- Living in California for decades, Adam Carolla has noticed a thing or two about how Americans have become so divided. While some of his fellow Californians have embraced electric cars, others have sized up their trucks, at least in part as an act of rebellion against the progressive status quo. With the added element of mass domestic migration since 2020, Americans are filtering into more and more homogenous communities based on not just politics, but also personality.

I'm GenX and California was an octagon when I grew up there. I moved to Texas two years ago and not Austin aka "Little California." I miss the California I grew up in, but it's never coming back.
Millennial CA native - LA was an octagon but the schools were definitely safe spaces. Sad to see CA go the way it has. Just won’t want to see it spread to the rest of the country.
Want to see what Texas used to be like before all the Californians? Try North Fort Worth. This whole state used to be a paradise before yoga studios and Wiccan supply stores.
@@negativeindustrial I'm not interested in changing Texas culture. I lived in the oilfields of Central California as a kid and I have worked in the oil industry on and off for most of my life. There are plenty of Texans who moved to California in the industry, so I have a pretty good idea what Texans are about.

We came from CenCal, which is pretty red, especially in the burbs, but we had 2 more surprise kids, so we came to a small town (12k'ish ppl) in Oklahoma. Bought a 3 bedroom house that is less than 40 yrs old for less than our 800sq ft apartment in CA costs.
Our big thing is that we can know our kids teachers, and know what they are teaching. We have that here.
It's a pain that I have to get in a car to even go buy a soda now, but when we hear gunshots here, we don't have to worry that it's a robbery,etc. And there are a LOT of gunshots around here.
The fishing here is absolutely incredible, so that might fall directly below the kids issues. Haha

Adam you are 💯 % correct on the homelessness. I am a 32 years of service retired California fire fighter who dealt with homeless on a daily basis. I would say 99% of the homeless people I came in contact with were either drug addicts or severe mental issues and about one percent of people that became homeless due to bad luck. Just like any smart conservative person in Commifornia I moved from the “safe space” to the octagon and absolutely love it here! And no I will not vote Democrat, I don’t want to live in another Commifornia!

@@sbboy333 my firefighter pension honestly it is not as great as people would think. I have Cal Pers retirement with NO medical….. I invested on my own with my money I earned in to a 457 retirement plan and am glad I did. My monthly payment for medical for and vision is 2,594.92. Per month which is just over $31,000 out of pocket for a year. If I were on welfare or illegal I would get free medical. Oh I have COPD from the job and never smoked in my life. I have PTSD from all the death and body mutilations kids and adult deaths I have seen in 32 yrs. I feel I earn my retirement, not to mention the wear and tear on my body from the intense heat and heavy gear. I feel military, police and fire should receive a good pension for what they do for the community and country.
Yet you receive a pension from that Commifornia.

In 1961, with a newly minted first driver’s license, I, along with my parents , embarked on a road trip from northern Wisconsin to California. Upon arrival what I saw was beaches filled with young economically displaced midwesterners, victims of a significant recession. They were living in their pickup trucks and enjoying the warm, inviting climate that they had heard so much about. The gold they found in California was life style not employment. This is the foundation on which California was constructed. Even a 16 year old could see this would not end well.
That's a pretty bizarre take. The foundation upon which California was constructed was laid well over a century before your arrival and differed significantly from your Johnny-come-lately experience.
Central Valley of California is the Texas of California.

I've been following Adam for years and I think he's very aware and smart. He's kind of a modern day Nostradomus except his stuff actually comes true. Read all his entertaining books too.
I called into KROQ and personally spoke to Mr Burchim about structural issue with some stairs on my property. I thought I was calling to some shop teacher who didn’t know diddily-Scott about construction. Sure enough I talked to him for about 30 minutes on the issue. So off I go to city planning and they instructed me on how the whole remodel of the staircase would go down. I compared my notes to Mr Burchims and did it all myself, with city planning checking off on the project. I saved me some cash back then, like 30 years ago. And every time I visit that property I’m reminded of that conversation. I’m glad I talked to him and dig his shows and interviews. He’s in his own element cool with life.
When he starts rattling off Simpson part numbers and telling people where to install them it cracks me up. I design all of the structure of the big apartment building going up around Texas. Well, as many as I can get, anyway.

