- OVER THE TOP EP1 - Flying a single engine small plane across Australia in a day. From Melbourne to the top of the Northern Territory, watch the flights, see inside the cockpit, hear my radio calls and watch how I navigate over 1,500 miles across this continent.
Aircraft is a Cirrus SR22 VH-EYZ flying from Moorabbin Airport to Leigh Creek, Tenant Creek, Katherine (Tindal) Airport and finally into Darwin.

I honestly can't believe Stef doesn't have more subscribers with the production quality of his videos. Seeing EYZ go on long journeys like this is so cool to see!
Thank you, I love the community we have on here already, that's plenty for me!
@@StefanDrury I know you probably haven't been told this and it may seem a bit weird but I did a school project on your channel, as we were assigned to choose a "celebrity" that produces or acts in films/videos. You were just such a good example of an amazing creator
Me, too. I really have to wonder about UA-cam.
@@StefanDrury Thanks, Stef. But you deserve more.
Perf
I love these types of videos where you do a long flight and break it down in sections landing in small airports. Keep it up!!😍😍
Nice channel Stefan. Heading home from Singapore to Melbourne tomorrow!
Legendary
Greetings from Perth, WA. What a lovely video of your journey. Thanks for sharing!
You are definitely taking one of the best aircraft for this type of flying… I love the Cirrus ❤ I’m moving over your side soon, you should come for an aerobatic flip for a “different “ perspective 😏
Ah, did you get to see the secret drone project happening at Tindal Air Force Base when you flew in?? Must be why they are extending the runway there too - lots of clandestine activity happening there apparently (my brother in law used to work on the base).
As a Brit this makes me realise how big Australia is. What a great trip.
yeah we're bigger than the continental usa
I follow all posts and often have great pleasure to watch them but this episode was particularly pleasant, even more for the French pilot I am, discovering your beautiful landscapes, your ADs, the phraseology, the simple and welcoming relationship between airmen in Australia. Just love it. Thanks a lot for the work you do and I guess the big amount of time it requires. We are grateful to you for this pleasure moment in our days :-)
Merci David, I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
@David DANINO do you have any French pilots who make similar videos? Would be keen to see some French landscapes and piloting!
@@VictorsVector There are videos by "Flugabenteuer" who is an Austrian aviator. He did a lenghy multi episode France trip with a DA40. The video is in English though.
@@Juhujalp Thanks for that! Sounds good! Will check it out.
@@VictorsVector Hi, I'm in France and have a (modest) channel which I use to show my flights in my Jodel Mascaret, seaplanes and other aircraft I can get my hands on... Best wishes from The Flying Frog!
bruh.. i can understand why even in aus aviation u would use feet but GALLONS? or are most of ur viewers American? or does aviation community use imperial as standard?
I love all your videos, Stef, but this one just hit different. The storytelling and editing are unmatched. These videos make me feel like I’m with you, along for the adventure. As a maker of underwhelming UA-cam videos myself I hope to be able to craft a story half as well as you do. Cheers and safe travels.
Over 10 and a half hours single pilot, well done mate. I generally get extra crew on long flights 😊 Wow, your videos are getting better and better. I watch everything, on both channels, but don’t always comment (sorry). I truly think you should have a million subscribers based on the quality of your videos. You tell a great story and your editing is great. I’ve been flying for 40 years and listen to everything you say and often learn something new. Keep it up mate. I wasn’t expecting an overseas trip so soon so I’m looking forward to the next episode. 🎉
That’s great feedback Andrew, thanks for taking the time to say that. It’s comments like this that keep me motivated so thank you again.
Absolutely great video, Stef! As an Aussie who has done almost all of his flying in the US, I love to see the GA views of Australia. Funny that ATC picked up that you were doing a video😊
I saw this on FlightRadar the other day. Was browsing FlightRadar and saw your flight from Broken Hill to home base. Followed a bit and listened on LiveATC. Great work Stef.
I'm usually out of the country before I reach 500 ft. coming off the end of the runway at the local airport.
Awesome. Looking forward to more of this series. Did my own water crossing the other week across the bass strait four times.
Nice one, I love flying to Tassie. Thanks Glenn.
