That was incredibly entertaining! You explained the appeal of this series very well. And yeah, the mechanics are both very refined and relatively easy to learn, while hard to master. Initially, the lack of a hold piece really turned me off, but it requires you to be a lot more strategic with your piece placement. Overhangs especially is something I never did before getting into TGM. The randomizer is a bit more chaotic compared to the one in the sequels TAP and TI, but it sometimes adds to the excitement while not being as predictable as the piece randomization in modern guideline Tetris. Honestly, I find other versions of Tetris rather boring in comparison. The satisfying sounds the pieces make, the unique way the pieces rotate, and the way 20G transforms the basic mechanics of Tetris into a even more challenging game - Arika took an already brilliant game and added so many incredible layers on top of it! I been playing this for the first time this week on PS4 and I can't even get above grade 6. Played for 3 hours each day same outcome. There's literally no time to think and react a few minutes into the game. I can see why this never left Japan. People in America would have commited murder or destroy arcade machines after playing this.
Try to have an even stack that helps to make decisions fast and always have the next piece in mind if you find this game too hard try puyo puyo tetris or tetris effect they are both good but puyo puyo tetris has a better gamefeel
I've been getting interested in tetris tgm this vid was 2 years ago so I won't be suprised if I don't get a response but how long would it take to get GM role în Tetris tgm 1 just like someone who can get up to S1 how long would it take for them to achieve gm in tgm 1
I prefer keyboard for Tetris TGM but recently I've been playing only on the arcade stick because it makes the experience much more fun. In fact, arcade sticks are superior to gamepads when it comes to fun factor. For performance, I don't think there's any difference.
I know you mentioned playing on controller being odd for TGM, but the recent spate of videos coming out with the port proves that pad is more than a viable input method for the game. What *I'm* confused about is using the analog stick for it--- does it have any comfort advantages for you or is it just because you're used to it? Also which controller are you using and is the analog stick gated at all?
The controller is an 8bitDo SN30 pro. I've had D-pads wear down after too much TGM since I instinctively slam on buttons in this game. So I decided to try a stick, and this stick just so happened to work pretty good. (Though the rubber on top has peeled off entirely >_>; ) The reason I think it works is because of the size. If you have to push the stick hard it makes swift movements difficult; this controller's stick is a good size while still letting me spin 360 degrees smoothly. It is not gated.

I feel you - my PB is 11:50, and it was a total suicide run. Slamming pieces down all over the place, nothing but tetrises for line clears... Sub-11 ain't in my future!

Actually, Arcade Controllers were commomly composed of a arcade stick and 3 or 4 buttons.
