Always nice to see something getting fixed instead of replaced. To play devil's advocate, I have worked in the autoparts field for many years. Mr. Gasket if I remember correctly had exhaust manifold gaskets of simular material and were packaged on a thin piece of cardboard with shrink wrap and always looked like garbage. I think that style of gasket is just really fragile and the way they are packaged plays a big part of them getting damaged. I hope you got miss handled gaskets and not used but we will never know.
My old Compressor 50 + years old finally gave up on me this last spring, tank starting leaking rotting out. Glad I had a back up! Thanks for sharing RK 👍🏻
Good video Roadking! It’s nice to have a variety of projects. I have a similar air compressor, same size but Cambell Hausfeld. Mine had a broken reed valve, fortunately I was in the garage at the time otherwise it would’ve been destroyed internally with a chunk of metal banging in the cylinder. For a set of reed valves and a gasket set it was $130! Can’t complain though, 31 years old and still getting the job done!
Nice job, Roady. I always chuckle when the pointy finger on a stick enters the shot. An impressive compressor. I have a big compressor and never fire it up. I have a small one I switch on with the lights over the lathe. It's good enough for what I use, blowing things off the lathe, airing up tyres etc. I haven't sprayed anything for years. If I do I will have to get the big Ingersol Rand fired up. All the best, Mart in England.
Road King I have the same air compressor as you only older by champion I hope your new head gaskets and other gaskets hold up hopefully they just marked it up on an engine I never ran those gaskets I hope you find an old air-cooled engine and rebuild it I like those videos I do like the truck one too thanks for the video
Nice work getting the compressor back into shape and pumping up a storm. I'm thinking of replacing my 30+ year 2 cylinder Campbell Hausfeld pump with a new one from HF . The one I'm looking at should work well with my existing motor.
Thanks Lloyd!! I had the same one, I worked the balls off it!! I think in 40 years I replaced 1 head gasket and a couple of reeds!! I gave it to a friend a few years back and he's still using it!!☻
I have a POS Chinese Tractor supply big junky compressor only used it a few hours and Reed valves broke . No parts available from mfg . So I took a pancake spatula from kitchen made of thin AMERICAN stainless steel and made my own fkg Reed valve . Now runs perfect. Excellent you saved old compressor. Nice work
In 1986 I bought an Ingersoll Rand 5HP 2-stage that was built in Tulsa. We used it 4 hours a day 5 days a week for 20 years bead blasting paint off of flanges before it needed new reeds and gaskets. The guy I sold it to is still running it. They made them good back then.
Nice repair there Buddy. Was given one of those Chinee Crapsman hot dog compressors with a similar problem. Made my own gasket, put it back into service. Ran great for 10 years and then the other side of the reed valve gasket blew. Made another one, still runs great. Best free compressor I ever got. HA😆
Thanks Chris!! I noticed it was taking alot longer to fill the tank while I was using the air tools when I was doing the Bodywork!! That Beast should be able to run a whole shop with a few guys working at the same time without any problem!!☻
Good video to see. I have one of those moderate size Craftsman's and the head is leaking oil. Pretty minor and I haven't tried to see f re-torquing will help. But it was good to see you repair. Thanks
As far as I know Saylor-Beall is still made in St John Mi. They were a very good compressor twenty plus years ago when I worked on them. Champion compressors were also very good back then.
Excellent job on that Big boy! I'm always shocked at prices today on everything, I feel like my Grandmother -I always remember her saying "How Much!?" whenever I told her how much I paid for something. Now I am the one saying "How Much?!" LOL
Looks like the one we had at a shop I worked at 20+ years ago. Sat in the back room that was their parts room I had to do 11 semi truck tires back to back dismount and mount. That compressor ran for a couple of hours at least. In the summer. it was hot as heck in that room when I got done
@@805ROADKING Thankfully I never had to deal with those widow maker split rings. Used the same two bar method I still use today Thankfully where I work now they come mounted and I rarely have to a dismount and mount
I'm almost sure those gaskets are new but probably made in a small workshop using rotary cutter machines and punches designed for more "traditional" gasket materials. All these tools leave very irregular edges on the graphite sheets, you can try to make a hole in an old graphite gasket using a punch that makes perfect holes in paper gaskets and the result will be very similar to what I see in those gaskets.
They should have sent you a new gasket to replace the damaged one. Also when torquing the bolts, pull in a steady motion, not a jerky one. Thanks for the video.
Intercooler pipe and outlet to tank are backwards at the end of your video. Basically your only using the one cylinder. It would be interesting to see the time difference to fill the tank when you get it switched back. It happens to everyone at some point in life.
If those are genuinely used gaskets, that's pretty filthy of them selling them to you at full price, but at least you turned that particular set of lemons into lemonade though...
You have a 1 stage compressor now. Your air lines are crossed over. I don't think the gaskets are used, it's the way the cutting die cuts them. Prolly got beat up a bit on storage shelf
I guess it's too late now, and the actual surface of the gaskets was good, but I would call the lady at the gasket company and ask why she gave you used gaskets.
It's made to repair not to throw away!! Thanks!

