Unintentional video game passwords

- Many of the early NES games utilized password systems to store game progress. Turns out most of these systems can be manipulated quite easily. I demonstrate that on several NES games by creating passwords that contain human-readable phrases.
The "we're sorry but your password must be over 8 characters long and include an uppercase letter, a lowecase letter, a number, a non-alphanumieric character, a smiling emoji, ascii art, and the horn of a unicorn" of the 90s.
I would still take that over typing in long ass passwords from the NES era.

I discovered the Rambo 0000 password on my own as a kid. If you just walk to the right long enough, you will eventually escape purgatory and end up near the end of the game - AS LONG AS YOU NEVER PRESS LEFT. Once you press left you are stuck.
I remember the very first password system I ever "cracked" (partially), which was Lord of the Rings Vol. 1 on SNES. I noticed that the structure was very simple, where there'd be groups of three alphanumeric characters, and each group of three was attached to a character in your party, and it was easy to discover who was who, because characters you did not have were blank, and then there was the inventory code (Labeled as such as on the password screen!) and then a last line.
Well, what I did was I took a starting character out, and gained 1 levelup then I checked the password and I noticed that both the checksum (back then I didn't know what this was called, but I discovered the apparent role it played in the password) and one of the character's letters in their code incremented by a certain amount. It didn't take me long to also discover that it increments differently on Lv10, 20, etc.
Well, I was eventually able to give myself Lv50+ characters at the beginning of the game.
.....and I did this when I was a teenager at the time. lol. I also did this with no internet, and no resources, I didn't even have a PC at the time. Just Me, and my SNES.
Dhalin Awesome!
Those were the good old days.
Impressive most impressive

Wow this comment got almost 150 likes lol. Wasn't expecting that. But here's a fun fact that I didn't include in my original comment:
You can actually give Frodo Lv50 by manipulating the password in this way and if you do, you can actually kill the Ring Wraiths outside of Bree. But you can't skip the Barrow Downs, because the door to Bree will be closed and locked (and you can't go East of Bree either) until some point in the Barrow Downs that causes it to change.
For some reason, the word "FUCK" always gives amazing results in these password systems.
Anyone gonna speedrun "Butt hole" % in Rambo?
This made me laugh really hard, and I hope someone does

...Who else thought passwords were literal as a kid?
I seriously thought that passwords were intended to keep your siblings out of your save files, like a password on your youtube account. It never occurred to me that the game didn't actually save anything. So, whenever I ended up getting game over after entering a password, I didn't know that I could reenter the same password - I always just started the game again.
I also noticed that San Francisco Rush on the Nintendo 64 has a password system (a password game on the N64?! WTF!) but it didn't use a password if saved to the controller pak. Of course the REAL reason is that the cartridge can't actually save, but the controller pak can - but as my 12 year old self didn't know that, I ended up sending a letter to Nintendo (I also didn't know what developers were) claiming that they were exploiting only children into forcing them to buy controller paks just to disable "sibling protection".
Who ever read that letter must have gotten a good laugh
Were you the kid who ate glue?

I feel as if the Rambo “All 0s” could have been easily avoided if the developers just made that the password for a brand new game...
Not really sure why they wouldn’t think of that.
At the time, 0 wasn't the empty default. Try disabling SRAM in Majora's Mask and you'll see what I mean.

I remember figuring out the password system to Ice Age GBA on vacation a while ago.
It felt like such a great accomplishment!
There are 10 levels, which you can get a golden acorn on if you gather enough acorns, but can also beat without doing so. The password saves up to which level you've beaten, and also saves on which levels you got golden acorns.
It was awesome to me to make up a password that had levels 1-3 beaten, and a golden acorn on level 4. In fact, it's even possible to save golden acorns on levels you haven't yet unlocked, and you'll have a golden acorn right when they do unlock!
I remember river city ransom. Geez, I swore those passwords might as well be nuclear launch codes, given the effort needed to input them.
Also, with the first Megaman X for the SNES, I remember I used to randomly input numbers if I was bored. The results, while not game-breaking, where hilarious at times. Like somehow have the helmet, but not the boots booster.
(For those that don't know, you needed the boots to get the helmet).

Tuxedo Pig I think most people who play Pokemon have played the mystery dungeon games
You either underestimate how many people play Pokemon or overestimate how well known the Mystery Dungeon games are. I doubt most people who play Pokemon have even heard of them.
Now you've made me curious.
I'd be interested to see how the Secrets system in the Oracle Zelda games could be exploited this way.
I remember trying when I was younger without much luck, but I should try again, for sure.
Nintendo Nadnerd I believe passwords save players name, animal friend, and the name of Bipin and Blossom's son.
Try this: Start a new game with a secret password in either Oracle game. Use the password NNNNN NNNNN NNNNN NNNNN. Glitchy fun!
Nintendo Nadnerd It starts a non-linked Hero file, so you can choose the animal.
Ashura Kusanaga Doesn't work for European version. I tried it.
Little Samson has an interesting thing, where a bunch of passwords (including &&&&) will all take you to the endgame in easy mode (which doesn't happen in the real game)
given these are just level selects, I'd guess it's just a specific string check and they were left with a few unused entries, which were dummied out to this

