to the performance of Eccleston.

WooHoo, Bessy being driven like it's been stolen, by the Dr (Pertwee) 28:54
Awesome shows keep it up mate 👍😃
Nice! Also good shout out for Blazing Saddles - I believe it's the first time farts were introduced in a movie too. And it wasn't funny then either.
Cheers Stam Fine yet another great review 👍
Imo Christopher Ecclestone did a great job of reviving the Doctor Who series and I really liked the harder edge of this series.
21:43 lmao with that screen credit. :-D
I found the fart episode funny in a childish way…lets face it…we all revisit our childhood now and again 😄😉
I think the BBC ruined the series…not because if Jodie Foster…but mainly the scriptwriter…Chris Chibnall 😒 The peak were David Tennant and Matt Smith…were…like..opium to me…I sure…miss…those times😔
Stam Fine is the next Dr Who. He'll be like cheesecake made out of real cheese with an extra sprinkle of carrot.
Christopher Ecceleston is my favorite New Who Doctor, but 4th behind Tom Baker, Colin Baker and Jon Pertwee!
Rose is a favorite of mine.
A great summation
A good Doctor, shame he only got one season. Overall, it was a decent enough season to kick-start the new series. The intimidating new Daleks almost make up for the ridiculous Slitheen. And even they would've been good if their CG look was a bit better and they didn't fart every two seconds.
Loving this.... Buuuuuutt are you going to finish classic Who? That's the question...
yes, in time.
Would you rather silent but deadly
RTD did exactly what was needed to turn a half remembered Sci fi series into must see viewing! And Eccleston totally redefined who The Doctor could be!
half-remembered? I mean, come on who didn't watch Tom Baker after school as the Doctor? Or read the novels at the breakfast table? We were gagging for new Doctor Who. Of course when it did come out it was "new crap" and I haven't bothered with any of the new series. But then you just can't beat Tom Baker. Everything after 9/11 sucks, and none of the young people know any better.
The Cyberman head was the one from the Fifth Doctors era its not from the future.
the helmet from "Dalek" was from 1975's "Revenge of the Cybermen", which at the time was a refurbished helmet from the 60s and had knurled hoses added. that story did take place in Earth's future, when the space traffic beacon had just finished construction and newly in use. probably used as nostalgia bait, and how Van Stratten got it isn't interesting. just that he had it is. Maybe Fenric sent it back through time.
Wait, was that “…frustrating for the time being” or “…frustrating for the Time Being?”
Stamtastic!
My first and only.
My favorite series of Dr. Who.
All vehicles should have a built-in boiling vessel.
Lol, I fart in your General Direction.
Hitchcocky title, could see 'em as Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint.
I love dr who
Stam, so your subway's have Vegan Cheese?! Awesome, not so in Canada. Cheers !
i would have to go to a subway to confirm.
Pretty sure that farting scene was from Blazing Saddles
that was Blazing Saddles wasn't it?
How come we've suddenly gone from Davison to Ecclestone?
Time Travel. Or, I felt like watching some nu-who.
Nice review
A good fart joke can be funny. There are plenty of times they work. It's all about tone and context. Shrek? Great movie. Funny fart jokes. Dr. Who? Probably shouldn't have them.
The key is timing and knowing when enough's enough. I don't think the Slitheen episode succeeded there. It also wasn't helped by the Slitheen laughing about it. Laughing at your own joke is a comedy killer.
@@carlrood4457 Couldn't agree more mate
Back when Doctor Who was good.
Seem to have missed your Season 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 reviews ...?
an accident involving a time machine and a dvd player. i won't bore you with the details.
27:59 actually, it looked like it was grabbed from a sitcom about a stand up comedian and his friends standing around talking about stupid shit.
Its such a shame this show was cancelled after Peter Capaldi's third season.
series 10 was a step up
You have a screen reference wrong. At @12:45 that clip is from "Blazing Saddles" by Mel Brooks, not "Once Upon A Time In The West"
The problem with the first season of the new Doctor Who was that they were trying to forget the past. It looked like they were trying to do a complete reboot the series. And than the Aliens that they showed were mostly humans that evolved.
You forgot to mention Red Dwarf
Yeah, never really found the Eastenders Who palatable, the whole "I love you" garbage that came later was like spewing in your mouth and had less genuine emotion than a rock, but I'll give my respect to RTD for getting it back into production and to the performance of Eccleston.
Remembrance of the Daleks is low-rated? What madness is this? 😂
Ratings as in TV viewers on its original broadcast, not quality rankings
@@StamFine oh I see. Fair enough 👍
My god those 00s outfits and haircuts though
I think you skipped 7 seasons buddy
It’s a bit silly though. Isn’t it?
