    Here’s the real time carving tutorial you guys requested! Don’t worry I move my thumb and change the angle before the most important parts 🤦‍♀️still trying to get the hang of this filming myself working thing. I’ll try to do better on the lighting and angle for the next one 🤷‍♀️ Thanks for watching!

    Eileen, this second video was just awesome! Thank you for the close-up views and explanations of your tools and the carvings into the clay....! Now it makes sense! Looking forward to future demonstrations with your lighting and camera angle adjustments.

    I love this! I was wondering at what stage do you carve the clay? Is it 3 hours after finishing your piece on the wheel? How do you know when it’s dry enough that it won’t crumble in your hand but wet enough so that it’s easy for you to sculpt?

      I try to have it a little drier than leather hard. I usually trim the pieces the next day, so about 24 hours, but that also depends on the humidity in your studio. After I trim it in the wheel I’ll spray the top again and either put it in a damp box or cover it until I’m ready to carve it. Letting it rest like that evens out the water content in the piece since the rim dries before the base. If the pieces you carve don’t come off cleanly and smudge or get stuck when you brush them off, it’s still too wet. Happy carving!

    Eileene thank you for this demo, it filled some gaps for me... question... what is the optimal dryness level for carving?

    • @manateepottery
      @manateepottery  3 роки тому +1

      I usually aim for a little drier than leather hard. Sometimes the piece dries out too much from the warmth of my hand as I’m carving and I’ll give it a spitz of water and let it rest covered or in a damp box until it’s good to carve again. 👍

    Lovely! Where do you attach your handle?

      kellydiver I find a spot where it lays pretty even where the outer edges of the top attachment point of the handle hit. You can always carve down any high points between. Hope that makes sense!

    If you put the camers over you shoulder when you are sitting up we will see what you see but at a better angle than this side view we are seeing now. The same goes for when your on your wheel, because if we see you on the wheel head on, its the opposite way we should be doing it xx

      Thanks for the feedback! I have been struggling with the angle. I just record these on my phone so usually just prop it up on something, but I think I can go over the shoulder with a tripod. I’ll just have to remember to keep my head out of the shot!
