  • Ah, the 50mm full-frame perspective. It's a classic, and one that photographers have been shooting for seemingly ever. For Fuji, that means we have three main options to choose from for fuji-branded primes:
    The XF 33mm f/1.4 amzn.to/3IuWV5Y
    The XF 35mm f/1.4 amzn.to/3yvyTTU
    The XF 35mm f/2 amzn.to/3RoyQSk
    In this video I look at all three lenses and give some insight into using them all, plus some recommendations.

    Hi Jerred, thanks for all of the sample pics in the Fuji X Passion article. Really appreciate your different use cases which help justify my situation...I first bought the 35 f/2 with my first Fuji XT-20 which I continue to love as a walk around lens....and then later on the 1.4 to check out the "magic", especially with portraits and then fairly recently finally the newest 33 which I shot for a live event and agree the focus was dead on. I too love the 50mm focal length and don't think I'll let any of them go. Cheers,

    Thank you so much for comparing with the 35mm F2! So many comparison videos when the 33mm f1.4 initially came out were just between it and the 35 f1.4 and it made me so disappointed xD

    I've owned the 35 f1.4 since I first got into the Fuji system back in 2014 and it's one of my favorites. One of the positive things about this lens (for me) is that it doesn't have a "hot spot" when shooting on my infrared camera. But I have to say that the 33 f1.4 is very intriguing and looks great (I wonder how it does on infrared?). My first SLR camera was also a Pentax K1000. I had a 50mm and a 135mm lens. Sometimes I think I should try limiting myself to those two lenses (35mm and 90mm Fuji lenses) and see what I can create. Great video, Jerred!

    • @JerredZ
      @JerredZ  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Terry. I hear you on all of that. Does the lack of hot spot work even with an R73 filter, or only with your converted stuff? And... I really really love the 33 if you can't tell. I'm taking it out tomorrow for a big photo trip in Nebraska, and I can't wait to get more out of it.

    When I bought my XF35 f1.4 in 2014 it was the only game in town. It was my first Fuji lens & one I'll never part with. I love that lens, oh man that crushed beer can hood is neat. Since I've moved to current model bodies the focus has improved a lot. I have shot with the f2 & it's nice, but since I have the f1.4 I figure I'm good. The 33mm looks to be a winner, but that price hurts this old guy in the wallet. ;-) Nice video Jerred keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the great comparison. I would love that 33 f1.4, but it's not in my budget as an amateur. I'm in the f2 league. Question: Of the 35mm f2 and the 50mm f2, which would you say is the sharpest? Thanks again for this video, have a great week.

    • @JerredZ
      @JerredZ  2 роки тому +2

      Charlie - my gut tells me the 50 might be sharper, but I just went and reviewed some images. That might just be that I shoot the 50 much closer - the 50 has impressive close-focus distance, and I don't shoot the 35 quite as close. So honestly it's probably a wash between the two. Maybe I'll do a video comparing the two? :) I just dotted it down for an idea!

    I have the 33mm 1.4 (with an xt2) and I do enjoy the fast focus and the sharpness to a degree. I think this video helped me to decide which to get actually. Focus is important to me for pictures of my daughter and fleeting street moments and I do like sharp. However, I’d say the sharpness of the 33mm is a bit too clinical and the bokeh is not as smooth as I’d like (you notice it, it’s almost distracting), so now I find myself hankering after the 35mm 1.4. Have a quick look on the Flickr groups for each of these lenses; I think the differences in IQ are apparent there.

  • @mikefoster6018
    @mikefoster6018 11 місяців тому

    I just got the 33mm f1.4. I know some street photographers say it's too zoomed-in/tight for street stuff. But I'm so glad I got it and not a wider lens.
    I feel like wider lenses (18mm etc) can create bad habits because they give a dynamic feel to boring scenes. I'd rather have to work a bit harder to find each composition but then have it feel more natural, and the basically distortion-less 33mm gives me that.
    (And that's not just me theory-crafting. The 16-55mm has been my main lens for two years, so I know when going wide got lazy.)

    • @JerredZ

    • @torb-no
      @torb-no 10 місяців тому

      @@JerredZ'Magic' is a word people use when they struggle to describe og quantify why they like a lens, typically because of other characteristics that are focused on (resolving power / sharpness and completely smooth out of focus areas).
      But you totally can describe what's special about that lens and many have done so. Among them is Gilmer Creative which has en entire character review on it: ua-cam.com/video/v1mpIqwoIj8/v-deo.htmlsi=9VI3K6J1oK-pE2To
      But the short version is: slight highlight blooming makes for pleasing skin tone (makes certain features softer), field curvature makes the background be more defocused towards the middle making subjects pop, not the most vibrant colors. In short: in many ways it renders more like a classic film camera era lens, like a nifty fifty of old (it uses a double gauss optical formula and everything, and the slow lens focus is due to it moving an entire focus group, again like an old school lens).
      Personally I'm happy with the rendering of my f2 (love the strong colours), and I'd probably rent the 33 for serious jobs, but I totally get why some love the 35mm f1.4.
