A Modern-Day Poll Tax

  • In their latest attempt to fight mythical “non-citizen voting” - which is already illegal - House Republicans passed the so-called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (“SAVE”) Act (H.R. 8281) to require voters to meet burdensome proof-of-citizenship requirements in order to vote.
I spoke and voted against this modern day poll tax, but the bill passed largely along party lines on a vote of 221 to 198.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.
ICYMI we're in the selfishness/apathy stage right now.

And this has what to do with the Congresswoman's statement? Was it her statement about paying for the demands of the sponsors of the bill as being the equivalent of a poll tax and believing that the voters should not have that burden? And second, why did you not give citation to your diatribe? The origins of the quote as well as the purpose of the quote are very murky yet purposeful.

@@preachermikeIn various states, they have made many forms of identification invalid. Any time you have spend money to get the acceptable identification, which is happening in certain states, it is a poll tax. Worse, many states have made getting these forms of ID difficult, reducing places where they are available and making the hours extremely difficult to make if you are a working person who can’t afford to take a day off in order to get it.
We have had a system that works for a very long time. There has never been shown any voter fraud big enough to affect any election. It wasn’t a problem till a certain political party decided it was a good way to get rid of poorer voters. That and the flood of voter purges from the registration rolls. THAT is pretty darn burdensome, too.

@charleskramer7062 Come off it! Getting a passport is not that expensive. They are good for years. The same is true of an ID or driver's license.
Purging voter registrations is required by law. People move or die, so they must be updated. Especially when you are mass mailing out paper ballots.

Why would anyone not want more people to vote and be involved in our form of government and do everyting possible to make it easier and safer to vote? I wonder why anyone would want to make it more difficult to vote? Acutally, I don't wonder.
