- What is known as the most versatile focal length because it offers an angle of view like the human eye? Maybe you are a beginner but you already heard about the "Nifty Fifty", a lens with a 50mm focal length (or equivalent) that renders images close to the true perspective of the human eye.
In the Fuji-X system we are using an APS-C sensor, so a 35mm corresponds most closely to the 50mm in full format. So let's talk about Fujifilm's 35mm Prime Options: The XF35mm ƒ1.4, the XF 35mm ƒ2 (and also the XC 35mm ƒ2).

Had the F1.4. Sold it and bought the F2. I missed the F1.4 so much that I sold the F2 and got the F1.4 back. Long journey but for me… The F 1.4 is magic.

For my work i never use f1.4 and thus never really missed it. Stuck with the more reliable Auto Focus f2.

The 35mm f/2 lens is designed specifically for the X -Pro3 (and the previous 1 & 2). The slightly conical shape of the lens is to minimize the obstruction of the X pro 0VF. That “silly” lens hood, with the vents cut in the metal, is also to minimize obstruction of the OVF. When the len hood is in place, it does block the Ovi F. The holes in the lens hood are to allow you the ability to see through the lens hood at your subject.

I’ve had both and they are both great. In the end, I use my 1.4. I no shoot a lot of portraits and love the look of it. For street, I like the 23mm on my X100V. If I had the cash, I’d have both the 35’s!
Im facing the even tougher decisiopon of which one I should buy. In the end my decision fell onto the 1.4 just because it was almost as cheap as the f2. Now I'm sitting here well knowing i will buy the f2 sometimes soon as well. Danke für das informative Video :)
Great side-by-side comparison of these two. I've gone back and forth a couple of times, but ultimately settled on the 35/2 for its slightly smaller form factor and weather sealing, which I have come to appreciate for hiking and humid summers here in the American South. It's hard to beat the magic of the 1.4 when you need it and that lens really does render in a special way, but as an all-around, everyday lens for the Fuji system, I'd have to say the 35/2 is the way to go. Put the couple-hundred in savings towards another lens like the (very good) 50/2. Or buy some photo books to spark inspiration. :)

Yeah, that's also something to keep in mind. I tested the Viltrox 56mm (as you maybe know) but that's the only Viltrox I have experience with. But as a lot of third party stuff may come this year to the Fuji-X System we have a lot to compare. ; ) Thx for watching and stay tuned....
Had both of these lenses in the past and agree 100% with your conclusions (wish I remembered why I sold them?).
Have a soft spot for the f1.4 ,the size and balance on my X-T1 was fantastic and just something special in the images and colours?
Recently realised how much I miss the 50mm (equivalent) fast prime in my bag ...and today I’ve bought the Viltrox 33mm f1.4 for €170 mint boxed on eBay....just have to give it a go at that price ...if it delivers and I keep it great ....But if not I have to make the choice again and you video will come in handy Thankyou.

Really nice, actually the cheaper option really deliveres surpringsingly well, so you are absolutely correct, if weatherseeling is not needed.
....and if you don't need the aperture ring. But good to hear, that it also works good.
I use the f:2 a lot for portraits. Amazing quality results with my xt3
I've done so much Photoshop working at a custom lab and the San Francisco Film Society that I would shoot with the f2 and blur the background in post. Keeper shots are one in 20 for portrait so I don't worry about hours of post. I even use the Viltrox 85mm 1.4 wide open for bokeh on tripod and then reshoot the subject whatever it is around f 6.1 or more. Then I add the wide open bokeh to the background of the stopped down shot.
To be honest, my goal is to do less in post production than more. So that's not exactly my personal approach. But maybe someone else will come up with the idea. Thanks anyway.

thanks for walking us through this! I struggle with this decision myself, as I'm shooting with the 56mm f/1.2 and 16mm f/1.4 just for hobby photography. I was thinking that whatever I can do with the 35mm focal length, I could backpedal and use the 56mm. But often, it feels tedious or forced
Also, I sold the 16mm f/2.8 for the 16mm f/1.4. Would never regret this choice. Comparing size, the 16mm f/2.8 felt too tiny for the XT3... I wonder if I would find that an issue with the 35mm f/2, for example, or if I would welcome the lighter weight.
As you can see in my video, the decision is particularly difficult here because both 35mm options are justified. ;)
As for the 16mm: I completely agree with you, the 1.4 simply makes a huge difference to the smaller lens. Thx for watching!
Thanks for sharing the video and tests, sorry for the long read. Im a wedding photographer and used to have both of these. When covid 19 came, i had to make a decision to sell one. For me Its was obvious which one had to go.
I am in the business of capturing real moments with only split second opportunities. Here Its vital I have fast AF and simply cannot afford to wait for slow AF motor to catch up to the scene. So the F2 version was a clear winner here.
Also When I checked my data and saw that most of my aperture settings where from F2- F5.6 with the average around f3.2. Even with my 56mm f1.2 I never used anything under F2. Keep in mind i need sharp in focused images that require enough depth field to have both eyes sharp and if i can get the nose in focus even better.
I tested both for sharpness and did some extreme unnecessary pixel peeping and with my eyes I couldn’t see any difference whats over ever. There is only a slight very slight difference in the background softness. But but the f2 gives you plenty of that anyway. My experience is unique and I can understand of others prefer the f1.4, thats also an amazing lens but if your doing similar reportage to me. Maybe consider the f2

