- HongisBored so he spent a day exploring the once-hippest mall of Singapore, Far East Plaza. The past is partly gone, but the mall held many new surprises for him & Jiejie. We found a Japanese restaurant that looked straight out of a film. A leather craftsman radiating ikigai. But seriously, we ate too much. Enjoy this tour.

@@freshbreadloaves Ah Melbourne… good place. I miss that rainbow bridge, going to st kilda’s to watch the penguins before they fenced up the pier and the superbly authentic Vietnamese food! Didn’t think our videos would be a ‘Singapore fix’ for Singaporeans living abroad, but it seems we have been proven wrong according to some comments. Enjoy touring the old malls when you’re back! But meanwhile, enjoy the weather down south!

I remember how the cemented down sitting area came to be. The entire design of FEP is inspired by US and Japan malls with outdoor sitting, it was part of the shopping mall complex building war that was happening across Asia throughout 80s to 90s before the AFC happened to show that they're modernizing and an attractive business hub for foreign investments. The whole area was provided by the mall management FOC to be shared by Dunkin Donuts, LJS and one more fast food chain which I forgot(I think it was Wendy's). Back when people like to go TGIF to club or go Woodstock rooftop bar to drink, after hours always got ah bengs like to take the chairs and fight. Management eventually decided to replace the movable tables and chairs with cemented in versions of it. Eventually FEP popularity fizzled out, and all the fast food restaurant closed down, so now become sitting area for people to rest or eat their tabao food.
Omg what a history! So we must thank the ah Beng’s for this outdoor seating!!! 🤣

我在新加坡工作去烏節路也會去Far East Plaza 吃鹹蛋豬排飯，就是你吃的那間，我覺得好好吃，新加坡有很多好吃的食物，最懷念魚圓麵和香菇肉挫麵，剪刀剪咖哩飯，雞飯，小販中心賣的鬆餅，Laksa，Arnold's Chicken ，滷麵，台灣都吃不到這些味道。

Did you know the very first Famous Amos in Singapore opened in Far East Plaza in the early 1980s? The famous Amos guy himself came to the store for the grand opening.

Are the original chef and waitress team still at wasabi tei? Notorious for being super grumpy but food was good and reasonably priced. Last went more than a decade ago.
Not sure who’s the original grumps 😅 First time we went, service was good, at the old shop. Second time I went at the new shop, a little grumpier. But actually still ok once we kind of understood their system haha

Just chanced upon your videos and I am enjoying them! Love the banter you have with your sis, both are so entertaining. The Thai restaurant with the boy with braid logo named Krapow has really good food! The Thai food is authentic and this restaurant is a place I would go whenever I go to FEP.

When I visited Singapore before the pandemic, I lived in the Grand Hyatt. Therefore, the Far East Plaza was a must-go place. Old Chang Kee and the money exchange at the Far East Plaza impressed me the most.
Nice! I suppose old chang kee does provide very tasty snacks for visitors. Never really noticed the money changers to be honest haha
10+ years ago, the wasabi tei boss very grumpy bad temper guy. All the customers eating there must tolerate his black face...only dare to ask special things (like more ginger) to his wife who will secretly pass to us.
I’ve went there twice, with varying levels of service. I’m not entirely sure which one is the boss. But allow me share my recent experience with everyone who might read this comment.
First time I went, everything was chill and good, really nice.
2nd time I went, the staff-on-duty wanted to get everyone to order their first round of orders fast, and told customers to try to order everything at one go, if not, they might get their items way slower, coz manpower is lean at the restaurant.
After looking at how the chef prepares, I kind of understand what he means. I realized that the way they operate is to prepare similar dishes of different diners, all at once. So if people ordered as and when, it’ll cause a big disruption to their workflow. And they do really have a tiny team. But once they finished the first bulk of the order, things actually get a lot less tense, and the staff tend to become friendlier.
I would say that this is the kind of old shop that has some of its quirks and systems that customers might have to abide by. But factoring the overall experience, food, price, service, ambience, I feel it’s still a superb bang-for-the-buck. 😊
Notwithstanding that, we might have interacted with different staff. Just sharing my 2 cents worth. Cheers!

Wasabi tei is highly recommended for this place, lunch time can have long queue, freshness is there, cutting is thick and portion are great.

If you get a chance, you can try the Turkish food that you walked by. The one next to Ya Kun. It's quite good. The hummus is nice and I liked their grill. The kunefe is really really good too.

Think the manicure shops has closed down quite a bit. The last time I was here in 2018 when my Japanese nailist at Delfi Orchard quit.. and the Japanese manicure shop here fill the gap. The shop is still here till now.
Now got quite a lot of manicure shops. Not sure how it compares to the past though. 😊

Looks much better now, last went early 2022 and the lights were dark in a lot of areas with most of the shops closed. It was so bad even the seedy massage shops opened up at lvl 5. The management really put in effort to revive the mall post-pandemic, time to bring my wife go see see again
