I read a much different version of this story, which Don Grady's co-star Stan Livingston, who played Chip Douglas, told. He had the same setup about tossing film cans onto the set while Viv was on set, but he said it was only during rehearsal. THE LUCY SHOW was filmed in front of an audience during evenings when a live audience could be there, so it wouldn't have happened while the MY THREE SONS cast was filming. MY THREE SONS was like most shows at the time filmed 1-camera during the daytime. I think it would've been excessively unprofessional for Frawley to ruin a filmed take that would've cost his old employer, Lucy, money.
Yes he said that during an interview. I remember when the interviewer asked him he was kinda hesitant.

yes, I've heard Stan's version too! I believe he said that Frawley had him toss the cannister after saying something like "let's teach that dame a lesson!" or something like that!
It's sad to hear the backstories of Vivian Vance and William Frawley. She was no better.
I think Rick is portraying that kid too much as an innocent bystander in this. lol That kid was old enough to be like "What,Why Am Doing This?" I've always thought the "hate" they had for each other was overblown. But that said,I can see Vivian Vance being sick of down times with William Frawley. I could also see it having nothing to do with him,she just for whatever reason didn't want to play Ethel anymore.
Vivian also resented being portrayed as a frumpy housewife. She had been a glamour girl in her younger days and wasn't happy to be associated with a much older man as her husband.
It wasn't the fact Frawley was older but the fact he looked it: let's face it: short, fat & bald! I have known women married to much older men & didn't look their age.
I LOVE that episode when Ricky was giving Lucy a fur/mink coat. and Ethel wanted one...Fred told Ethel, if the good lord wanted her to have a fur coat. she would have been born with one. LOL LOL
all true - but more complex and nuanced really. For example, I know (and I do mean I know) that Vivian Vance didn't want to continue with episodic TV, period. Sure partnering with William Frawley is something she may have disdained. We'll never know it all. However, Vivian thought she was being typecast as Ethel and yearned to go back to the stage, and maybe with her increased visibility do movies. Lucy only convinced her to come back because it was Lucy, and for $$$.
I am a Bill Frawley fan and while I believe it takes two to tango rehearsal or not, when you know an individual has issues with you perhaps it is best to keep your distance and keep the peace. God Bless and God Keep 🙏
I would have lmao if this had happened. It sounded pretty funny. Truth be known, there were probably a lot of pranks between the two that remain unknown to this day. Shame they carried this feud for so long. Reconciliation is a powerful thing and would have been so freeing for both actors.
I always wondered though, if the feud between Frawley and Vance did help bring dimension to their characters during the run of Lucy. Strengthen that tension that was very present in the relationship of the Mertzes. 🤔

In my experience, a person who truly hates another person wouldn't bother to prank them as they never entered their thoughts; I say, well done dear Bill and Don! Great New Year tid bit Rick.
Lucie Arnaz herself said that the whole Frawley/Vance feud was vastly overblown. Seeing as how she was there I'll take her word for it.
That said, I can not imagine him delibrately ruining a live filming. Neither Lucy nor Desi would have tolerated it. A childish annoying prank during a rehearsal? Yes. Just to be aggravating.
One wonders if Vivian ever did anything to retaliate. I thought she was great on the Lucy Show and when she left it just wasn't as good. Lucy needed Viv to bounce off of. It didn't work with anyone else
I've wondered myself just how exaggerated the Bill Frawley-Vivian Vance feud had become over the years.
I read a slightly different version of this story, in that one they threw a box of film canisters and Frawley said to throw it when he signaled and "run like hell". But in that story it was only a rehearsal, not a filming. That would make more sense to me, they were all professionals at heart and no real harm wou;ld be done
Werewolfantepaladin....I have read of the animosity between Vivian and Bill . He was an alcoholic and like many alcoholics he was a very man . He was very vulgar to Vivian making sparky comments behind her back . Of course Lucy , who was a control freak would try to blow it off as nothing . That would make her look incompetent otherwise since she was had major control of the show in how things were run .Collaborating with a young teenage boy on a school boy prank and then running like a little girl ....at his age , about 60 ...pffft. And some people on this thread thought that was funny ? Vivian Vance was Hollywood Royalty . Bill Frawley , by the way , dropped dead on a New York city street corner of a heart attack .

