    This was super helpful to watch as someone who's looking to delve deeper into sgraffito work. We have similar taste in tools and imagery when carving. This video is exactly what I needed to watch before ordering myself a birthday present!

    You did a great job on that sloth, very cute! I feel your pain with the recording. I forget to keep my hands in frame as well. I guess I get so wrapped up in what I'm doing that I just don't think about it. Thanks for this informative video!

      Did you carve through the mug? And then you fix with a spray of water and let dry slowly? I’m always so scared to carve through my items and therefore they are heavy/ think walled.

    Watching the video at 0.5x of normal speed is perfect for being able to watch this carving of a mug. Tap on the stack of three dots that reside in the upper right corner of the video. Lots of options hiding there.

    Hello, The majority of my projects is slab work. I was hoping you could recommend a tool/technique for carving very thin lines that are close together. The problem I have when carving into wet clay is the minute pieces of clay that remain in the lines as well as the buildup of clay that’s pushed to the surface on both sides of each line. So I get the line free of debris and it then creates another problem with smoothing the surface. So, in essence, I fix one problem but it creates another and another. Is there a tool or technique to avoid this never ending and most frustrating problem? What I would really love is for you to create a video showing how you address this problem. Although I’ve never heard anyone else complain about this, I can’t be the only one. Or at least I’d like to think so. Thank you.

    At what stage is the clay when you carve it?

    • @manateepottery
      @manateepottery 3 роки тому

      It’s a little stiffer than leather hard. With larger or thinner pieces, I’ll give them a spray part way through and cover them for a bit to even out the moisture if it dries too quickly.

    If you put the camers over you shoulder when you are sitting up we will see what you see but at a better angle than this side view we are seeing now. The same goes for when your on your wheel, because if we see you on the wheel head on, its the opposite way we should be doing it xx

    • @manateepottery
      @manateepottery 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the feedback! I have been struggling with the angle. I just record these on my phone so usually just prop it up on something, but I think I can go over the shoulder with a tripod. I’ll just have to remember to keep my head out of the shot!

    I'm fascinated by these carvings... Forgive me for being an absolute newb: do these carved pieces get baked in some sort of oven? Obviously I have no clue about this art form...I create in sand, very large scale...and I really really want to learn how to do, what you do.

    Very helpful info. Thanks. How do you polish the foot on your plate so they don't scratch your table?

    • @manateepottery
      @manateepottery 3 роки тому

      After the glaze firing I polish the bottoms with diamond polishing pads and that keeps them from scratching up the table. You just use progressively finer grit until you get a nice shiny finish on the foot ring. 👍