Well it was actually President Reagan. He believed “the experts” when they said they could handle the mental illness problem. In reality, the mental health community wanted the money for private treatment instead of those people being under state institution care where they didn’t make any money. It’s was one of two major mistakes Reagan made. The other being illegal immigrant amnesty.

The bulk of mental institutions in the United States were closed in the 50's and 60's well before Reagan. Also, only federal institutions were ever closed under Reagan, not state institutions and they were defunded as part of an omnibus spending bill. Also, it is illegal to intitutionalize anyone against his or her will in the US. See O'Connor v. Donaldson.

Moderate that leans conservative and a college educator in Kansas. I have students from all over the country and describing this generation as "crate trained" couldnt be more apt. Some of these kids are literally afraid to acknowledge, let alone agree on, what is obviously objective reality. The individuals who seem to want to point that out are often attacked by their peers and they invariably lose social standing on campus. I will say that it seems to have peaked a few years ago and I see more and more logic being injected into conversations and observations every day.

If it weren't for the great California weather, I don't understand why anyone who has a choice would want to live in California.
I have the choice and find it difficult to leave. It is absolutely the weather and geography, and what it has enabled. I drove up the coast last weekend to wine tasting and have great meals. I need to replicate that elsewhere before I can commit to fully leaving.
It isn’t just the weather; it’s also the geography. California has majestic mountains - some good for skiing. There are deserts that bloom in the spring with unusually pretty flowers out of their cacti, impressive giant, redwood forests in the northern areas, and many lakes, especially in the northern areas. The state has astonishing cliffs off the Pacific Coast Highway, coasts of different beaches to suit different tastes, colorful flowers and semi tropical plants along the mid and southern coastal areas. There are beautiful national parks, hot springs and even a volcano. You can also find small farms all over, even in the mid size cities; you can always buy fresh produce year round.
Large cities of course have their problems - like most large cities throughout the country - but if you explore the rest of the state, there is plenty to see and enjoy.
Jobs have been more abundant than many other places. Housing is expensive, but the job pay is higher.
It’s not the perfect place, especially when it comes to politics, but no place is 100% perfect.
Great food, awesome beaches. Great fishing and hunting. Tons of wilderness and camping .
The weather isn’t even worth it anymore, nor is the beach. I left, and I cannot tell you how many people I know are leaving or planning on doing so. California is social experiment on the taxpayers dime.

I have always liked Adam. It’s obvious he really thinks about his observations and does a great job initiating thoughtful discussion. The polarization effect of differences is definitely spun up with social media. It’s almost like a evolution of human behavior when most of the population can be spoon fed filtered political, events news, conspiracy theories, group think etc. The kids who are between 14-18 today have a really different way they treat social media information, news etc. They definitely question the reality of the information far more than say a 25yr old and definitely have a different way of looking at digital media news social etc than say a 40-70 yr old. Id say they are far less likely to be duped simply because they have been immersed in this new reality and its outcomes their entire life so far. They do question sources of information and look at it with a critical eye more so out of ingrained habit than other generations.
You look at all the drama today and the drama queens are pretty much 40yrs and up in age. Definitely brings up the need for our country to consider term limits in our politics and age considerations ie what is too old to be a governing office holder?
The gap between differences will definitely increase with social media engineering!! But I suspect the extreme examples like women’s health differences have just about hit the max tolerance for level of extremism in our country. We definitely have bigger external problems we as a country should be looking at vs the crazy extremism drama playing out between states and minority groups within our country today.

There are many sane people left. Look at the 2016 voting map. Most of California is Red except for sf Bay area, LA area and a sliver on the coast. The rest are conservative. Most vehicles here are V8 trucks not electric cars.