Interesting take. Have you considered swapping the 56mm for the 50mm just for the faster auto focus?
@@Isaac-do3sx there is a lot of variables there. It’s not that B&W, Firstly the 56mm f1.2 AF is a lot better then the 35mm f1.4 regarding AF, going from the 56mm f1.2 to the 50mm F2, yes it’s a step up with AF but not like a giant leap as the the 35mm options.
You can still get a good ratio of action shots in focus using the 56, although I agree the 50mm F2 is better. I actually have both and basically use the 50mm for the action stuff especially outdoors. But I am now considering selling both for the 50mm f1.0. I probably won’t save much on cost and weight, but having less gear, less to lug around and also changing lenses less often is an attractive option.
Well I must mention that you made subtle movements for the f2 not so for the f1.4. However, I have both lens and you are absolutely right. The f1.4 is an opportunistic lens while the f2 is very reactive lens. Well said when you explain (and I paraphrase) “the f1.4 for portraits and the f2 for street”. I complete agree! Great video big brother keep them coming!
With the movements you mean the video AF? I need to check this, but it doesn't change my general opinion about the AF. But these comparisons should be fair, so thank you for the hint. And also for watching!

Just borrowed the so called slow 1.4 version that is supposed to be so noisy….. man this lens is unbelievable. I use full frame Sonys for my weddings. Bought the xt4 to try out. It’s not as good as sony but …. I have used it for some small gigs seen Will I take it to weddings and I was on the fence until I tried the 35 1.4, it’s so much fun to use. Even in mechanical the xt4 is very quite. I find that if I have it set to single point and the square small. Continuous tracking so I’m controlling the where then it locks on and tracks brilliant. Not as well as sony but it feels nicer and the image quality from the 35mm at 1.4 This combo makes me want to carry my camera everywhere :)
Thanks Darren. But if you have the chance, try out the new 33mm f1.4. It provides the same IQ with much more faster AF an weather sealing. It comes with the cost of a larger body but it’s still compact enough. All the best!

I own the X-pro1 since November (came with the 18/2), bought the 35/1.4 and the 23/2.
AF wise the Camera is a different beast with the newer 23/2. focusses faster and nearly silent. Not so with the original lenses. They perfectly workable though. The images coming out of the 35/1.4 are great. Just a different vibe to the 23/2. I d say more pastel colors and an organic look whereas the 23/2 has more contrast.
I was tempted to get the 35/2 as well, just to compare. Some sell locally for 250 chf. I like the compactness and looks of the f2 ones. I am just a hobby photographer and I am fine with f2. Had the x100t for 5 years as my only camera, never a problem with f2.
I d say the magic of the 1.4 comes out in portraits the most. If you mostly shoot streets and document life around you, I think the f2‘s are perfect. Faster, silent & more compact.
Also if you like to use OVF the f2‘s don‘t get in the way. I think if someone is serious about photography or a pro, you could very well own both 35‘s for different situations.

Thank you Michel and cheers back to the beautiful Schweiz! I can really recommend the 35mm f2, also in addition to the f1.4, Of course it seems a little bit crazy, but this focal length is so versatile and the two can be used on so different occasions that I don't regret keeping both.

I bought the 23/2 to see how the newer f2 lenses perform on the old diva being X-Pro1 (much faster and near silent - I have to say though that I like the feeling of the older lenses, the camera feels less digital and clinical with them - can you understand that 🤔) and to get the same focal length as my X100T in order to replace it.
I am a minimalist at heart and like the idea of 1 camera only. I mean I am just a hobby photographer, I don‘t need multiple gear. Less gear more shooting!
But here we are and I have an X-Pro1 with 3 lenses, X100T (first Fuji and only camera for the last 5 years) and a Nikon FE with two lenses (adapting to the X-Pro1 as well).
I start to realise why I got the X100T in the first place, 1 camera, 1 lens. less is more!
I really like the X-Pro1. Something about the shooting experience. I prefer it over the X100T.
The body fits my hands better. But the X100T is just so compact, you can stick it in your jacket no problem.
So I wonder if I should downsize my lenses on the X-Pro1 to just the 35. (Sell the 23/2 - maybe keep the 18/2 mh maybe not 🤔 and keep the X100T with the 23/2.