I hope you're right HOWs!! It's been two months an they are still holding up!!☻

Thanks for sharing RK 👍🏻
Can't complain about that eh!!☻
please do some short videos of the motors you and mike built. we love seeing them run. you got new viewers that need to see those works of art
We'll see what we can do, I like that idea!!☻

Son of a gun! You have some observant viewers! Parker73711 noticed right away the lines were reversed. Wow! Hats off to Parker!
Yeah Buddy!! I wish I posted this video sooner, I've been running that compressor like that for two months!!☻
Road King I have the same air compressor as you only older by champion I hope your new head gaskets and other gaskets hold up hopefully they just marked it up on an engine I never ran those gaskets I hope you find an old air-cooled engine and rebuild it I like those videos I do like the truck one too thanks for the video
Yeah we have a bunch of old engines Chuck, maybe we'll do one this winter!!☻

hf chinesium junk Keep old one.

I feel like those gaskets might just be shelf worn. Wouldn't they have paint on the edge if they were from an assembled machine?
Thank you for the video very interesting yeah I never seen a compressor get tore down like that so that's something to learn about
Thanks for watching Lil' Joe!! We appreciate it Bud!!☻

always something needs a bit of fine tuning, good work, keep safe
Yeah Buddy!!☻

Yeah Buddy!! All my tools from the 70's and 80's still work great today!! Can't say that for broken crap I bought from Harbor Freight last month!!☻
Looks like a great old compressor, all the best to you and your loved ones
Thanks Don!! It's treated me well!!☻
Nice repair there Buddy. Was given one of those Chinee Crapsman hot dog compressors with a similar problem. Made my own gasket, put it back into service. Interesting as always. What symptom(s) did you notice that tipped you off to a blown head gasket?
Thanks Chris!! I noticed it was taking alot longer to fill the tank while I was using the air tools when I was doing the Bodywork!! That Beast should be able to run a whole shop with a few guys working at the same time without any problem!!☻

You have a nice compressor there sir , we'll done getting it back up running again glad those gaskets worked since that one was bent some
Thanks alot TW!! It's been about 2 months now and they seem to be holding up!!☻
Now I can add compressor tech to my lengthening list of RoadKing certifications.
I cannot believe that someone would sell you some used parts I special to you Mr Road King 👑
Thanks Mel!! Stuff happens Bud!!☻
As far as I know Saylor-Beall is still made in St John Mi.
They were a very good compressor twenty plus years ago
when I worked on them.
Champion compressors were also very good back then.
Nice work. It never crossed my mind there was a head gasket and it was so similar to an engine….
Thanks Dog!!☻

Thanks Buddy!! We were always worried about sounding like our Parents now we gotta worry about sounding like our Grandparents eh!!☻
Nice fix RK,, man I miss my compressor. I think it was a 30 gallon and that thing ran forever. Had to give it up when I moved..
Thanks Carl!! I probably had the same 30 gal, beat it to death for 40 years and gave it to a friend that is still using it today!!☻
Looks like the one we had at a shop I worked at 20+ years ago. Sat in the back room that was their parts room I had to do 11 semi truck tires back to back dismount and mount. That compressor ran for a couple of hours at least. In the summer. it was hot as heck in that room when I got done
That had to suck!! I owned three Triaxle Dumps So I did my share of Split Rings but only one or two at a shot!!☻
@@805ROADKING Thankfully I never had to deal with those widow maker split rings. Used the same two bar method I still use today Thankfully where I work now they come mounted and I rarely have to a dismount and mount

Great fix R.K.! It sucks that they sold you used gaskets for new price.
Thanks Matt!! Stuff happens!!☻

HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!
Same to you and Rhonda Buddy!!☻
i noticed your lines are backwards to where you took em off??
I noticed it to you need to switch the two lines and it will probably build up air faster
Thanks to both you Guys for the info and observation!! We'll definitely take care of that!!☻
I have the same year '99 RoadKing!
That's 2001 with 7K miles on it, bought it new!!☻
Intercooler pipe and outlet to tank are backwards at the end of your video. Basically your only using the one cylinder. It would be interesting to see the time difference to fill the tank when you get it switched back. It happens to everyone at some point in life.
Thanks alot for the info and observation Eric!! We'll definitely take care of that!!☻
That compressor reminds me of a speed air
You're right, they are the same!!☻
Sir we don’t need to use gasket gel etc ??
If my air compressor ever goes out I'm done working. I use compressed air everyday, no lie.
I'm with ya Bud!! I'd be lost without it!!☻
If those are genuinely used gaskets, that's pretty filthy of them selling them to you at full price, but at least you turned that particular set of lemons into lemonade though...

Quincy now makes several compressors in China, I have one and it sucks.
It's a bummer those expensive gaskets were "lightly used".
Yeah Buddy!! At least they seem to be working, it been about two months since I replaced them!!☻
I think $90 after 50 years or more of service is barely acceptable. 🤣
Certainly cheaper than buying a new one.
I guess it's too late now, and the actual surface of the gaskets was good, but I would call the lady at the gasket company and ask why she gave you used gaskets.
They seem to be working fine Tim, we'll just have to be a little more Astute next time!!☻
Merry Christmas Roadking family!
Thanks Bud!! Same to you and your family!!☻
