Nothing like having to watch yourself on UA-cam from 10 years ago to remember how you did a job...because there's another Jeep that needs it done! The gift that keeps on giving.
Haha! You doing this soon?
@@JeepSolid I was thinking I might. I know I need to replace the oil pan gasket, and thought I might do the rear main at the same time. Still need to crawl under and inspect.
At 9 years old this video is still the best one on this job. I’m not sure if mine needs this, I’ve had some tranny/transfer leaks that I’ve fixed first. About to finish up adding power steering and driving it for a long distance to see if in fact I have a seal leak or not. Great job guys. It’s funny how the video gear/quality has improved as well!
Just did a 98 cherokee. Just be advised many times the oil filter adapter will leak and the oil will make it's way to the back of the engine and look like the rear main is leaking. A few bucks to replace the orings for that and a half hours time. The valve cover also is a common leak spot that will drip to the same area. Point is be sure to check these areas first before assuming it is the rear main.
thanks
Nice job, guys! I'm a retired dealership tech, and you do better work than most of the people I've worked with for years.
+M C Anderson Haha. Thanks!
Do the oil pump your down there allready...
awesome video guys. It's hard to come by good videos like this. Usually I'm looking for a jeep repair video and it's just Jimbob and Cletus that can't hold a camera and talk about their lawnmower without doing what the video title is.
+Chris Armstrong How did you know our real names?
Lol
+Chris Armstrong Haha! That's awesome, Chris! Yeah, there's a lot of bad videos out there. Sometimes you can't even see what they're doing.. Thx for your support!
Great video guys. Just retired and finally getting around to tinkering with me 77 CJ7 and this was my first job. My challenges were to get the top seal out. It was really stubborn. Someone on a forum said loosen all the bearing caps and it should relieve some pressure. But after letting it sit for a couple days with the cap off, I tried one last time and out it came. My other challenge was getting the oil pan to drop off. The one mount was in the away. I removed the plate and jacked up the engine a bit and finally after a lot of rattling and giggling, I manage to get it off. I hope putting it back up is not as much as an issue. Thanks again. Mark
I was dreading this job but after watching this video I feel a bit more comfortable with doing this to my 97 tj.
You guys make great content and it has been very helpful! Thanks!!!!
Very clear video from "amateurs" - oh, like me :) Thanks very much for the clear camera work on the critical points.
Thank you for the video. It helped me to change my rear main seal and oil pan gasket in our 1991 Wrangler 4.0.. we had a leak that was getting worse at the back of the engine.. great video, clear instructions, appreciate it.
Awesome video guys! Very helpful. I thought I would have to drop the transmission to get to the rear main seal. Quite innovative!
Love the videos!!! Very informative and helpful when following along with my repairs.
Just did my 1990 YJ…
Quick tip for upper rear main seal placement:
I was having a hard time inserting the upper seal by hand (even with dish soap & oil)
* I realized that I could use needle nose pliers to gently push the seal into place, reverse of the way I removed it.
Thanks guys keep up the videos❤️🔥
And Keep on Jeepin’ 🤙🏾
Its been over 10 years since I did this on my YJ, well here goes rear main #2 on my newly acquired '88 Comanche! (has a '93 4.0 HO swapped in) Thanks for the tips and video!
This video gave me the courage to finally attempt changing my oil pan gasket and rear main seal on a 1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0. I didn't attempt it before because I thought I would have to remove the transmission. It did take me a little while to get the upper half of the main seal to budge but I finally got it out. Reinstalling it wasn't too bad after I lubed it up w/ soap. After about a week I have no leaks, first time in about 8 to 10 years. I may be able to even remove the cardboard from the floor of the garage. Thanks again for the video.
Dan J That's awesome!! Love the part of removing the cardboard from the garage :)
Nice job on the video guys! Very informative and the camera was where it needed to be to show and give the best explanation! Thanks =)
This is probably the best Jeep rear main seal video on UA-cam. I am doing this to my 1980 CJ5 and the process is exactly the same. Getting visual instructions of this process helps. Thanks!
Did this work? 84 cj7 and terrified of it
@@andrewthixson Yes! It is a little intimidating. Getting the old seal out was easy. Sliding the new one in was very hard. Have to go slow to not damage the new seal. Use the instructions in the video. You really need to make sure you install it in the correct orientation so look at the old one and take pictures especially if it takes you a couple days. I bought two new seals in case I damaged one during the install. They are cheap so might as well. Didn’t end up needing it though.
This video is one of the best DIY videos I have seen on here. Looking to buy my next jeep and it has a bad rear seal so wasn't sure if I wanted to get involved. This video clearly showed me that I can purchase the new toy and fix it myself. Thanks for posting!!!
+Kyle Mccourt Thanks Kyle, glad it helped ya out!