News flash: I live in Ventura County. Last year we bought a new Chevy Tahoe. Just replaced my Jetta with a Malibu. Local Chevy dealer told me they are selling nothing but SUVs and Pickups and lots of people are not going to buy a EV. Tesla sales are plummeting. Its a very nuanced story.
This is so personally hilarious. I drive a Ram 2500 pickup and my wife has a Tesla. Maybe we're old fashion, but we get along just fine.

California now has only one positive factor and it's overwhelmingly positive. Prop. 13 keeps your property taxes from skyrocketing when we get into a housing bubble. No other state has anything similar. There are several states in the US where you may not be able to afford your property taxes when your house goes up in value. This particularly affects older people on a fixed income.
If property taxes followed home values, easily at least half of people would leave. My home appreciate 5x since I purchased and that’s the main reason I’m not planning moving anywhere in state because prices and taxes.

His analogy of the party, it goes both ways. I lived in Utah for years, the safe space there was being a conservative Mormon. Since I didn’t adhere to that, I stopped getting invited to the parties…aka I didn’t get the job promotion, I didn’t get the pay raise, eventually I didn’t have a job. So I moved to California and started my own business. Adam isn’t wrong, he’s just looking at it from his perspective and saying “it’s them doing it.” When in reality it’s happening on both sides.
I mean, Utah is an extreme example. It’s literally designed to be a Mormon State.

I tend to disagree. The issue of personal freedom, economic freedom, and capitalism versus the Maoist communism of CA, NY, etc, it isn't going to go well--at some point these far apart ideologies will clash, especially as CA continues to sink economically due to exceedingly poor collectivist policy choices.

Not all of the homeless are junkies or mentally ill. Many working homeless are living in their cars, old RVs and tents. The housing shortage is a big factor. I voted to recall Newsom and voted for Larry Elder who had a plan to suspend the California Environmental Quality Act to free up developers to build more housing and get the costs down.
Adam is smart, but can’t see how awful Jimmy Kimmel is, it’s a bit off. Also, his channel barely has any subscribers and I’m pretty sure that someone on the inside doing that.

When I was stationed in California, I was a forward observer with a PRC. At night the guys would love it when I would tune in Adam and the doctors sex talk show. I don’t remember a whole lot from what they said because you learn a lot about sex when your a Marine.
One thing I do remember is a kid that called in and was asking about bleaching and dying his pubic hair. Adam yelled out “don’t fk with your nutz dude”.

I'm just glad I grew up in northern New England where 4x4 pickups are pretty much a necessity to drive in the snow and ice for half the year (plus mud season), versus these urbanite cowboys with manicures merely _acting_ the part in their pretty lifted pickups.

The one thing about this discussion. I don't like using the word need. No 1 need 1 of those big trucks. That's probably true. However, no one needs a 12000 square foot mansion. With the pool.

I'd also point out people get addicted to drugs when they have no other hope in life, you look at the poorest places in the country with no jobs and they have the highest drug use and overdoses, etc.

I was homeless years ago and it was definetly by choice and drug related.....I just gave up and didn't care was bottom line
This is by far most of the cases for homeless.....tiny % are there because of poor choices and bad circumstances....even back then people would refuse help cuz it meant you had to be clean.......there is always help if you want it in the U.S.

Adam made a good observation about the division on Electric Vehicles and Big Pickup Trucks but I don’t see it in a Versus optics. I see it as a Tax regulation loophole in one of the highest Tax states in the country. People who miss the EV tax rebate capitalizing on the more than 6000lbs vehicle rebate. If you have a 1099 you know this.

Nobody is forcing anyone to buy EVs, there are incentives for EVs just like how the government provides billions of dollars to oil and gas companies. It’s good to have options and I don’t support the ban of ICE in CA at all.

I live in a small town in CA most people commute daily to Sacramento very little electric cars on my commute mostly Toyotas and Dodge Trucks I don’t think we ever have charging stations 😂 but the people that live in sac full of electric cars with no commute 🤦♂️