Awesome video Stef. I love how I used to watch these trip videos and get excited for what was to come in the future. Now I can watch them and understand every little technical detail you talk about. Absolutely love trips like this where it’s just you and the plane (and some music 😅) for hours on end with gorgeous scenery. How lucky are we…
it's too risky: a single person in an airplane on a 12h flight
@@ireneuszpyc6684 All of life involves risk… Stef goes on adventures and chooses to take calculated risks, mitigating it wherever possible with safety gear, and careful planning, prodicing wonderful videos of the process and of his travels.
Very cool Stef, I did a C206 ferry Perth to Cairns 30 years ago, no GPS, no autopilot. I still reflect on this as one of my greatest adventures. Airline flying now, still love flying and love my job. You have just inspired me to get back in a lightie.
@Stefan Drury I’m a new sub. How many flight hours have u logged now. Thanks from England 🏴
Just saw Niko's Caribbean tour which included a right bloke named Stefan. What's crazy is that I was looking for another flight video, and came across one that was titled, "I flew solo across Australia in a day." Curious, I tapped the video thumbnail, and was quite surprised that it featured that cool Aussie bloke from Niko's Caribbean tour. Stefan, I subscribed and liked. You *rock*, maaan!
Ha, thanks UA-cam for putting the two videos together. Welcome to the channel Nathan, thanks for subscribing.
Hey Stefan, just wondered if you ever use HF frequencies outside VHF range? It sounds like it's almost obsolete now but I just love the idea of trying it in some remote part of the country.
Just a request why don't you do your home sydeny Darwin Perth home. In a day. What I mean is doing the perimeter of Australia.
Milkshake's back!!!!!!!! And 14:35 = just walk away right now......can't wait for the rest of the series!
Thanks Becster 🐮
One thing I’ve always wondered is so you cruise on 70% or keep it on 100% because I feel like the engine could overheat
Might want to check that fuel calc.. 22-11=9? Haha only 2 gal away but still
Great trip. I recall driving to Leigh Creek once back a few decades and it was a hell of a trip. It's weird seeing it as simply the first stop on your massive journey. Hope to watch a lot more of these videos from you.
As someone learning how be a pilot your videos are just plain entertaining to watch
You could say the videos are ‘plane’ entertaining…. I’ll show myself out
Brilliant! Makes my 7 hour drive from Gold Coast to Newcastle last weekend seem a bit of a doddle !
Brilliant video Stef. EYZ gets up and boogies. I ferry a rebuilt 206 from Parafield to Darwin in the 90s. I flew Tennant to Darwin direct last leg. Agree was too long. But overnighted in Alice so total flight was 13.8 hours. Will be following you.
You should come to New Zealand, I recommend Ardmore. That’s where I do flight training
I saw you on Sunday at YMMB. You're youtube channel the reason is started my flying.
Great video Stef! Your channel really kept me going during my PPL, now I'm also an aircraft owner and just recently did my first round trip internationally from Finland -> Germany and back! It was an awesome experience, and I'm pleased to say that I survived the direct 6hr leg on the way back surprisingly well. Next I'm planning to get started on my IR
How long have you been living in Australia? I'm originally from Adelaide and even used to live in Leigh Creek so your vids sometimes make me feel a bit homesick!
That’s awesome! Congratulations on your license and your aircraft purchase. This is not a trivial achievement.
Excellent content mate, look forward to the next episode!
It was so cool to see EYZ outside Australian airspace. You make the most amazing videos and thank you so much for sharing them with us!
You really have inspired me to get my PPL after by PhD
Thanks for making great videos! Keep them coming 🙂
I have been looking forward to this report.
Love all your tips and tricks from your content mate! Your videos in the cirrus especially is helpful as I am doing my MEIR currently but half the syllabus is cirrus SR20/22 time. You’re an absolute legend and inspiration for us down under here mate! Hopefully I get to see you in the skies up here in QLD soon! Love the chance to catch up🫡
Thank You so much for this fantastic video.
Are hanger fees manageable?
is " watch" similar to your "flight following?"
Sarwatch is the time that Search and rescue will start looking for you.
Great video! Can’t wait for part two! Congrats!❤
Glued to near 20 mins of a chap just doing what he loves. Spoiler alert, the fuel tank change is epic 😂 jokes aside, love your channel man, makes me want to learn how to fly.
Love your videos Stephan! Looking to come down and explore your wonderful country by air in our own (rented) aircraft. We've done self fly vacations in other parts of the world but can't seem to find any operators or resources to put one together in Australia. Do you have any contacts or recommendations for your country?
Just out of my curiosity, is there time for toilet break in between?
I see, there are toilet at pit stops, but if someone have stomachache, what shall we do?