I believe less is more and too much gear gets in the way. I could very well see myself just owning the X-Pro1 with the 35 (even both of them 🙄) and get the most out of it. I am still learning, makes sense to stick to one focal length...for the moment.

Owned both, gotta say the f/1.4 is fantastic especially if you have a newer body. The autofocus is much faster and the aperture chatter seems to be a lot quieter! But for video, you still probably better off with the f/2 but the focus breathing is quite horrible actually.
Even if I also liked the 1.4 a lot I can’t agree to your last point as focus breathing is terrible with the f1.4 regarding video. The f2 is much, much better.
My goal when switching to Fujifilm from Canon was less weight, less weight, cost savings. Therefore, I chose the 35 f2 as one of the lenses I purchased to go with my XT-3. . The faster auto focus and WR pushed me that way. I'll just have olive with bumping up the ISO in lower light situations. Nice review Johan!

You mean the 50mm f2? Yes, I did. It's really a nice option, even if I find myself shooting more with the 56mm options I own (f1.2 and f1.4 from Viltrox)...
I personally do manual focus photography only, so the 1.4 is my choice. 35 f2 version is really awesome though.

Can I ask if you tried both lenses in MF? I've just ordered the 35 f2 as my first fuji lens. Been using Fuji cameras for years with legacy glass. But have not been impressed by the focus-by-wire design. Does one of these lenses feel better to manually focus from the other..? thanks
Definitely the 35mm ƒ2! Even if it still is "by wire" its noiseless and fast. Thats a big advantage compared to the ƒ1.4
A FF 52mm lens reproduces the same way the human eye sees. A 35mm on a crop sensor is still a slightly wide angle. It's still a 35mm regardless of the size of the sensor. (Sorry, Micro 4/3rd fans.)
I have sold 2.0/35, regretting it ever since and planning to buy it again. When I want that 1.4 look I use my Leica 1.4/50 Summilux via Fujifilm M to X mount adapter that makes it equivalent to 75mm.
I also sold the f2 once and bought it back after some time. It's so small and fast and I really love it on my X-Pro3 now. A Summilux is of course a great thing to adapt... I am a little jealous... ; )

Thank you for the informative video. I have a question. I use the Fujifilm XT-1 with XF 18-135 zoom lense. I take mostly photos. of ships arriving and leaving port and of landscapes. Do you think that the XF 35 F2 would give me good results for photographing ships passing close by?
I don’t know anything about your point of view, but if you have the right distance, it should work. Try out the 18-135 at 35mm. If it fits for you, the 35mm f2 will be an excellent choice.
Hello! I love the color of that one color photo with the person and the backpack ... is that all in camera settings and color profile or is that post edit? I would really like to know how one gets their photos to look like that with those colors.
It's definitely straight out of camera and it's definitely Classic Chrome. The rest is unfortunately lost... I guess it's a setting out of the book by Thomas B. Jones that maybe someday will be released in englisch. Thx for watching!
Had the 35 f1.4 and sold it to get the new 33 f1.4. Immediately regretted it and got the 35 f1.4 again. I have both 35s (1.4 and 2) for the same reasons you described.
Why did you regret it? Was it the price/value?

Momentan eher die X100V, das 23mm f2 ist aktuell meine Videolinse (auf dem Stativ zumindest). An der X-Pro3 hab ich aktuell hauptsächlich die 35er.
I have just replaced my 35mm F2 with a new silver version which I see is now made in the Philippines. I have to say that my 18-55mm kit lens performs better at 35mm than the prime lens in my real world photography.

No way, I sold my 18 55 because there are so many better performers in the Fuji line up. I don't miss it at all.
Nice objective comparison, thanks. In 2021 Fuji is supposed to come out with a 33mm f1.4 lens, which hopefully will incorporate the advantages of the both the 35mm f1.4 & f2, with a slightly wider focal length and depth of field. I am looking forward to its appearance and reviews of it.
Yes, they still have to deliver a fast 33mm, because it was supposed to be the f1.0 that eventually became the € 1600 50mm. Thx for watching!