Desi was not on the picture. He was not a part of the Lucy show crew or cast except he was briefly an executive producer but left shortly afterwards

A little douchy, if I was writing a draft at work (relating this to my job) and some guy I didn't like did a prank requiring me to start over ...well, wouldn't be good for anybody after the dust settled. But on the other hand, if tim Conway did this to Harvey korman in rehearsal in the carol Burnett show, that would be funny because of their relationship. I guess context is everything.
When Frawley died, Vance ordered champagne for everyone in the restaurant she was at.
She said a light has gone out in the world that day and she wanted to celebrate him
To celebrate his life not that he crossed over.
Don't take it out on Bill. It was Vivian and her ego that started the whole thing. She made it clear that she thought she deserved a better choice for a husband. Imagine Bill having to work with her knowing that!
I had heard he sent the boys to heckle her. I can imagine Lucy would go crazy since she ran a tight ship. Dick Martin once let Jimmy Garrett (who played Lucy's son) have some of his beer and Lucy screamed "Dick Martin in my office now!" I didn't know there was a sliding wall between the two shows.
I think Lucille Ball would have been upset as well even if it was only in rehearsal.

I always heard Vivian Vance and William Frawley hated each other. I suspect Vivian probably got tired of smelling the alcohol.
When he would complain, Viv would say, "Bill thinks being on the number one TV show takes time away from sitting in bars".

I have never heard that story, sounds like Bill had a fun sense of humor, even if it was a tad mean spirited towards Vivian. But, I could never understand her animosity towards him even after their characters became one of the most beloved and iconic couples in television history. For all her personal feelings and issues with her character and her disdain for him, they will forever be remembered for generations to come. Oh, and I always loved Don Grady too. He was a cutie. I'm on Viv's side. She said she tried to befriend Bill but he simply wouldn't forgive her for that "only a vaudeville actor" insult. His behavior upset her so much she visited her therapist before and after they had a scene together! But I'm sure underneath it all they had a fondness for each other

I’m sure Frawley only did that because Vivian called his mother a weasel! 🤣
Probably chalked it up to kids messing around, I doubt Vance ever suspected Frawley unless she saw him running and closing the door and Ball most likely addressed the situation with the producer of my Three Sons. It was a very dangerous act Frawley is lucky that nobody was seriously hurt.

No. I had no idea what Ethel and Fred's relationship was like off camera. Although at certain times, you get a hint of Ethel's true personality. Maybe that is why they did not get along. I don't know. I remember this came out between Lucy and Ethel on a Lucy show Christmas show. A dispute about Christmas traditions was developing. It looked real to me. Then when she was on the movie, "The Great Race." She became a totally domineering lady in that movie. Now, maybe Fred in all fairness was the same way. Weird and funny. Thanks, Rick! Take care.
Tina Cole said Bill Frawley was a bit of a misogynist and was rude to women in general.
Meredith MacRae (1944-2000) played "Sally" (the love interest of "Mike," the eldest son) on "My Three Sons" (1963-1965) and only had great things to say about William Frawley, later in her life. When she was to be married in 1964 (in real life) she later fondly recalled Bill Frawley gifting her with $200.00 as a wedding present (a goodly sum back then).
They might not have cared for each other, but Im sure they were civil to each other. Of course, the "little boy" is going to come out in any older man when he's around younger ones .......and playing pranks is usually one of the choices made.
If she didn't at least give Frawley a big middle-finger salute, she missed the boat. Lots of times actors can't yell at each other back stage, or off set, but they can make their sentiments known with facial expressions and gestures. The stage manager will have no idea, unless they have line-of-sight of the shenanigans.

That's a great story of Bill Frawley convincing Don Grady to throw the film can onto the "The Lucy Show" set, and then Grady actually throwing it! That's hilarious! I would have liked to see that, too. I love your videos!

It sounds kind of like a love hate relationship. That film-can frisbee sounds playful to me not mean spirited but who knows, William was known to be a curmudgeon lol. I love them both so much 💜
How is this funny at all? Has anyone every seen or felt a film can? Those things can easily hurt someone and I'm pretty sure that back then they were even harder and heavier.

I remember that Frawley was in one episode of The Lucy Show (I think it was one of his final performances). Just a cameo, for some reason I think he was at a horse stable or something. They both give each other a double-take, and Lucy said he reminded her of someone. Vivian was in that episode but written out of that scene as she still didn't want to work with him
It was a different actress working with Lucy. Vivian was not at all in The Lucy Show at that time as she left to spend more time with her husband.

yes, I've heard of it. but I was never impressed with what the MTS cast did. Actually made me sad the first time I read about it, because I've always enjoyed Bill Frawley's work! I was so disappointed to learn that Mr. Frawley wasn't always professional.
Great story. Was it nice to prank Vivian? No, but it wasn't over the line. so hopefully Vivian's response (or inclination) wasn't an over-reaction. I would think a curse word or a get back prank, but nothing more.
LOL My guess is William Frawley was drunk and somehow coerced Don Grady into pulling that prank! If Desi Arnaz had still been in charge, I'm sure W. F. would have been immediately fired!
Frawley was never ever drunk while he was acting or rehearsing. He was the upmost professional in that regard