So nice to have a 'UA-camr' not spend the entire video yelling at me to subscribe to the channel or promoting products. Wonderful video mate. Well done. Brilliant.
I see portuguese language on arrival. There's only one place you can go to see that. No I won't spoil the surprise. Or did I already?
Pretty outrageous Stefan, 1500 miles and still in the same country……..
I know, Australia is MASSIVE right?
@@StefanDrury LOL yup, it defies belief for us in the U.K. I can fly 30 miles and be in France…..
Thought my flight last week from Ireland to the UK was a big step in my flying journey, wow, this is something else!
It is a big step - don't undersell your acheivement. Stefan wanted to fly to another country and had to fly 1500 miles to do so. You are lucky to live in the UK with so many countries close at hand.
@@tlangdon12 Thanks, think you may have included Ireland as a part of the UK 😂
@@lukemccormack5405 No, Ireland was one of the countries adjacent to the UK that I was referring to. :-)
@@tlangdon12 Phew 😅, crisis averted!
Flown over here before?
@@lukemccormack5405 I live in the UK and have flown quite a bit in the UK. Total time was around 280hrs when I stopped flying. Missing it more and more at the moment, but don’t have the money to remain current. :-(
Absolutely wonderful video, I love Australia with all my soul. Cheers from Brazil, mate 🌏
Great video stef, you deserve alot more for this
Thank you Tom
This is amazing and it’s only just started. 😍 I’ve flown my Beechcraft across the Canada-U.S.A. border. It’s always an interesting experience.
My plane’s comedy fuel gauges mean a dipstick and fuel log are crucial...
Getting tired after a long leg would be another reason to break up a long trip into different parts. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next episode!
Absolutely amazing video stef! Your videos get better every day!
Thank you, that means a lot.
Anytime!
Brillliant😮
YOU FLEW OVER MY HOME WITHOUT MY PERMISSION??????
its a joke btw, and it was my old home to its someone elses now. now im in QLD
You had definitely inspired me Stefan getting my PPL and flying around Australia.
Godspeed on your journey!!
I remember how excited I was when I set off on my road trip around America. Looks like you are living the dream. Can't wait to see where you go next.
Fantastic video Stefan, never flown MEL/DRW before so was interesting to see the Murray as well as the Creeks (Leigh and Tennant) - places us mere pax are unlikely to fly into. Waiting for Ep 2 now :D
Never been to Australia... Live in Austin, Texas! maybe someday... really enjoyed watching the flights!!
Very cool
Having recently done a road trip Syd to Alice (and back), out via Mildura, back via Broken Hill, seeing the landscape from above was just beautiful! Can't beat those outback colours!
Great trip. I know what you mean about feeling fine after a long day. I flew the Glasair from Canberra to Perth in a day, feeling fine all the way over. The next day I was a bit shattered though 😀
Great scenery and photography, wish I was there safe trip.
All the best Richard 🇬🇧
Awesome video Stef shame so much of the East Coast is now in flood conditions. One minute you are filming in fires and now floods. But for the first time in so long no part of Oz is in drought. Thanks for sharing these amazing adventures with us
Wonderful adventure, Stefan!
You gave us a view of your refueling along the way. Wondering about oil burn: how often and how much oil did you add during the flight? Looking forward to the next episode!
Yeah good question, only one bottle of oil to top up on the way up. I did that in Katherine on the morning of the flight to Darwin. Then only one more on the way back. From an oil consumption point of view EYZ is running very efficiently at the moment.
@@StefanDrury Thanks for the info, Stefan! And good to hear EYZ is running so well!
Thanks so much for this video Stef. Just amazing all round, really enjoyed it!
What price was avgas at places like Tennant Creek and Tindal? Frightens me even to think about it! This reminded me very much of my longest-ever day of flying, way back in 1992 - 7.8 hours Perth to Broome in our lovely old Beech Debonair. No autopilot, and only a primitive (borrowed) Sony portable GPS - all it displayed was latitude and longitude in numbers! But what a fantastic experience, would do it again in a heartbeat if I could.
With any views over beautiful Australia I'll never understand why your government is ssssoooo strict on immigration with all that amazing land mass you guys have ??!!
Share it out a bit more 🤠
Very nice aircraft Sir.
Jealous not !!!!!!