Thanks guys, you just saved me a ton of headache on an 88 YJ.
Nice Job JeepSolid! Video was straight forwards and I have a buddy who owes me a favor, so yeah I think I will tackle this myself too.
I like that you typically include the torque spec and i also like when you include the socket size. It means I get up and down less often.
This is Tazymoto... Thanking you guys for posting. Awesome job, well presented, easily understood. Thank you
+Vartaz “TAZ” Minassian Thanks for watching!
Your video gives me a pretty good idea of what's causing my engine to leak oil and how to fix it. Thanks.
My Jeep Wrangler has the same problem and I believe a leak at the rear main seal also. I just fixed the speedometer now I am ready to tackle this oil drip. Thanks for the video.
Nice work gentlemen, 8 years old and still getting traction. Another subscriber too! 👍👍
you guys did a great job. i have to do the same to my jeep and glad i seen this video. very clear very thorough. Thank you
Great vid. Ive got a 2001 and the exhaust needs to be removed to get at everything but Im still going to do it myself. The bearing info and close up was excellent, thats the thing I was most worried about. Thanks for the good close ups of the process.
Awesome! Glad it t helps.
this has been very helpful to me because my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the same engine with the same problem.
thank you for posting this, got mine off now just gotta get the new one in.
Great video! Doing mine tomorrow. Hope it goes as good as yours did.
Great job guys. Learned a lot.
Can't thank you enough for these excellent, helpful videos!!!!
First thank you for all you do with these videos, they are really good! We followed the instructions to a T but unfortunately the rear seal is still leaking. Anyone else have similar issues?
You are a very good instructor. Clear and Concise with nice video
and caution tips.
I subscribed for sure
Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Hope it helped ya out.
Great video as mentioned before, now I have the confidence to tackle this job!!! GO DUCKS!!!
Thanks for the video, have the same issue on my 08 Unlimited and now I'm confident I can fix it. Thumbs up!
Cool! Thanks for watching.
Great video. Very informative. Got to do mine on my 2000 Wranger. - John from Baltimore
Great video, thanks for posting.
Thanks you for posting this, very helpful.
Thank you for a great video.. It showed me everything I need to know to fix my own... Thanks again..
Great video. I will be doing the same to my xj. I think since I will have the pan off, I will go ahead and save me a possible redo of this and replace the oil pump while I am in there. 116k miles right now. Never know how long that pump will last.
Great video, gotta do this in a couple months. You guys are awesome!
Thanks!
You guys are awesome. Good job. I'm going to do this this weekend!
+Athanasios Manole Nice! Let us know how it goes and any headaches you may run into. Maybe some advice on what you did. Thx!
Beautiful job guys. I think I can do this, should I need to 👍Thanks so much
I'm doing this on a TJ tomorrow, and this video was very helpful. I'll see how it goes.
How did it go?
The top wouldn't come out of the block, but I replaced the bottom half and it hasn't leaked since.
About to replace my gasket. Gods advice, nice vid
I just get this done on xj 1999 it's really simple when you follow the instructions! ! ohh every video for xj said you will need pull off the front axle, I don't!!! just use a extra jack and put it in between top right side of axle and chassis my oil pan came off easy! thanks guys I save some money watching the video!
I'm getting ready to replace the oil pan and rear main seal on 96 xj.were exactly do you put the jack you said between the top right side of the axel and chassis.does that mean behind the right side of the axel with the jeeps chassis resting on the jack?
Driver side! right in the axle between drive shaft and coil spring mount
+zequiel sotomayor ok so Jack up the front axel place a jack stand under the axel between the driver side coil spring and the differential thx.how tall did you sent up the jack stand?
+Exocartonic no I just leave a regular jack till I get done the work but if you want to set up a jack stand it should be OK. safety 1st!
+Exocartonic the jack goes from the axle to the chassis!!
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Got to do mine next.
Thanks for all the great videos!
+Sandmann-Offroad No prob. Thx for watching!
Great video and how to and the tips yall had. Helps a ton.
+Rugger Ray Glad it helped ya out!
Great video ! Very well explained.
Excellent video, very informative. Thank You.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful work thanks !
tomorrow is the day, great video bro 93 yj 2.5
Cool!! Have fun and hope all goes well
Awesome video. Thanks for the help
is it kinda the same for a 04 tj? by putting in the new rear main seal
Nicely done. Keep on jeeping
Excellent video! I don't understand the RTV on the sides of the beveled edge of the cap. Please advise.
Thank you for the wonderful information
Can’t thank you enough, great video!
It's funny how people keep asking if you removed the front axle instead of watching the video... Niice work this will be helpful :)
Really excellent video. I'm a little jealous that your exhaust runs beside and behind the oil pan. On the TJ's it runs under the oil pan.
