- HongisBored so he spent a day going to audiophile heaven, The Adelphi. We found an incredible outdoor gear & army shop. Spotted some vintage vinyls. Had an amazing chup chye png lunch. And of course, listened to some top-notch sound system. And were shocked by the prices of course 😂
鸿闷了，跟姐姐到了音响圣地，City Hall的Adelphi走走。我们找到了一家有趣的户外用品店，看了一些复古的黑胶唱片。另外还吃了一顿棒棒的杂菜饭。最后，当然也试听了一些高档的Hi-Fi. 价格可能会让你吃惊！

Speaking about MD players i still have quite a few blank sealed MD. It was during an era when I was converting some cassette recordings into MD. I also converted some CDs too. The quality is indeed very good. I had a Sony MD Walkman and I think it was about 520 when I bought it at SIM lim square during that era. I got it repaired once for worn out rubber. It is sad that now they do not service the player anymore. I am more painful about some of the cassette audiobooks I have.
Cassette audiobooks? Were they a thing of the past? I thought audiobooks only started with the Spotify generation. Today I learnt!

U mentioned abt owndays being the 1st few spectacle shops to offer self-service option... actually back in the late 90s or early 2k, there's a shop in Toa Payoh Central already doing this due to lack of manpower. The uncle will tell us to help ourselves to try spectacle frames on display while he serves other customer. So we will usually roamed the shop like nobody's business 😁
Not sure if that shop is still around as the owner was probably already in the 60s (unless his son who was overseas takes over the biz)

Tony Cafe is very busy. Many office workers and people who know the cafe go there to eat. There was another cafe SideWalk Cafe (beside Treasury) offered even better pricing than Tony. Everyone who wants to eat at these places got to go early like 11 am onwards.
The linkway to Funan was up during Covid period.

I always come here for a coffee at coffee hive at basement whenever I passby the are. What I felt in Adelphi is it is a clean, bright and quiet shopping mall that is cater for vintage cameras, records and Hi-Fi systems. I seldom go Funan as it is more crowded. This is one of the older mall that is being well kept, compare to the other older malls around.

@@HongisBored Good for the average. I go to coffee hive because I have their membership card, I bought their prepaid card for more discount. They have several branches in Singapore. However I prefer to eat at their branch in Adelphi because I felt their Rosemary Chicken set with rice taste better here, maybe my tastebuds playing tricks on me. Haha.. Drinking coffee is like eating durian. If you go kopitiam buy those under $2 coffee, you won't feel the difference. You still enjoy your cup of coffee. But when you up the game level to those higher end Coffee Chains, then you will feel the difference. And you will spent more and harder to quit the habit to lower your tastebud. If you start only with the $1-$5 durian a fruit kind, you also can get well balance version. And you won't yearn for more. However if you start your palette on Musang king, Black Thorn, those higher end type. You start to lost interest in the cheaper one. However with higher inflation and higher cost of living. I am now more sensitive to what I spend on. You will be surprise how much you can save if you stop visiting high end restaurants a month.
Basically you can go from Adephi to Funan, City Hall, Capitol, City Link or Raffles City Underground, Marina Square, Suntec, Millenia Walk, Esplanade by walking without using an umbrella.
City Hall MRT, Esplanade Mrt, Promanade MRT are all interconnected Underground or by malls.
True story. Only peninsular plaza will kena some rain coz from Capitol walk over still got one short part no shelter. Otherwise it’s hyper-connected

That mall has quite a few shoe shops, clothes shops, 2nd hand camera shops, watch shop and some guitar shop below.

Don’t need a video but it’s 100% worth it cause it inherited the fried wings recipe from one of Singapore’s first fried chicken wing rice stalls which was located in the old Funan Mall which then became a Franchise called Carona (with the halal version of the franchise stores being named Cavana). The Funan store and the franchise disappeared years ago but Tony Cafe managed to get the recipe for the chicken wings and I believe the chilli as well from them.
I don’t know how u know the history but I’m impressed! 😅 I think I had it before long long ago. Will have it again when I pass by Adelphi once more 😊🙏🏻

On a personal level I’m pretty certain it’s true cause my parents loved the OG Funan fried chicken wing rice and I grew up on Carona and Cavana - the taste of the chicken wings from those OGs are still carved in my bones so when I first tried Tony’s I was already pretty certain that there had to be some connection

Finally visited one of my favourite mall. You should have noticed that this mall is very well maintained despite its age, clean, has a nice smell and the sound proofing is very good- which makes it a good place for audio shops. Unfortunately hifi has gone downhill long ago and some of the hifi shops have also moved to industrial hubs due to rentals. You are right that some of the hifi shops can look intimidating and some shop owners are rather arrogant. Steven is probably the friendliest shop owner there. The boss - Richard from Roxy records and CDs is also very friendly. One thing I don’t like about some of the shops there is that they don’t follow the opening hours stated and just put their phone numbers on the door.
You might not have known that there was a period where there was a number of kinky massage shops mainly in the basement. You go basement for food and you will get catcalls from the working ladies in those shops. This was reported in the news as the mall is just next to the Supreme Court and I think there are also a number of law firms above the mall. 简直是在太岁头上动土，无法无天。The management took action swiftly and now the mall is clean again. However there is still one corner of the basement outside a pub which I avoid because it stinks of cigarettes smell. Can smoke inside the pub meh…..

From my understanding...British English pronounce herb with the 'h' while American English don't. By right, Singapore follow the British standard. Think same for lettuce but got to check to be sure.