I just fly Eurofox tow planes and gliders 👍👍
Nice work. Have flown a BE35 to Kununurra, my longest hop
👏👏👏, I couldn't wish this on anyone, so long and boring, I mean a A320 from Sydney to Perth is just under 5. But dang you choose a cracking day to do it, it's crazy lovely.
Flew to Timor? Are you going anywhere near Dilly and Balibo? They say there's a good dentist. Used to practice in Rozelle.
🇭🇲🌏
PNG is only 90 miles from Cape York, you'd be able to see a foreign country without even leaving Australia or going on oxygen... but I expect you had good reasons for your actual destination.
damn, I honestly thought i was watching a series on tv. The production on this video is very well put together. First video and im loving it!
Thank you, glad you liked the video and welcome to the channel.
@@StefanDrury what a warm welcome!
how long have you lived in australia for? you sound 50% british 50% aussie
Try a real challenge, take something more like a Tiger Moth with just a spirit compass and stopwatch. No GPS, no autopilot and no problem staying awake 🙂
A lot of pilots need to actually cancel their SARTIMEs, because I believe we've had a few incidents where pilots have failed to cancel them, creating a bit of controversy.
Stef, thanks so much for all the fun you are providing us with. Haven't found an answer to my serious question I bring it up here: The Cirrus SR22 hasn't got a toilet on board. What if you need to spend a penny urgently? When you flew over to East Timor you and Michael had quite a snack or even more than one - if I had this, I would need to make sure a toilet is within reach.
Stef since you have fuel totalizer have you given thought into changing on fuel used instead of time? I switch after 10 gallons, gives you 6 swaps on my plane with 7 left in each tank which is minimums for me... 14 gallons, little over 1.25 hours of flight time, at that point I better be near the airport or I find one as things get more complicated..
Great vid Stef! Looking forward to watching the rest of the adventure. This is every aviators dream! Stay safe, James
Steff. How can 6000 give you better tas then at 10000, if we disregard the winds? (looking at the clouds it didn't look very windy).
Hey great YT. Such a cool adventure to enjoy I think. Just a question, what was the typical price of the avgas at the more remote locations you landed in? Are the avgas bowsers auto where you pay with card upfront?
Leigh Creek represent! Next time you fly by stay with us at the Leigh Creek Outback Resort, give us a call and we can pick you up from the airport 😊
How did you pay those self-service fuel? There was no single airport employee around :)
Great video. Just a question, could you follow the railway line that the Guam uses. Thanks 🇬🇧
I wish I owned home in Melbourne. I live in Kentucky, the leaves fall of the trees last week of October, and the clocks are set back an hour November, and it gets dark after that before 6pm. I wish I had a home in Melbourne cause I Would live there November to April, and never experience short daylight days nor winter.
That's nothing - I drove from Port Hedland to Albany in 18hrs!!
When you fuel up like that do you attach a ground before fueling .. understand I don't know at all if required but having pumped fuel for all my years know about static
Put the microphone another inch from your face and the PPPPPPP annoying pilot sounds won’t happen. But I know pilots love that that sound bcse they think it makes them sound more professional and legitimate and important. Just like the weather guy in the news helicopter. It crazy! I’ve heard a professional set up and we don’t need to hear your breath everytime you speak
Good one Stef. Doing the adventures we'd all like to do. Keep it coming!
Very nice quality and inspiring(says a student pilot from yred). Thanks for sharing. Please share more of Australia and how it is to maintain and own a plane.
are u ready to fly a jet. I might pay your training while you learn. You make vids and you fly me around for fun!!! We go overseas i cover ur stay's. U just have fun been a tuber while helping me out
Hey Stefan, what sort of pilot license would you need for recreational flight like this one? would an PPL work for domestic and international flights or you need a CPL?
Honestly you should become a pilot instead of a youtuber but I'm surprised you crossed Australia.
Ay ay, NEW CALEDONIA, Norfolk Island, Vanuatu?..
What did you think of ATC in Darwin? I used to be one there so I hope they were decent (despite the guy in Ground who called your EYC).
I enjoyed the video but I cringe every time I hear a pilot say "go ahead" on the radio. I recommend sticking to standard phaseology for professionalism and safety.
Thanks for visiting TIMOR-LESTE 🇹🇱! Lovely video.
Stefan, seems to me that you need a copilot who could operate your cameras, provide company, etc. I'm putting my hand up!
It's 400 m from Australian territory to PNG. A lot closer than Indonesia or East Timor.
Heard you on the area frequency when you were departing YLEC. Great channel.