+Eli Soto Yeah, it's nice and open on the YJ ;)
Clean cut video thanks
awesome video guys. thanks for the info
+mahladik1 Cool! Thx for watching!
This is a great video, I know it has been up for a while but it really is well done and informative. One question, if the wrangler does not have a lift can you jack the frame up off the axle to avoid removing the front axle to get the oil pan out?
Thanks for the video. It went great on an '89. Apparently someone had previously changed only the lower part of the seal. The upper part would not punch out; had to loosen the main bearing caps halfway back on the crank to get the top seal out and just torqued them back down afterwards.
I always enjoy getting under the Jeep for a good project! Thanks for watching!
What did you torque the other bearing caps too? 80?
@@joshuabaker8836 I don't remember! Had to look it up when I did it.
Nice video...great job
.
Thanks for the video
Excellent work, if I do say so myself.
was the bottom half of the seal raised above the bearing cap slightly, and was it difficult to slide the upper half in? I made an attempt at this and failed but am going to try again.
Great video!!
Any Chicago recommendations for Jeep main seal and other Jeep work ? I have a 95 Cherokee 4 cylinder
good video, boys - this job looks super easy in your case ! How was removing the oil pan ? I heard pita stories with working on the starter, exhaust, axle,.... before being able to take the pan out - thanks.
This is next month's project! Can you add the link to the seal and gaskets that you guys used, please?
Good video. Just wish I'd seen it before I did mine.
Did you need to remove the front axle, or can you work around it?
Great video. I would like to replace the rear main oil seal and oil pan gasket but I have a question: What is the torque for the oil pan gasket bolts? Thanks
This is a great video. Is this the same process for a 4.2? I have a 1989 YJ Manual.
There is a little channel in the top portion of the seal (that goes up around the top of the crank). I pulled it out without realizing which way it faced, do you know?
Would this procedure be the same for the 4.2l inline 6?
Very helpful video!Thx!
Thanks!
I learned from working underneath a 59 T-bird that not only do safety glasses keep rust and dirt out of your eyes, but a shower cap keeps them out of your hair, as well. It gets a little warm, though
Thanks for sharing
Hello Jeepsolid, you made sharing what gaskets you went with?. I’m reading reviews that the felpro doesn’t have the friendliest fit.. my valve cover went off without a hitch.. just don’t want to run into an issue once I got the pan down. Thanks for all these cool videos!
Nice video. Wish I had so much room under my XJ LOL
Most mechanics tell me that the Transmission has to be dropped to do this job.. I have a 1995 Jeep wrangler YJ 4.OL straight 6 cylinder. Your video shows it done without dropping the trans. Can I get any advise.
First of all, excellent video! Very helpful, so thank you. The only concern I have is that I was told by an auto mechanic that you have to drop the transmission to get to the rear main seal. Is that false? I have a 98 Jeep Wrangler w/ the inline 6.
Just posting to get an idea just bought a 97 jeep grand cherokee straight 6 and had to replace alternator and t case but now it will sart and run for a bit and turn off any ideas
that is exactly where mine is leaking from too. thanks for the video.
+Errock A Glad it helped ya out. This repair worked really well. Did this job few years ago and still No leaks!
I’m jumping on this project this weekend this video is fantastic! @jeepsolid what type of RTV did you use? I have a 95 YJ which is almost identical
Somehow, the algorithm found me. Great first video!!
Haha! That was long ago. Thanks
Changed my oil pan gasket and rear main seal.... Leaking from rear main seal again. Any thoughts?
Did you have to do anything to the transmission to get to the seal?
Im moving in two days can anyone tell me if the seal can swell over the bolts between the pan and transmission, I cant get those bolts off for the life of me, any advice please
do you put rtv between pan and gasket (i got the same felpro gasket)?
Thanks
Manual [section 9-91] stated the use of 518 Loctite[anaerobic]RTV. It also illustrates a 19mm long strip of RTV on top of bearing cap[not wider than 6mm]. Strip starts just behind the L shape of new gasket to half way point of bolt hole. I don't know what way is best? Sounds like you've done numerous times. What type of RTV did you use?
Old vid, great vid.
Does this work on the 2.5 as well?
Will this work for a 99 TJ 4.0 Wrangler thx
Hi, just came across this great video before replacing my rear main seal. everything went well until I went to insert the upper half of the seal. It was really hard to get into place even when using dish soap. Im sure I put it in the right direction; grooved side facing oil, but it was really tight. Could it just be because its new and not as compressed as the old seal? everyone else seems to be threading their seals in with much less resistance than I experienced. Anyone else out there have this issue?
Is this the same process for a 2.5 4 cylinder???
How many hours did this take to complete?
Thanks