Some relativly modern games have funky password systems too!
On the GBA version of Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom, I remember as a kid I attempted to input a random password and found I could relaibly get very advanced games (Sometimes with many lives- as many as 27) from just picking chacters out in a certain patern.
I bet someone can do it on an emulator. Though, depending on your tendancies, you might find it difficult. Luck may have just found me.
9:20 I like how that password describes the exact noises you would hear if you spawned into that situation in real life.
Is Correct Horse Battery Staple a valid password in any game?
Oh wow. :) No guesses for where that came from :D
are you implying that xkcd is wrong?
No lmao I love xkcd

Eldar Iskanderov in metroid you can use hoorse and it will work
Huh, this is actually pretty interesting. I've actually seen some similar things in Animal Crossing on the Gamecube. There were "Universal Codes". Which gave you... pretty much any item you wanted in the game. However, some of the codes were pretty weird. Like David Boreanaz being in one of them? Pretty odd. But they were both useful, and amusing.
Closest I ever got to this as a kid was realising that the flash game "ronin: spirit of the sword" had a password system in which you could easily modify all stats, level, difficulty etc.

Man, I remember doing this as a kid. I would always type in the random passwords to see what would work, most of the time I would get invalid password message, but sometimes I would get access to the game and it be all glitchy like this. Oh the nostalgic times.
WTF BOOBS BOOBS BOOBS
Ah yes, my favorite password.

You could probably just get a snake tattoo on your forehead and a mask over your eyes. **shot**
Go ask the Classy Flying Verbal Butler for help on that.
That should have been a Kid Icarus password
its funny that this exact password froze the game
In Devil's Crush for TG-16, you can just button mash random passwords and they'll often work. It's better than choosing new game because you'll sometimes get infinite lives. Although it gets disappointing how often you instantly win and don't even get to play.
When I was a kid I found out that in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, entering a password that's all the same letter will sometimes give you a bunch of items. Doesn't work with every letter though.
Rivercity ransom has cool passwords too, but need a exceptional and deep investigation , like max stats, skills, inventory and difficulty
Aaaand with some button-pressing skills, you may be able to play first part of the Cheetahmen theme on Bomberman password input screen.
Would it be possible to reverse this and figure out a way to play a game until the password screen plays a specific phrase?
it's unfortunate that it has no ironic following outside Japan, but Hoshi wo Miru Hito has a pretty awful password system that, considering the game's incredible level of bugginess and lack of polish elsewhere, is probably pretty exploitable.

This is so cool, I had no clue that these password systems had valid passwords that would create glitch levels!
Now I wonder if you could play the games normally from the start, get the exact items or number of items needed, exact score, exact level, exact everything (at least what it does store in the password), and then have the game generate one of those readable passwords by itself when you save or reach a save point! Well, at least the ones that don't glitch anything, like Metal Gear, for example.

I don't see why developers _didn't_ want words in their passwords. If I were an NES game developer, I would've only put checksums for curse words.
Well, it looks like some developers used curse words for the entire codes: ua-cam.com/video/NUMZMkKkhqo/v-deo.html
The checksums aren't for detecting whether there are words in the code or not; in practice all a checksum is meant to do is ensure that only the software itself is able to generate working codes, since the algorithm for calculating checksums and encoding/decoding the passwords isn't generally made public knowledge. The fact that a few passwords that are detected as valid happen to contain English words in them is a complete coincidence.
classy flying verbal butler is a valid password, but correct horse battery staple isn't?

That's really cool! Have tried tinkering with passwords to try and set up arbitrary code execution/credits warps?
I did find out at one point that one of the home console ports of Another World (a.k.a Out of This World) has a credits warp password that's never given to the player at any point.
"Classy Flying Verbal Butler" has no right being as funny as it is.
Playing around with the zelda oracle games, I eventually found the part of the ring transfer password that contains the actual inventory data and got a bunch of rings I didn't actually have (though I just did it by entering random characters into the correct part).
I also accidentally made a typo (swapped a "$" with an "S") that changed the spelling of the file name. I decided to restart using the proper password as I was concerned that I would have issues later.

The Zelda games Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages on GBC have a second quest by using a PASSWORD from the other game. Could you get some funny effects from exploiting those?
6:56 you tried to burn the exit door. Good job.
So if I ever get in an awkward situation, if I say "French Policy Towards Peeing" then the day will reset? SWEET
By taking a look at the infamous ENGAGE RIDLEY password for metroid, I was able to make a version that works instead of crashing or resetting the game (or that one result on 3DS) everything else in the password makes sense, except for the game age, its way to high. if you want to see what ENGAGE RIDLEY would do without breaking the game, this is a functional version that places you in brinstar instead of the invalid area

So "Justin Bailey" in Metroid was unintentional too? xD
I think so. Whereas NARPAS SWORD was programmed in.
"bailey" was an old-time slang for "ballet tutu," "leotard," or "one-piece swimsuit."
Thus, instead of her armor, boots, gloves, and helmet, the password makes the game render her "JUST IN (her) BAILEY."
🩱
I remember a Smurf game on GameBoy that had less than 5 passwords if i recall correctly... and I think the Lion King game too was using passwords. But this makes me think about TLOZ Oracle of Ages/Seasons that has new game +, new game ++ and rings codes that could be tricked that way. You could give Link and the baby weird glitchy names...