I will never understand when people say the human I see in 50 mm. When the angle of view of the 50 mm is 46 degree. Well the human eye sees in 94 degrees (24mm). With 2 human eyes we see in 120-180 degrees (5mm-0mm).
Okay, but I really can confirm the "natural" feeling in contrast to wider or longer focal length. I have it even more with a 40mm but a Fifty also does the job.

Hey Isaac. The 50mm f2 is also a very good lens, sharp and fast, so I can recommend it in general. But I sold it for the 56 f1.2 a couple of years ago. 50 is not my preferred focal length for street, but I love it for portraits and wanted the bigger aperture. As I tested the Viltrox 56 f1.4, I can also recommend that one. I hope I didn’t confuse you... Thx for watching.

I’m about to buy one of these lenses but the noise of the 1.2 will drive me batty. That’s something I hadn’t thought of and I don’t like that motor noise that comes from the lens
Wich 1.2 lens do you mean? The video is about the F2 or the F1.4....regarding noise it has to be the 1.4, correct?
If so, I can only agree to that. You now have the option to buy the absolute brilliant 33mm f1.4, wich is stellar regarding IQ and AF with its linear motor (wich is absolutely silent). BR!
@@Jayshooter_photo Yeah that’s probably the best option I did a video today with the kit lens and it was actually okay. The one advantage of the kit lens is that it gets you the ability to zoom into a subject if you need to and slowly zoom back out. And that works quite well for the for the kit lens anyway. So I’ll probably just end up with a 33 mm for portrait work which is the 1.4

you kept talking about how the f2 was sharper. i bet at f2 the 1.4 lens is sharper. lol. so isn't that comparison kind of irrelevant? :-) if so, the f2 lens doesn't offer any real improvement except size. the 1.4 gives you an extra stop. the f2 gives you smaller body...

Das 1.4 er natürlich ....das 2.0 ist natürlich keine schlechte Linse im Gegenteil , aber mir gefällt die Optik der Linse nicht es verjüngt sich nach vorne hin das gefällt mir nicht .....das 1.4 f mit der Gegenlichtblende gefällt mir besser...

1 stop makes huge light difference as you show. so 1.4 is better for that. Lovely comparsion video covering all points but seems distortion is not covered because this review must be using jpeg image or lightroom auto corrected files? because without lightroom it shows big distortion as I saw here: ua-cam.com/video/DkojGws6px8/v-deo.html

My experience is, that I don’t care about corrected distortion. Why should I? Maybe it tells something about the lenses quality in the manufacturing process, but that’s it. I shoot jpeg 85% of the time. Thx for watching!
@@Jayshooter_photo I think because I am canon user who want to enter fuji system after using friend's fuji system, I shoot more raw and it will change to jpeg after using fuji more. My prime lens has no distortion in raw images, but yes fuji is known for jpeg and so should not matter more
Even if I use the RAW files with Fujifilm, the correction is also done automatically in Capture One or Lightroom. In my opinion the whole thing is a little overrated, but maybe I think too simple here. Welcome to the Fuji-World and thx for watching!
@@Jayshooter_photo In Nikon I used to use raw file and also jpeg file (as shot raw + jpeg) and then superimposed both and results were great. I used friend Fuji and raw file was different in dimension from jpeg. Fuji jpeg are great. Now if I want to add more depth to same fuji profile jpeg with combination of raw, I was not able to do due to sight differences achieved by auto-distortion correction. So in that context it is not overrated as I experienced the issue. But still I love fuji experience and so will embrace it. Nothing is perfect
@@Jayshooter_photo i saw another user mentioning - Very high distortion in RAW files...too much, which software correction cannot fully deal with leading to smeared corners.
The f2 is better in almost every way except the speed, which is not much difference
A full f-stop is a lot, because it means that twice light reaches the sensor. And the f1.4 creates the nicer images in general. But don't get me wrong: The f2 is always my top recommendation.
@@Jayshooter_photo I dunno if I agree about “nicer images in general”. That’s just subjective. And I hardly ever shoot wide open, as I shoot street photography most of the time.
You probably don't own both lenses. The f2 is pretty clinical, as the 1.4 has flaws, character, and magic. They are two very different lenses. I will never sell my 1.4, but the f2 I could really care less about.

@@Jayshooter_photo just saying. Germany has crazy, paranoid photography laws where you need permission to display photographs of people. As opposed to countries that say if youre out in public you have not expectation of privacy and anyone can take a photo of you as long as its not used for commercial purposes
That is not the whole truth. There is a decision by the highest German court that freedom of art also applies to street photography, as long as you do not violate personal rights.
