Hi everyone! Let me know if you have any questions about the mask modifier in the comments below! :)

Thank you for a great tutorial!
Im having an issue with this modifier. I'm trying to make the cornea of the eye transparent by assigning a vertex group to that area of the eye. I first assigned a vertex group to that area of the mesh in edit mode and then went to object mode and chose the mask modifier and selected that vertex group. First, the only thing shown is the assigned vertices when the threshold is zero and nothing is to be seen when the threshold is 1. When I invert it, the whole eye is shown (sclera and cornea is in one mesh), and nothing changes when sliding the threshold.
I applied all transformations beforehand and I dont see what im doing wrong. Do you have any solution to my problem ?

Perfect, just what I need for my current project (a building with some details inside). Now I can pull back the roof and show the details. As beginner I really appreciate such videos, so thank you for making them.

Here is a strange but true situation. Tonight I'm making an animation where I need to do a break out view and I was going to try and animate the material transparency.. Opened blender, saw that you had a new video, decided to watch it before I start my animation and hey, this tutorial was just perfect! Thanks! keep up the great vids.

OMG! The method I've been using is to export an animation from After Effects (an animated mask) and then setting it all up to mask using shaders. This method looks sooooo much easier!
That's what you get for skimping on watching CG Essentials vids folks! Pain and frustration!
Oh wait, he only uploaded this yesterday... I can blame him then.

This would come in handy for animating a light saber turning on/off.

How would you do a doorway to another scene (like the doors in Monsters, inc.). I had assumed you would use a mask modifier.

I’m a bit of a newbie with blender. I was wondering if there was a way to use a mask to determine which bits of a model another modifier is applied to. Like a mask in Photoshop.

is there a way to fill the face as it's masked away? so it looks like a solid object vanishing? does that make sense?

Assume I have a walking character. Instead of using 3d background, I just using a picture background like classroom contain chairs or table. So how I hide some leg or body of the characters? when we imagine he walks behind the table. Sorry for my bad English

They should already start adding geometry nodes modifiers that replicate all these barebones modifiers plus adfing others useful for modeling etc.

I am trying to play a video in blender but I need it to play inside the confines of a PIANO KEY... I know it has to do with masking, but in this case it's not done with vertices?? Anyone have experience with this? I can do it in photoshop, but I need to do it in blender! thanks for any help!

Then I will render that project with transparent background, so I 'll have a part walking character video...then join character and image with VIDEO EDITORS for better quality

I've tried this over a dozen time. And every time I do it, the rest of the model becomes masked. I just want the legs, but when I slide the dial, the top part of the body vanishes. I know I'm missing something. But I've followed the instructions precisely each time. Anyone know if it's me or a bug in my blender?

It doesn't work. I tried it on person model and the area I wanted to keep, which was the head, disappeared too. No good

  • @halfblue2678

Kinda disappointed that you didn't really explained the mechanics of the threshold. Fortunately, I figured it out. Basically, if a vertex has a weight that is less than or equal to the threshold value, it would be hidden, that's why the threshold seems to toggle the model only if it's value is 1.

Seems like everything I learn isn't really valid in updated versions of blender, I'm not finding quite a bit of features in the same locations I see in almost every video based on different builds of Blender

    • @gigabytegallery7305

Not sure if the devs remove certain features on each build update, but I just can't find what I see on this video in my latest version of blender.
